ART/VIDEOS – Tips to Improve Your Imaginative Drawing 01

Improving your drawings is tough.  Especially drawings created from your imagination.

This week I draw over Ken’s drawings.  He asked me to go over his drawing and give him some tips on improving them.  I told him I’d do it if he allowed me to make Youtube videos.  He agreed.

I made the videos because I think what Ken is dealing with is something many other people are dealing with. I thought by making my suggestions public, you might get something out of it too.

This is the first of two videos. In it, I cover:

ART/VIDEOS – Drawing From Reference: Part 04

This is the final video.  In this video I change my drawing to look more like what I want it to look like.  In this case, Batman.

I show you the process I use do this.  Unlike the last video, I don’t show you the whole process in real time.  I think you got the message in the part 3.

Needless to say this process took a lot of time as well. I go step by step through the process so you know what I did.

I DON’T render the image.  If I was to do that I would take two to three times longer to do that.  It’s a long tedious process. What I end up with is a good foundation to start a final render.

The critical stuff is in place.  Making sure that all the main masses and shapes are in place. Now it’s time to start refining and adding in all the rest of the detail.

This is actually a very long tedious process.  I’ve often seen videos where the artist speeds this part up.  This is meant to be an educational video, so I don’t do that. I show you how long something like this takes.

I want you to understand what you’re getting into once you start doing something like this.  It’s not magic, it’s a lot of tough little decisions and all them are critical to making the drawing looks right. It takes as long as it takes:
