The story for my next project. Second week on board revisions. Playing board games.

May 20, 2010 in ART, BOARD GAMES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEO GAMES

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Second week doing board revisions. I’m getting a little bit more used to it.  I’ve been told that from this show until show 5 there’s just going to be a lot of rewriting of the shows after the story reel screenings.  This means I’m going to have some pretty crazy couple of Months.

To make things worse, I’ve come down with a really bad cold.  It’s a bad one but I came into work anyway since I really need to get the work done.  There is way too much work and I don’t want to drop it all on my friend’s lap if I have to take the rest of the week off.

ART

Last time I wrote about the basic setting my next project is going to take place in. This time, I’ll tell you the story I’m going to animate. If you don’t want to have it spoiled then don’t read on. Thing is, from now on when I write about the project and my progress, I’ll assume you know the story.

My goal with this story was to write the shortest story I could think of. Nothing epic at all.  Very simple. Something I know I can finish and at the same time have fun doing. It was very hard to come up with something that met all those requirements. Especially the “fun for me to do” part. Guess I’m very picky.

So here’s the rough idea of the story I have in mind:

After not eating for a day and a half, Rob Howard has finally managed to scrounge up enough money to buy a hot dog. Not just any Hot Dog but a Super Deluxe All Beef Ultra Dog with everything on it.  He and his Raven (which I haven’t yet named) are planning to share this hard earned feast.  He takes the Hot Dog to the nearest bench to sit down and eat it.  He’s been dreaming about eating this Hot Dog all day, and finally his dream is a reality.  He’s starving.

As he’s about to take a bite a shadow comes across him.  He stops and looks up to see three Sorcerers looming above him. He rolls his eyes and sighs.  The Sorcerer inform Rob they’re there to kill him.  That the prophesy will not be fulfilled. Rob is waaay to hungry to care. He just wants to eat his Hot Dog, so he asks the Sorcerers if they would just give him the courtesy of a few minutes so he could eat his Hot Dog in peace. They could try to kill him all they want after that.  The Sorcerer refuse and look as if they are about to attack.  Rob then pleads with them.  He asks if there is anything he can do just to get a minute.  The Sorcerers stop, look at each other, and maybe even converse.  They tell Rob that if he hands over his anti Sorcery Weapon, they will give him a minute.  Rob gladly accepts the terms telling them that he hates the thing and had no intention of using it anyway.  But he also tells them that the weapon has an annoying habit of coming back to him somehow. He hands over his weapon that, currently,  looks like small Medical Reflex Hammer. The Sorcerers take it, laugh at it and throw it away into the bushes.

Happily Rob grabs his Hot Dog for his first bite only to be stopped by an attack by the Sorcerers.  The bastards went back on the deal. Uneaten Hot Dog and plate still in hand, Rob tries to run for safety. He’s blocked and attacked by a Flying Ape.  He gets hurt but he’s still okay.  He tries to escape through other directions only to come faced to face with something similar. Flying Apes, Giant Serpents, Stone Elemental,  all prevent him from leaving and hurt him as he manages to dodge and evade them while always keeping his precious Hot Dog safe.  Meanwhile the Raven fights to protect Rob, attacking the creatures and the Sorcerers.  At one point, the Raven gets hit hard and gets thrown into the bushes.

Rob realizes there is no escape for him, so he decides to do what he should have done from the start, eat his Hot Dog in the middle of all the chaos. But even this is difficult as he’s attacked left and right, almost dropping the Hot Dog and losing the Hot Dog quite a few times.  Finally there is a small lull in the fighting. Rob has managed to lose the Hot Dog (still on the plate), only a few feet out of reach.  He crawls to it and reaches out to it. Time to finally eat, only to have the Hot Dog SMASHED by the boot of the lead Sorcerer.

The Hot Dog is no more.  The only thing Rob wanted. The only symbol of peace Rob had, was destroyed. The Raven flies out of the bushes, something gleaming in it’s talons. Rob looks at the ruins of the his Hot Dog and asks the Sorcerers why they didn’t just let him eat in peace for only a few minutes. Only a few minutes, that’s all he had asked for. Now they had crossed the line.

Rob gets on one knee, his shirt in taters, his pants burned and full of holes, his face scratched, his hair a mess. Sweat glistening off his battered bloody body. He reaches out his hand and the Raven drops the little hammer into his outstretched palm. Rob looks fiercely at the Sorcerers with a savagery that they’ve never seen in anyone’s eyes before.  The Hammer magically grows enormous. Almost bigger than Rob and yet he hold it as if it’s as lite as feather. The Sorcerers gulp. Beads of worried sweat on their foreheads.

Pay back.

Rob  attacks. The Flying Ape, The Giant Serpent, and the Stone Elemental go to protect their masters, only to get dispatched with ease by the enormous swingings of the hammer. The Sorcerers throw out all the magick they can in order to get away from the berserker coming at them. Nothing stops him.  Bam! goes one. Downed by the massive hit of the hammer to the chest.  The demon that gave the Sorcerer his magick is knocked out of it’s body leaving him powerless.  A second or two later, the same happens to another. He’s out for the count.  Finally the leader tries a last effort.  It fails. The hammer knocks the demon out the Sorcerer’s body and the guy is now defenseless. Rob walks over and picks up the quivering man.  He looks him straight in the eyes, “You owe me a Hot Dog”.

A trembling Hot Dog vendor standing in the midst of the chaos and rubble of the battle is asked politely for a Super Deluxe All Beef Ultra Dog by the now powerless leader of the trio of Sorcerers.  The Raven lands on Rob’s shoulder. He looks at his bird friend, “Make that two.”

The End

At this point the story is still malleable, but this is pretty much what it will be like.

What appeals to me about the story so far is the potential for really dramatic serious moments juxtaposed with lite comedic moments.  After all, it’s about a Hot Dog.

What do you think?

Rob Howard

The drawing above is another version of Rob I sketched out.  I like the drawing but I’m not sure the design of the face is where I want to take the character.

BOARD GAMES/VIDEO GAMES

I’ve been playing a surprising amount of games lately…well…sorta.  I’ve been playing some board games and some video games with my kids.  I’ve been testing out the capacity of my kids to play board games by the rules.  I’ve also been testing them to see how well they catch on to playing video games.  Why? Well, for one thing, I’m DESPERATE to play games with SOMEONE. Also, I want to keep the kids entertained because we can’t always go out and play at the community playground.

I’ve discovered that Dante, my two year old, is a bit of a lazy video game player.  Around his age, his sister used to at least press the buttons because she understood that she was somehow doing something on the screen.  Dante doesn’t do that. I think he understand that he’s doing something but for some reason he’d rather just passively watch the screen. He refuses to press the buttons.  I don’t know why. It almost seems like he’d rather have someone else to do it for him.

When it comes to board games, Dante is a little better.  He know how to take his turn and depending on the game, he follows the rules to some extent. What he really enjoys is being on the table somehow participating in the activity.  He especially likes it when I’m there on the table playing with them.  I’ve left them with some board games by themselves to see how they would play it on their own but he loses interest very quickly.

Elizabeth, my 3 year old, is a different story.  She loves to play video games and tries VERY hard to learn how to control the game.  I remember when she was around Dante’s age, she tried hard to play video games with far less success.  Now that she’s older, things are starting to make a little more sense to her. More often than not, when playing video games, the “game”, for her is moving something on the screen around.  Although I brought out a Space Invaders Playstation 1 game that came out in 1999 and had her play it. She learned it pretty quickly and knew what to do. She actually managed to clear the first level of “Invaders”. Later we played it cooperatively and had a great time.

I’ve found that Elizabeth “gets” the idea of playing board games now too.  She understand that there are rules and that they need to be followed in order to play a game.  One time, I took out some Dominoes.  I thought that they would probably just stack them and play around with them, making up their own games like they do sometimes.  Instead after looking and playing with them for about a minute, Elizabeth turn to me and asked me what we where suppose to DO with them.  She wanted some sort of rules that we could play a game with.  I was very surprised.  We played an open hand game of basic Dominoes and she caught on really quick.  With her, I can play very simple games and she’ll play by the rules. I’ve also found that basic roll and move games bore her.  Awesome.

It’s tricky to play games with both kids since they are each at different levels of comprehension. It’s great when I find a game that they each can understand how to play.  It’s even better when I find a game that they each understand how to play and I also enjoy playing.  Now, Dante comes up to me everyday and asks to play a game with me. His exact words are:

dante-asking-for-games.jpg

…in a very sing song way. He never fails to say “for” instead of “with”. It makes me smile every time. Even when I’m too tired to play.

BOARD GAMES

In other board game news, on Saturday, Alesha asked me if I wanted to play a board game. What do you think I said?

Well, we played LOST CITIES.  As always, I lost and Alesha laughed at me.  No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to beat her at that game. To see my review of that game CLICK HERE.

Then I played a game of BATTLELORE.  I wanted to play this game mainly to use the magic and “Lore” mechanic in the game.  Especially since I hadn’t yet. Unlike the last time I played BATTLELORE with Alesha, I managed to win this game, although it wasn’t a very satisfying win since we got a rule wrong and Alesha was confused about some rules at the beginning of the game so…it kinda doesn’t really “count”.

Also, this Tuesday one of my Alesha’s best friend Mariam came over in the evening with her husband Anthony and their baby daughter River (who’s a total cutie).  Turns out Anthony likes gaming, and he brought over a MARIO BROTHERS Chess set.  Seconds after saying hello we were sitting across from each other playing Chess.  I have a chess clock I had only used once. Since I’m a really slow Chess player, I thought it would be fun to use it. Otherwise my 15 minute long turns would get old real quick.  We played three games. I must say Anthony has some skills because he really had me running every game by at least the third move.  It didn’t help that I was making really bad blunders too.   My biggest flaw in playing Chess is my lack of full awareness of the board. I always tend to focus too much in one area and miss the potential of other pieces on the board. Needless to say, I lost every game.  It was fun though.

Somewhere during that time we managed to eat our dinner. Which was reeaaallly good. I almost wish I  hadn’t been playing a game so I could enjoy it more…almost. I’d rather game than eat.

While we were in a Chess mood, I brought out HIVE. Since HIVE uses the same type of mindset as Chess, Anthony not only picked it up right away, but thrived in it.  He beat me two out of three games.  Pretty cool.  We had fun playing that too.

As we played HIVE, Anthony brought up LORD OF THE RING STRATEGO. I’d never played it, but I do own LORD OF THE RINGS: THE CONFRONTATION: DELUXE EDITION. So I brought it out and we played  two games of that, switching sides after each game.  We both lost using the Fellowship pieces and each game was intense and different. We had a good time with that.  Meanwhile Elizabeth really wanted to play too.  Poor kid, someday when she’s older we could play those games.

It’s funny but I think, by the types of games I brought out, I gave the impression that all I have to play are heavy Chess like strategy games.  As I was thinking about it, I realized that I DO have some really heavy “thinky” games. But I do have some “lite” and/or “family” type games too, like: TICKET TO RIDE: EUROPE, TICKET TO RIDE: THE CARD GAME, CARCASSONE, BOHNANZA, DEAD MONEY, DOMINION, HOITY TOITY, TALES OF THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, INGENIOUS, MODERN ART, SETTLER OF CATAN, CRANIUM: ZIGITY, WITS AND WAGERS, QWIRKLE, CRANIUM HOOPLA, LIAR’S DICE, LOOT, UNCLE CHESTNUT’S TABLE GYPE, TRIPOLEY, and SORRY SLIDERS.

As they were leaving, we mentioned something about, perhaps next time, instead of just Anthony and I playing, we could all four play a game.  They mentioned playing their game of CRANIUM.  That wouldn’t be a bad way to start a game night. Hope we can soon.

Uncle Chestnut Table Gype review. First week in my new position.

May 13, 2010 in BOARD GAMES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

So I started my new job as a board revisionist this week.  I discovered how well the screening went on show 1.  We did a good job but the writers and producers didn’t like what they had written.  70% of the show was re-written and my friend Erick and I became responsible for revising the board.  We have two weeks to finish all four acts.  This big a re-write isn’t usual so, my first show on board revisions is going to be as close to a worst case scenario as it could be. Although Erick tells me it can get worse sometimes. As was the case when I storyboarded on The Simpsons Movie, I was thrown head first into the deep end and it’s up to me whether or not I’ll be able to swim.

After being on the job now for four days, I’m confident that I’ll be okay.  I managed to finish the first part of my assignment before lunch on Wednesday and received my act 2 work later that day.  As long as we finish all the revisions by the end of next week, we’ll be okay.  It seems doable. Especially since acts 3 and 4 are in much better shape.

I’m going to be moving out of my cubicle sometime next week and going into an office which I will share with one of the veteran board artists on the show.  It all seems very exciting to me.  I’m having fun.

BOARD GAMES

I while back I wrote about a board game called Uncle Chestnut’s Table Gype, designed and published by Paul Nowak of Eternal Revolutions.  Well, in February for my birthday, I received the game as a gift from Paul. You have no idea how excited I was.  I read the rules as soon as I was able and I thought the game sounded really great. The first person to actually play with the game though, was my daughter. The moment she saw the game she was asking me if she could play it. I let her have it and she sat at her little table and played with the pieces, staking them and knocking them down.  That’s not how you play the game but she’s a little kid and she just liked the pieces. A week or two later, I managed to get a game of it played with my brother. Then a week later I played a game with my brother and his wife.  A week or two after that, I played with my wife.  So what do I think of the game?  I LIKE IT A LOT. So now I’m going to review it for you.

Uncle Chestnut’s Table Gype 01

What is it?

Uncle Chestnut’s Table Gype is a 2 – 4 player abstract game that can best be described as a cross between Chinese Checkers and Chess but unlike either of those games it has a small element of chance.

Who’s Uncle Chestnut?

Uncle Chestnut it the nickname G.K. Chesterton‘s nephew gave him. Table Gype is therefore a Chesterton themed game.  The cloth board the game is played on, has Chesterton quotes on each side, relating to games.  The icons on the playing pieces are actually taken from themes related to Chesterton‘s writings. I’m a fan of G.K. Chesterton so I like the overall “theme” of the game.

Uncle Chestnut’s Table Gype 02

How does it play?

The object of the game is like Chinese Checker, to get your pieces to the home base opposite from yours.  The board is a cloth game board with an 8×8 grid on it and home bases extending out one extra row on each side.

Uncle Chestnut’s Table Gype 03

All players are given their 8 playing pieces.  The pieces are dice with a different icons on each face. The icons on each dice are:  The Flame, The Book, The Tree, The Swords, The Hat, and The Ear. The icons dictate the way each piece moves when that icon is facing up. For example: The Flame moves like a King in Chess, one space in any direction, while The Book moves one space vertically or horizontally. The Ears means you can’t move at all (ears are bad).

Uncle Chestnut’s Table Gype 04

Each player starts the game with the following faces showing on their dice: 2 Swords, 2 Trees, 2 Books, and 2 Flames and they can be placed in any order on your starting Home Base. On a player’s turn, they could do ONE of two actions, either move a piece or roll a piece.  If a piece you move can jump over another piece, either you own or your opponents, you can jump over it, like in Chinese Checker.  You can even link the jumps (like in Chinese Checkers) as long as the piece can legally move in that direction. The trick is that, every piece that is jumped over is NOT captured but must, instead, be re-rolled. Depending on the roll, the piece may change it’s movement or it can even become unable to move (this happens if an Ear is rolled).

Uncle Chestnut’s Table Gype 05

Once one of the players gets all his pieces to the Home Row opposite the one he started from, they win. That’s it. Very simple game.

Why I like it.

Okay, so I like Chess. I think it’s a it’s a great game. Also one of my favorite games is Chase which also uses dice as pieces (I reviewed this game in another article a while back).  I enjoy games where the pieces are versatile too.  Here’s the thing though, both Chess and Chase are “brain burners”, that is to say, that they hurt my head when I play them because there is just so much thinking ahead  that must be done when you play them. Table Gype is not like that.  It’s got very Chess like elements in how you think and move you’re pieces but because of the random factor of your pieces being able to potentially change movement if they’re jumped over, you really can’t plan too far ahead. It forces you to think on the fly as the game progresses. In other words, where Chess and Chase are more strategic, Table Gype is much more tactical. What this does when you  play is, it lightens the game so that it’s not so “serious” and makes it very fun and lighthearted.

I played this game with my brother and he really enjoyed it. He’s not much of a Chess player. In fact I’m not sure he likes Chess but we had a great time playing Table Gype. It was a close game and my brother won. I also got a chance to play the game with him and his wife and discovered that having another player on the board was actually just as fun.  It was a bit more chaotic but in a good way.  You never felt that you had no control just that you needed to be far more tactical. I managed to pull off a win by one move.  When I played the game against my wife, she enjoyed it so much, she asked to play it again. So we did. So far the game has been a hit in my family.

The first time I played with my wife, she was doing some things with her pieces that got me thinking.  The second time around, I decided to test my theory.  What I did was try to set up my pieces in such a way that I could create a “road” of pieces for my other pieces to jump so I could develop my pieces faster.  I did much better in that game than I did the first.  I realized that the game had a lot of potential for opening set ups and opening moves.

I will say this about the game though, it’s possible that luck may play a big role in the game.  If two equally matched opponents where to play the game, it’s possible that the one with the better luck would be the winner. That said, the game is so quick to play that you can always play any number of games to balance out the luck.  In the three player game I played against my brother and my Sister-in-law, my brother played a much better game than us but I managed to pull of some lucky rolls that turned my pieces into Hats (they move like Knights in Chess).  This allowed me to be able to move my pieces to my Home Row fast. I managed to pull off the win just barely.  Still, I had to really puzzle out HOW to move the pieces in the most efficient way I could in order to get the pieces in the right spots before my brother won. As I wrote above, I won that game by one move.

An experienced player will almost always win a less experienced player, but there is a possibility that a less experienced player may get lucky and win a game.  That actually makes it fun.

If you don’t like the luck, the game rules comes with a “no luck” variant as well other changes to the rules you might enjoy playing with.  In the end, I must say, this is a game worth having.  It can be deep but it’s accessible to everyone. Especially since it has that familiarity of Chinese Checkers and Chess.  It’s an odd combo but it’s two great taste that taste great together. I highly recommend it.

Back at work again. The Seven Impossible Tasks PART 3. Art Center blog on Warming up for Figure drawing. Macross Frontier.

March 25, 2010 in ART, BLOGS, BOARD GAMES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEO GAMES, VIDEOS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Came back on the show this week and it was as if I’d never left.  I was handed 32 scenes to finish by the end of the week (yikes!) and I’m off and running. Time to earn my keep.

FAMILY

We had a baby shower this weekend. Lot’s of family and friends showed up. We received many helpful gifts. The shower itself was really nice and the food was fantastic.

I did my typical anti-social thing. I really don’t know why but I’m getting worse about hanging around people. When my brother and his wife Deborah showed up, I  spent my time with them, but that was mainly because they came over and sat down where I was at (and also asked to play a game with me). After talking for an hour or so, I took out two board games that I had brought and played it.  I’ll write about that another day.  I enjoyed myself.  They left early and I sat by myself thinking about stories and my next project.  A few people came by, sat down and talked to me for a few minutes but it wasn’t long before I was alone again thinking.

Later, Angelita, one of my cousin’s daughters, asked me if I wanted to play the board game TROUBLE (it’s that, LUDO/SORRY type game with the “Pop-O-Matic Bubble” that rolls the die for you). There where four of us playing, my three year old daughter was one and my two year old son was another.  My son lost interest quickly and Carolina (my cousin’s eldest daughter) took his place.

That game is awful. It’s such a bad game. We all thought so. You can’t leave the your “Home” base and start moving your pieces around the board unless roll a six.  Which you have no control over and if you manage to do so, if someone lands on your piece, you get that piece sent “Home” again.  It was such a bad game though, that it was actually fun.  We enjoyed making fun of it as we played and didn’t take it seriously at all since it was so luck driven.  I think, the best part about playing the game was that my daughter ended up winning.  She trounced us all.  She rolled so many sixes it was crazy.

Thanks you all for giving us such a good and memorable baby shower.

BOARD GAMES\VIDEO GAMES

I was listening to the Dice Tower Podcast Tuesday and I was made aware of a Carcassonne site that had all kinds of variant rules and printable tiles for the game.  If you like Carcassonne and you want to try new and fun ways to play it, I highly recommend it:

Carcassone Central

Also this site led me to discover a Carcassonne like game for the iPhone with a Sci fi theme that seems really cool called XENO SOLA. It looks cool.

BLOGS

The Art Center Blog is fast becoming one of my favorite art drawing blogs to read.  There are a ton of great tips and drawing advice worth reading about there.

One of the article that I really enjoyed recently has been some videos they’ve put up on the merits of warm up sketching during figure drawing.

I highly recommend the article. To read it, CLICK HERE.

VIDEOS

So before I started back at work, I discovered and got addicted to watching yet another anime cartoon.  This time it’s a series sequel to one of my favorite animes SUPER DIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS (the first part of what was called ROBOTECH in the U.S. which I wrote about show a few weeks back). The sequel I’m now watching is called MACROSS FRONTIER. It aired in Japan in 2008 and has not yet seen a U.S. release.

macross-frontier.jpg

When I became aware of this show, I thought I’d give it a look because I’ve been recently re-watching the original 1980s MACROSS.  I wasn’t really expecting to like it much.  Mostly because I haven’t really gotten into too many anime cartoons in years.  Also, because the last two MACROSS shows I’d seen, didn’t really blow me away either.  Namely, MACROSS 2 (which was pretty bad), MACROSS PLUS Vol. 1-4 (which looked fantastic and were fun to watch but the story didn’t blow me away) and MACROSS 7 (which was a sequel series to the original MACROSS, that was just plain dumb).  This one though, knocked my socks off. It had enough call backs and archetypes from the original MACROSS show to make it feel familiar, but at the same time, they changed things enough so that it’s new. In fact, if you’re familiar with the original show, there is a type of inside joke fake out that they do all the way through the series where you think they’re writing the same story and then turn you’re expectations on their heads.  It’s great.

Besides, I just can’t help watching cool robots fighting aliens. Especially when the robots transform from jets into robots. The effects on the robots and vehicles are mostly CG.

MACROSS is known for one of the female protagonists who ends up becoming a famous pop singer.  This meant the show had a singing component in it that sometimes made it a very lite musical. This version follows the tradition only I actually like the music for once and don’t find it annoying.

I’m also a big sucker for love triangles in my anime (as you can see from my own comic above) and this one has that too.

This is a fun cartoon to watch if you’re a MACROSS fan like me. Best MACROSS since the original. I’m not sure if the show will have the same impact on someone who hasn’t seen the original version but you might enjoy it anyway.  Give it a shot if you can find it online.

Chaotic work week. Alesha started work so we started out carpooling together. Do to the crazy amount of last minute work I need to get done, that soon changed. I had to get all my work on one crew done by Tuesday because I started on a new crew on Wednesday.  I wasn’t told until late Monday.  It wasn’t a very happy situation.

FAMILY

I just thought I’d take the time to say,

“Happy Birthday!” to Eduardito. My cousin’s boy has turned 3 years old, hurray! He had a really fun birthday party Saturday.  I kinda wished we could have stayed a bit longer since Munchkin was just starting to have fun but, Alesha wasn’t feeling well.  Best part of the party was seeing Dante hit the pinata. Very funny.

BOARD GAMES

So I asked Munchkin if she wanted to play a card game with me.  Of course she said, “YES!” So I took out a Memory game.   It’s a Mr. Potato Head Memory card game we got as a McDonalds Happy Meal toy a year or so ago.  I’ve been waiting all this time to be able to play a game with her with these cards.  I tried to do so a few weeks after we had gotten them but she was too little to understand the memory matching.

At first I wanted to test her to see if she would be able to understand what we were suppose to be doing.  I put the cards face down and she flipped one up, then she took turns flipping every card, looking at it, then putting it back down face down until she found the match.  This is how we played the first two times.  I didn’t take any turns.

Then I decided to test her to see if she would play by the “rules” by only allowing her to flip over two cards. If they didn’t match, it was MY turn.  That way, if I flipped over a card she was looking for, I wanted to see if she would remember it.  Also, I wanted to see if she got the idea of taking turns.  I did this with a few cards at first and with every game I added more.  She did fantastic.   We were playing with all the cards in no time. I was amazed.  She even beat me at the game quite a few times, she was really good at it.  I handicapped myself, only a little and unintentionally.  When I would find a match, I wouldn’t take another turn, but when she found a match, she took another turn.  When I tried to take a second turn after I found a match, I found she got impatient and thought it was unfair. She felt I was skipping her turn so I stopped doing it.  Otherwise, we played the game by the rules.

To me, this was the greatest thing ever.  I was FINALLY playing a board game with my daughter.  One that wasn’t mindless.  One with choices. It was as if the clouds had parted and God (looking like the one in the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail) came out of a cloud saying:

Monty Python God blessing my Gaming

So having realized that Munchkin is old enough to play games with me now, I made my way to the local Target store the next day to look for games I might be able to play with her.  I looked at games and found a few but I wasn’t sure if they were any good so I wrote down the names of all the ones I thought looks interesting and went home to look them up on BGG.

None but ONE of the games where any good, and even the one I thought sounded good wasn’t really all that good.  What I was searching for was a game that she could learn to play now, but that would still be challenging as she got older. Though a bit dull, Memory is exactly this type of game.  All you do is add more cards and it gets more difficult. Candyland was right out.  No decisions and too easily outgrown (not to mention I did NOT want to play Candyland).  So I searched online for some games.  These are the games that caught my eye that I think fit the criteria I was looking for:

Kids of Carcassonne:

Yes, that’s right, there is a Carcassonne game for kids and it looks great. I think Munchkin would “get” this one to some extent and she could grow into it.  Check out this review of the game:

Next is…

Gulo Gulo:

This is a dexterity game with a modular board where you play a cute wolverine who takes eggs from the vulture nest in the middle. You do this so you can rescue the baby wolverine that has gotten himself trapped in the nest. Here’s a video review explaining the game:

Finally…

Chicken Cha Cha Cha:

A memory game with also with a modular board. The object of the game is to steal the feathers of the other player’s chickens by jumping over them.  The way you move your chicken forward is by flipping over a card in the center of the board that matches the picture in the square in front of  your chicken.  You continue your turn until you fail to find a match.

Out of  all of these, I think I can make a homemade version of Chicken Cha Cha Cha.  It just won’t be as silly as the chicken theme but we will be able to play it.

I’m thinking of using the Qwirkle tiles to do this.  They work really well to play Memory.  In fact, after I got tired of the Potato Head Memory game I subjected to Munchkin that we use the Qwirkle tiles.  We took out a set of matching pieces, flipped them around, shuffled them up and played a game.  It was much more difficult and still, Munchkin did amazingly well.  She won most of the time and I think I tide her once.  Although I suppose I did let her win sometimes.  Still, she remembered where tiles were or the general area where tiles were.  Sometimes she remembered tiles I hadn’t, and as a bonus, after we were done playing she decided to just play with the tiles.  She like telling me the colors and shapes as well as counting them.

I love being able to play board games with her now.

BLOGS/PODCASTS

I’ve recently been asked by two different bloggers/podcasters if for permission to use my drawings for their posts.  They’ve both used the drawings for very different purposes and I find that kinda neat.

Here a link to both the sites:

St. Mary Catholic Church Podcast – My drawing is used as a compliment to a “sound bite” of a sermon on the Sacrament of Reconciliation (a.k.a. Confession). It’s two minutes long. Check it out.

No More Lives – This a blog (and soon to be podcast) which tries to be, in their own words, “the New Yorker of video games”. In an attempt to bring in a little variety to their content, they’ve gotten a board game geek on board to express a different position. My drawing was used in one such article on their site called Gaming Without Batteries  by Kyle Bolin. Great read.

Our fifth wedding anniversary, Munchkin’s Birthday. Rosaries and Deaths in the family. Raul’s new blog and podcast

August 13, 2009 in BLOGS, BOARD GAMES, BOOKS, FAMILY, PODCASTS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Not much to tell. Just plugging away at the scenes I need to finish.

FAMILY

This weekend was a very eventful one.  It began Friday. Alesha and I celebrated five years of marriage.  Well…we technically didn’t celebrate it until Saturday.  We gave each other presents on Friday.  I got her some “hair goop” that she wanted and a book I thought she would enjoy (Here There be Dragons by James A. Owen). She gave me a board game. A very cool one I wanted. It had won the German Game of the Year this year.  Big honor in the board game community.  It’s called Dominion.

Friday, instead of going out for our anniversary, we ended up NOT spending the day together at all.  I got home and went to a Rosary that was being held at my Cousin Carolina’s house. Alesha was planning to go too but Dante decided he reealllly wanted to go to bed for the night.  We kinda didn’t have a choice.  One of us had to stay home with him so Munchkin and I went to the Rosary together.  Munchkin had a blast playing with her cousin Eduardito.  They played pretty hard.  It looked like an awful lot of work to be playing as hard as they were.  I was very happy to see them enjoying themselves as much as they did.  I was really tired myself.  Problem is, when I’m really tired or stressed or emotional, I tend to want to be by myself.  Being around people and attempting to socialize just about kills every ounce of energy I have.  I spent most of the time playing a video game on my DS while listening to conversations other people around me were having.  I tend to isolate myself so much I don’t really have anything relevant to say to anyone about any subjects people bring up at parties so I end up listening and, by default, learning a few things.

Praying the Rosary in a group is very enjoyable to me.  I always feel happier after it’s over.  It always brings home what’s important in life.

We left at about nine o’clock and of course, Munchkin didn’t want to leave.

Saturday was spent, mostly, with the kids, but we had made arrangements with my mom to take care of the kids at four so Alesha and I could go on a date. Our date was a simple dinner and a movie.  It had been a long time since we had eaten Japanese.  I was desperate for some sushi.  I love that stuff. So we went to a Japanese restaurant near us that has a really good reputation.  It was great.   We had a very enjoyable dinner.  We then went to go see the GI Joe movie.  It was a highly entertaining, ridiculously stupid and silly movie.  We had a fantastic time watching it and we had just as much fun laughing at how cheesy it was afterward. I’d so buy that movie when it comes out on DVD.  It’s that lame and fun.

We then picked up the kids, who were asleep by then, but who had just as good a time with my parents as Alesha and I had on our date. After we put them to bed, we opened up a bottle of the wine we always open on our anniversary and watched The Princess Bride in bed until we fell asleep.  It was a great date night.

The next day was Munchkin’s birthday.   The kids must have had a really tiring day the day before because they didn’t wake up at seven on their own the way they usually do.  By a quarter till eight, they were still asleep  and it didn’t seem like they were going to wake up anytime soon. I woke Munchkin up and told her it was her birthday. She acted as though the whole idea was surreal to her. She was given a special birthday breakfast of pancakes with sprinkle on it.  Afterward we all got ready for church.  Alesha and I made the huge mistake of going to a ten o’clock Mass with the kids.  It was a mistake because that was Dante’s nap time.  He was sleepy and cried pretty much the whole time.  Alesha missed most of the Mass because she had to take him out the church. When we got back we put both kids down for a nap.  They had both fallen asleep in the car.

I took this time to go get Munchkin a present.  I had an idea of what I wanted to get her but the store that had what I wanted was closed. I ended up getting her something else. Alesha was desperate for me to get back home.  Dante had woken up crying and there was no consoling him.  I had to stop and get some things Alesha wanted at the store and then I hurried home as fast as I could.  We needed to get to my parents as soon as possible so Alesha could help my mom with the food.  Dante cried the whole way.   We suspect that, since he is teething, it had to do with that.  We had given him something for the pain but it didn’t stop him from crying. He had been crying for about an hour and half when we pulled up to my parent’s house. Then, when Dante saw my dad, he stopped.  We’re still not sure what it was all about.

Munchkin had a blast at her party.  She played with her cousins and had a great time. She opened presents and got lots of nice gifts.  The last gift she got was a plastic princess crown and jewelry.  The party ended around eight.  We really needed to leave so the kids could be put to bed. They had to wake up early to go to daycare the next day.

FAMILY

My cousin Tony passed away early Monday morning. He had neuro muscular dystrophy. I want to write more but I can’t…except to say that my one regret is that I wish I would have spent some time with him while he was still alive…but was too much of a coward to do so. I spent no time with him at all, either healthy or sick. Please pray for him and the family. Especially his widow.

BLOGS/PODCASTS

Raul has decided to go multimedia. He now has a blog and a podcast.  You can find them at: http://manvsart.com/. He’s got two episodes up. An intro episode and a second episode.  The second one is darn entertaining and he made me laugh.  Go check it out.

Paul and Comic Con. Played Tichu with my parents. Munchkin’s reaction to my cartoons. RpgGeek is up

August 6, 2009 in BOARD GAMES, FAMILY, ROLE PLAYING GAMES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I was taken off the crew I was on and put on yet another crew.  I was told at lunch about it Tuesday.  I don’t really mind though. Especially since the scenes I’m working on involve BOARD GAMES. Woo Hoo!

In other news…Paul finally got his sketchbook out:

Paul’s Sketchbook Cover

Most of the people in that crowd are based on real geeks Paul know or took pictures of. I’m in the back cover.

The sketchbook is great.  If you want to buy a copy you can order one from STUART NG BOOKS. He printed it for Comic Con and sold it there. He told me one of the people that bought a copy was none other than Disney Animator Glen Keane. Glen Keane was the head animator on such Disney characters as Ariel, The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Tarzan, and Long John Silver. He told Paul that it was his first time at Comic Con and that Paul‘s sketchbook and Ronnie Del Carmen‘s sketchbook were the only things he had bought at the Con. Paul was very honored.

He also told me that, since he was a Dealer, he was able to walk around the show floor before it officially opened.  As he walked by a booth and saw a bunch of pictures of Edward James Olmos on a table.

“Oh wow, Edward James Olmos.” He turned to the guy in the booth, “Is he here?”.  The guy in the booth didn’t say a word, he merely pointed next to were Paul was standing.  He turned his head only to come face to face with Mr. Olmos himself.  Paul nearly jumped out of his skin and stood dumbfounded not able to speak.  After a few moments he was able recover and asked Mr. Olmos for an autograph, shook his hand and got a picture taken with him.  Paul is a huge Battlestar Galactica fan.  Later on during the Con he got to meet other cast members, such as James Callis.

Sounds like the had a fun time.

Oh…and I also heard from from him and quite a few of my co-workers that they saw Leonard Nimoy  walking around the show floor, enjoying the chaos.

BOARD GAMES

I invited my parents over Saturday for a game night.  I definitely took out “family games” this time around, or at least I thought they were all family games. Something fun and lite with a little bit of strategy.  To this end, I brought out Ticket to Ride: Europe, Modern Art , Vegas Showdown, and Tichu . I would have brought out Ingenious but I wasn’t in the mood to play that game.

I asked everyone what they wanted to play after I explained the gist of how  each game played.  My mom wanted to play Tichu so that’s what we played.  It was the first time I’d ever played it.  I wasn’t sure what to expect but it didn’t really seem too complicated when I read the rules.  Then we started playing it. Woah, for such a simple game it sure forces you to make difficult decisions from the get go. Everyone was a bit overwhelmed by how deep the game was.

It’s a bit of a partnership trick taking game. You win a trick by trying to put down higher combos of cards than the other players on the table. Thing is, there is some really nice nuances in the game that dictate when you WANT to win the trick,  when it’s a good time to play certain cards and when you want to be the first player to play all your cards. We all had a good time but, man, it was really shocking to discover how deep the game was.  I recommend it.

FAMILY

So Munchkin was on my lap this weekend as I looked some stuff up on my computer.  She notice my Avatar in one of my file folders so I clicked on it so she could take a better look.  My Avatar animates so she likes it.  It isn’t the first time she’s seen it and often asks me if she could see the “funny face”. This time though it suddenly dawned on her that the avatar was suppose to be me and she sat up, pointed at it and exclaimed:

funny-daddy.jpg

She started laughing, “That’s a very funny daddy”.  Now she calls it, “funny daddy”.  I showed her the other drawings on my blog and she thought they were very funny too. It still hasn’t dawned on her that the little girl in all those blog drawings is her. I tried to tell her but she didn’t get it. She’ll figure it out eventually.

ROLE PLAYING GAMES

I write a lot about the Board Game Geek Website (BGG).  It’s a fantastic resource for discovering every kind of tactile game you can play with friends and family.  Well, the creator of  BGG, Scott Alden (Aldie),  has decided that he was going to branch out to other types of games.  To that end he has created Geek DÓ, the brand under which, BGG will now reside.  His newest Geek game site is Role Playing Game Geek (RPGG).  It’s just like BGG for table top role playing games, only a tad bit more complicated.  Mostly because of the subcategories that many table top role playing games need to be placed under.  For example, Dungeons and Dragons, alone, has four editions and each edition has tons of books under it.

It’s a fantastic site and a much needed site.  It’s a pain to try to find info on many role playing games.  Up until know when I wanted to read a review for an rpg I went to Rpg.net, but I’ve never really liked that site.  It’s very clunky and difficult to find things in, and the colors  on the site are a  bit off putting .  Now with RPGG it’s going to be so much easier and it’s a nicer brighter atmosphere.  I’ve already started helping out the data base by putting up pictures and things for the site.  There are a few thousand role playing games up on the site already and it’s growing by the minute.  It’s fantastic, it was love at first site (pause for the “boos”) .  I’ve already started to make a wish list and uploading all the games I own.

If you’re a gamer but aren’t a board gamer or an rpger, don’t worry. The next Geek database site Aldie is going to work on, will be Video Game Geek. You will soon be assimilated.

Might be burning out. Birthday get together. Magic: The Gathering game with Alesha

July 30, 2009 in BOARD GAMES, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

So I started work on a new crew last week.  I was helping out on another crew for about a week and a half.  The crew I’m on now is my next “official” crew.  Problem is, I think I should have taken it a little easier when helping out on the last crew because I’m really feeling burned out right now.  It doesn’t help that the art on the act we are starting on is really rough.  This means we pretty much have to  re-draw the whole act.  Our job is basically to “plus” the board. In other words, we add and finesse the acting, as well as make any big corrections the need to be done in order to make the story reel play well and be clear.  When we get a board that is so rough that we can’t use any of the original drawings, it slows us down to a crawl because it means, not only do we need to work on any revisions and add the extra drawing to scenes that need it, but we also need to go and re-draw the scenes that don’t need anything done to them as well.  We still have three more acts to get to after where done with the one we’re working on.  There is only three of us on the crew, we only get three weeks and we are NOT allowed overtime. I hope we don’t get too bogged down on this act so that we can get to the others. More importunately, I hope I don’t go into complete burn out so that I’m not completely useless.

FAMILY

We had to wait till this weekend to get the family together for my dad’s birthday.  We had a good time.  The kids had an especially good time.  Munchkin was having so much fun that when it was time to go, (at 10:00 pm) she didn’t want to leave.  She was really upset and didn’t even fall asleep on the way home.

We saw little Paulo and he’s sooo big now.  He likes to bounce so Deborah and Juan bought him a jumper.  He loves it.  It’s very funny to see him bouncing. We all had a good time.

BOARDGAMES

Things got a bit more interesting in Andy’s life, so he can’t come over to play with me on Fridays.  This kinda leaves me without a game night, which is really depressing.  Seeing that I had no one to play with anymore, Alesha decided to offer to play with me last Friday. We actually had a fantastic time.

We first played Lost Cities, mainly because I think it’s one of Alesha’s favorite games to play against me.  She wins every game we play. Having lost yet another game of Lost Cities against her, she let me choose the next game. I chose to play Magic: The Gathering. I had bought a Duel Deck box a while back. It contained two decks that where constructed to be played against one another.  The theme of the Decks where Divine versus Demonic.  Alesha took the Divine deck, which consisted of Angels, Paladins, clerics and a bunch of healing magic. This left me with the Demonic deck which consisted of demons, imps, fallen angels, and lots of life sucking, mean things.  I lost all three games we played.

The first game we played, I let Alesha win.  I got a ton a really good cards and I had spells in my hand that I could have activated in such a way that they would have given me an instant win. I chose NOT to play them.  I wanted Alesha to have a good time.  I also had an advantage since I know how to play the game while she was still trying to get used to it.  I wanted her to read her cards, get acquainted with them, remember the rules and generally enjoy the way the game played. In the end, she managed to win the first game while a had a hand of “killer” cards that would have won me the game easily.  In fact, I was so confident that my deck was better than her’s that I offered to switch decks with her after the game was over.  She refused.  She wanted to stick with her deck.

Turns out the first game we had played had been a lucky draw on my part. By the time the next game started not only was Alesha familiar with her deck and how it worked, but I had gotten a very crummy draw.  I just couldn’t get the cards I needed while Alesha just kept getting some really good cards.  Alesha suddenly began learning how to combine her cards to get their full effects. I had been planning to win that game.  I could barely keep my life points up.  The game was over fairly quick. Alesha had learned her deck fairly well by the time that game ended.  I was irked and wanted a rematch.  I had just gotten a bad draw that game.  I wanted to at least win one game.  So we played one more time.

I thought I had it in the bag the third game. I had gotten a pretty darn good draw.  It started off really good for me and I was playing the game to the best of my ability, no more letting her win. I had some mean little imps that where doing damage to her every turn. Then Alesha cast some nasty spells on my creatures and my game went down the tubes. I managed to stop her from summoning a powerful Angel but it didn’t do me much good. Specially since the rest of my guys had been enchanted by Alesha and she kept getting life back when she cast spells.  Meanwhile she smacked me upside the head with her Paladin who rode down the field  on a fancy white horse in armor.  She was playing Magic like she’d been doing it for years. Then she drew her best card out of her deck and the game was pretty much over.  With two points left, I also drew “my best card” which wasn’t really all that great because (since it was horrible demon) it would hurt me for 7 points of damage if I didn’t sacrifice a creature to it every turn.  I didn’t have anyone to sacrifice so I was going to lose no matter what.
Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic famous card

I think Alesha enjoyed trouncing me way too much.   I want a rematch, I KNOW I can win at least ONE game.

Uncle Chestnut. Trying out our Squirmish Wars rule variants.

July 2, 2009 in BOARD GAMES, BOOKS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Not much new to report.  Had some very complicated scenes to do that really slowed me down. I don’t feel I’m pulling my weight this time around.  Hopefully, by the end of today, I would have gotten enough done to feel better about it all.

BOOKS

My G.K. Chesterton drawing, from a few posts back, got the attention of a much bigger Chesterton fan, Paul Nowak. As well as being a Chesterton enthusiast (and who isn’t, once you start reading his works?) he is also the author of three books, a freelance writer, a fellow board game enthusiast, a philosopher, Christian Apologist and he runs a darn good website. He was good enough to send me two of the books he wrote. Both of which are right up my alley: The Way of the Christian Samurai: Reflections for Servant-Warriors of Christ
and The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut.
I’m a fan of G.K. Chesterton. Some of Chesterton‘s books that I’ve read include: Heretics, Orthodoxy, The Man Who Was Thursday, The Everlasting Man, some of his Father Brown Mysteries, and some of his essays from What’s wrong with the world. I highly recommend all of these works.

I read The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut this weekend.  It’s really great.  It’s geared for kids and the stories are really fun.  They’re inspired by some of the writings, thoughts, and real life experiences Chesterton wrote about in this books and articles, as well as some of his biographies.  I found the stories to ring very true to the spirit of Chesterton’s writings. As I read this book, my brain was playing out the stories as if they were animated cartoons.  I’ve always thought Chesterton was a great living cartoon, but reading this book really proved it to me. The book is a great way to introduce Chesterton to kids and even to parents, if they don’t know anything about Chesterton. It’s also a great tribute to the man. It captures that lovable thing about Chesterton that makes you keep coming back for more.

If you want to know more about Chesterton you can learn more about him by going to Paul Nowak’s site.

The other book,  The Way of the Christian Samurai, I haven’t read yet, but I started to.  I really can’t believe no one had ever thought to write about this subject before.   I’m a big fan of the “mythology” of the Samurai.  I’m a fan of Samurai movies (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Lone Wolf and Cub, Lady Snow Blood, etc…) as well as some Samurai literature and Manga (Japanese comics). Though I know that the reality of the Samurai may not have been as glamorized as the mythologized figures they have become, the mythology of the Samurai is something quite fantastic and awesome.  Paul Nowak has taken the Samurai’s code of Bushido and it’s examples and plugged it into Christianity. Suddenly you have two great tastes that taste great together.  Holy Cow!  They fit together so well!  The small taste I got from the small part of the book that I’ve read so far has got me drooling.  As an artist, my imagination is going crazy over the imagery of a Christian Samurai. Urge to draw…rising…

Get these books!

BOARD GAMES

So Andy and I tried out playing Skirmish Wars: Advance Tactics (SWAT) with the new variant end game rules we borrowed from other games.  We also tried out some  random map placement  rules that add a small “fog of war” aspect to the game.

Photo from www.boardgamegeek.com

First, the end game rules we used where borrowed from two games. (1) We borrowed the HeroScape rules of ending the game after a certain amount of turns, if the other official end game conditions were not met.  This way, we tried to cut down the play time and keep it to about an hour to an hour and a half.  We failed.  At first we picked 20 turns but it was too long. Once we had hit turn 5 we realized we needed to cut the turns down so we decided to end the game on turn 10.  It took us about 2 hours to play the game. (2) The next rule we borrowed was from the game Manoeuvre.  Turns out  SWAT and Manoeuvre have many things in common.  I don’t own Manoeuvre but I do have the rules for the game on pdf.  From those rules, I borrowed the “controlling enemy territory” victory point conditions, from the game. It worked great and it was a great motivator to not turtle in the game.

Second, the rules for map tile placement, we borrowed from Dungeon Twister. We placed map tiles face down, took turns putting face down buildings and terrain as we set the game up, and as we played the game, (as in Dungeon Twister) we revealed the upside down map tiles and placed the buildings and terrain we had originally place face down on that map tile. We also gave the Recon unit special powers   just to add to the theme and to try to keep the game playing like the video game.  It worked great. If there is one thing I would change, it would be that the placement of buildings when revealed by one player, would be done by the opposing player.  As it was, because we didn’t do that.  The person who got lucky enough to reveal map tiles that had buildings close to their home base, namely me, had a very unfair advantage since I was able to place the buildings near me and therefore ended up with tons of money, which won me the game. Had we done it the other way, the game would have been a much closer match.

Most of our additions really helped make the game even more enjoyable.  Not sure if we’re going to play the game this Friday.  I think Andy got disappointed that I won again.  We might play a game of  Dreamblade.  We’ll see.  It will also depend on how many players we’ll have since I’ve invited another friend of mine over to play with us.

The new way we do the shows. Munchkin helps me wash dishes. Another Squirmish Wars game

June 18, 2009 in BOARD GAMES, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS

Monday and Tuesday was crazy deadline days. It was all about scrambling to get out work done.  On Thursday night, of last week, there was a story reel screening of the show in it current unfinished state (which was about 80% done).  From that, we got a lot of notes of things to fix.

Our new process, (which I’ve yet to explain) is this: The show has been split up into two different crews. The first crew comes on first. It’s a story reel crew made up of three artists,  the Director and the Assistant Director (A.D.). The second crew, that comes on after the story reel is finished, is made up about five completely different people, the same Director and the same A.D., who do the traditional Character layouts that we’ve done for years. This crew gets eight weeks to finish the show and get it ready for shipping.

I am a story reel artist. Our job is to make a story reel to show the writers and producers. The story reel is meant to be a slightly plused up moving storyboard. The idea is to show the writers and producers how a show “plays” (how a show is working) so that if there’s  big changes, there won’t be a lot of effort lost.

The idea is sound. It’s very similar to the process we had in the movie, BUT (there’s always a “but”) there are some small difficulties.

One is that, not all the boards we work off of are of the same quality. Some are great and we could do our job of plussing the board. Others are so rough and sometimes aren’t even “playing” clearly, that we have to re-draw everything before we can even begin plussing anything up. We haven’t got the time for those issues.  The last show I worked on, there was a section in my board that was in such bad shape, I had to come up with shots and re-work the board for almost two of my three weeks, just to get the board to “play” right.  When I asked the director how he wanted me to fix it, he told me, “I don’t know. Come up with something and then show it to me.” On the one hand, that was great because he was trusting me so much and that gave me a lot of freedom to “save” the sequences.  On the other hand. I had a ton of other scenes to get to and didn’t have the time to be fixing things like that.

The second difficulty that we’ve run into is that, in practice, the producers and writers, expect the story reel to look as clean and solid as an animatic.  Which is impossible since an animatic is was done by at least five to seven artist in about five to six weeks, not three artist in three weeks.  This always puts us in the dilemma of second guessing ourselves about how clean ans pretty we’re suppose to be working.  The cleaner and prettier, the more time it takes to draw. Time we don’t have.

The third difficulty is, no overtime.  We get done in the time we are given or not at all.  No staying late. The pressure is crazy.

There are a few more but I don’t want to keep complaining.  It’s not all bad.  There are a quite a few things I really LOVE about he process. We get a lot of freedom to put in our input as to how things should “play out” in the show.  It puts all the artist on the story reel crew in the position of an A.D.. We’re basically in charge of directing out section.  I like that.  It’s a very creative thing.  Especially since what we finish doesn’t even go directly to the Director but goes straight to the editor.  Everyday we get to see the work in progress on the reel and see how the shots we finished the day before works in the context of the show.  This means that often  we can make slight changes the next day if we feel like the shot of shots we did aren’t “playing” well. It’s pretty cool.  The Director also has a lot more control of the final product because he has a meeting with the editor every evening, sees what working what’s not and can change things on the spot or make a note of the things he would like an artist to add or change the next day.  By the end of the process, the story reel is more in line with the Director’s vision than any animatic had ever been. Personally, I like the process. It feels far more collaborative.  It’s just too bad we get practically no time to do our thing.

FAMILY

Munchkin always wants to help me do things.  She sees me doing something like cooking or doing the laundry and she wants to join in.  She’s at an age when she wants to try out new things.  Well, she saw that I was going to start washing the dishes this weekend and she decided she wanted to help me out.  I let her.  I went and got her step ladder and she proceeded to rinse out the dishes with me and handed me the ones she rinsed while I put them in the dishwasher.  Surprisingly, it was very helpful.  Usually when she “helps” me, it whatever we’re doing takes much longer to do because she’s just a little kid and can barely manage  what she needs to do, but not this time.  I took car of the knives, pots, and dishes that had very stuck on food, while Munchkin took care of most everything else.  She did very well. In fact, she did SO well that the next day I asked her to help me wash the dishes we weren’t able to get to the day before.

I doubt her interest in washing dishes is going to last long but I might as well take advantage while she still wants to do it.

BOARD GAMES

Played  Skirmish Wars: Advance Tactics again with Andy last Friday. We had a blast.  The game is just so good.  The only problem with it, is that it takes too long to play.  It’s fine when your playing the video game because you can save it but when your head to head at a table, it’s a bit too much. In order to try and speed the game up, this time, we  tried out the whole, “first person to capture so many units wins” rule, made popular by the Command and Colors games. It didn’t work out as well as I had hoped.  It still made the game long and it almost caused a stalemate because there was a point during the game that neither Andy or I wanted to move, in case we lost a unit.  In the end, we decided that next time, we would borrow a rule from Heroscape and play a specific amount of agreed upon turns. After those turns are over, we would then count “victory point” according to a predetermined group of parameters. We’ll see if the game plays faster that way.

Munchkin gets a bike. Played the Advanced Wars board game. Magic the Gather coming for the Xbox 360.

June 11, 2009 in BOARD GAMES, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEO GAMES

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I’m slowly making my way through the scenes I need to get done for the show. There were a few last minute scenes I needed to do yesterday but for the most part, I’m making good progress.

FAMILY

Saturday I took the kids out with me to the board game store.  At the store, they made a bee line for some rubber ducks that were out on display for the game duck! duck! Go!. When the kids are older (6 and up), I so want to get this game for them.

I’d totally go for the Justice League rubber ducks.

It looks like a lot of fun.

I also saw the game Pitch Car (which I want to get) but it’s a bit too pricey right now at  $80.00.  I heard it’s great.

A game about flicking “race cars” around a track.

I saw lots of other games I wanted to pick up (but didn’t).  The kids had a good time looking at the games.  Almost as much fun as I did.

When we left and went back home, we dropped off Dante for his afternoon nap and left for the local pet store.  Munchkin had a fantastic time looking at all the animals.  Her favorites where the fish and the birds.  I liked the hamsters and the rats but I know better than to own any of those (I used to have some when I was younger).  I can’t take it when they die.  I get too attached.

On Sunday we all went to Mass together. This basically meant that I payed absolutely no attention to the Mass what so ever, even though the kids where relatively well behaved, mainly because they kept me distracted the whole time as I tried to get them to not cause trouble. After we got home and the kids took a nap, we went out again and went to the mall (just so we had something to do). We wandered around, had some ice cream and Alesha bought a thing or two.

One thing caught Munchkin’s eye. A bike, just her size.  She sat on it and wanted to peddle it out the store.  I liked the way she looked in it and I wanted her to have it so we got it for her on the way back out of the mall.  After all, it was only 30 bucks.  Less than the prize of a video game.

Monday she rode on it.  The bike is really kinda crummy.  If you stop pedaling the bike stops.  Kinda like a tricycle.  Unfortunately Munchkin discovered that she has absolutely no strength in her legs.  She was having a really difficult time trying to get the bike to move.  Most of the time I had to help her by giving her a push.

On that same day, Dante built up the nerve to slide down the slide at the playground by himself.  He climbed up the steps by himself and once he got to the top, he would turn around and go down the slide, feet first, on his belly.  It was really funny to see.  He was very proud of himself and loved doing it.  He spent all his time doing it over and over.

BOARD GAMES

So we ended up playing the Advance Wars board game (aka. Skirmish Wars: Advance Tactics), I printed out, with Andy last  Friday.  It was fantastic!  It works really well.  The game plays a bit long so you we ended up borrowing the end game rules from the Command and Colors games (games like BattleLore) in order to have the game end faster.  Andy ended up winning because of a blunder I made.  Otherwise things were looking pretty bleak for him.  The game has almost no luck at all. It plays very much like a game in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem only every “Figure” represents a unit of troops. Also, you are able to capture buildings in the game in order to get more money at the beginning of your turn which enables you to pay for more expensive more powerful units.  The only luck in the game is a dice you roll you make in order to see if you do an extra point of damage during an attack, otherwise the damage you will do to your opponent is a known quantity.  If really fun.  I highly recommend it and you really can beat the price, free.

VIDEO GAMES

I’ve written about Magic: The Gathering before, but now, if you own an Xbox 360 you will be able to play the game without having to buy any cards.  The game is coming out  for  Xbox LIVE Arcade on June 17th for 800 MS points.  It seems like it’s going to play fairly well.  The only thing I thought was kinda odd is that you won’t be able to buy “booster packs” in the game in order to customize your deck.  It will only let you unlock one card at a time as you win matches. That’s the only way you will be able to customize your deck. Otherwise, you only get pre-constructed decks to play the game with.  That said, I think the game sounds fun.  After I read about the game, I actually considered maybe getting an Xbox 360 for the first time.  I doubt I could afford to buy one even if I wanted one though.
