If Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman Were Catholic Saints…

March 13, 2014 in CATHOLICISM, SUPERHEROES

SUPERHEROES/CATHOLICISM – If Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman Were Catholic Saints…

If Super heroes were Catholic SaintsSuperheroes inspire a lot of people to go out and be good people. They often embody the ideal virtues and morals, and overcome obstacles for the greater good of others.  But before superheroes, the western world used to read about and was inspired by another group of people who’s stories had a similar function, namely, Catholic Saints.

How the Comics are Great Podcast Got me Thinking

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. It started after listening to an episode of the Comic are Great podcast called: Give Your Heroes a Reason to Quit with Ben Hatke

Podcast host Jerzy Drozd and  guest Ben Hatke, spoke about heroes in comics in the same way that informed Catholics speak about Saints. And Jerzy, who absolutely LOVES the 80s He-Man cartoons, uses the unintentional Christian morality play that those cartoons are, as part of the basis for his moral outlook.

I find this fascinating but it’s not unusual.

Documentaries like Legend of the Knight, show how people have taken a characters like Batman and have done the same thing that Jerzy does with He-Man.

What strikes me about these things is that, as a Catholic, I do the same thing but not with Superheroes.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Superheroes, but my moral compass and the examples of good morally heroic living are not them, but Christ and His Saints.  In fact, I go so far as to judge the moral virtues and faults of Superheroes next to Christ and His Saints to see if they are indeed good moral examples in the first place.

Saints, History or Legends?

Now many stories of Catholic Saints are almost as fictitious as Superhero comics.  They are only legends.

For example, just about everything we know about St. George is a legend.  The only  thing we can say is factual about him is that he was a…

“Martyr…who suffered at or near Lydda, also know as Diospolis, in Palestine, probably before the time of Constantine.“

Everything else about him seems to be legend.

Yet, there are other Saints who we know a lot about and whose stories are NOT “just legend” but history. Though many people wouldn’t believe it, some of these people (but by no means all)  showed signs of God given “super powers,” a.k.a. charisms or Charistmata.in Catholic terminology.

Superhero Archetypes vs. “Saint Archetypes”

Once upon a time, in the western world, people would read the stories of these Saints and get inspired by them.  ESPECIALLY since they were historical figures. They would read about their heroic virtuous lives, and think, “If they can do it, so can I,” and follow in their footsteps.

For example, St. Ignatius of Layola, founder of The Society of Jesus (a.k.a. The Jesuits) himself became a Saint this way.

All this thinking lead me to wonder, if superheroes have replaced Saints as inspiration, are there any similarities between some Superheroes and some Saints?  Are some Superheroes, archetypes of  Saints?

I was surprised to find out the answer is mostly no.

I decided not to count the legendary Saint stories and only stick to the historical ones (I’m counting biblical stories as historical even though there are some poetic liberties in them). When I did that, I discovered,  that there are no “Saint Archetype” in the same way that there are Superhero archetypes.

Or perhaps I should say, the Saint Archetypes are very different and more diverse than superhero archetypes.

Fortunately I DID find that there are SOME Saints that shared similarities to some Superheroes.  Which brings me, finally, to the point of this article.

Which Superhero Resembles Which Saint?

If superheroes where Catholic Saints, which ones would they be? Which Saint do some superheroes most resemble?

I came up with about eleven.  Here are only three.  Mostly because it took me a long time to draw these pictures.

Here’s the first three from the list, with an explanation of why they resemble each other:

Superman/St. Micheal the Archangel

Superman and St Michael

Superman, strange visitor from another planet, who fights a never ending battle for truth and Justice.

St. Michael, mysterious being from the metaphysical world, who fights evil in all it’s forms for He who IS Truth, Justice, Love and being itself.

Superman and St. Michael both are “Princes” or leaders of their respective groups. Both of them fly and fight to save human kind from those who would do us harm.

They are both paragons of virtue and embodiments of what it is to fight for good.

Both are symbols of hope. Superman, with his optimism and heroic moral virtue fighting the worst of the worst. St. Michael because he is the one who will defeat the dragon and his angels at the end of time as he did  at it’s beginning (Rev. 12: 7-9).

Superman fights super powered  bad guys. St. Michael literally fights against Satan and all his works.

Superman is a  good example of goodness and  saves people from death. St. Michael  rescues “the souls of the faithful from the power of the enemy, especially at the hour of death.” – New Advent: Catholic Encyclopedia

Superman is the champion of and defender of the Earth and it’s inhabitants. St. Michael is  “the champion of God’s people, the Jews in the Old Law, the Christians in the New Testament; therefore he was the patron of the Church, and of the orders of knights during the Middle Ages.” – New Advent: Catholic Encyclopedia

Superman tends to send the villains he fights to a places where they can be judged and imprisoned. St. Michael calls “away from earth and bring men’s souls to judgment.” – New Advent: Catholic Encyclopedia

If Superman was a Catholic Saint, he would be St. Michael the Archangel.

Batman/St. Martin of Tours

Batman and St Martin of Tours

Batman, loner and crusader of justice.

St. Martin of Tours, hermit and bishop who stood up against injustice.

This comparison is a tad less elegant than the one above.

Batman fights bad guys but doesn’t kill.  St. Martin started his career as a Centurion who, after his conversion, refused to take a life.

Bruce Wayne traveled the world to learn the skills he needed to become Batman. After being discharged from the army, St. Martin traveled, seeking to learn from St. Hilary, how to be a better Christian.

Batman fights in a city where truth and justice are corrupt. He often comes home bruised, scarred, and injured from his adventures. St. Martin opposed the Arian heretics who taught a false Christianity through out Illyricum distorting the truth of orthodox Christianity. He opposed them with such zeal, he was publicly scourged.

Batman prefers to work alone and has a secret headquarters called the “Batcave”. St. Martin preferred to be a hermit. He had several “Martincaves,” of sorts. One on  the island of Gallinaria in the Gulf of Genoa, one on a piece of land, now called Liguge, and one in a desert, enclosed by a steep cliff and tributary on the other at Marmoutier.

Batman has a “batsignal” which is lit when he’s most needed.  He helps those who most need him.  St. Martin was on call by all those who needed him.  And helped all those he could in many parts of his world.

Batman begrudgingly became part of the Justice League.  He prefers to work alone or with a very small team. St. Martin refuses to be a Bishop of the town of Tours. He was tricked into it by having someone tell him his wife was dying and they needed his help, only to  find out it was a lie. The town was waiting for him to declare him Bishop.

Batman’s example has lead other heroes to imitate him, such as Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Batwing, and Huntress to name a few.  St. Martin’s example lead others to imitate him.  He established monasteries full of followers in all the places he settled at.

Batman does what he does to prevent the type of injustice that lead to his parent’s tragic death to happen to anyone else. Near the end of his life, St. Martin defended the lives of some Spanish Priscillianist heretics, who were threatened with bloody persecution, presumably out of both Christian mercy and because he’d been in a similar spot himself once.

If Batman was a Catholic Saint, he’d most like have been St. Martin of Tours

Wonder Woman/St. Joan of Arc

Wonder Woman and St Joan of Arc

Wonder Woman, super powered Amazon warrior from the island of Themyscira.

St. Joan of Arc, mystic warrior woman of France.

Wonder Woman is known for her compassion for the down trodden.  St. Joan was known for her compassion for the poor.

Wonder Woman is an icon and symbol of the strength women possess.  St. Joan IS the actual example of this very thing.

In many stories, Wonder Woman had to prove herself in the eyes of those who saw her as “just a woman.” St. Joan had to prove that her help and what she said was true to everyone she was trying to help.

Wonder Woman is an example of feminine virtue. St. Joan, The Maid, truly was virtuous in every way.  Not only a great example for women but a great example of strength and virtue for men as well.

Wonder Woman has an origin full of the mysticism of Greek Myth.  St. Joan’s journey began through her supernatural experience.

Wonder Woman has some powerful and cool looking armor which she wears over her regular costume when she goes to war.  St. Joan donned armor when she went into battle.

Wonder Woman fought in wars.  St. Joan did as well.

If Wonder Woman was a Catholic Saint, she’d be Joan of Arc.

There’s More

That’s all I’ve got for now.  Like I wrote above, I came up with a list of eleven comparisons but the drawing above take a long time to do.

I might do another batch of comparisons at a later date.

I will say that I’ve found a match of the 80s He-Man and it’s just PERFECT.  I may just do that one as a one off just for Jerzy.

What do you think?  Can you come up with some good matches, or better matches? Sound off on the comments below.

The Four Reasons Having More Than Three Kids is Perfectly Cool.

December 26, 2013 in CATHOLICISM, FAMILY

FAMILY – The Four Reasons Having More Than Three Kids is Perfectly Cool.

The Four Reasons Having More Than Three Kids is Perfectly CoolI’m taking a break this week from the nerdy posts.  I wanted to write a little bit about what happened to our family last week.

I worked really late just about every day last week and the week before to make up the hours I would be gone from work. It was pretty exhausting and I was burned out by the time I was done.

Why did I do this? I became I’m a dad again.

Giovanni Ignatius Escobar was born around 8:15 am on Dec 18th 2013. He was our tiniest kid to date at 5 pounds 8 ounces.  He’s our fifth kid. Our fourth boy.

Yes, we have a lot of kids, but what do you expect? I’m Catholic. Well, at least, this SHOULD be expected from Catholics but sadly, this is  not really the case anymore.

Most Catholics just want to have one or two kids and that’s it.  It’s because this is what our culture deems “normal.”  Three kids is still acceptable, but four is considered crazy and anything beyond that is sheer lunacy.

Don’t we know that the world is over populated and people all over the world are starving because of it?

Well, I don’t see what poor food distribution and the greed that caused it has anything to do with over population.  And in many European countries births rates are pretty low so…

Besides the over population problem is mostly an issue in major world cities, there’s plenty of space in towns outside major cities. If everyone would spread out a bit, it wouldn’t be such a problem.

But I’m no expert.  All I know is that the moment people find out how many kids I have they freak out.  They look at me like some sort of weirdo.

They treat me like I’ve insulted them. They get angry at me or mock me. They say thing like, “You’re the one with the billion kids right? How many kids do you have now 50? Your going to stop now right?”

It starts getting old after hearing stuff like this from EVERYONE. It’s down right hostile.

There’s nothing wrong with having this many kids. So I thought I’d make a list of the reasons why it’s totally cool to have more than three kids:

1. It’s More Difficult to Have One or Two Kids Than it is to Have Four or More.

This might sound odd. It’s especially unintuitive if you’ve only had one kid.  One kid is SO much work, how is it possible that having more than three is easier? That’s crazy talk!

Well, actually it’s not. Having kids is like any other job.  When you first start out it’s overwhelming and it’s a lot of work. But as you get better at your job, it’s becomes a bit easier.  The more you do it, the more acclimated to the work you become. The more of an expert you become.

In other words, it gets easier. On top of the that, you’re not your kid’s only friend.  Once there are two or more, suddenly the kids have other playmates.  They have plenty more to do, and they often need you less.

As the kids get older, they can even help with the younger kids.

2. Everything Worth Having Requires Work

Funny how we are so willing to work  for a bit of money, or work to buy a car, or a house. Even spend time, energy and money to get the career we want,  build the business we want, get the skills we want, or the titles, trophies, medals  or championships we want. We work on our relationships and our marriage when we truly want them to last.

Anything we value, we are willing to work for. Yet when it comes to having kids, what does it say about us when our reaction to having more than a certain amount is,

“Man, that many kids it is too much work!”

It’s not the kids, it’s our mindset.  The work is worth it. The joy you can bring the kids under your care, is worth it. This is work worth doing, we simply don’t value it enough.

3. It Forces You to Be Selfless

Let’s face it. This is the big one.  This is really the reason we don’t have more kids.  It requires an amount of self giving we are NOT willing to do.

We have to stop thinking simply about what we want and we have to sacrifice some of our more selfish desires for the sake of someone else.

The very idea terrifies us. I get it.  But it’s not the end of the world. Getting rid of the selfishness actually brings wisdom.  It makes you a more loving and giving person.

We ought not be afraid of becoming better people.

4. Love Doesn’t Diminish, it Spreads

You simply can’t help loving your kids to bits.  If you show it, and express it to them, not only do you receive it back ten fold, but it also spreads from you to them, and  from them to others.

You are contributing in the process of bringing love into the world.

No matter how much you give, you receive that much more back.  The paradox is that if you try to do this artificially, it won’t happen. It has to be genuine selfless love you give.

The good news is that it’s easy to do. There’s nothing like loving your kids and having them love you back.  It’s just awesome.

That’s that

So there you have it. This is what I’ve concluded over the years with my kids.

I don’t regret it. I love them to death.  And now that they’re old enough to start playing some of my more advanced board games, MAN is it fun to have them around.

Thanks for reading.

When is the Standard…too Standard?

March 21, 2013 in ART, CATHOLICISM

ART – When is the Standard too Standard?

When is the Standard too StandardThe Simpsons Quotes:

Bart: What a perfect plan. Now, Roger Myers will tell as just…
Myers: [announcing the studio’s re-opening]
And so when no one could think of a plan to resurect Itchy &
Scratchy, a young boy, a wonderful irrepressible young boy,
took it on his own to solve the problem. He discovered that the
postal service’s Mr. Zip. was just a rip-off of my father’s
stick figure character Manic Mailman.
[crowd murmors]
So the government gave me a _huge_ cash settlement, and Itchy &
Scratchy Studios is back in business.
[engines start up again]
Thanks to you, Lester.
[a Tracey-Ullman-era Bart comes on stage]
Bart: What the hell is going on?
Lisa: I don’t know, but it looks like you might have a little
competition all of a sudden.
Lester: Thanks everybody, but I couldn’t have done all this without the
help of my brainy sister Eliza.
[a Tracey-Ullman-era Lisa joins him]
Lisa: [gasps]

This question was asked to a Facebook group that I’m a part of. It was specifically about two things: Superheroes and Manga:

When is fitting the standard too… standard?

I’ve been looking at some kids’ writings and comics and have thought about familiarity between readers and the border of having something too generic and having something familiar that a reader can be comfortable with.

What comes to mind is when people draw things for Mangas and Comics. In comics, we all love superheroes in outfits, but how long until everyone looks the same or try-hard? Same goes for anime; how long until they all look like schoolgirls or kids who stumbled into a hot-topic?

There are a lot of memes that come into the expectations of our media, so it’s difficult to be really different, yet remain in the comfort zone long enough as to not scare off any prospective audience.

What are your experiences? Thoughts? Things to add?

I LOVE this question and I’ll do my best to answer it in the video below.  I also wrote out the answer if you’d rather read it. Either way you get the same info.

I didn’t answer the question thinking I have THE answer, I just wanted to try to give one:

The Sea of Sameness

So Manga has a standard and there’s also genres within Manga. So you’ve got the “school girl” genre, right? And you know there’s a market for the school girl kind of stories. If you want to join in, how are you going to stand out in a sea of sameness?

Same problem with Superheroes.  There’s a bunch a guys in tights fighting and they’re all superheroes. How are you going to stand out? Marvel and DC have basically monopolized the market.  How do you stand out in a market like that?

Well, I’m no expert, I don’t think I have THE answer.  If I did, I’d be doing it and I’d be rich, right? But I’m going to throw out my thoughts on the matter.  This is how I would approach the situation.

Okay so here goes:

My Answer

One of the reasons you’re not standing out is because you’re not saying anything new.  You’re not taking that genre and saying something new enough.

I understand that the genre exists because people are looking to get specific things within the genre.  Specific emotions, a specific experience. Every genre has specific experiences that they draw from that people are attracted to.

YOU have to hit all those beats…but different.  It’s like the idea from the book Save The Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You’ll Ever Need by Blake Snyder:

“What people want is the same but different.” They want to be surprised. They want to get something they didn’t see coming while experiencing the familiar.

I think, the problem is that you’re trying to say the same thing everyone else is saying. You don’t have a voice, you’re not saying ANYTHING.  YOU are not in the work. I think that’s really the problem.

I think you can make a successful Superhero story or School girl story if you’re actually saying something of VALUE.  That is new, that also fills a NEED.

Search for What you can Uniquely Fill

In order to do that, you have to find out what is MISSING. Then see how YOU can uniquely bring that subject to the table in a way that has not been done or said.

So it the end, it’s not really the genre. It’s about what is missing that you can fill, that you can uniquely say, within the confines of the genre.

You can also do this without being within a genre. You can do this by just finding something unique that you’re interested in talking about.  You can start there first and then put the genre on top of it later.

So that’s what I was thinking.  That’s my two cents.

What’s YOUR Answer?

What do you think? Am I wrong am I right, am I missing something? Let me know. Seriously, I don’t have THE answer here. I have a possible answer, I have a possible solution.

If you think it’s a good solution, let me know, if you think it’s not, let me know.

It’s a good topic for conversation.

I hope this was something worth thinking about.

Viva il Papa!

Hurray! We got a new Pope and I think he rocks!

I’ve been following all the new about him pretty obsessively.

I also like his face. So much so that I got an overwhelming urge to draw him.  So here’s my drawing of Pope Francis.

Two unpaid breaks from the show are coming up for me. 40 days video. Scene 7 Treatment

March 24, 2011 in CATHOLICISM, GHETTOMATION, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, WRITING

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I received the news this week that my hiatus is coming up.  In two weeks I’m going to be out of a job for two weeks, then I’ll come back to work for two more weeks, and I’ll be off on hiatus again for two more weeks after that. Once those two weeks are up, I’ll start back on the show for the new season.  What this all means is, that I’ll only be working for two weeks for the next two months.  I hope my finances can take the hit. Too weak.

In other Simpsons news, I had a meeting this week with the producer who’s getting to run the episode I’m working on right now.  It’s not Al Jean.  It’s someone else.  The person is supervising two episodes this season.

He came down to the studio in order to have a meeting with the director because he really wants to make sure all the notes and things are clear and are working.  He also wanted to be able to hear any suggestions we have to improve or adjust things in order to make things clearer and better.

That just rocks.

It’s probably the reason why this episode is so well put together in the first place. I think it’s one of the best shows of the season and it work real well.

The meeting was a blast. I hope I get to work with him again. I hope I can weasel myself into the next meeting, the way I did with this one. It was cool.

GHETTOMATION/CATHOLICISM

This “Illustrated Film” is obviously just comic panels put to music.  And it works GREAT! Nothing fancy, just the panels. Very cool. And the subject matter is perfect for Lent. The comic book artist who originally drew the comic is an illustrator by the name of Simon Smith.

Take a look:

WRITING

This turned out longer than I thought.  I didn’t expect that.

So I think I know what the hammer is now.  I think I know whether it can be trusted or not. I’m not sure whether I should say just yet.  I’m considering redesigning it. I’ll draw a few sketches of it and decide whether I like it or if it’s even necessary to have a redesign.  My deciding what the hammer is DID inform the final version of the scene though.

On a different note, at the end of  the last scene, Rob was left in a situation where he was perfectly justified to seek revenge.  The thing is, he’s the “good guy”, and to me, this means  his very actions need to be examples of goodness. Especially since the very case Rob is trying to make against the Sorcerers is that, what he does, is who he is, and while it’s not always perfect, is not bad or evil.  Rob CAN’T take revenge, because that would be taking the “low road”.  The “easy road”, and Rob is suppose to be virtuous enough to take the “road less traveled”. His actions also have to be in contrast to what the Sorcerers would do.  So once Rob is on even footing with the Sorcerers, would he just start kick the tar out them them? No. So how can I get Rob to fight these guys?

Only if he gets attacked first. Then all he’s doing is defending himself.  So if you notice, during the following scenes, Rob will not initiate a fight. He will only respond to it.  That way, his actions have just cause. Even if deep down, he was hoping they would attack him, if only to give him an excuse to fight back. He’s still human after all.

Scene 7 (Desire/Ability)

    • Rob becomes angry and his Raven flies from the bushes with Rob’s little weapon in it’s talons.  He drops it on Rob’s hand were it magically grows large and he begins to fight off the monsters and Sorcerers in an almost out of control berzerker rage.

Outdoor Shopping Area – Day continued

There’s only so much a guy can take before he says enough is enough.  Rob has hit this point.  Weapon or no weapon, he needs to take some action, if only for his sanity’s sake. He decides then and there, that he’s not going down without a fight. Rob sits up and begins to vent out loud.  He points out that it wasn’t like he was asking for anything unreasonable. He wasn’t even being mean or rude, in spite of that fact that they were being rude to HIM.  He even kept his side of the deal they’d made, which THEY broke.

During this time all the Sorcerers stop and listen to Rob. The creatures don’t move, seeing their masters are still. The Lead Sorcerer is annoyed at Rob for  pointing out what he knows all too well.

The White Raven comes to his senses and finds himself in the bushes. He turns and sees Rob’s weapon, right next to him.

Rob continues, his face looking down at the ground. His eyes forward.

defeat.jpg

He recounts how long it took him to scrounge up enough money to buy the hot dog.  That running from Sorcerers like them had made it difficult to hold down a job long enough sometimes to even collect his paychecks. How he hadn’t eaten for almost a day and a half and he’d specifically made a point to earn enough to eat THAT hot dog from THAT hot dog stand.

The anger inside Rob begins to swell.  He continues with how he had ONLY asked for ten minutes. How the only thing he had asked for was that small moment to finish his lunch. Yet they didn’t give it to him.  And yet, after all that, they have the gall to call HIM evil. To say HE is wrong. He tells the Sorcerers that he’s almost gotten used to being hated by them. That he can take being misrepresented by them. He can even tolerate being constantly attacked by them on occasion. BUT, he draws the line when someone steps on his lunch.

At that point, Rob’s weapon falls from the sky and into his hand.  Rob hadn’t expected this to happen but he hears the sound of his Raven above him and knows where it came from.  The power in the weapon begins to surge through him.

The Sorcerers are surprised to see the weapon fall into Rob’s hand and look up to see the Raven above.

Rob begins to glow white.  He slowly rises to his feet. The tiny little hammer in his hand begins to grow on it’s own.  It grows enormous. The hammer head alone, becoming larger than any warhammer they had ever seen.  It too glows with it’s own power.

Rob grabs hold of the remaining rags of shirt still on his body and tears them off himself, revealing a bloody and bruise torso. He raises his eyes to the Sorcerers for the first time. They are glowing white, and seem as bright as two suns.

The Sorcerers are taken aback. They hadn’t expected this and they all become uneasy.

Once more Rob speaks. And once more, he gives the Sorcerers one last chance to walk away and leave him alone.  Even now, after all this, Rob is STILL willing to let the Sorcerers go as if nothing had happened.

The Lead Sorcerer seeing his companions are shaken,  claps and commends Rob for the show, but he tells him they don’t scare off that easily. The Lead Sorcerer, who is the only one of them who sensed the power in the weapon, knows it’s a weapon not to trifled with. Yet, he also has eyes, and sees Rob’s condition. He doubts he has the power to fight and is therefore bluffing. Otherwise he wouldn’t have given the Sorcerers “a chance to walk away”. He tells Rob they aren’t afraid of him. The other Sorcerers are reassured by their boss’s words. They all look ready to strike.  The Lead Sorcerer turns to them and they all exchange looks.  They nod to each other knowing the next move as if they had been told verbally.

The Lead Sorcerers yells out a command and all the creatures attack Rob at once. He commands the other Sorcerers to not throw ice, or fireballs, to avoid hitting the monsters, but he tells them they need to make sure Rob doesn’t escape from them.

The two Winged Apes reach Rob moments after each other. Rob saw them coming and began swinging his hammer at the one that was going to land first. Before the Ape knows what hit him, the hammer comes crashing into it’s chest. An explosion of white light comes out of said contact  and the Ape shatters into the magick particles it had been constructed out of.  Within the same motion, not missing a beat, Rob removes the bottom half of the hammer’s hilt, revealing a long curved dagger and swings his arms over his head and down to his opposite side from where the hammer is.  The dagger finds the second Winged Ape, just as it land by Rob, seconds after the other.  It get cut from head  to chest, revealing magickal light from it’s wound.  Surprise on it’s face, it explodes into magick particles.

The Sorcerers are a tad shocked.

Rob returned the dagger back to it’s place in the hilt of the hammer and turns to face the approaching  Viper Creature. The two pause as they stare at each other for a beat. Then Rob makes the first move and runs at it. The Viper Creature strikes. Rob jumps out of the way, just as the Viper Creatures fangs are about to strike.  Rob then brings the hammer down hard. It catches the creature right on it’s head.  The force of the hammer takes the creature’s head straight to the ground smashing it between the hammer and the floor.  The floor cracks with force. The Viper Creature’s body recoils, knocking down trees and benches. Then the creature disappears, returning the magick particles it was created from.

Stunned, the Sorcerers can do nothing but stare in disbelief.

END OF SCENE

I thought about making the fight longer. I thought I might have Rob take more time dispatching the creatures, but then I thought we’d seen enough fighting.  I kinda wanted to get to the point.  The story needed to move on.

Whether I will need to make that fight longer later will be up to what the final version looks like.

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Last week I managed to not only rough out Act 2 but also Act 3 on show 21.  I spent this week trying to tighten up the roughs on both boards. I managed to finish Act 2, I have yet to finish Act 3.  I’m not sure my revision partner will get to Act 4 and I might end up getting it at the last minute. I hope not. We’ll see.

WEBSITES/COMIC BOOKS/CATHOLICISM

I’m usually not a fan of “Catholic religious comics”. The ones I’ve been exposed to have  really been way too sweet with Saints that are so perfect they might as well be walking icons. They’re so perfect they’re inhuman and the stories are so preachy and contrived, they are completely unrelateable.

If they aren’t that, then they are so serious, humorless and full of suffering that, reading them is like subjecting yourself to torture.

I myself have thought about creating a Religious comic in order to see if it’s possible to create an appealing, compelling, fun and entertaining one. Well, I’m happy to say that I don’t have to do that, because someone already HAS.

Mitchelle D’Souza, a cartoonist currently (as of the time of this writing) living in Canada is working on a Fatima Webcomic, and it’s exactly that.  It’s appealing, compelling, fun, entertaining AND FUNNY. I LOVE it.  It hits all the beats I wanted to see in a Catholic comic.  If I make a Religious comic, I hope it’s half as good as this.  Reading it really made me smile. The characters are human, and full of flaws, which makes  you really feel for them.

It’s a comic that retells the true story of the extraordinary events that happened in Fatima in 1917  to three Shepherd children.  It’s all told through the eyes of the youngest of the three, Jacinta. Her antics are just really fun to read.

Here’s a sample page from the comic:

Last pg of ch 2 revised

If you’re Catholic or interested in history, or are really into Fatima. If you want to put a smile on you face to see Jacinta do silly things, you should read this comics.

WRITING

It’s moments like these that I wonder why I decided to go with an action story.  There’s nothing worse than sitting down, knowing you have to write action and not knowing what the heck to write.  Trying not to repeat myself while attempting to write something interesting was a huge pain. Perhaps I was approaching it the wrong way, I don’t know.  All I know is, that this was very difficult for me.   In the end, I think I DID repeat myself a bit.

It’s hard because the point of the fight was not the fight in itself but the outcome of the fight, namely, the prevention of Rob being able to eat his hot dog and the knocking away of the hot dog from Rob. In fact, I kinda started in the second part of the fight before I wrote the first part. I don’t know why. It just seemed like a way to get started.

The entire fight was just a stream of conscientiousness kind of thing. I didn’t know what I would write until I wrote it.  I’m just glad I was able to put something down.

You will notice that the small synopsis below is different than the original I wrote a few weeks earlier. I moved the stepping of the hot dog moment into this act as opposed to next act. I thought it would create a much more climatic low point for act 2.

Scene 6 (Inequity/Projection)

    • Finding himself friendless and trapped, Rob decides to eat his hot dog there and then only one of the monsters causes the hot dog to end up a few feet from him, safely on it’s plate.  The bad guys close in. Ignoring the Sorcerers, Rob goes for his hot dog only to have the Other Male Sorcerer step on it, leaving Rob stunned for a second. They laugh seeing that they’ve won and look forward in anticipation to the glory they will receive. (Act 2 climax).

Outdoor Shopping Area – Day continued

Trapped, friendless and alone, Rob sees there’s no hope for getting away.  The Sorcerers and creatures slowly make their way closer, relishing the situation.  Rob has reached the point of not caring about anything anymore except getting to eat his hot dog.  If they aren’t going to let him leave, and they’re not going to leave him alone to eat his lunch in peace, he might as well eat it in the midst of all the chaos.  He’ll eat as he fights. At least that way, he can get what he wants in the end. It  may not be the most ideal way to eat, but he’ll get to eat.

Rob expresses this out loud to the Sorcerers, and it actually hurts their pride to be taken so lightly by him. Especially considering the situation he’s in.

He grabs his hot dog, opens his mouth and is about to take a bite. Before he can get to it, he ducks under a Winged Ape’s claw.  He quickly climbs over a bench and hides behind a tree putting in between him and the Ape.  He goes for a bite but finds another Ape behind him who tries to smash him with both it’s fists.  Rob moves out of the way and almost drops his hot dog. He then dodges a tree that was hurled at him from an Ape. The plate was hit off of Robs hand and goes flying through the air.

flying-hot-dog.jpg

Rob runs after it and catches it. Before he could catch his breath his looks up to see the Viper Creature’s fanged face lunging at him. He doesn’t have time to leap and he finds himself prying open the Viper Creature’s jaw with one hand and his two feet, while holding on to the plate with his lunch the with his free hand. The Viper Creature begins to fling it’s head around, trying to get Rob  to stop.  Rob tries to hold on to his hot dog while keeping from being smashed.  His strength begins to give out. He could only hope he could let go of the jaws fast enough to not get caught in them.

He let’s go and goes flying through the air. He lands hard on the ground, almost right back where he started in between the creatures and the Sorcerers. The plate gets knocked out of his hand when he lands, flies through the air, bounces and lands safely a few yards away; hot dog miraculously still on the plate. Rob sits up.

Everyone stops to look. They all turn to look at each other for a beat.

Then chaos.

Ice flies toward, Rob who dodges it.  Rob runs toward one Winged Ape. The other Winged Ape slashes at him  but he was using the other Ape to crawl and leap off of.  One Ape slashes the other sending it reeling.  Rob sees  fireballs coming his way, at the same time he sees the Winged Ape that was left standing coming at him. The Viper creature spins around to get at him as well. He heads in the direction of the Viper creature as the fireballs land behind him. The fireballs continue to follow him landing on the Viper creature’s body and it hisses in pain. He heads toward the hot dog, jumping on the viper’s body as it tries to get him off.  Fireballs still hitting it.  The Winged Ape flies up to reach Rob, and Rob leaps off the Viper Creature as a fireball hits the Ape which land in the spot he had just vacated.  The fireball blast sends Rob tumbling to the ground. He looks up and sees his hot dog a feet away. He scrawls to reach it. Right as he about to get it, a foot slams into it and smashes it. The hot dog is nothing but mush and completely uneatable.

Rob looks on shocked. He can’t believe it. After all that. The ONE thing he wanted. The ONE thing that made the intolerable situation he’s in tolerable.  He slowly looks up, his eyes following the foot that had smashed his hopes. The veiled  face of the Other Male Sorcerer stands about him. His shoulders chuckling in amusement. Rob lowers his head in defeat. He gives up. They won.

The Sorcerer mocks Rob, like a bully in a playground. Asking him if he’s going to cry.  The female Sorcerer laughs. The Lead Sorcerer frowns at his colleagues’ childishness. The Other Males Sorcerer, glories in their triumph over Rob, as he announces out loud to the Lead Sorcerer how they will gain honor and prestige from all the other Sorcerers for doing what no others had been able to do before them. The Lead Sorcerer responds, telling the Other Males Sorcerers that even if it’s so, they should at least behave with dignity and have some semblance of honor in their triumph.

The Other Main Sorcerer, tells his boss that he’s giving Rob all the honor he deserves and proceeds to kick Rob in the face.

END OF SCENE

The last kick to the face was just to add insult to injury (or is it, injury to injury?).  At this point in the story, I’m hoping the audience is emotionally ready to see some justice done.

Since I wrote the above, I thought about it a bit, wondering if I could improve it somehow. I’ve decided to leave it that way it is for now BUT it’s not set in stone.  I think if I change it, I will go with another version that I thought up recently.  I was thinking that, instead of the bad guys trying to hurt Rob, they might just be trying to destroy the hot dog deliberately. That would actually change the dynamics of the fight quite a bit and might even make it more interesting to watch.  I’ll think about it some more and decide on what I’m going to do at the storyboard stage.

My thinking process as I add values to my thumbnail sketch. Interview with an Exorcist.

August 19, 2010 in ART, CATHOLICISM, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Wednesday was very exciting. I was asked to join a story meeting with my director, the head director of the show and the two writers who co-wrote the current script of the show we’re working on. It was really amazing. I was asked to join in when they were discussing ACT 4 of the show, which is what I was assigned.

I found it very interesting as the writers went over the script picking out bit of the script that they had specific visions for. They also told us reasons why they put certain things in, so that we could understand their intentions better.  It was also great to ask them what they meant in sections we were unclear about.

It was almost like a listening to a DVD commentary, only, we got to construct the show based on the commentary. I hope I get to do it again.

ART

(For those of you coming in late to these posts, if you want to read what my project is about, CLICK HERE to learn about the general world the story takes place in, and CLICK HERE if you want to know the story itself.)

I settled on a final look for the snake monster this week:

sb-32.jpg

On the page above, I drew the top right drawing first and made my way down the page. I thought the first drawing was too “handsome”. A bit generic. Looked a bit like Martian Manhunter.  Also, the features were too evenly spaced out and it didn’t look snake like enough.

The second drawing down was better but the face was too big and I wanted it to be more bunched up in the front of the head.  It thought perhaps the size of the eyes were contributing to all the “real estate” the face was taking up.  So I tried again.

The third drawing, I liked a lot and I even thought I’d finally found what I was looking for. So  much so that I drew a few more versions of it on the left hand side of the page. As I did this, I realized he was still too “handsome”.  Too human. I still wanted more of a snake look. So I tried one more time.

I drew the final face at the bottom of the page.  I made the eyes even smaller and spread them far apart, like a snake.  It was exactly what I wanted.  It’s not pretty, just weird.

Having finally nailed down what I wanted everything to look like, I decided to start thumbnailing the composition I wanted for my style guide/test.  But before I write directly about what I did, I will point out that I’ve decided to take away one of the monsters I had originally written.  In the story outline, I had written in a Stone Elemental. It was a place holder monster I’d put in so I could have one monster for each Sorcerer.  I had been planning to replace that monster with a more “Lovecraftian” monster. Something with a lot of tentacles. I decided to not go with that idea for two reasons.

  1. I’m lazy and I just didn’t want to spend anymore time designing monsters.
  2. I liked the Winged Apes so much, I thought I could use two of them instead of just one.

So there are still three monsters, they just aren’t the original ones that I wrote in the outline. Okay, so here’s the page I drew my thumbnails on:

sb-33.jpg

Remember what I said two weeks ago about what I was going for with the composition?   I was trying to make Rob small against something big in order to make him look vulnerable and at the same time I wanted to make the Sorcerers look menacing too?  Well, I came up with some shape placements I thought  might do the trick.  If you notice on the page above, the first drawing on the top of the page is basically just shapes.  This was an idea I had gotten in the middle of the work day. In order to remember it, I quickly put the shapes down on paper. This was really all I needed to do to see if it was going to work.

The second sketch was drawn later as a slight variation of the shot above but I didn’t continue with it because I wasn’t happy at all with what it looked like.

The final sketch at the bottom of the page I drew by taking the shape masses from the first sketch and  refining them into actual characters.  The monsters are a unit and the Sorcerers are treated as a unit too.  I also tried to tell an individual story with every character.  Some of the poses need a little work and there still needs to be some adjusting with the space relationships, but it’s pretty much what I’m going to go with.

The next thing I wanted to do was to figure out the tonal values within the drawing. To achieve this, I took some tracing paper and a black Prismacolor pencil, and began to add tone. I decided not to be too precious about drawing perfectly within the lines, so it’s a bit messy and rough.

(PRO TIP: Prismacolor pencil is erasable on tracing paper. Many development guys in the industry draw their development tonal drawings on tracing paper and then color copy the final on regular paper.)

The idea is to add a different value to the foreground, middle ground and background elements.  The values I was using would be restricted to, dark, mid tone and light. Only using those three colors helps simply the process and allows you to see the tones as a whole.  It really doesn’t matter which values go to which “ground”. You can just as easily choose the background to be the darkest value as the lightest.  As long as it makes the picture clear and gets across the feel you want the drawing to have.

My first thought was to let the foreground have the mid tone.  I decided to make the background the darkest and the middle ground the lightest so that the main character popped out more.   At the time, I didn’t really like it all that much:

sb-34.jpg

Part of the problem was that the sky and the buildings are kinda TWO backgrounds and they were throwing me off. I also didn’t like the idea of making all the buildings so dark.

I tried again. This time I decided to make the foreground the darkest and the background sky the mid tone, while keeping the background buildings and middle ground characters the lightest.  This didn’t look good to me at all.  I added a little bit of shadows on the monsters to attempt to balance it all, but it just looked odd. (possibly because I was so sloppy with it):

sb-35.jpg

I was getting frustrated.  Decided to refocus and try to keep in mind two basic things:

  1. My center of interest had to be the place of highest contrast. In this case, the place where the darkest dark and the lightest light would meet.
  2. Try adding a definite light source.

Okay, so I obviously my center of interest was Rob. He either had to be the darkest dark surrounded by the lightest light or the lightest light surrounded the darkest dark (as I had in the first sketch)…or both. I decided to try a combination of both. He would have both black and white in different areas of his body:

sb-36.jpg

My thinking was, just because a ground plane is dominated by a tone, it doesn’t mean that other lighter or darker tones don’t have a place within it as long those values don’t dominate that ground plane. SO, I chose to make Robs pants the darkest dark, and I also darkened his upper body as the cast shadows of the monsters fell on him. The rest of Rob would therefore be in light creating and interesting play of contrasting black and white tones.  This meant that the light source would come from the upper left corner of the drawing.

Since Rob was the darkest dark, the background behind him needed to be the lightest light to make him pop out.  Now I had the middle ground dominated by the darkest dark of the drawing and the background would be dominated by the lightest.  Still, there would be SOME light on Rob himself to make him pop out a bit more.  The foreground ended up with the mid tone.  This seemed to work.

To add to visual interest, and to lead the eye around the drawing a bit more, I also decided that the flying winged ape would be darker than the other.  This will make you “read” him but I’ll make sure he’s not placed against too light a background. Also, I decided that the farthest Sorcerer on the right with his arms crossed would be darker than the other two. That way, you will read him.  I’ll just make sure that his darker parts aren’t as dark as Rob’s. This will make a triangular composition of dark areas. Hopefully, doing this will make your eyes travel around the picture.

Another thing I needed to make sure I did was to chose ONE tone out of the three to be dominant. That ONE tone needs to cover 50% or more of the drawing.  Then I had to pick another tone to be the second most dominant. Doing this adds visual interest.

I seemed to have accidentally made the dark tone the most dominant followed closely by the lightest tone. Still, I think the light and dark tones are almost too balanced in my thumbnail. Also, I don’t think I did a good enough job differentiating the values. The darks almost look like the same value as the mid tones. This kinda messes up the point of doing a tonal pass.  I shouldn’t have been so sloppy.  That’s what I get for being impatient.

Seeing all the thumbnails here on the blog has allowed me to take a good look at them all and now I think I had it right the first time with the FIRST tonal pass. As dynamic as the lighting is on the last one, it covers Rob and the monsters too much in darkness.  I kinda want them to be a little more visible. Perhaps having the buildings be dark wouldn’t be so bad after all.

What do you think?

CATHOLICISM

It’s not secret I’m Catholic and love my faith. One of the more sensational aspects of Catholicism comes in the guise of exorcisms.  The subject seems to fascinate people quite a bit and has been the theme of many passed and future movies. Because they’ve been so sensationalized in movies, exorcisms seem like fantasy. Yet, for Catholic exorcists, they are a very serious business.

Below, you will find an audio interview with an Exorcist.  I found the interview fascinating and thought I’d share it.  But first, a little bit of what Wikipedia says about the priest you will be listening to:

Malachi Brendan Martin Ph.D. (July 23, 1921 – July 27, 1999) was a Catholic priest, theologian, writer on the Catholic Church, and professor at the Vatican’s Pontifical Biblical Institute. He held three doctorates[1][2] and was the sole author of sixteen books covering religious and geopolitical topics, which were published in eight languages. He wrote additional books under pen names and in collaboration with others. He was a controversial commentator on the Vatican and other matters involving the Church.[3] Martin spoke at least ten languages[4][5] including Irish, English, French, Dutch, German, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Hebrew and Modern Arabic, and also knew classical languages like Latin, Classical Greek, Aramaic and Classical Arabic. He lived in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey, France, and the United States and traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East.[1]

Fr. Malachi seems to be a very controversial figure within the Church AND without (after all, he’s an Exorcist). Never the less, I found the interview interesting. The interview begins with Fr. Malachi talking about the Devil, Hell, Evil, then turns to Satanism and the nature of sin, which leads him to the topic of Exorcism.

In this interview, when speaking about the movie THE EXORCIST, Fr. Malachi basically says the movie version was laughable, the real thing is far worse. Enjoy:

The new Star Trek movie. First Communions and fevers. Obama and Notre Dame. Board games into video games, video games into board games.

May 21, 2009 in BOARD GAMES, CATHOLICISM, FAMILY, MOVIES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEO GAMES

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Working late for two days straight again this week.  Need to make up the hours because I’m going to be missing a day of work to take care of the kids for a day.  My work load isn’t too crazy but the scenes I need to do are pretty complicated.  I’m working on a new crew right now. I’m helping out for the week. I’m not sure what happens afterward.  Hopefully I get put on a new crew.  Right now, the show I’m helping out on, is a show from last season.  This is their last week to ship everything.  I’m feeling the pressure.

FAMILY

Big day for Carolina’s family last Saturday.  Angelita, Carolina’s youngest daughter, did her First Communion.  We were all very happy for her.  Afterward we gathered at their house and had a First Communion party.  Munchkin had a fantastic time.  She had so much fun that when it was time to go, she left crying.

Meanwhile Dante and Alesha had to stay home.  Dante had a fever late last week.  He wasn’t doing very well at all.  Still, in spite of the fact that he was burning up, he insisted on sitting down to eat.  He also wanted to walk around and play.  He wanted so much to do what he always does, but the poor boy found himself not being able to do much.  By the end of the week, he was back to normal.  He just needed to spend at least one weekend at home without going out anywhere.

CATHOLICISM

I went to get my lunch on Monday from the kitchen at work.  As I was walking back to my desk I overheard a conversation at a  table in the kitchen from my fellow co-workers talking about the whole Obama/Notre Dame thing. Of course, most of the people I work with are on Obama’s side of the debate; and of course, they saw it as a purely political thing.  “Conservative Catholics” vs. “Liberal Catholics”. Their conversation was also the typical anti-Catholic prejudice, you hear everywhere.  “Those Catholics don’t know what they’re doing, they have it all wrong, they’re holding on to ancient things that don’t mean anything”…etc.   It ruined my lunch.  All I heard was a couple of sentences but it got me sooo steamed up it just ruined my lunch.  I couldn’t stop thinking about all the things I would say to them and how I would say it.  How “I would SHOW THEM”.  How my arguments would make them look foolish.  How I would show how much smarter and more intellectual my view was.  How arrogant, heartless and mean an angry Catholic could be…which is, of course, the reason I couldn’t do it and didn’t do it.  I was too angry to say anything that wouldn’t have done more harm than good. It wouldn’t have been a conversion about the topic at hand so much as an exercise in arrogance and pride on my part.

I wondered though, if I HAD said something in a calm, collected, and charitable way, if they would have seen it as a political argument rather than a logical one anyway.  I wonder how much I would be able to say to them that wouldn’t have sounded as if I was politically “Conservative” instead of just Catholic.  Why is it that if you live your faith as it is taught by the Church  you are automatically “a close minded, ultra conservative, right winger”? Why is it that being unfaithful to your Church and faith is celebrated as being “progressive” and open minded? Yes, I understand that there are political Conservatives that are Catholics. I also understand that there are political Liberals that are Catholics. Yet, that really shouldn’t be the issue.  The issue should really be about whether you are a FAITHFUL Catholic or not. You shouldn’t put you parties or political views ahead of the dogmas of your faith.  If you do, it only goes to show which one of the two is your REAL Religion.  In the end, it just  made me sad.

MOVIES

I  used to like Star Wars more than Star Trek.  I thought that Star Wars, in general, was a bit more fun and Star Trek was a bit to “hard sci-fi” to be as fun.  Then George Lucas released his  Star Wars prequels and pretty much ruined the fun of Star Wars by making three movies that never actually captured the fun of the original three.

Along comes the new Star Trek movie and does to Star Trek what Lucas couldn’t pull off with Star Wars. It updates the Star Trek franchise, makes it fun, captures the essence of what made the original Star Trek work (the characters), takes away the dryness of Star Trek, adds some action and makes it cool to like Star Trek.  Yes, the intellectual parts and the hard science, that made Star Trek truly geeky, are missing, but what we get in it’s place is a good fun time.  Hopefully, some of the intellectual stuff will make an appearance in the next movies, for now, I’m happy with what they gave us.

BOARD GAMES/VIDEO GAMES

Haven’t written about games in a while so I just thought I’d write about a board game that will become a video game and some video games that have become board games.

  • Dungeon Twister

Andy and I played a game of Dungeon Twister last Friday.  He beat me, but I think the game would have kept going. On hindsight I think we messed up a rule that would have changed the way we saw the last move of the game.

Andy really likes the game. He’s liked it ever since we played it for the first time months ago.  It’s a dungeon crawl-ish chess game with a modular board whose parts twist around. There is no luck in the game.  It’s all tactics and strategy. Here’s the Description of the game:

Dungeon Twister is a 2-player high level strategy game where 2 teams of adventurers with various powers are trapped in a dungeon. The board is composed of 8 rooms that can be moved and rotated by the players. Each turn, a player is able to spend actions to move around the dungeon, pick up and use items, battle with the opponents team, or turn and move the rooms of the dungeon.

The goal is to reach 5 victory points. Points are collected by moving adventurers out of the dungeon or by killing an opponent’s adventurer. Treasures are disseminated across the whole dungeon and will bring the adventurers well-needed powers.

Each player has the same characters, each with different powers. Some run fast, some fight or disarm traps. The cleric heals, magician burns everything in sight and the goblin is so weak that the simple fact of getting him out will bring you two victory points.

Combat and actions are managed via cards. To move, fight, heal or turn a room, you must manage action points obtained by playing cards. Those cards are not drawn but selected from a set of cards by both players. Both players have access to the same panel of cards at the beginning of the game so the game is really about managing the resources and adapting to the changing environment.

It has recently  been announced that a new version of the game is coming out called: Dungeon Twister 2: Prison. This version of the game will actually be different and yet will still play the same as the original and it will be “backwards compatible” with the original. It will be coming out in December. The interesting part is that the game will also be released for Xbox live through Hydravision at the same time.

A few years back, when the first Advance Wars game came out for the GBA, I bought it and totally fell in love with it.  I played that game once for an entire night.  I started playing it at around 7 or 8 pm, looked up after some hours had gone by and discovered the sun was rising.  It was just such a fun game.   I didn’t buy the new ones that came out after that, Mostly because (like the Street fighter games) the new games where pretty much, more of the same and I hadn’t (and still haven’t) unlocked all the maps in the game I have, and the original allowed you to make your own maps as well.  Theoretically I can keep playing the game without needing to buy a new one.  Besides, I haven’t played the game in a few years.

Just found out from the Purple Pawn website that someone has made a free print and play version of the game called Skirmish Wars: Advance Tactics.  They put it up on BGG  and I downloaded the pdf.  It looks great. They made the maps modular so you can create your own scenarios and everything. I’m so going to print it out.  I just need the figure out how “fancy” I want to make my version. I’m sure Andy will be up for a game. I just hope the game doesn’t take too long to play.

Above is a screenshot of what the original video game looks like.  Below is the board game version.

Just looking at the picture make me want to play it.  It looks so fun.

  • FITS

From the mind of Reiner Knizia comes FITS.  It’s Tetris the board game. It sounds great.  He really came up with a great way to translate the game into a tabletop game.

FITS (Fill In The Spaces) is essentially a multi-player Tetris . Each player has an inclined board on which they place different polyominoes – like Blokus pieces, with three, four, or five squares. Cards are drawn from a pile to tell the players which piece to take. The pieces may be rotated and reversed before they slide down the inclined area to dock to other gaming pieces, but unlike Tetris cannot be slid horizontally once dropped. Scoring is based on quantity and configuration of squares left uncovered.

Unlike original Tetris there is no time pressure but like Tetris there is no player interaction as every player is engaged with his own board.

This game is now on my Wishlist under “Must have”.  Definitely looks like a game most people will want to play if I was to bring it out.

Munchkin gets sick again. Went to confession. Thinking about creative activities

March 26, 2009 in CATHOLICISM, FAMILY, SOME THOUGHTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I feel like I’m not getting enough work done.  I’m working like crazy but it feels like I’m not getting anything done.  I don’t know why that is.  Maybe it’s because the scenes I’m doing are complicated or maybe it’s because half the stuff I’m doing is on the computer and the other half is on paper.  There is also the fact that some of the scenes I’m working on need to be printed out on paper so that I can work on them; only it’s a big pain to do so and I end up spending a lot of time printing the stuff out and trying to get the size of the artwork to work the way I want.

Been staying late the last few days to make up the hours I didn’t work last Friday.  More on that below.

FAMILY

Last Thursday, Alesha stayed home with Munchkin because she came down with some sort of stomach flu.  Munchkin spent the whole day laying down, taking in liquids, watching cartoons,  and going to the poddy.  She seemed to be doing better by the end of the day so Friday morning we woke her and Dante up to go to daycare.  I gave her morning sippy cup of Pediasure (doctor prescribed) and we left the house.  Five minutes letter, we heard a gooshy splat sound coming from the back seat.  Alesha said, “Oh no.”  We both turned around only to see that Munchkin had vomited her Pediasure all over herself.  As we stared, she then proceeded to projectile vomit the rest of it all over the back seat of the car. Needless to say, we turned the car around and I told Alesha I was going to stay home with Munchkin this time.

After rushing to clean up the back of the car, Alesha was on her way.  Meanwhile I got Munchkin comfortable, and put the blankets and coats she had puked on (that where in the back seat and protected the car from the puke) in the washing machine. Munchkin, once again, spent the day laying down, taking in liquids and watching cartoons, although she DID sleep for a veeerrry long time at midday.

By Saturday, she was definitely better. The day before, she could hardly get up.  Saturday, she was walking around happily.  Alesha and I had a lot to do during the weekend so we asked my mom if she would mind taking care of the kids for the day.  She told us she would love to.  Alesha went over to Munchkin and asked:

abuelitas-house-02.jpg

So off we went.  I ran errands all day while the kids had a blast with my mom. It was a very eventful couple of days.

CATHOLICISM

One of the errands I need to do this Saturday was to go to Confession.  It had been about four months and I really needed it. The church I went to had some fairly long lines.  I hate that.  I’m always afraid that I won’t get a turn.  On the other hand, long lines are a good thing.  It means people care enough, and know enough to go and take advantage of the Sacrament of Confession; which I always see as a reflection of the spiritual health of the parish. Still, I don’t like the long lines.

The most interesting part about Confession this time around was my penance.  The priest told me to take out my Bible, open it up to Psalm 51, read it to myself at first, then read it out loud and pray it to God.  He told me, praying the Psalms out loud was a very Jewish way of praying them. I don’t know if that’s true but I did as I was asked, and I must say, it’s a very moving way to pray a Psalm.  Not only that, but Psalm 51 is an amazingly appropriate Psalm to pray as penace.  Though I didn’t know it before I read it, I didn’t realize I was already familiar with it (or at least parts of it).  The Psalm is one of the Psalms, always read in the Liturgy of the Hours.  It was one of those, “Ah ha! So that’s where it’s from” moments for me. I might read that Psalm from now on after Confession, even if I’m not asked to.

SOME THOUGHTS

Been sending e-mails back and forth with my friend Raul (see the bottom of last weeks post). He’s been sending me copies of the pitchbibles of the shows he’s been pitching around the animation studios. I must say, I’m very impressed with them.  Not only with the fun ideas he has, but the amount of work he puts into them.  Everyone of his pitchbibles has the outline of a complete episode plus a few quick hooks for other episodes.  They also have drawings of the main characters and a history of each.

This has got me thinking, what have I done that is anywhere near as complete as those? NOTHING! I have a ton of ideas of my own.  I keep a book near my bed where both Alesha and I have written out germs of ideas or even written out slightly more fleshed out concepts.  For some ideas, I have small doodles, for some I have tried designing the characters;  others, I have even gone so far as to try to write the outline, but none of those ideas have been done to completion. Even the ones I have done the outlines for I have had to re-edit some story flaws, only to find myself get stuck somehow on how to fix them and they end up being left incomplete.  I mean, wasn’t I suppose to be working on a webcomic.  Well, where the heck is it?

Seeing Raul‘s out put is very inspiring.  It’s made me want to come up with even more ideas of my own. Not necessarily to sell as kids cartoons like he’s doing, but just fun ideas for stories that I think would be cool to write.  In fact, on the way home on Tuesday, I came up with four that I haven’t seen anyone do before (I googled them and they don’t exist).  I immediately wrote them down in my “idea book” when I got home, but will they go anywhere?

Also, I’ve been thinking of maybe doing some freelance drawings for some role playing game magazines as well.  Just to do something different. But in order to do that, I would need to draw something in the style of what they’re looking for as a portfolio piece. I’ve been meaning to get to that, but I haven’t done it.  Why?  Why is it, that when I get home, the last thing I want to do is draw?  I just want to relax.  I don’t want to keep working.  Not only that but I when I have any free time where I can actually do something creative, I don’t.  It seems like, I like the idea of drawing and writing all these creative things, but I don’t actually like doing them.  Yet I get all excited about them when I think about them and I can’t wait to get started on them. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I have to somehow find a way to discipline myself into completing SOMETHING or I’ll spend the rest of my life wishing I had.

Simpsons episode that everyone helped on. I IMDBed myself. Lent

March 5, 2009 in CATHOLICISM, RANDOM THING, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

OH NO! I’m so sorry everyone.  I blew it. I didn’t know that the show everyone helped out on, came on last weekend.

Lucky for us, you can watch the show from the Fox site or on Hulu, in case you missed it. The part you guys will be looking for, starts about a minute into the show after the credits.  It turned out really good. In the end, there were so many suggestions (from inside and outside the studio) that not all could be included. Hopefully you will get to see yours.

(EDIT: Do to the fact that some people aren’t able to watch the show from the above sources, I’m putting in this really shaky version of the show.  It isn’t the greatest but it shows the clips. They start at 3:35.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhuKqzoOt9M

If you’re looking this show, it’s called: How the test was won.

RANDOM THING

I IMDBed myself earlier this week.  I was listening to a podcast where they were conducting an interview with an actor and they asked him is he was on IMDB.  This got me wondering is I was on IMDB; so I went to the site and typed out my name.  There were a few Luis Escobar’s and, at first, I couldn’t find myself, but sure enough, there I was.  It was really very odd.  Someone somewhere has bothered to take note of what I’ve worked on and has put it in the database.  That’s just so strange to me. The site says I’ve worked on only 13 shows during my 16 years on the show.  That doesn’t seem right.  Especially since I work on at least two shows a season and I help out on a show or two in between shows. A bit inaccurate I would say, but at least you can see some of the shows I’ve worked on.

Anyway, it was really odd to find myself on the site.

CATHOLICISM

(Haven’t written about this subject in a while.)

It’s Lent.  I’m hoping to have a “better” Lent than I had last year.  Last year, I don’t remember what I did, but it sure didn’t feel like Lent and I don’t think I got anything out of it. A few Lents ago, I would get into this things where I would fast really hard during Lent.  I would eat very little and it would really be painful.  I wouldn’t even give up my fast on Sundays (though I would ease up on it a bit). I was often told by my family that I was being a bit too hard on myself.  On the one hand, doing this really made you feel like it was Lent. It felt like was really going through something and I did a lot of praying to get through it; not only that, but when Easter came, it was the greatest thing ever and you really felt it.  On the other hand, I was sooo angry and grouchy all the time because I was so hungry all the time.   I would snap at people and I was generally in a lousy mood; which is, of course, not the point of the thing.   Also, the last Lent I fasted this way, it felt really routine. I wasn’t getting much out of it but a slight discomfort. It didn’t really help me pray much and it was kinda, like I said, routine.   The next year I didn’t do it and tried something else that failed miserably.

This year, I’m doing something a little more spiritually positive.  For my alms giving this year, I’ll be giving some money to some charities as well as some to SQPN. Since I try to pray a Rosary everyday as well as use the Praystation Portable Podcast to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, I thought for my prayer time, I’d read a book.  I thought I’d try to finish reading the book Christianity for Modern Pagans, by Peter Kreeft.  It’s an annotated version of Blaise Pascal‘s Pensées which Kreeft edited, outlined and explains.   Blaise Pascal is awesome and Kreeft commentary is just fantastic.  It’s a fun, deep, meaningful read that leaves me thinking for hours. Usually after I’ve stop reading, I feel as if I’ve just come out of deep meditative prayer.

Last but not least, for my fasting/abstinence Lent thing, I’m going to abstain from playing any video games.  I thought I should maybe abstain from playing board games but that would be like saying I would abstain from vacations during Lent.  In the same way that I don’t go on vacations all the time and therefore It wouldn’t be that big a deal to abstain from vacations, I don’t play board games enough for it to be worth my time.  On the other hand, I play my Gameboy DS everyday.  It’s really the only way I get any board gaming in.  I own three games on my DS that are digital board games: (1)Club House Games (which has 20 traditional board games playable on it), (2) a Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2008 card game video game (which I love and I will write about some other time) (3) Yu-Gi-Oh! DungeonDice Monsters video game (which is merely okay but interesting. It’s the video game version of a failed dice game Konami put out in 1994.) and I have  two games that are not  board game video games but play like board games: (1) Advance Wars and (2) Civilizations Revolution.  I play these games a lot and I never go anywhere without a Gameboy in my pocket, ready to come out whenever I have a bit of free time to play for a few minutes, until now; and boy do I feel naked.  Also, since I’ve given up video games, this means no PS2 or Xbox either, so I can’t play some of the board game-ish games that I own on them either (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Culdcept…etc).  I must say, it hurts quite a bit more than I thought it would.  I didn’t really think it would effect me that way it has; which is exactly what I wanted.  Now I’m really looking forward to Easter.  I understand that, I really should be looking forward to Easter for the REAL reason Easter is important, namely, the resurrection, and the Salvation of the world, but the abstinence thing, really makes it a little more emotionally tangible and a little less abstract for me. I suppose that’s the whole point of this spiritual exercise.

Simpsons Ride invite, Mother’s Day at my house, playing Tigris and Euphrates online, Monastery: The Board Game, Munchkin problems

May 15, 2008 in BOARD GAMES, CATHOLICISM, FAMILY, MY WEEK, SPONSORS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEO GAMES

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I haven’t heard anything yet about getting back to work, but that’s mostly because I haven’t called in to see how things are going. I’m thinking of doing that sometime next week if I don’t heard anything from them.

Meanwhile, I checked my e-mail and I received an invite to go to a preview party, at Universal Studios, for the new Simpsons Ride this Friday. At least we get a small reward for having killed ourselves working on that thing. Can’t wait. I’ll let you know what I think.

FAMILY

For Mother’s Day, my family got together for dinner at our house. We ordered Tai food and pretty much talked and laughed a lot. One of our conversations was about the Indiana Jones movies. We then started talking about how silly and ridiculous Temple of Doom was. I got up and put the movie on, since I own the DVD. By the time we were done with dinner, we were all sitting around the TV watching the movie, making fun of how lame it was, and just having a great time watching it. It was a good fun evening.

BOARD GAMES/VIDEO GAMES

So I decided to go on Board Game Geek to play a game of Tigris & Euphrates using their Play-by-web version of the game on the site. I was doing fairly well for about five turns and then I just got my butt kicked. I ended the game tide for third place out of four people which isn’t very good but I had a blast. In fact, I had such a good time that I immediately joined two more games after the the last one was over.

Tigris & Euphrates is a game designed by Reiner Knizia and it’s by far, one of the most counterintuitive games you’ll ever learn. It’s fun and very very cut throat but it’s difficult to explain and learn. I played it against a free computer program and learned to play it using that before I bought it. It took me three games before I understood what I was doing and then it took me two more before I could even begin to figure out what strategies to use to even have a chance at winning. The first time I played it live, I discovered how crazy cut throat the game really was. The last time I played it was with my brother, his wife Deborah, and my wife Alesha. Alesha got mad at me during that game because I made a move that really messed her up big time. I haven’t played the game with her since. I didn’t really know she’d react that way. Now I’m playing that game online with complete strangers and were really beating each other up in the game and we’re fine with it. Go figure.

CATHOLICISM/BOARD GAMES

So I was reading up on some board game news at the Board game news website and I read a really interesting article about a new board game coming out, from Ragnar Brothers, called Monastery. It’s a 2-4 player game and it lasts 90 minutes. According to the article players:

…experience two days of monastic life. Within each day are three rounds of tile placement and scoring (divided between study and toil), three service rounds (Matins, Sext and Vespers), and a night round.

Wow, how cool is that? To win the game:

…players must collect the letters of the abbey’s motto ‘Libera Nos Quaesumus Ab Omnibus Malis Amen’. The letters become progressively more expensive and players must decide whether to buy letters or recruit extra monks.

As far as I can tell, with my ridiculously bad understanding of Latin, the motto means something like, ‘Liberate us so we could be completely free from evil, amen.’ (if I got this wrong, please feel free to correct me). Wow, religious Latin in my board game.

From the articles I’ve read so far on this game (one on Board game news and the other on BGG), it sounds really pretty darn cool. It looks like there is a lot to it and the theme of being a monk is remarkably well represented in the game:

You start the game with one monk in the Abbey, and monks move about to construct tiles, study, toil, use icons (in the advanced game), or pray. The plastic monk figures are designed to tip forward in prayer, which scores you the value of the tile and takes the monk out of service until it returns to the Abbey. Most of these activities score points for a player, and those points can retrieve letters or additional monks from the “letter grid.”

What other game can you think of where praying is a positive, point giving benefit? I hope it comes out in the U.S., I’d love to buy myself a copy.

MY WEEK

I’ve been fighting with the Munchkin all week, to get her to eat. I sit her down and feed her but she refuses to chew and swallow her food. She just packs the food in her cheeks like a hamster. I’ve tried tricking her by offering her yogurt or even a snow cone while she has food in her mouth, so she could swallow it, but she’s found a way to swallow the yogurt and ice without swallowing the actual food. It’s real frustrating. She only wants snacks treats and milk but not real food. It’s such a pain.
