Onto show 4. Father’s day. U.S. and the World Cup.

June 24, 2010 in THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

So managed to finish that crazy Couch Gag last week.  It was very difficult and I’m not sure how well I did in the time I was given to do it.  I felt like I could have used more time, but I finished it and the director seemed happy.

On Monday I started on show 4. I’ve been given Act 2 to do.  Fortunately the changes in this show are not as bad as the last ones. Still, it’s a lot to do.  I’m doing my best.

ART

The World Cup is still effecting how much I get done on my project.  I did manage to, at least, draw a page.  It hasn’t helped that I didn’t have a hard copy of my photo reference, until  yesterday.  If I had, I probably would have done a bit more.  At this point I’m pretty happy with where the designs are.  I might do a few more sketches but I need to move on to design the backgrounds.  Which might turn out  to be interesting. I might need to go around and take pictures of places to use as reference.  I’ll have to “location scout”. Find a good place where a magickal fight can take place. A place with good obstacles that can be destroyed. Most likely, I’ll find a few places and mix them all up together.

Anyway, here’s what I did this week:

  sb-11.jpg

I definitely need to work out more of the detail in this character. I’ve decided to give all the Sorcerers long pupils as apposed to round ones.  Makes them look a little less human.

FAMILY

For Father’s Day, I woke up early and went to my parent’s house to watch the World Cup games with my Pop.  It was fun. My mom made us an enormous breakfast and it was sooo good.

The day before, Alesha had given me my Father’s Day presents, which were three DVDs: WANTED, JUMPER, and SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES. Great Father’s Day presents.

After the games ended we had a huge lunch out in my parent’s backyard with my wife and kids. They showed up a bit after the games were over. Then, my Pop and I ,watched the new SHERLOCK HOLMES movie with Robert Downey Jr.. Pop liked it. My brother and my sister-in-law came over around that time with Paulo my nephew.

My kids played, we all talked and laughed. It was a great Father’s Day. We had a lot of fun.

MY WEEK

So the highlight of this week was yesterday, Wednesday the 23rd of June. I was sitting alone watching the World Cup, U.S.A. vs Algeria.  It was a heartbreaking game.  I couldn’t believe how bad things seemed to be going for the U.S.

I began “Tweeting” about it as the game began to come to a close. This is what I Tweeted:

Luis_E_Escobar

Come on U.S. come on. You’re playing so good, just get it in the goal.

A few minutes later:

Luis_E_Escobar

So frustrating.

I watched a bit more and really started betting bummed out:

Luis_E_Escobar

Wow, so many attempts. So many close calls. Even another stolen goal. 5 more minutes.

Five minutes later I had already typed out  how bummed out I was over the U.S. loss. I just hadn’t sent off the Tweet. I was so heartbroken. Then…Landon Donovan scored a minute into stoppage time:

Luis_E_Escobar

GOOAAALLLLL!!!!!! YEAAAAAHHH!

Luis_E_Escobar

SO AWESOME!

In my room and in my head, all by myself, this was happening:

and this:

I was high the rest of the day:

Ah man, I want to hug someone.

The World Cup is taking all my time. Couch Gags and pressure. Ambrose goes to daycare. STAR WARS video games. HBO’s A Game of Thrones.

June 17, 2010 in ART, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEO GAMES, VIDEOS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

After having finished with a Couch Gag on Monday and the finishing touches on Act 1 of show 3 on Tuesday, I was assigned one of the craziest, most complicated Couch Gag I’d ever done and it’s do Friday…no pressure.

MY WEEK

Okay, so I loooovve watching the World Cup. It’s the only time I go out of my way to watch ANY sport.  I don’t really do that but for the World Cup, I make an exception.  Why? I don’t know. The tournament has a  special place in my heart, I think, from watching it with family and friends and the vibe has never left me. I just enjoy it A LOT.

Problem is, it’s taking up all my time.  At least, all the time I’ve reserved to work on my private things like this blog and my personal projects.  The games just happen to fall exactly during the times I tend to use to work on those two things.  I’m writing this so you’re not surprised as to why my blog entries are suddenly so short and uninspired for the next Month.

It’s the World Cup’s fault.

ART

World Cup is taking all my time so I didn’t really get much drawn this week.  I developed the Sorceress a little bit more.  Decided on a face and refined the shapes a bit more to my liking:

sb-10.jpg

FAMILY

Ambrose went to daycare for the first time this week.  He and his big brother and sister went to daycare everyday (except Tuesday, where they spent it with my parents) this week and the next. Alesha has gone back to work for the next two weeks and then the school year ends.

Ambrose was a very good baby and behaved himself. I’m very proud of the little booger.

VIDEO GAMES

STAR WARS video games have some of the best cinematic. Case in point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdBz62oPQh8&feature

It looks like they took the likeness of actor Sam Witwer and modeled it into the character.

And then there is this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYz7BxXUuJU&feature

There is something kinda DRAGONBALL Z about it.

VIDEOS

For those of you who are fan of George R. R. Martin’s SONG OF ICE AND FIRE books and have yet to see this, here is the teaser trailer for the HBO series based on the books:

Tough work week. Character design silhouettes. Rithmomachia

June 10, 2010 in ART, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Wow, talk about work overload.  I’m helping to revise show 3 for the next two weeks.  It got a MAJOR rewrite.  I didn’t get to work on it right away though. I was told to start boarding the Couch Gag for the show first. This turned out out to be a huge job. The gag was practically a short story and it’s long for a Couch Gag. It was asking for some really tough things which meant there were some very complicated problems to solve  Truly challenging.

After finishing my first rough pass, I was told I had to start revising Act 1.   Boy oh boy did it get overhauled.  It wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for the fact that early into the act there was a huge dream sequence that required a lot of fancy styled shots. This small section of the board would be as challenging as the Couch Gag and it was only one small part of all the fixes I need to do.

So I started the Act, and midway through I was told  I need to finish the Couch Gag boards as soon as possible.  I had to stop my work on Act 1, which I was already behind with, and had to restart the Couch Gag board.

It’s turning out to be one heck of a tough week.

ART

I continued to explore the characters this week, trying to find the right face and shape for the Duran Duran Sorcerer:

sb-06.jpg

I made up my mind fairly quickly (maybe too quickly) with the look I was going to go with for the Sorceress. Which used this picture as reference:

nuclear02.jpg

sb-07.jpg

I then decided to focus specifically on the silhouettes of the characters:

sb-08.jpg

The “final” silhouettes I placed at the top of the page below.  I put quotes on the word final because I’m still giving myself a little bit of leeway to adjust them if I need to, or get rid of them all together (I’m not 100% sure about the Sorceress yet, I might be rushing her). I’m the most happy with Rob’s silhouette.

I then decided to really start working out the details of the characters again.  I decided to start with the lead Sorcerer’s face, since I  felt I was close.  I accidentally hit upon a design for his face that I REALLY like. It’s not a solidly constructed drawing but it will do for now:

sb-09.jpg

FINALLY! Two down, two more to go. After that, I have to design the backgrounds and the monsters. Plus test the flat stylized look I’m going to want to use, which means, doing an animation test.

So far all this has been fun and frustrating all at the same time.  After so many bad designs, it feels good when you hit one you like.

PODCAST

So I decided to listen to Catholic Under the Hood this week.  It’s a great podcast if you’re interested in Catholic history. he explorers lots of different things historical but from the Catholic perspective.  The latest episode was right up my alley since it was about a board game.

Rithmomachia.

Here’s what Fr. Seraphim wrote about it the show:

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Rithmomachia was one of the most popular games played in the universities and theological schools and promoted by Roger Bacon and Thomas More. Today, it has fallen into obscurity.

The show was really informative. So much so that it made me want to write a story from the info it put forth.   The game itself also sounded fascinating. Don’t know how much fun it would be to play, but the idea of the game is really cool. Great fuel for stories.

In order to talk about the game so that the audience could understand the relevance of the game to the mind of a person in the middle ages, Fr. Seraphim  had to explain the way the people saw number back then.  I couldn’t help but think of the numbers from  LOST.

Highly recommend listening to the podcast. CLICK HERE to do so.

Designing modern Sorcerers. My mom’s birthday. Playing board games.

June 3, 2010 in ART, BOARD GAMES, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I’ve started opening the door to the office I’m in. It gets really lonely in that big room and it helps me feel like there are people out there when I leave it open.  It helps invite people to come in and say hi as well. That helps.

Last week, I got locked out of my office. I came in at 7am and found the door locked and I didn’t have a key.  Lucky for me, my producer gets in around 8:30am so she opened it for me.  While I had time, I cleaned up my old cubicle a bit and wandered around the studio. Especially in the area of the studio where they’re producing the Marvel comics animated shows, like HERO SQUAD and THE AVENGERS. I walked around and geeked out over all the cool superhero artwork on the walls.  It was both a fun and irritating morning.

FAMILY

Saturday was my mom’s birthday. We celebrated it by taking her out to a picnic in a park by a lake. We had a great time. We threw Frisbees, ate sandwiches, took walks, threw rocks in the lake and generally had a good time spending time with her, even though I got sun burned…and really sore.  Ouch.

Happy Birthday Mommie! I love you.

BOARD GAMES

Two articles ago I wrote about how Mariam and Anthony came over with baby River and how Anthony and I played some board games. I also wrote about how we were going to plan to get together to play again sometime but this time, with everyone.  Well, sometime was last Sunday.  They came by in the late afternoon so we had plenty of time to play.  It was going to be a big experiment, as far as I was concerned, because I wasn’t sure if the kids would let us play. We were going to play CRANIUM but their copy of the game had run off somewhere.  It was a shame because I think the kids might have been able to participate.  I ended up bring out CARCASSONNE because I thought the kids might want to participate helping out one of us in that game.

It sorta worked but Dante left in a huff after I told him he couldn’t flip over all the tiles and that he had to wait his turn. Elizabeth lasted a bit longer before she felt she wasn’t really playing, got up and left.  We played the game to it’s end and then ate dinner. I put the kids to bed after we were done eating and we started a game of TICKET TO RIDE: EUROPE.

It was a very fun game with quite a few laughs.  Especially once Anthony realized that he could start messing peoples routes up.  He messed me up pretty good a few times and then he tried messing Mariam up. Once the game was over we started counting up all the extra points.  That’s when the game really got interesting, mostly because Anthony and Mariam ended up with a tie for first place.  The tie breaker would be the “Longest Route” card.  Mariam won it and won the game.

We were all in good spirits after that and wanted to play something else but it was getting late.  I brought out LOOT, which is a twenty minute long game.  Alesha was on the phone pretty much the whole game, so it kinda messed up the fun of the game a bit.  The rest of us were having a huge battle for merchant ships.

Overall we had a good time and the kids were surprisingly good.  All of them, including the babies.   Baby Ambrose hung out at the table and watched a lot.  Unfortunately by the time I was holding him, he started getting fussy and  the place on the table I was sitting at made it awkward for me to take care him well.

We had fun, and it’s possible that we’ll do it again sometime.

ART

I’m definitely past the “not wanting to work on my project” hump.  Now, I can’t wait to get a chance to work on it.

Soon after I posted my last article, I remembered a website I bookmarked that might help me with my reference problem.  I checked it out. Turns out I was right. It was exactly what I needed. It had both, good costumes and great character types.  I spent my lunch hour downloading photos that I might be able use.  That same night, I came home and began to sketch from them:

sb-01.jpg

But then I thought to myself, maybe I should draw some silhouettes  before I continue drawing faces. I went and got my copy of THE SKILLFUL HUNTSMAN, opened it to the silhouettes pages for inspiration.

skillful_500.jpg

sil.jpg

The pages in the book where cool.  I thought to myself, I could do that. I was wrong:

sb-02.jpg

Wow, THAT didn’t go as planned. I rolled a critical miss on my “draw cool, well designed silhouette” skill check.  Doing them is waaay more difficult than I had anticipated. I thought I understood what I was doing but I guess not.  Frustrated, I stopped for the night and decided to try something else  the next day.

After reading my last post, Zach Bosteel suggested that I ought to look at actors Tilda Swinton and Steve Buscemi for inspiration for character types.  He was dead on. I thought they might actually work pretty well as Sorcerers. I started to sketch them:

sb-03.jpg

My drawings didn’t quite capture their likeness but that wasn’t the point.  I just wanted to capture their “type”. Still, I WAS trying to capture their likeness just as a personal challenge. Failed my “capture likeness” skill check too. You’d think with a face like Steve Buscemi’s I’d be able to draw him easier.  Tilda Swinton, is just a pain to draw since she’s so plain.  I’m just really bad a caricatures I guess. I need to practice it much more. I got what I wanted though, so I kept on going.

I then went into my photo reference and began mixing and matching a little. These are the photos I used:

00260m.jpg

fashion6-500×669.jpg

florian-again-499×533.jpg

nicomedetaw2010m01-500×750.jpg

My first thought (Groups 1 below) was to take the Steve Buscemi type and give him crazy hair while combining the vest from the guy (in the second photo above),  the long haired guy’s pants (from the third photo above) and the happy guy’s shoes (from the first photo).  In the end, I didn’t like it one bit.  I then used jawbone boy’s face (the last picture above) and put it on that body (Drawing 2 below). It worked better but I still wasn’t happy.:

sb-04.jpg

I gave that up and tried a different direction. I used the photo below and drew the guy on the left, pretty much, straight out  for drawing 3 (above):

julius-2.jpg

I  liked it.  I thought I could use that design as the second male Sorcerer. I thought it would be funny to give that guy a Steve Buscemi type face which would be the reason why wares his hair down over it.

A few days later I looked at some more photos and picked these:

anndemeulemeester-1.jpg

hj23-black.jpg

I took the guy  on the top right and tried drawing him (drawing 1 below).  I thought it was funny since the guy looks like a rejected Duran Duran band member.  I then thought I’d try something I’d been thinking about for a while and tried drawing jawbone boy with a hoodie (second photo above) (Drawing 2 below). I didn’t like it so I tried drawing the Duran Duran guy again using different shapes which I liked (Drawing 3 below).  I then skipped back to the other design idea and tried to make the collar work (Drawings 4 below) but it just made him look like an astronaut or something:

sb-05.jpg

So far I’m leaning more in the direction of the Duran Duran guy.   I kinda like the idea for some reason. It makes me laugh. I also like the jawbone boy’s face thought. Either way, I’m getting closer to what I’m going to end up using.

What do you think?
