Introduction To Shading

ART/VIDEO – Introduction To Shading

Introduction to shadingShading can be a tricky thing.  It’s one of the first things people think about when they think about drawing. It’s also something that can be very difficult to get right.

Most of the shading information that I’ve seen explain shading but rarely do they ever explain “edges.”

Edges are the type of gradient you use to shade a form depending on the objects structure and the type of light it gets hit with.

In my video I go over the type of edges you can use when shading and when they’re used. I also show you some very simple things you can do to map out your shading before you even start:

PART 1

In this video I cover basic design.  Once you have a flat basic shape to work off of, you can now start changing you’re drawing to something more cartoony.

This requires you to play around with shapes a bit.  I go over it in the video and show you how I’d go about doing it with this drawing.

How you enjoy.

ART/VIDEOS  – How to Draw a Cute Cartoon Kitten Using Reference: Part 1

How to draw a cartoon kitten using Ref 01

So you want to draw  a cartoon kitten and have plenty of reference but you don’t know where to begin.  The fur on it’s own is enough to overwhelm you.  So much detail there.  How could you even begin to draw all that?

Lucky for you this is a four part series that takes you though the process of drawing a cartoon kitten from scratch.  I’m going to warn you now that it’s not easy and it will take work and practice.  But if you stick to it, you may end up with something you can show off to your friends and family.

In this first video, I cover observational drawing. I show you one good method to draw what you see using simple flat shapes.

This video came about because a patron of mine, Anastasia, over on Patreon simply asked me how it was done. She was having trouble doing it herself.  Very ambitious.

Figuring Out the Anatomy of Cartoon Characters

April 14, 2016 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEO – Figuring Out the Anatomy of Cartoon Characters

Figuring out the anatomy of a cartoon characterMost cartoons have some basis of real exaggerated anatomy.  There are exceptions but for the most part this is true.

The reason for this is that many cartoons are drawn by people who have had some sort of tradition academic drawing training.  This is why it was interesting for me to be asked how to someone where to figure out a cartoon’s anatomy.

For the most part, you begin designing a cartoon using exaggerated anatomy.  However, this week I still made a video showing how this is so.  And I also show how have knowledge of anatomy also helps when figuring out the anatomy of characters that are very far away from looking anatomical.  Like The Simpsons.

How to Add Exaggeration to a Naturalistic\ Realistic Drawing

ART/VIDEO – How to Add Exaggeration to a Naturalistic\ Realistic Drawing

How to add exaggeration to a naturalistic realistic drawingSquash and stretch is an animation concept.  A concept that I explain in the video below. Sometimes this concept can be applied to a regular drawing.  When it is, how do you go about doing it?

I was asked by one of my readers about applying squash and stretch to different types of drawings.  I do my best to answer but the really, squash and stretch is more a motion thing that a drawing thing.

How to Draw People in Different Styles

March 31, 2016 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEO – How to Draw People in Different Styles

David Tentant The Batman StyleI’ve been asked how people are caricatured in different animation styles.  You often see celebrities show up in you’re favorite cartoon and they look like the celebrity but they also look like a cartoon from the show.

How is this done?

This week I try to tackle this question and do my best to caricature David Tenant using the style of the 2003 animated series The Batman.

I’ll be honest, I kinda fail.  Capturing likeness is really tough.  I do my best but don’t quite do it.  However, you do see the process and you get an idea of how tough it is to do it.

Have a look:

Deconstructing and Reconstructing an Animated Character: Part 2 – Flat Animated Characters

ART/VIDEOS – Deconstructing and Reconstructing an Animated Character: Part 2 – Flat Animated Characters

Robin Teen Titans goThis is the second video where I show you how to break down an animated character so you can draw it yourself.  This time, I chose a flat, graphic style to break down.

There is a very slight difference when you approach drawing a character that is more graphic.  However, most of the principles from part 1 still apply.

If you’d like to see part one, CLICK HERE.

Once again, I’m drawing Robin, but this time from the very funny show Teen Titan Go.  This video gave me an excuse to draw fan art.  It was so fun.

I hope you get a lot from this video:

VIDEOS/ART – Deconstructing and Reconstructing an Animated Character: Part 1

Deconstructing and Reconstructing an Animated Character A Drawing Website reader asked me quite a few questions. Among the first was how to draw animated characters from your favorite TV shows?

I thought it was a good and fun question. I’m sure many people would love to draw fan art of their favorite animated character.  Including myself.

I even took the opportunity to draw on of my favorite animated characters in order to teach this lesson.  If you’ve ever wanted to know how you could draw your favorite animated character, this video is for you:
