How to Add Dimension to Background Details in One Point Perspective.

March 10, 2016 in ART

ART – How to Add Dimension to Background Details in One Point Perspective.

How to Add Dimension to Background Details in One Point PerspectiveSometimes when drawing a house or a building in perspective, when you put the details on, like windows and doors, they can look a bit too flat.  As if they’re just stickers on a flat surface.

How can you make it so that it doesn’t happen?

This week, I’m drawing over one of my Patreon Patron’s drawing. She was having trouble with details of her house looking a bit too flat.  I thought I’d give her some pointers to make these detail look better.

If you’re having trouble with these kind of things as well, I hope this helps you out too:

Getting Depth Right In a One Point Perspective Drawing

March 3, 2016 in ART

ART – Getting Depth Right In a One Point Perspective Drawing

Getting Depth Right In a One Point Perspective DrawingSometimes when adding perspective to a drawing you just don’t know where to stop.  How deep should the room be?  How deep should you draw the side of the house?  Is it okay to make it longer than the front?

What’s the best way to fix these things?

This I made this video to address these issues.  Two of my patron over at Patreon have asked me  questions concerning questions of space and perspective, so I made a video for them.  I hope it helps you as well:

How to Draw a Consistent Character

February 25, 2016 in ART

ART – How to Draw a Consistent Character

Drawing a Consitent CharacterI’m amazed by how often I get asked something like, “how can I draw my characters looking the same every times I draw them?”  I hadn’t realized it was a problem, but the subject kept coming up.

After one of my patrons and fellow artist Aaron D’Errico (who’s a great guy) asked me this question again, I thought I should just make a video.  In the video below, I tried giving some tips on measuring and comparing parts of the character so you can best see what makes them look the way they do.

I also suggest an exercise that can be done to get better at “seeing,”  and analyzing drawings.

I hope you find the video helpful:

How to Ink with a Brush

February 18, 2016 in ART

ART -How to Ink with a Brush

How to ink using a brushLearning to ink, especially with a brush can be tricky.  I was asked by one of my Patreon patrons if I could go give an example of inking with one.

Using a brush is my favorite way to ink so, of course, I said yes.  The video below is what I recorded.

I had a blast. I hadn’t inked with an actual brush in a long time.  I usually use a brush pen. Usually one with synthetic bristles, so I this was a rare treat for me.

The character I’m inking is my character, Pen Grier, from TheDrawingWebsite.com.  I hope you enjoy:

Creating a Drawing From Scratch Part 2 – The Horizon Line

ART – Creating a Drawing From Scratch Part 2 – The Horizon Line

Drawing from scratch part 2Basic use of a Horizon Line can be tricky for beginners.  You may not know exactly what it’s meant to do and how it can be helpful.

They bring to mind notions of tedious, unexpressive, mechanical drawing.  But when you use a Horizon Line well, it’s not like that at all.  It’s simply a very helpful guide.

Continuing the series of videos I made for a Patreon patron who asked me for help, below you’ll find part 2. This one is about using a Horizon Line.

Creating a Drawing From Scratch Part 1 – The Idea

January 21, 2016 in ART

ART – Creating a Drawing From Scratch Part 1 – The Idea

Drawing from scratch part 1Making any drawing work, when you’ve never really seriously tried to do it, can be tough. There’s so many things to juggle and so many questions you don’t know the answer to.

Where should you put the ground plane? Why don’t your drawing elements look right on the page.  Those it matter at first?

What about perspective? When does that come into play? At the beginning? At the end?

One of my patrons over at Patreon had many of these questions.  She submitted a photo of a drawing she drew and asked me if I could help her answer some questions she had.

I did.

I made a video that answered some questions but brought up other questions.  I had made a video that was too short.  The reason I had done so was because I’ve gotten a critique about how long,  rambling, and redundant I could get in my videos.

I over compensated and made my next video too short and not informative enough.

I then tried it again, with some helpful suggestions from my patrons.  One of the may things they suggested was simply to break up the information into one topic videos. That way they don’t go on for so long.

Below is part 1 of 4 of what became my draw over video which is all about creating a drawing from scratch. I hope  you get something out of it:

How to Ink Using Manga Studio

January 14, 2016 in ART

ART – How to Ink Using Manga Studio

Screen shot 2015-12-24 at 9.42.00 AMI love Manga Studio. It’s my favorite drawing program.   I like it more than Photoshop.  If I didn’t have to use Photoshop and only use Manga Studio, I’d be fine with that.

The only thing that Photoshop has that Manga Studio doesn’t (and I wish it did) is the ability to create animated gifs.

One of the more annoying things to do in Photoshop is ink a drawing.  You just don’t quite get the right effect the way you want it using Photoshop.  However, inking is Manga Studio is a dream.

I love inking on paper. It’s my favorite part of some drawings. A close second is inking in Manga Studio.  I made a video showing you why I like inking in Manga Studio.

This video is also for anyone new to Manga Studio so they can see what the program is capable of. And if you don’t own the program, why it’s worth owning.

Four tips on Roughing Out Environments

December 24, 2015 in ART

ART – Four tips on Roughing Out Environments

mountains_hdEnvironments can sometimes be more challenging than characters.  More often than not, the perspective is where people trip up.  Although when drawing more natural environments, there are a few other things to keep in mind.

I was asked about by an artist to give some suggestions and tips on their rough environment sketch. I made a video with four tips on how to approach roughing out an environment.

What I end up with is by no means a finished drawing, just the sketchy thought process you can use in order to come up with an interesting drawing:
