Studying the real in order to design cartoons. Munchkin’s 4th birthday. INCEPTION and our 6th wedding anniversary.

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Got a big compliment for my work from a director a few days ago and that felt good. Looks like the way I’m approaching the work is getting approval.

Then there was this incident: Last week I finished a Couch Gag that I got very little direction on. It was assigned to me, I read the script and since it was an action sequence, I had to “write” the visual representation of the action. The director basically took a look at what I’d done and said, “Well, okay, send it to Gracie to see what they say about it.”  It was very odd because I had made it all up.

A few days later I got the notes back and the notes where really superficial and minimal. Change these character’s to be Lenny and Carl, shorten the shirts on Homer and Marge, remove that details on these eyes.   Nothing really about the action I had “written” with my drawings. That was very satisfying.

ART

(For those of you coming in late to these posts, if you want to read what my project is about, CLICK HERE to learn about the general world the story takes place in, and CLICK HERE if you want to know the story itself.)

I started working on the Giant Snake monster. I decided to go with a Horned Viper. It had an interesting  and very unique shape, plus it had horns:

sb-26.jpg

As you can see in the drawing above, I was really trying to push the head shape in orders to have the viper’s face be all the way at the end of it’s head.

As cartoony as the drawings above are, they aren’t too cartoony.  Why? Well, because I’m not familiar enough with the viper to push it further yet. Thing is, like the gorilla from last week, I first need to see what the animal I’m drawing really looks like.  I also need to get familiar with their anatomy and how it’s put together.  I  can push only so far because I’m trying to figure out how to draw them to begin with.  What shapes to use, what features go where and how they fit together.   Only after drawing the animal, more or less, realistic, do I have a foundation to work on.  How can you exaggerate reality if you haven’t studied what reality looks like? It’s also not enough to just see what it looks like but you have to understand it. This is why figure drawing is so important. When you understand the structure, anatomy, construction, and rhythms of the human form, you are able to re-translate them to the anatomy of other animals (which generally share the same anatomy but in a different configuration).  Understanding how to draw something, does NOT require rendering. If you can draw something without having to render it and it still looks right, your doing something right. The point is to NOT use rendering as a crutch to cover up bad drawing. It doesn’t work. A bad drawing is a bad drawing no matter how much you render it. The best cartoonists are generally the guys that can also draw realistic (or semi-realistic) as well. That said, I’ve seen plenty of artists that can draw realistic and can’t draw cartoony (mostly because they don’t understand the principles of graphic design; or if they do, they don’t know how to apply it to creatures).

At this point, for me to TRULY be doing a deep study of both snakes and apes, I would need to start drawing them without skin to understand their muscle structure, as well as drawing their skeletons.  I may still do this, but for now I just want to get this over with. I want to move on and finish the development stuff sometime this year. It feels like it’s taking forever. I only get to work on this stuff for an hour or so a day.

I thought, in the end, that the Viper (and all other snakes I looked at) just were not scary enough. In fact, MY drawings of the Viper made it almost look like a cat.  It was too cute.  I thought I needed something a bit scarier and creepier.

Before I tackled that problem though, I came across a photo of a gorilla that I just wanted to draw, so I did. I quickly drew a color pencil under drawing, exaggerating the features I saw on the photo as I went. Once I was done, I decided to ink the drawing. I also thought I’d use my Copic markers to add some tone to the drawing just for fun. What I ended up with was not exactly what I wanted but I learned a few things.

Then I went back to drawing the Snake monster:

sb-27.jpg

Both the Winged Ape and the Giant Snake are ideas I lifted from two different Robert E. Howard, CONAN short stories.  In the story with the snake, the snake had a human like face. I thought that perhaps, I should go with that image.  It definitely came out looking much creepier.  It also helped that I had drawn the previous drawings of the Viper because I was able to use snake anatomy in combination with what I know of human anatomy and construction.

You’ll also notice that there’s a gorilla sketch in the page as well. One with a pointy head. That’s because I got an idea for a gorilla head shape I wanted to try out. This lead me to the next couple of drawings:

sb-28.jpg

sb-29.jpg

The idea was to not have it be a ‘real’ gorilla but some kind of gorilla type creature so, instead of a big hump why not make it pointy. This made the ape look a bit alien, which I liked. The idea I was going for with the face, was to try to make it look like a death’s head.  More skull like.  I thought it was working and it was going in the right direction, but there was something not quite right, so I continued on:

sb-30.jpg

In the drawings above, I wanted the face to be small compared to the size of the head, like I had thought in the other drawings last week. I think I got what I wanted with that but somehow the body all looked to “even”. Everything was the same size, so I decided to do a little sketch at the bottom to get the size variations I wanted. It was much better but there was something missing.

A day later, I was looking through the THE ART OF KUNG FU PANDA and came across the gorilla designs in the book.  They were sooo awesome I couldn’t help but steal a shape solution or two and incorporate it into my design:

sb-31.jpg

With the arms of the ape, I was definitely trying a clearer “straight versus curve” line contrast.  I also made him generally thicker and shrunk his face a bit more, so it wouldn’t be so long.

Next I tried to give the snake another go. I was mostly trying to make sure to draw some of his body so that I could see how it grew bigger in the middle while it tapered more as it got to his head and tail.  I also wanted to try to simplify the face so that there wasn’t so many lines. It needs to look as if it’s from the same design universe as the rest of the characters. Not there yet, but getting there. I think I might need to experiment more with the nose and head shape.

(EDIT: For a much BETTER article on the subjects I touched on above, read this one DRAFTMANSHIP: INCREASING YOUR VISUAL VOCABULARY by Aaron Diaz.)

FAMILY

There was a lot going on this weekend.  It was both my wife and I’s 6th wedding anniversary on Saturday and my daughter’s 4th birthday was on going to be on Monday.  We decided to NOT celebrate our anniversary until Sunday and take Munchkin to the LA zoo for her birthday on Saturday instead.  Alesha invited our parents as well as a her sister, my brother and his wife and some friends.  We all met up at the zoo.

I had bought her a “sketchbook” at the dollar store and a few markers. I told her it was so she could draw the animals.  I didn’t realize how much she would LOVE the idea.  As we entered the zoo, we passed by a bird feeder with a bunch of birds on it and she stopped us all to take out the sketchbook to draw a bird.  She was that way with every animal there after.

I brought my own sketchbook but it was much more difficult for me to get any sketching done.  The little bit I DID get to do, didn’t turn out so well. I’d forgotten how difficult it was to draw moving animals at the zoo. Especially when I felt rushed by the fact that I wasn’t there to sketch.

Most of the time we were just trying to make sure to keep track of all the kids and keep everyone together as best we could. It was A LOT of work.  The bigger kids would run off and we’d have to make sure Munchkin and Dante wouldn’t follow them. They didn’t like that much, but it was the safest way to keep track of them. They both had a fantastic time in spite of us keeping them close.  We finished the day at the zoo leaving the kids to go play at the zoo’s playground until they kicked us out because the zoo was closing.

By the time we got home, we where pretty darn tired.  Still, Munchkin was really looking forward to her birthday cake, so Alesha took her to the store and got her one.  We sang Happy Birthday to her and she was sooo happy. I think she was looking forward to that part all day.  We then had cake and ice cream and everyone went to sleep.  Good times.

FAMILY

Sunday evening, we left the kids with my parents and went on a movie/dinner date for our anniversary.  Alesha looked beautiful.

We went to see INCEPTION. We both loved it.  First movie since the original MATRIX  that I’ve wanted to watch in the movie theater again.  If only I had the money to do so.  Really well written and really well told.  A very complex movie and yet they managed to make it  clear.  Fantastic.

Afterward Alesha and I went to dinner.  Alesha is still working on her novel manuscript. Well sorta.  She kinda finished writing it and the biggest reason she isn’t doing more with it right now, is because I hadn’t read it yet to give her my thoughts.   During dinner, I did just that.  I had been reading it all week.  There were some issues with it that I wasn’t able to quite put my finger on. Then we watched INCEPTION and it all became clear.  I knew exactly what it needed.  The way that INCEPTION‘s story was structured gave me the clue.  I gave Alesha my thoughts.  It was a very geeky anniversary dinner.

The first time I read the manuscript, it had needed a lot of work.  She fixed it really well. It still needs a bit of fixing though. I’m very proud of her. Her storytelling has gotten so much better.

We had a good anniversary date.

Simpsons season 22 will have live action puppet Simpsons. Winged ape. So you want to know some design principles?

August 5, 2010 in ART, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Yes, puppets. I can FINALLY say something about it because it’s in the Simpsons press release below.  There’s going to be an episode of the show where one of the acts will basically be a Simpsons puppet show.  When I first heard about it from the director, I got very excited.  I really can’t wait to see it.  The act was storyboarded here so that it could be given to the studio doing the work.  Very cool.

I’m familiar with most of the shows written about below.  Some more than others.  I might be able to expound a tiny bit about some of these shows below if you want to ask a few questions:

Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Hugh Laurie, Halle Berry, Ricky Gervais, Daniel Radcliffe, Jon Hamm and Martha Stewart are among the guest voices in the upcoming 22nd season of THE SIMPSONS premiering Sunday, Sept. 26 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX.In “Elementary School Musical,” the season premiere episode, MARGE (Julie Kavner) sends LISA (Yeardley Smith) to a performing arts camp where artsy counselors (guest voices Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie of “Flight of the Conchords”) and fellow musically inclined campers (guest voices Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Amber Riley of GLEE) inspire her to embrace her creative side. After she returns to Springfield, Lisa becomes restless with her ho-hum suburban lifestyle and catches the first bus to Sprooklyn in hopes of reconnecting with her inner hipster.

This fall, British imports Hugh Laurie (HOUSE) and Daniel Radcliffe (“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”) provide guest voices in the 21st annual “Treehouse of Horror XXI” Halloween spook-tacular. Later in the season, actor Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”) voices an FBI supervisor in “Donnie Fatso”; and Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg, baseball legend Mike Scioscia and sports writer Bill James all lend their voice talents to “MoneyBart.” Lifestyle guru Martha Stewart spreads holiday cheer as herself in “The Fight Before Christmas,” an episode that also features live-action puppets.

Additional guest stars stopping by Springfield this upcoming season include actors Kristen Wiig (“Saturday Night Live”), Paul Rudd (“Dinner For Schmucks”), Rachel Weisz (“The Lovely Bones”) and Alyson Hannigan (“How I Met Your Mother”); NASCAR driver Danica Patrick; comic duo Cheech & Chong; and NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Additionally, Joe Mantegna (“Criminal Minds”) returns as FAT TONY.

Now the longest-running comedy in television history, THE SIMPSONS immediately struck a chord with viewers across the country as it poked fun of itself and everything in its wake. With its subversive humor and delightful wit, the series has made an indelible imprint on American pop culture, and the family members have become television icons. The series features the voice talents of Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer.

THE SIMPSONS is a Gracie Films Production in association with 20th Century Fox Television. James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, and Al Jean are the executive producers. Film Roman is the animation house.

I’ve come to the realization that I’m not really writing out all my process. Some of the thinking behind the drawings I do are simply not written out.  From now on I’m going to try to put this info in.

Okay, so here I go. Why do I keep making so many thumbnails of the same scene and stuff?  Well, I’m looking for the right “storytelling composition”.  If you notice in the sketches below as well as some of my previous blog “composition thumbnails” (feel free to look at earlier posts), I’ve attempted to split the comps into three layers; foreground, middle ground, background. What I’ve chosen to PUT in does positions, depends on what I want to say and how I want to frame the composition. Also, if I wish to finish one of these thumbnails, I hope to give each “ground” it’s own tonal value between darkest dark, mid tone and lightest light (more on that some other time, as I get to a more finished state. Even though there’s already a small indication of this in previous thumbnails).

I’ve been mostly trying to get the main character Rob, to look vulnerable.  I’ve chosen to do this by trying to make him look small in contrast to something much bigger in the picture. Either by, making one object bigger or by grouping multiple objects into a larger bigger shape. Only once did I break this theme in a thumbnail and it actually made him look a bit too heroic so I’ve chosen not to try that again.

For example, in the first thumbnail below, I drew the Sorceress in the extreme foreground. Making her look bigger than Rob.  I didn’t like it though because  I didn’t want her to be the only bad guy in the drawing and her pose was kinda ugly too.  In the second thumbnail below I chose to have Rob be in the middle ground being dwarfed by the enormous shape the monsters create when they are grouped together in the background. In the foreground I put a tentacle or the end of the giant snake, threatening to grab him. It also points to Rob compositionally. In fact, you can see how all the lines in the drawing are all curved to point to Rob who is the center of interest.  Even the way Rob is standing follows the rhythm of the composition. Although if I was to finish the drawing, I would probably push his pose a bit more, in order to better emphasize this. Below the monsters, I have The Sorcerers directing their them to attack. If anything, The Sorcerers’ size bothers me because they seem small and non threatening.

When designing the backgrounds (in previous posts), I was very aware of trying to include shapes within the design that could be used as good “framing” foreground elements (CLICK HERE for a page of examples of what I’m taking about). I was also taught to try to avoid having any lines parallel to the picture frame when designing a background or a composition.  The exception to that rule being when you want to draw something more “iconic” or intentionally dull.  Also, most comedic staging, will often be very flat since the joke is the most important thing.

If you have any questions about anything I’ve written above, please feel free to ask.

Below, I will write a little about character design.

sb-22.jpg

The sketch with the monsters above, threw me on a small tangent. It seems I had forgotten what monsters I was going to use in my cartoon, so I reread my outline.  Realizing I had written  a flying ape monster, I suddenly got excited about drawing one. I immediately Googled “gorillas” . Below is what I ended up drawing:

sb-23.jpg

sb-24.jpg

sb-25.jpg

When I try out designs, I’m looking for interesting shapes.  I’m also looking for contrasting sizes within those shapes.  When I look at a photo, I don’t try to copy the photo so much as try to push the shapes I see in order to come up with a unique design.  Sometimes it works, other times it needs different variations.  The trick is to not have everything be even. For example, in the case of the ape above, I wanted the forearms to be longer and bigger than the upper arm in the first and last pages. In the middle page I experimented with the forearm being shorter.  I was also working on the contrast of having an enormous pointy head and a tiny face for interest. When it came to the torso, I tried to make sure it was either longer or shorter than the hind legs. In order to avoid line monotony, I also try putting straight lines across from curved line. Even if the straights and curved lines are “complex”. I also attempt to avoid parallel line in favor of tapered ones. Parallel lines in a character are often considered boring and unnatural.

It’s NOT about how well rendered a character is or how many doodas you put on the character.  Shape and “well balanced” shape CONTRAST is key to good character designs.  Rhythmically putting these things together makes a design sing.

Once you have that, make sure you give your character personality instead of just having it standing there like a robot. I recommend taking a good look at character designs in THE INCREDIBLES.

These are the things I look for in design AS I design. It’s the reason why I sometimes have the same figure on a page over and over. I’m just working on slight variations of shape contrasts and balances. If you look at some of my previous sketches of characters, you might be able to see what I’m trying to working out. Not everything I put on the page  “works”, which is the point of the exploration. To find what DOES.

I recommend looking at some “art of” books to see how other artist approach these things. You’ll see them using the same principles. If you have any questions of what I was taught about character design, please feel free to ask.

Still on the Couch Gag. Thumbnailing more shots. Someone erased my name of my animated gif. Drawing in public.

July 29, 2010 in ART, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEOS, WEBSITES

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Still working on that crazy Couch Gag this week.  I’m very surprised at how much work is being put into it.  I doubt anyone will say anything more than, “Wow, that was a weird Couch Gag,” and then forget about it and watch the show.  Oh well, it’s not like it isn’t fun to work on, so I don’t really mind. It’s just interesting to note.

I’ve also been working on revising Act 2.  This show has the least revisions of any show so far this season.  It’s a darn funny show.  Can’t wait to see the final version.

ART

(For those of you coming in late to these posts, if you want to read what my project is about, CLICK HERE to learn about the general world the story takes place in, and CLICK HERE if you want to know the story itself.)

It feels now like I’m just drawing for the sake of drawing and I’m not getting anywhere with my project.  I just want to get on with finishing it at this point.  It feels to me, as if I’ve solved everything and I’m ready to start with the “good stuff”.  I know this is just me being impatient though. The last time I worked on a personal project, jumped right in and started working without solving everything, I got myself in trouble.  Halfway through my project, I realized there were some art issues I hadn’t resolved and it ended up causing problems.  Had I taken the time to work them out earlier, it would have been a smoother process.

For my own sake, I might as well write down what I still need to do.

  1. Decide on a final look for the cartoon by drawing a clean concept piece.
  2. Design monsters.
  3. Tighten up the story a bit more in order to know what monsters to design.
  4. Come up with a color scheme for the cartoon and characters (see 1.).
  5. Finalize all the Sorcerer designs.
  6. Once the final look is decided, do an animation test.

(Sigh) It kinda sounds like a lot to do before I can even begin storyboarding.

I’ve been trying to complete task No. 1.  It’s tricky  because I want to draw a finished piece that incorporates some of the “fun” things I want to draw in the cartoon.  I decided that the thumbnail sketches I had been drawing depicted a scene that didn’t have much action in it. I’ve decided to see if I could, maybe, draw a picture with something exciting going on. This is what I’ve got so far:

sd-21.jpg

I’m still going to need do a few more thumbnails though. I think I want to, at least, show  the  Sorcerers more. I want the drawing to say, “Danger and excitement” all in one drawing while allowing me to work on the color and style of the cartoon.

WEBSITES

So I followed the source of a link that lead to my blog out of curiosity. I found one of my animated GIF files that I did years ago, being talked about on a Spanish speaking forum.  To my surprise, a couple of posts later, I found that one of the forum users had translated it into SPANISH. I thought it was great that the person did that and I was really flattered. Then I looked closer at the translated version and saw the translator had decided to take my name off it. Why?!

I was planning to put the translated version up here on my blog.  I was going to but my name back on it but I found out, to my dismay, that I couldn’t.  I don’t know how the guy managed to edit my GIF but I wasn’t able to edit his.  So I’ve decided NOT to put the translated version here even though I thought it was neat.

Perhaps I should do a translated version myself instead. Maybe next week, if I have time. Meanwhile, here’s the original version of the GIF if you haven’t seen it yet:

Superman Batman tell each other off

I just finished rereading the original blog article this drawing was posted with. It seems I was going a little insane at the time.  It also answers the question as to why the drawing is signed “Frog 08”.

VIDEO

I liked this cartoon below. It’s sad but true. When an artist goes out and draws in public, this sometimes happens:

Couch Gag pressure. Double dad birthday. Good reference for backgrounds in Pasadena. PALEFACE, a new Jim Lujan cartoon.

July 22, 2010 in ART, GHETTOMATION, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Well, this week has been interesting. I was put on, what turned out to be, a very high profile Couch Gag.  Yeah, it’s very odd. The gag has a special guest writer and it seems to be very important to the Big Guys, so I had to do the best work I’d done so far. Especially since it was going to be looked at under a microscope by all the Big Guys and the guest writer.

Ouch! What’s that squishing me from above? Oh yeah, PRESSURE.

FAMILY

It was my dad’s birthday this week and my father-in-laws birthday last Saturday. Happy Birthday DADS!

ART

(For those of you coming in late to these posts, if you want to read what my project is about, CLICK HERE to learn about the general world the story takes place in, and CLICK HERE if you want to know the story itself.)

Pasadena rocks. It’s my favorite town in LA. That’s one of the reasons I lived there for two years or so.  It’s great, and I love visiting it.  One of the things I like about Pasadena is that it has some of the prettiest places hidden away in it. When I decided to take photos to use as reference for the background of my cartoon, Pasadena was, almost, the only place on my list to go to.

So I decided to go and take photos of places I remembered, that I thought would help me flesh out my backgrounds.  The first was a place on Lake Ave. near the Borders book store.  I thought I might be able to use the architecture here as well as get an idea of what an enclosed space might look like.  At this point I was planning to make the fight happen in a place similar to this, only without the ceiling and a bit less narrow. I took a few pictures but I’m only putting up one:

Pasadena 01

On the way to the destination above, I caught a glimpse of a place I might have wanted to take a look at next on Green St. I stopped by there and took a look around.  It fit the idea I was going for a bit better even though it was still a bit too small an area.  It also had a fountain and I thought was a nice touch I might want to put in. Below is one of the many pictures I took.

Pasadena 02

As I was looking for parking to take photos of the the place above, another place caught my eye. A place I had never seen before, even though I’ve driven by it tons of times. This was also on Lake Ave. near Green St. I decided to investigate.

Low and behold, I found the place my story was going to take place in.  It was perfect. With a few modifications (like cobble stone floors and no buildings behind the main buildings) it would be exactly what I wanted.  It was a small plaza with enough space for a fight but with enough obstacles to make it entertaining and fun to destroy. I didn’t even know that place was there.

Pasadena 03

Pasadena 04

Pasadena 05

Once I had my photos, I began my sketching. This is some of what I did using the photos as reference:

sb-19.jpg

One of the changes I’m making to the reference material is putting in the fountain from the other photo.  You can see it in the floor plan view above.

After doing those sketches, I decided to continue making up some thumbnail roughs for a more finished picture. Ironically the placement of the figures are such that you don’t even see the background all that much. Still, it makes me feel more comfortable knowing there is a rough design of the background.

sb-20.jpg

I’m still not sure if I’m going to use any of these shots.  I kinda want some full figures as well as some background showing. Now that I have a better idea of what everyone and everything roughly looks like, I really need to finalize the look of the cartoon.

GHETTOMATION

Jim Lujan has released  a new cartoon called PALEFACE and it’s great. Jim‘s a very important guy to me. He’s the guy whose inspired me to work on my OWN animated cartoons:

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Ooh, job pressure is rising.  Turns out Act 3 had more changes than Act 1.  I started working on it and got pulled off it in order to work on a couch gag.  That meant I had even less time to revise Act 3. Now I’ve got to really crank it out so I can be done by tomorrow since it’s my last day before I move on to another show.

In other studio news, I made my way by the ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN animated show area of the studio earlier this week and saw all the development art on the walls.  It’s sooo cool. I love the visual ideas that are coming out for the show.  I’m curious what they’re going to ultimately stick with.

ART

(For those of you coming in late to these posts, if you want to read what my project is about, CLICK HERE to learn about the general world the story takes place in, and CLICK HERE if you want to know the story itself.)

Color color color. Color is sooo important, and yet I’m so new at working with it.  It’s going to be one of those learning moments for me.

I’ve gotten to the point in this process where things are overlapping.  On the one hand I need to finalize the designs of the characters. The thing is, I need to also decide what style I want to finally go with. Which in turn informs the colors that I will use in the final product.  Should I start with the colors first? I mean, the characters have to wear colors that will make them stand out from the background right? I still haven’t designed the backgrounds though. This means I need to work on them, but how should I approach them? Should I paint shapes or sketch them like I did the characters?  In the end, whatever I draw will be informed by the style I choose to go with. You see how they all tie together?

In the end I think I’m going to need to play around in sketches to see what style I want as a final look.  As I do this I’m going to be designing the backgrounds and finalizing the characters. In doing so, I hope that all of it combined will end with a final look that I might like.  Personally, think introducing any color will be the most difficult part for me.

Now to change the subject.

A bit down below is my second attempt at finding a skin color for Rob that I like. I’ve also reworked his hair design. Once again, I don’t think I’ve succeeded in the color department. The hair, on the other hand, I like.  I really didn’t like what his hair looked like before.  The Man vs. Art, Raul Aguirre Jr. suggested I should look at some anime characters for hair ideas.  I thought I WAS, since I’m so heavily influenced by that style. But being influenced and actually studying a thing, are two different things. So I thought to myself, what anime hair do I want to be influence by? Well, I kinda wanted  Rob to have big late 70s early 80s anime hair, so after thinking about it I looked at the character of Rick Hunter/Hikaru Ichijyo from ROBOTECH/MACROSS.

rick_hunter.JPG

He wasn’t my only influence but I wanted big poofy hair like that. So I looked back at my reference picture of Tom Welling:

tom-welling.jpg

and tried to design it to look a bit more anime-ish:

sb-17.jpg

Since I was also thinking about the final look of the cartoon, I went back and looked at the pictures that influence me to begin with:

cap003.jpg

The thing about the artwork was that it was cool and cartoony, but the end result, also reminded me of Alphonse Mucha‘s art:

https://i0.wp.com/www.artinthepicture.com/artists/Alphonse_Mucha/seasons.jpeg

So I thought that, I’d look at Mucha’s work and try to do my version of it, but without all the super detailed curves and things (for the sake of my sanity). I just wanted the general impression of his work.

sb-18.jpg

I didn’t have time to color it, which makes a pretty big difference.  In the end, I don’t think I succeeded and what I ended up with, kinda looks a bit more like a page out of a kid’s coloring book than Mucha. At some point I’ll add some color and maybe add all the curves and decorations in Photoshop using Paths.

What I DO like about the drawing, is that I can see a final version of the character now.  The hammer still needs work.  Especially the hilt.  It kinda looks awful, but I definitely think I’m going with this design as the final look for Rob

Backgrounds, colors and White Ravens. Alesha writes about taking care of your hair.

July 8, 2010 in Alesha's Business, ART, BUTTERFLY BEAUTE, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSON NEWS

It’s a four day work week this week.  As much as like getting a day off, I hate having less days to do my job.  The schedule doesn’t change because of any days off we have.  It just means we have less time to do our work. I’m starting on a new show this week and I’ve had to hit the ground running.  Hope I can finish what I need to finish.

ART

I decided to start thumbnailing a more finished drawing with all the characters, only to discover that I hadn’t designed the raven. Well, I began sketching right away. But, how do you design a “heroic” raven?

sb-13.jpg

I came up with a design fairly quickly.  In earlier sketches of the raven, I think I had hit a design I kinda liked.  All I had to do was push it a bit more.  I also chose to give him a “hairdo”.  He now has a bit of slicked back “hair”. I thought it gave him  a bit of “greaser” vibe.

sb-14.jpg

An interesting thing happened as I looked for reference online for the raven. As I looked up photos and typed out “raven”, google suggested “white raven”.  White raven? So I clicked on that.  BAM! I got a ton of photos of white ravens! I didn’t know there were such things.  Wow, I’d never heard of anyone using a white raven in a story before, so I decided there and then that the raven in my story, was going to be WHITE.  This is the reason the drawing in the bottom left of the page above is NOT darkened like the others.

ajun0807ravens061.jpg

Last week, Maria Johnson (of the CATHOLIC WEEKEND podcast, among other things) left a comment that gave me a good jumping off point for my background designs.   She thought, maybe I could use a Schnitzel stand in Germany, like they have in Bamberg. I haven’t been to Bamberg so I had no visual reference. I decided to try to google some reference.  I was not surprised to find that I couldn’t find anything.  I DID manage to find ONE photo that, even though it’s probably not what Maria was talking about,  gave me an idea of what I wanted to do in the end.

This is the photo:
schnitzel stands Pictures, Images and Photos

I love the size of the stand and how open it is.  I love the space too. It seems enclosed yet open enough. Cobble stone floor? I’m so using that.  How awesome it that castle on the hill?

Below are some thumbnails for pictures I might develop into finished pieces. I also drew a top down view of what I might want the location to look like.  I’ve recently taken some pictures that will help me develop it even more:

sb-15.jpg

After that I decided that I might want to start figuring out the colors for my characters.  I took out some Prismacolor Markers, My Pentel brush pen, a colored pencil and began to sketch.  I was originally trying to just solve Rob’s hair (which is a pain in the butt to figure out). I thought that, while I was at it, I might as well ink it and do color experiments.

It was a disaster.  The colors I used were  just the wrong ones. They looked all  muddy.  I hadn’t planned the coloring well enough. When I scanned the drawing to put it up here on the blog, the scanner had managed to improve the colors a bit from the original.  I used Photoshop to try to fix them a bit more but nothing I did helped. The best I could do was what you see below:

sb-16.jpg

Trust me, the original is worse.  Rob is suppose to be dark skinned not pink. The color I originally used was “Mocha Light” but it looked awful.

I guess I really should just use Photoshop to color my drawings. It would be much easier…but…I just feel like using my markers, darn it!

The drawing on the right, drawn on the Post It, was a doodle I did one day, just for the heck of it.  It’s not quite right but there are things about it that I want to keep for Robs final design.

I got more drawn then usual.  There were only two days of World Cup games last week.

Articles about understanding introverts. Long lunch break. More sketches. CTN Videos

July 1, 2010 in ART, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEOS

THE SIMPSON NEWS

I managed to finish my ACT 2 assignment on Monday.  I would have finished it last week, only I took a longer lunch break than usual last Friday. I went to a local sports bar, with co-workers, to watch the Spain vs. Chile game.  It was a lot of fun, but it meant I had to make up the hours this week.

I’m now working on ACT 4, which has less to do than ACT 2.  I’m hoping to be done sometime today.

ART

Okay, so this page of drawings was just drawn to have something to post up. I did some adjusting on the Sorceress’ face so that it was a bit more stylized. I also drew out her face so I could, at least, see what she looked like.  I straighten out her skirt so it wasn’t so girly, and I worked out a bit of the arm detail of the long haired Sorcerer’s arm:

sb-12.jpg

On Monday, my wife got invited to a get together with some friends from her work and the whole family went.  At one point during the evening I did my typical anti-social thing and began drawing in a corner. I decided that I was going to try to draw Steve Buscemi from a photo. I pulled a picture up on my phone and began to draw it.  The reason I did this was, since I was using him as inspiration, I thought it wouldn’t hurt to just try to capture his likeness “for real” in case I could apply what I learned from doing so to my design. So this is what I drew:

steve-b.jpg

Red color pencil under drawing, inked with a Pentel brush pen. I used 2 Copic neutral grey markers and a black one for tone with a Whiteout pen for highlights. It came out okay but I think if I drew a few more I would eventually “be right on”.  I think, had you not known it was him, you would find that it looks familiar but you couldn’t put you’re finger on who he was suppose to be. At least it was fun to do and it’s WAY better than my other attempts.

So did I learn anything for having drawn the above drawing? I have no idea.

I definitely want to start on the backgrounds now. I’m going to see if I can find some time this weekend to go out and “location scout”. It’s possible I won’t be able to though, since I have a wedding to go to this Saturday  two hours away.

I’m still not sure where exactly my story should take place.  At first I thought it should take place outside a Wienerschnitzel type place. Then I was thinking that it might be better if it’s takes place in front of a portable hot dog stand.  If that’s the case, the story can take place, just about anywhere.  Thing is, I want Rob (the protagonist) to sit down on a bench to eat.  Then again, he could sit on a wall or…well just about anywhere.  So where should this take place?  A park? A street corner? I want obstacles and things to destroy so that at the end we just see the smoldering ruin of the area they just fought in. Also, it would be nice to have some “natural” obstacles so that it’s more difficult for Rob to get away. Any ideas?

If I don’t manage to get any photo reference, I’ll try doing a “style test” with all the characters. Basically I’ll just do a finished drawing with all of them in a picture, possibly in color.

I’ve known about this for a while but I kept forgetting to post about it.

It’s a video of Pixar storyboard artists at a panel from the CTN Animation Expo last year. It’s tough being an introvert in a world of extroverts.  There’s a lot of misunderstanding that comes along with being one. I know, since I AM one.

Two years ago, at the end of a post on this blog, I linked to an article called:

Caring for Your Introvert.

I’m not sure how many people caught that link since it came at the end of a long random bit of writing. I found the article refreshing and enlightening. I thought it was important enough to call attention to it since it helps people understand introverts a lot more.

Recently I’ve become aware of yet another article on introverts.  It’s a good compliment to the article above so I thought I’d post a link to it too.  Read both these article if you want to learn more about the introvert in your life:

The World Cup is taking all my time. Couch Gags and pressure. Ambrose goes to daycare. STAR WARS video games. HBO’s A Game of Thrones.

June 17, 2010 in ART, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEO GAMES, VIDEOS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

After having finished with a Couch Gag on Monday and the finishing touches on Act 1 of show 3 on Tuesday, I was assigned one of the craziest, most complicated Couch Gag I’d ever done and it’s do Friday…no pressure.

MY WEEK

Okay, so I loooovve watching the World Cup. It’s the only time I go out of my way to watch ANY sport.  I don’t really do that but for the World Cup, I make an exception.  Why? I don’t know. The tournament has a  special place in my heart, I think, from watching it with family and friends and the vibe has never left me. I just enjoy it A LOT.

Problem is, it’s taking up all my time.  At least, all the time I’ve reserved to work on my private things like this blog and my personal projects.  The games just happen to fall exactly during the times I tend to use to work on those two things.  I’m writing this so you’re not surprised as to why my blog entries are suddenly so short and uninspired for the next Month.

It’s the World Cup’s fault.

ART

World Cup is taking all my time so I didn’t really get much drawn this week.  I developed the Sorceress a little bit more.  Decided on a face and refined the shapes a bit more to my liking:

sb-10.jpg

FAMILY

Ambrose went to daycare for the first time this week.  He and his big brother and sister went to daycare everyday (except Tuesday, where they spent it with my parents) this week and the next. Alesha has gone back to work for the next two weeks and then the school year ends.

Ambrose was a very good baby and behaved himself. I’m very proud of the little booger.

VIDEO GAMES

STAR WARS video games have some of the best cinematic. Case in point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdBz62oPQh8&feature

It looks like they took the likeness of actor Sam Witwer and modeled it into the character.

And then there is this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYz7BxXUuJU&feature

There is something kinda DRAGONBALL Z about it.

VIDEOS

For those of you who are fan of George R. R. Martin’s SONG OF ICE AND FIRE books and have yet to see this, here is the teaser trailer for the HBO series based on the books:

Tough work week. Character design silhouettes. Rithmomachia

June 10, 2010 in ART, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Wow, talk about work overload.  I’m helping to revise show 3 for the next two weeks.  It got a MAJOR rewrite.  I didn’t get to work on it right away though. I was told to start boarding the Couch Gag for the show first. This turned out out to be a huge job. The gag was practically a short story and it’s long for a Couch Gag. It was asking for some really tough things which meant there were some very complicated problems to solve  Truly challenging.

After finishing my first rough pass, I was told I had to start revising Act 1.   Boy oh boy did it get overhauled.  It wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for the fact that early into the act there was a huge dream sequence that required a lot of fancy styled shots. This small section of the board would be as challenging as the Couch Gag and it was only one small part of all the fixes I need to do.

So I started the Act, and midway through I was told  I need to finish the Couch Gag boards as soon as possible.  I had to stop my work on Act 1, which I was already behind with, and had to restart the Couch Gag board.

It’s turning out to be one heck of a tough week.

ART

I continued to explore the characters this week, trying to find the right face and shape for the Duran Duran Sorcerer:

sb-06.jpg

I made up my mind fairly quickly (maybe too quickly) with the look I was going to go with for the Sorceress. Which used this picture as reference:

nuclear02.jpg

sb-07.jpg

I then decided to focus specifically on the silhouettes of the characters:

sb-08.jpg

The “final” silhouettes I placed at the top of the page below.  I put quotes on the word final because I’m still giving myself a little bit of leeway to adjust them if I need to, or get rid of them all together (I’m not 100% sure about the Sorceress yet, I might be rushing her). I’m the most happy with Rob’s silhouette.

I then decided to really start working out the details of the characters again.  I decided to start with the lead Sorcerer’s face, since I  felt I was close.  I accidentally hit upon a design for his face that I REALLY like. It’s not a solidly constructed drawing but it will do for now:

sb-09.jpg

FINALLY! Two down, two more to go. After that, I have to design the backgrounds and the monsters. Plus test the flat stylized look I’m going to want to use, which means, doing an animation test.

So far all this has been fun and frustrating all at the same time.  After so many bad designs, it feels good when you hit one you like.

PODCAST

So I decided to listen to Catholic Under the Hood this week.  It’s a great podcast if you’re interested in Catholic history. he explorers lots of different things historical but from the Catholic perspective.  The latest episode was right up my alley since it was about a board game.

Rithmomachia.

Here’s what Fr. Seraphim wrote about it the show:

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Rithmomachia was one of the most popular games played in the universities and theological schools and promoted by Roger Bacon and Thomas More. Today, it has fallen into obscurity.

The show was really informative. So much so that it made me want to write a story from the info it put forth.   The game itself also sounded fascinating. Don’t know how much fun it would be to play, but the idea of the game is really cool. Great fuel for stories.

In order to talk about the game so that the audience could understand the relevance of the game to the mind of a person in the middle ages, Fr. Seraphim  had to explain the way the people saw number back then.  I couldn’t help but think of the numbers from  LOST.

Highly recommend listening to the podcast. CLICK HERE to do so.

Designing modern Sorcerers. My mom’s birthday. Playing board games.

June 3, 2010 in ART, BOARD GAMES, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I’ve started opening the door to the office I’m in. It gets really lonely in that big room and it helps me feel like there are people out there when I leave it open.  It helps invite people to come in and say hi as well. That helps.

Last week, I got locked out of my office. I came in at 7am and found the door locked and I didn’t have a key.  Lucky for me, my producer gets in around 8:30am so she opened it for me.  While I had time, I cleaned up my old cubicle a bit and wandered around the studio. Especially in the area of the studio where they’re producing the Marvel comics animated shows, like HERO SQUAD and THE AVENGERS. I walked around and geeked out over all the cool superhero artwork on the walls.  It was both a fun and irritating morning.

FAMILY

Saturday was my mom’s birthday. We celebrated it by taking her out to a picnic in a park by a lake. We had a great time. We threw Frisbees, ate sandwiches, took walks, threw rocks in the lake and generally had a good time spending time with her, even though I got sun burned…and really sore.  Ouch.

Happy Birthday Mommie! I love you.

BOARD GAMES

Two articles ago I wrote about how Mariam and Anthony came over with baby River and how Anthony and I played some board games. I also wrote about how we were going to plan to get together to play again sometime but this time, with everyone.  Well, sometime was last Sunday.  They came by in the late afternoon so we had plenty of time to play.  It was going to be a big experiment, as far as I was concerned, because I wasn’t sure if the kids would let us play. We were going to play CRANIUM but their copy of the game had run off somewhere.  It was a shame because I think the kids might have been able to participate.  I ended up bring out CARCASSONNE because I thought the kids might want to participate helping out one of us in that game.

It sorta worked but Dante left in a huff after I told him he couldn’t flip over all the tiles and that he had to wait his turn. Elizabeth lasted a bit longer before she felt she wasn’t really playing, got up and left.  We played the game to it’s end and then ate dinner. I put the kids to bed after we were done eating and we started a game of TICKET TO RIDE: EUROPE.

It was a very fun game with quite a few laughs.  Especially once Anthony realized that he could start messing peoples routes up.  He messed me up pretty good a few times and then he tried messing Mariam up. Once the game was over we started counting up all the extra points.  That’s when the game really got interesting, mostly because Anthony and Mariam ended up with a tie for first place.  The tie breaker would be the “Longest Route” card.  Mariam won it and won the game.

We were all in good spirits after that and wanted to play something else but it was getting late.  I brought out LOOT, which is a twenty minute long game.  Alesha was on the phone pretty much the whole game, so it kinda messed up the fun of the game a bit.  The rest of us were having a huge battle for merchant ships.

Overall we had a good time and the kids were surprisingly good.  All of them, including the babies.   Baby Ambrose hung out at the table and watched a lot.  Unfortunately by the time I was holding him, he started getting fussy and  the place on the table I was sitting at made it awkward for me to take care him well.

We had fun, and it’s possible that we’ll do it again sometime.

ART

I’m definitely past the “not wanting to work on my project” hump.  Now, I can’t wait to get a chance to work on it.

Soon after I posted my last article, I remembered a website I bookmarked that might help me with my reference problem.  I checked it out. Turns out I was right. It was exactly what I needed. It had both, good costumes and great character types.  I spent my lunch hour downloading photos that I might be able use.  That same night, I came home and began to sketch from them:

sb-01.jpg

But then I thought to myself, maybe I should draw some silhouettes  before I continue drawing faces. I went and got my copy of THE SKILLFUL HUNTSMAN, opened it to the silhouettes pages for inspiration.

skillful_500.jpg

sil.jpg

The pages in the book where cool.  I thought to myself, I could do that. I was wrong:

sb-02.jpg

Wow, THAT didn’t go as planned. I rolled a critical miss on my “draw cool, well designed silhouette” skill check.  Doing them is waaay more difficult than I had anticipated. I thought I understood what I was doing but I guess not.  Frustrated, I stopped for the night and decided to try something else  the next day.

After reading my last post, Zach Bosteel suggested that I ought to look at actors Tilda Swinton and Steve Buscemi for inspiration for character types.  He was dead on. I thought they might actually work pretty well as Sorcerers. I started to sketch them:

sb-03.jpg

My drawings didn’t quite capture their likeness but that wasn’t the point.  I just wanted to capture their “type”. Still, I WAS trying to capture their likeness just as a personal challenge. Failed my “capture likeness” skill check too. You’d think with a face like Steve Buscemi’s I’d be able to draw him easier.  Tilda Swinton, is just a pain to draw since she’s so plain.  I’m just really bad a caricatures I guess. I need to practice it much more. I got what I wanted though, so I kept on going.

I then went into my photo reference and began mixing and matching a little. These are the photos I used:

00260m.jpg

fashion6-500×669.jpg

florian-again-499×533.jpg

nicomedetaw2010m01-500×750.jpg

My first thought (Groups 1 below) was to take the Steve Buscemi type and give him crazy hair while combining the vest from the guy (in the second photo above),  the long haired guy’s pants (from the third photo above) and the happy guy’s shoes (from the first photo).  In the end, I didn’t like it one bit.  I then used jawbone boy’s face (the last picture above) and put it on that body (Drawing 2 below). It worked better but I still wasn’t happy.:

sb-04.jpg

I gave that up and tried a different direction. I used the photo below and drew the guy on the left, pretty much, straight out  for drawing 3 (above):

julius-2.jpg

I  liked it.  I thought I could use that design as the second male Sorcerer. I thought it would be funny to give that guy a Steve Buscemi type face which would be the reason why wares his hair down over it.

A few days later I looked at some more photos and picked these:

anndemeulemeester-1.jpg

hj23-black.jpg

I took the guy  on the top right and tried drawing him (drawing 1 below).  I thought it was funny since the guy looks like a rejected Duran Duran band member.  I then thought I’d try something I’d been thinking about for a while and tried drawing jawbone boy with a hoodie (second photo above) (Drawing 2 below). I didn’t like it so I tried drawing the Duran Duran guy again using different shapes which I liked (Drawing 3 below).  I then skipped back to the other design idea and tried to make the collar work (Drawings 4 below) but it just made him look like an astronaut or something:

So far I’m leaning more in the direction of the Duran Duran guy.   I kinda like the idea for some reason. It makes me laugh. I also like the jawbone boy’s face thought. Either way, I’m getting closer to what I’m going to end up using.
