Drawing Batgirl: Part 3

March 28, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEO -Every Drawing Has a Story.  Drawing Batgirl: Part 3

There are two ways of adding tone to a drawing or painting: going straight to color (in it various methods), or the “grisaille” method.  Most of us tend to want to learn the straight to color first.  However, it may be best to learn the grisaille method first.

What is the grisaille method?  Well, you first do a grey or grisaille version of the values you’re going to use and then you tint the paint with a color layer.  That way you’re colors have the values you want.

In this video you’ll see me do just that. I create a black and white version of the values I’m going to use, so that when I add color, the values are working.

Drawing Batgirl: Part 2

ART/VIDEOS – Drawing Batgirl: Part 2

Continuing my video series of creating a Batgirl drawing from start to finish, I tackle inking the drawing this time around.

However, a lot more refining had to occur before I to the point where I was comfortable inking the drawing. Even after I took care of these refinements, I still came across some trouble.

It came in the form of not liking the head I’d drawn, even after I inked it.

This is a long video.  It was one of the longest straight session of drawing I had for this particular piece.  There was a lot to be done and a lot to be fixed.

It takes as long as it takes.  This is drawing in real time and it takes a lot of time to get it right.

Drawing Batgirl: Part 1

ART/VIDEOS – Drawing Batgirl: Part 1

How a drawing is created from start to finish may be a bit of a mystery to some.  Often, we assume that it just happens magically.  As if there isn’t a struggle or any complications.

We sometimes think that, because an artist draws for years that they never have trouble.  While we struggle getting anything to look right.  As if, the drawing just happens.

This isn’t the case.  At least not for me.

In this new series of videos I show you my process without speeding through it.  You’ll see it all in real time.  I’m doing this so you really know how long it takes to draw something.  Too often, sped up drawing videos give us a false impression of how long a drawing takes to come to life.

I show you how long it takes me to draw something, what I’m thinking about as I draw it, and how I struggle to figure out solutions to drawing problems that come up along the way:

Corner Booth #16: Interview With Darrell Van Citters

March 1, 2018 in VIDEOS

VIDEO/INTERVIEW – Corner Booth #16: Interview With Darrell Van Citters

Darrel Van Citters owns his own animation studio.  His career began an artist at Disney feature animation. The story about how he left Disney, why he left and what happened after, which lead to him owning his own animation studio is a part of the conversation we have in this recording.

Not only that but Darrel is also an author.  He wrote a book on The Art of Jay Ward.  The story about how that came about is something we also talk about.

If you don’t know who Jay Ward is, he’s the producer of Rocky and Bulwinkle. We talk about the show’s production and art, which believe it or not, was animated in Mexico.

Sit back and enjoy, this is a fun conversation.
