In the Shadow of greatness: How I got my Job on THE SIMPSONS.

August 29, 2007 in Featured, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEO GAMES

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

So while I wait for show #8 to start up again, I was put on show #9. The Director of Show #9 is Chris Clements and the Assistant Director (A.D.) is Matt Faughnan (whose directed his share of shows and has also directed some Simpsons DVD menus. Yes, those things need directors also.)

Chris has a very interesting internet hobby that I will talk about under the video game section below. Meanwhile I just thought I’d really quickly tell you something about my history with Chris.

If you’ve listened to any of my interviews, you know that I started on the show as an intern right out of high school. I used to drive down to Rowland Heights high school after school and take an animation class. That is were I learned to animate and how I got my internship. Well, I met Chris at Rowland because he also took the animation class. In fact Chris actually went to Rowland. Chris was one of the “star” artists in the class. He’s one of those people who seem to be able to do what others find difficult with perfect ease. It’s very annoying. Animation seems to be a natural extension of his being. When he does it, it looks effortless. Not only that but he can draw really well too. He just seems to be able to assimilate the principles of drawing as if they were obvious. Like I said, it’s annoying.

Anyway, it turned out that in the summer of 1993, Chris and I were picked for the three month internship to the Simpsons’ studio. The thing is, I was not (and I’m still not), anywhere near as good an artist/animator as Chris. Man, did I have a tough time. The good thing about being with Chris was that because he was so good, everyone assumed that I was good also. The bad thing was that once they saw my work compared to Chris’ I was given a pat on the head and a look of pity. It was really frustrating. Chris and I managed to get some small things to draw here and there on the show so that we could show what we could do. It was obvious whose work everyone favored. It was very difficult for me. I had given up a scholarship to Otis (an art school in LA) in order to take the internship. I really wanted to get a job out of the internship because if I didn’t, I would have to find a way to go to school without the scholarship. I remember there were many days when I came home and just started crying in frustration at how bad my stuff was. I saw in Chris’ work what I didn’t have.

After the three months were up Chris and I got hired. To this day, I’m still convinced the only reason they hired me was because they felt sorry for me. They didn’t want to hire Chris and leave me out. I worked my butt off at the job that season. In the end, it wasn’t good enough. When hiatus time came and I was laid off, they had no plans on hiring me back. I spent my hiatus going to drawing classes. I reapplied at the show and thanks to the goodness of one of my all time favorite directors to have worked with, Jeff Lynch, they hired me back. I actually owe Jeff my career.

To make a very long story short, Chris quickly rose through the ranks. He became an A.D. after about four or five seasons (I think) and he’s recently became a Director. Now he is my Director, and you know what, I don’t mind at all. I actually really like him as my Director. I’ve worked under him in a couple of his shows now and they have all been a lot a fun. I’ve learned to appreciate the people that are annoyingly good at what you are trying to do. It forces you to strive to improve yourself, but more importantly, it keeps you humble. The fastest way for an artist to stop improving is for him to believe he’s learned all he needs to know. Having someone better than you will always give you something to shoot for.

The Ugly Duckling

VIDEO GAMES

Chris has a website. It’s at www.nickelarcade.com . Go visit it right NOW! It’s full of flash based video games that he’s created himself and they are all FREE. There are a lot of Simpsons artist that go and play at the site. Most of the names on the site’s high score sheets belong to Simpsons artists. Go and see if you could beat their scores. Chris makes the games for fun. It’s his hobby (crazy). The site has been up for years check it out.

Working Hard

August 23, 2007 in MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

The madness is over. We actually managed to pull it off. We finished the Animatic for show 8#. An Animatic is a pencil and paper version of what the show will look and sound like before it gets cleaned up and colored.. The Animatic is shown to the writers and producers and they make changes according to what they see is working or not working.

We managed to finish it. We ended up more than doubling our crew to do it and they even had to move the deadline over one more day because the show was just too big. I managed to finish what I had but only with help from some of my co-workers. I had thirteen scenes to do by Wednesday at 2:00 pm. I gave away six of them which helped out a lot. I ended up actually finishing early so I helped some else finish their scenes. I was working late every night and I had no time to do anything. I promised people drawings and I haven’t even had time to get around to them. It was crazy. I worked a little during the weekend too, but only two hours because I needed to be at home to help pack.

What a relief it is to finish. The thing about these Animatics is that we work really hard on scenes and sometimes the jokes don’t work, even though it’s a sequence you worked long, hard hours on and they just get cut. It’s heart breaking but that’s what they pay us for. I hope the Animatic screening goes okay because if it doesn’t, there will be a lot of changes. That means, doing new scenes instead of finessing what we already worked hard to get right the first time.

Now that I have time I might actually be able to start drawing for myself again…although right now drawing is the last thing I want to do.

Actually, there is a possibility that there might be another show that’s in trouble and we will need to help them out. When one show is behind, it tends to cause a snowball effect. I hope that doesn’t happen. I’m really tired.

A good rest after a tough couple of days

MY WEEK

So I’ve gotten a lot of responses about the Italy diary. I’ve decided to put it up in black and white. If I color it, it will be just for my personal satisfaction because doing that will take a while. In any case, I’ll put it up on its own page when I get the chance (and after I check it for typos). I will let everyone know when I do. I’d like to thank everyone who commented about it.

I would also like to thank, everyone that “Dugg” me. I have four Diggs now! Woo hoo! Techdiva left a review at Digg.com. Maybe she’s the only one that’s “Dugg” me because I can’t seem to find anyone else’s review. Anyway, if anyone else “Dugg” me, thank you and I’d like to thank Techdiva for leaving a review. Yay!

Stress Levels Rising

August 16, 2007 in FAMILY, Interviews, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Lance had a crew meeting Monday of this week to let us know that we’ve got till Wednesday of next week to finish the show. This wouldn’t be such a big problem if it wasn’t for the fact that we still have an entire act to to do and it’s taken us five weeks just to do two. This leaves us a week and a half to finish act three and most of us haven’t even finished with our act two scenes. We’ve been given an extra week since many of us got taken off Lance’s show for a week and even then it still seems almost impossible. One good thing is that we’ve been given permission to do overtime. Another good thing is that we’ve got help from a few more temporary people from other crews. I managed to finish my act II scenes this week and I’ve been given my act III section. Now I have thirteen scenes to finish by Monday. I’ve only got two days to do it and it took me a week and a half to do the thirteen scenes from act II. I’m way stressed out.

In other news, I made a mistake in my last post about the company meeting we had welcoming the King of the Hill crew. That didn’t happen last week but this week. The meeting was really interesting because we found out about all the projects the company is working on.

FAMILY

My baby girl has had a fever earlier this week. It was terrible, she so miserable and there was nothing we can do but give her medicine every three hours. She cries during the night and it made me so sad. My wife and I took turns at night getting up and giving her the medicine. My poor little Munckin. To make matters worse, since we are moving out of the apartment, we’re having a heck of a time packing and taking care of her at the same time. Stress levels RISING. As of the time of this writing her fever is gone and she is now just suffering from a miserable cold.

PODCAST

Interviews

Last Sunday I got interviewed by the guys at Geek Label Radio and the interview is up now. Geek Label Radio is a podcast I listen to every week. They are kinda like the Daily Breakfast only secular and irreverent. Also there are three of them. I think they’re radio DJs so their podcast is very well produced (by Bill Flynn) and very professional so it has sound bites and things you normally hear on a radio show. They sell geeky t-shirts at www.geeklabel.com (dig!) and they are really cool. I’m planning on getting one for my wife that says, “I love my Geek.” It’s going to be tough to decide which one I should get myself.

The Geek Label crew is a nice bunch of guys, and they often crack me up. Check out the interview in show 54. They cut out all my “huhs” and “ehs” as well as edited my mumblings and irrelevant comments so I actually sound like I know what the heck I’m taking about (which I don’t). I was laughing a lot in the interview and I genuinely was having as much fun as it sounds like I’m having. Just be warned that, like the Simpsons, Geek Label Radio podcast isn’t for the kiddies.

BOOKS

One day this week at work, I passed by the kitchen area of the studio to warm up my lunch and there was a book on the table with a post-it that read ‘free’ on it. The title read Wizard for Hire by Jim Butcher. I’m a sucker for fantasy books and I picked it up to read what it was about. I was surprised to find out it was a Harry Dresden book. I’d forgotten the name of the author even though I’ve listened to an interview with him on the Dragon Page podcast. These books have been made into a TV show on the Sci Fi channel called “The Dresden Files”. I’ve seen a few and I’ve enjoyed them. I’ve also heard a lot of good things about the books. The book on the table had the first three Dresden novels in it. I thought to myself, “I just SO SCORED” and I picked up the book and ran for it.

House buying and birthdays

August 10, 2007 in FAMILY, MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Well, I’m back in Lance’s crew again. So is everyone else that went on retakes. I’ve been trying to crank out my scenes but I don’t feel like I’m getting enough done. Not only that but house buying stuff got in the way of work today and I spent most of my Thursday out of the office. I ended up coming in around 5 o’clock to at least put in 2 hours and I have to stay late Friday plus come in on Saturday. Dang it! I just need one week when I can just do my job without interruption.

On a lighter note, most of us in the crew that went to Comic Con, began showing off our “loot”. It’s fun to see what other people picked up at the Con. It also suck when you know what you missed out on. Luckily many of the things that I didn’t get I can get in other places. I just have to save up little bits of my money to get them.

Today, apparently, there was a company meeting at the studio were they welcomed the King of the Hill crew to the studio. King of the Hill is part of our company and three years ago, when we moved to the new studio in Burbank (Our old studio was in North Hollywood), the King of the Hill crew didn’t come along because the show was canceled at the time. When it was picked up again they began production at the North Hollywood studio. This week they officially moved in to the Burbank studio and are using the space that the Simpsons Movie was using. I didn’t go to the meeting because I wasn’t even at work this morning due to the above mentioned house buying thing. Oh, and just thought I’d mention that my dad works on King of the Hill drawing Backgrounds. Welcome to the new studio Pop!

FAMILY

Today, (Thursday 9th) is my baby daughter’s birthday. She is 1 year old. She spent her day at Abuelita’s (‘grandma’ in Spanish) house and had fun with her tios (aunts and uncles in Spanish). She ate her first cupcake. I’m told that after taking a large bite out of it she turned up to everyone around her with a face full of frosting and said, “Mmmmm.” I wasn’t there because I went into work as stated above. I’m so angry at that house buying stuff that really screwed up the day.

The Munchkin is such a cutie pie. Here’s a picture of her with my wife:

My wife with the Munchkin

She looks NOTHING like me (thank God!). The only thing she got from me is my hair (not seen in this picture). And my brilliant mind, of course. 🙂

MY WEEK

Today is also my friend Amiee’s birthday. I was going to draw a silly picture of me doing something stupid like I usually do but I decided to draw Amiee a picture for her birthday instead. Her online blog/diary said jokingly that she wanted one of Gankutsuou. I only have time during the week to draw one picture so I drew it instead of what I was going to do. Here it is. I wish it was better drawn but…

Gankutsuo

It’s a drawing of Gankutusou. It’s a Japanese Cartoon (anime) that re-imagines the story of The Count of Monte Cristo (one of my favorite books) and puts it in a weird Sci Fi setting. It’s really interesting. The Count (Gankutusou) comes across as this weird vampiric alien from another galaxy. The art direction in the cartoon is really strange as well. It’s not for everyone but I like it and so does Amiee. Happy Birthday Amiee!

QUESTION

I have a question for you. I’m gonna put a little illustrated diary I made of a trip to Rome that my wife and I took in 2005. I showed it to a few people and they thought it was funny so I thought I’d put it up on the site. It was hand written but my handwriting is so bad, I went back and put in clean type instead. I’m going to create a page just for it on this blog. The original is in black and white but I thought since I’m going to put it up on the site, I should color it. Here is a sample of what page 5 of the diary looks like, without color:

Italy Diary Page 4

(By the way, you can click on some of these images to make them bigger)

My question is:

Would you like me to put the diary up in black and white right away so you can read it, OR do you want me to wait until it’s all colored?

If I put it up in black and white, I will replace the black and white pages with the colored versions as I finish coloring them.

Please let me know what you’d like. Thank you.

Comic Con 2007

August 2, 2007 in BOARD GAMES, MY WEB COMIC, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

So the Simpsons Movie is out and the response from most everyone has been real positive. According to The Numbers and Box Office Mojo, it made $74,036,787 the first weekend and it’s up to $97,222,671 as of the time of this writing, which is really great. And that’s just the domestic gross. As an artist, any successful animated movie is good because it means more work for us. But of course this one means more to me personally because I worked on it. In any case, we are very happy about how the film is doing. Although, as of the time of this writing, no one from my family has actually seen it. I have had friends that have though, and they tell me they enjoyed it.

As far as work on the show goes, it’s not going well at all. The movie really did a number on the shows. We are very behind on many of them. The retakes department is flooded with work that needs to get done. Retakes is a department that deals with fixing thing on the finalized color version of a show that comes back wrong from Korea (where they do the final animation). They also rework scenes that have been rewritten. On Tuesday I was one of three crew members that got taken off Lance’s crew for the rest of the week to help out the retakes department. Needless to say it’s a bit annoying for all of us. Especially since I was going at a decent pace on Lance’s show. Lance’s show is now going to be late because of this. This is really bad. It means everyone will be working late to try to catch up to regular schedules. Like I said in my interview on The Catholic Insider, things sometimes get very stressful. To make it worse, the last retake scene handed to me has a crowd of kids in it. MAN, I hate drawing crowds!

COMIC CON

My trip to Comic Con began badly. Taking care of my baby daughter in the morning before I left made me a bit late. I left the house thirty minutes after I intended to leave. It was going to be a two hour drive to San Diego and I wanted to get there when the doors opened so I could get my on-site professional registration done and over with quickly. It took two hours and thirty minutes to get there because I ran into some random traffic. Once at San Diego, it was hell on earth just to find parking. San Diego has all these one way streets that, if you don’t know the city well, can get you really frustrated. The traffic was horrible in the city, EVERYONE was looking for parking. Luckily, I remembered I found parking five years ago south of the convention center so I headed in that direction and I found a place to park. This took about thirty minutes. I got to the convention center an hour off schedule.

Once in the convention center I stood in line to register at the professional’s booth. Usually I pre-register and get in for free, but this time I had forgotten to do so, so for the first time in thirteen years of going to the Con I paid to get in. While in line I found out that the water I had set aside to bring along with me wasn’t in my backpack. I realized, to my annoyance, I had left it at home. The Con has drinking fountains but I was stuck in line, so I couldn’t get a drink and I was really thirsty. An hour and a half later, I got my badge and drank some water at a drinking fountain (I refused to buy a bottle of the ridiculously overpriced water they were selling) then I went inside to walk around.

As it always does, the Con overwhelmed my senses as I walked into the Dealer’s Hall. Geekiness oozed as far as the eyes could see while mobs of the geek elite walked purposely from place to place. I happen to enter the Con right by the Wizards of the Coast (WoC) booth. I saw a line where people were rolling a giant 20 sided die in order to win a free WoC product. One of my personal favorite WoC games is Dreamblade. I saw they were giving some boosters away so instead of starting my quest for art items I could only get at the Con, I thought I’d stand in the small line to try to get a Dreamblade booster pack.

The line was short and after about ten minutes it was my turn. Unfortunately in order to roll the die, you needed to have been shown a demo of one of the games that the people at the WoC booth were trying to sell. Since I hadn’t participated in a demo, I couldn’t get an item. The guy, told me if I participated in a demo I’d be moved to the front of the line when it was over but I just didn’t have time to do that so I just left. So far my Comic Con had been really annoying and tiring.

I then started my trek through the Con. As I always do, I started at one end and walked up and down the rows till I got to the other end. It took about five hours I think. I saw so many interesting things. In all the times I’ve gone to the Con I’ve always forgotten to bring a camera. It’s so annoying. I always remember when I see something I would like a picture of. Like some of the sculptures of movie, game, and comic characters. Or the crazy colored Darth Vader helmets or the crazy colored Bart Simpson heads. Then there was that awesome life size Adam Hughes drawing of the Star Wars Legacy Jedi on the Dark Horse booth. There was a giant Voldemort statue on top of another booth and a life size Optimus Prime in another. That’s only SOME of what was there and I don’t have pictures of any of it. Aaaaahh!

On my trek through the Con, I passed my friend Aimiee’s booth and I took some of her postcards that she had out for free. I bought a few books of sketches from different artists and I paid very close attention to how artists promoted themselves and their comics (for when I have to do it). The whole time I was there, my main goal was to look for anything I might get inspiration from for my web comic. I passed by a section that had all web comic artists but I didn’t introduce myself because I had nothing to show them. Besides, I’m an introvert and it’s not in my nature to go up and approach people. I did pay attention to what and how they sold their things. One of the booths I’m glad I stopped at was the Alcatraz High booth. I met the writer/artist Bobby Rubio and bought the books that he had there. His drawings are great. His comics where one of the few comics I got at the con that really made me start thinking about how I was going to approach my web comic. Bobby Rubio is a storyboard artist at Pixar and also worked on Avatar: The last Airbender along side my friends Kenji Ono and Tomi Yamaguchi. He signed my books. Thanks Bobby!

Finally, as I approached the other side of the Con I reached the Stuart Ng booth. Stuart Ng sells European comics and I was in heaven. Problem was I only had a little bit of money left. Last year I spent a lot of money there. This year I only had enough for four books. The agony of choosing was almost unbearable. There were a lot of French comics there. You see, the French, like the Japanese, take their comics seriously. There have been many influential people that have talked about French comics as another serious classic art form. It’s difficult to argue against the fact that these comics are, by far, some of the best in the world and here I was trying to pick only four. Well, I chose my four. I was sooo happy with the comics I bought there. They are so INSPIRING! I’m so glad I got them. I’m so glad I went. I didn’t know I needed the inspiration until I left the Con and really took a long look at what I bought. It was a great ending to an irritating day.

Comic Con, comicbook guy, harry potter, stormtrooper, French comics at Stuart Ng Sooo happy.

MY WEB COMIC

I finished the first draft of my web comic story. Finally the hard part is over (getting it all down from start to finish.) After I read the draft I said the same thing my friends said when they read the first draft of the Simpsons Movie. “It’s terrible!” Hopefully, now that I have it written down I can start working out the kinks. I hope the revisions will be successful. The story needs to be rock solid before I start drawing. Otherwise it’s just a waste of energy.
