Playing too much, sleeping too little

November 8, 2007 in ANSWERING COMMENTS, BOARD GAMES, MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS
So much for not working the rest of the week last week. I got put on storyboard revisions. I really don’t mind because I really want to do storyboards. It’s really fun for me. When I “board” I feel like I’m contributing to the creative process of the show, more so then when I’m doing layout. As a storyboard artist I get to come up with the first pass of what the show will actually look like by fleshing out the script into visual form. I take the first shot at making the gags work and I also get the first pass at coming up with new characters, props, and backgrounds. It’s really creative. Something that is sometimes lacking when I do layout. I’m having a lot of fun this week, Yay! Even though, doing storyboard revisions is just fixing shots that have been slightly changed. It’s still fun.

BOARDGAMES
Got to play board games this week again, woo HOO! My sister-in-law Deborah made us a yummy dinner at her apartment, while the Munchkin ran around and crawled all over me, not letting me eat. We talked for a while and had a good time, then we broke out a board game and started playing it. The game we played was The Settlers of Catan, which my brother had been wanting to play for a long time. It’s a really fun game and if you want an introduction to the new style of “designer” (designer’s name is on the box) board games, this is the game to get. I can’t recommend this game enough. It’s very a interactive game about building settlements and trading resources with the people around the table. Not only that, but it has a modular board which means that the board layout is different every time you play. The game plays in about an hour, maybe more, depending on how long people take to do their turn. Our game lasted about an hour and a half (I think maybe even two) because my brother kept taking so long to decide what to do in his turn. We had a really good time.

I also found out about a “Print and Play” civilizations game. I went to the site and downloaded the rules and the pdf of the cards you need to use to play. I then printed the rules and for the cards I printed them in card stock. Later, I cut the cards out with a paper cutter. I tried it out the next day. I drew a continent, broke it up into eight regions, put mountains in some and forests in others and began to play. It turned out to be a really fun game. It’s amazing. All you need is paper, pencil, rules and the cards, yet, the games is really fun and really deep. I recommend it. Best part of all, IT’S FREE! WOO HOO! If you like “Civ” games and you want to have a portable one, this one is a good one to have.

Tired after playing The Settlers of Catan

MY WEEK
Since we played the board game this weekend on a Sunday night, we got home around ten thirty. Usually we go to sleep around then because we wake up really early. It wouldn’t have been that big a deal except that my wife still had some work to do for her job the next day. I felt bad that she still needed to work so I stayed up with her in order to keep her company. I didn’t want to be asleep while she stayed awake. We both would have to wake up at four the next morning and I thought it would be unfair. She managed to finish her work at twelve thirty and we went to sleep then.

Four hours of sleep is just not enough. The next day was a nightmare. We were sooo tired all day. I’ve got to remember to make sure my wife has everything done before we do anything from now on. We felt terrible all of Monday. Driving was horrible and work was almost impossible. I’m very surprised I got as much done as I did. In any case, we got home that night and the only thing we wanted to do was go to sleep. We managed to crawl into be at nine o’clock even though I really meant to get into be at eight that night. Sweet, sweet sleep.

Vatican, The board game!

October 25, 2007 in ANSWERING COMMENTS, BOARD GAMES, MY WEB COMIC, MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, Traditional Catholics

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Looks like we’re beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel on show 8. All the scenes have been handed out and everyone that finished the scenes they are working on, help others finish the scenes that they haven’t got to yet. I ended up doing exactly that this week. The scene I got is really fun and very funny (or at least I hope it will be after I’m done with it). It’s one of the last scenes of the show and I’m having a good time being silly with Bart and Homer in the kitchen.

MY WEEK

So I spent the beginning of the week working on my web comic (more on that below) and before I knew it, it was almost time to post my blog and I hadn’t even started writing or drawing anything for it. I’m almost always thinking about what I should write on it and always trying to find something worth writing about. That way whoever reads it will at least, hopefully, be entertained. I know sometimes I fail miserably but I try. Well this time I procrastinated a bit too long because I got so caught up in the story I’m trying to write.

The thing that takes the most time about my blog is the drawing part. The drawings I post every week take, at the very least, an hour to do and that is mostly because of the coloring process. The more characters in the drawing, the longer it takes to color. Once I have a drawing done though, the rest is pretty easy. I just type.

Sometimes I get an idea for the drawing before I start typing and sometimes after. Well this time I knew what I was going to write about. This weekend my cousin, my wife, my wife’s best friend and I played a game of Nexus Ops. Nexus Ops is a light science fiction wargame that plays a little like Axis and Allies, a little like The Settlers of Catan and a little like Starcraft the video game. I lost the game miserably and my wife didn’t like it much. Although my cousin loved it but that’s only because he won.

Well, anyway, I was going to write about that and then draw a picture of my cousin on top of the table, kicking board games pieces everywhere, rubbing it in our faces that he won (which he practically did) while we sit by and look stupidly up at him. Well, the thing is, lately I’ve just been drawing the blog drawings on a piece of paper, I scan them in, and I then color and letter them. It’s faster for me that way. If I use the Wacom tablet to draw directly on the computer I find it takes me longer to do. Usually I scan the drawing in at work. This time I didn’t get a chance to draw anything anywhere. My scanner at home is still packed up somewhere, my desktop isn’t working correctly and I just don’t have the time to take care of all these things right now. I was able to go home at a normal time this week. I thought I’d take advantage of the situation and draw the blog drawing at home but since I wasn’t going to be able to scan it in at home, that presented a problem. I didn’t want to stick around at work because I wanted to go home so badly so I thought I’d try drawing directly into the computer again. This time, though, I was going to try something new. I was going to paint the drawing. I thought that maybe, if I used shapes of color instead of lines I could actually get a more accurate and controlled drawing. Since it usually takes me a long time to color the drawings anyway I’d be losing a step of the process.

So I set out to execute my plan once I got home and low and behold it seemed to be working. I was trying to invent for myself the process as I went so it was taking me a bit longer to do it but I was doing it. I was getting really into it. While I was doing this, my wife called on the phone (she hadn’t come home yet) and I spoke to her for a bit. Afterwards I went back to the computer and began working on the drawing again.

Then, that’s when it happened… Photoshop froze on me a second and then crashed. This usually isn’t a big deal except that I had been so caught up in trying to invent for myself a new method of working on Photoshop that I hadn’t even saved the drawing I was working on at all. Not even once. In other words. I lost all my work. I was crushed. I didn’t want to start over. Emotionally I didn’t have it in me anymore. I went on Facebook and put a sad face “how I’m feeling” icon there and sat there staring at the computer. I didn’t do anything else on my blog for the rest of the day.

Next day, when I got into work, I used pencil and paper and drew this instead:

Photoshop crashed on me and I lost my drawing

At least I got a drawing done.

MY WEB COMIC

So the story I was trying to write went bye bye. No matter what I did I couldn’t make it work. It was mostly because the story lost focus. It didn’t have a central theme. It didn’t have a point. Every time I tried to give it a point, it became something else. It just wasn’t the story I set out to write. So instead of fighting with the story and trying to force it to go where I wanted it to go, I thought that maybe I’ll go in the direction that these themes took the story. This actually worked a lot better. I’ve actually got a beginning, middle and end to the thing written out in a rough outline. I told the story to my wife and she really likes it, except for the final act climax which I fully admit is really cheesy and it needs work. That’s okay because what I have of this story is a whole lot more than I had with the other story.

I’m actually very excited about it now, even though it wasn’t what I wanted to write. I was trying to write a story about a fourteen year old boy named Joseph before. Now I’m writing about a man named Guy. The stories have the same “inciting incident”, namely the inheritance of money, both stories take place in the modern world and both stories even have a dragon in them yet they couldn’t be more different. If I can make the other story work I’ll still do it but for now I’ll stick to the one that’s working for me.

As soon as I can figure out a really good non cheesy climax to the story, I’ll be ready to start writing.

BOARD GAMES

So I’m not going to write about the game of Nexus Ops I played this weekend because I’ve already mentioned it above. Instead I’m going to call attention to a comment that was left under my About Me page. Imagine my surprise when I read this:

Dear Luis,
Very interesting and thoughtful blog. If you are interested in Catholicism and boardgames you might appreciate “Vatican” the boardgame I designed. It has been selling worldwide and we have gotten very favorable comments

Sincerely,
Stephen Haliczer Ph.D.
Distinguished Research Professor
Product Designer
The College of DuPage Press

First I’d like to thank Stephen Haliczer Ph.D. for bringing the game to my attention. I appreciate it greatly.

So I checked out the game’s site and read about the game. I also tried reading about it on Board Game Geek (BGG) to see if I could learn a bit more. I found a small forum about the game there where people got a chance to ask Dr. Haliczer questions about the game. When asked how the game is played and how competitive it was Dr. Haliczer answered this:

Dear Doug,

Thank you for your interest. I designed “Vatican” primarily as a simulation/game in order to give players an experience of the process whereby a pope is elected. It is based on a deep study of the careers of the most important cardinals especially those who are considered “papabile” that is those who are considered papal material. Of course this is only a minority of the 115 voting cardinals. That being the case, the simulation/game had to bring the players through the process whereby cardinals gain the requisite influence to become prominent. This is essentially the first part of the game: Life and Career especially the acquisition of key offices. Some offices are more valuable than others hence a competition to aquire the most valuable offices. At the end of phase I all players have acquired the minimum number of offices that makes them “papabile” but they have different scores.

The second part of the game takes place after the pope dies (Papacy Ends cards) and takes players through the critical period between his death and the opening of the conclave where his successor is elected. Here the players must make a series of critical choices. As in real life during this period they must take positions on a variety of issues confronting the church and must guess which positions would prove the most attractive to the other voting cardinals. Players compete to figure out which positions would be most attractive but this is not always easy.

The third part of the game is the conclave itself. This is designed to be brief with just a few votes-as in reality. The last conclave was decided by only 3-4 votes in two days.

A broader and more general answer to the question of competition is as follows: You cannot in real life plan to become pope. There are too many chance factors and variables that you cannot control. Age would be an excellent example. A cardinal of 58 might be very attractive at a certain period of time. The previous pope might have been too old and died very quickly after election so the cardinals would be inclined to vote for someone young. On the other hand, if you were 58 after a pope had reigned for 25 years, your age would count against you since the cardinals would not want such a long serving pope again so soon.

As a designer of a simulation/game, I could not build in elements of competition that would distort reality. I had to build in the chance factors that really impact the election.

I hope that this discussion was helpful and gave you some insight into my thought processes.

The game must be ordered online and will probably not be in stores for some time-but shipping is free.

Thanks again,
Stephen Haliczer

This sounds really interesting. Unfortunately, when asked about the “roll and move” mechanic (roll the dice, move the number of spaces on the dice) of the game Dr. Haliczer was silent. The game sounds great but I’m iffy about the game being a “roll and move game.” Paul Sauberer asked exactly the question I wanted answered at BGG:

Does the game primarily consist of rolling the dice, moving a marker, perhaps drawing an event card, and then seeing what happens from that? Or do the players direct where their pieces go and what actions they take and then see how those choices determine how likely they are to eventually be elected pope?

I wish there were more reviews of this game at the official site (there are only two). BGG has no reviews of the game at all. I’m very cautious of the board games I buy and I like to read as much about the game as I can before I spend any money on them to make sure I would really like them. Sometimes I even find free digital versions of games online and decide from playing them, if I want to buy them.

I’d be more likely to buy this game if I could read the rules for it or at least see a sample of play. Never the less I’ve put it on my BGG Wishlist. If “roll and move” mechanics are not a big deal to you, then maybe you ought to get it. If you do, tell me what you think of it. I’m really interested.

ANSWERING COMMENTS

T Melnick, thank you for sharing your position on the comments section of “What in the world is a ‘traditional Catholic’?“. I just wish to clarify something you said. In the post you wrote:

I am a traditional Catholic, and there are many more groups and views than the Society of St. Pius X. For me, the change in the Ordination Rite of Bishops which no longer gives them the power to ordain priests, the unscriptural change in the words of consecration, and the promotion of false ecumenism (JPII having worshipped with every religion on the face of the earth, which is forbidden by Church Law and Holy Scripture, making him an apostate from the Church founded by Jesus Christ) were the main clinchers.

What you wrote above is basically what the Society of St. Pius X also says on their site. So my question is, what do you think of the Society?

Accidents and deadlines

October 11, 2007 in ANSWERING COMMENTS, MY WEB COMIC, MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I took Monday off this week for reasons I explain below. This put me behind. This is our last week to ship the show. It doesn’t look good at all. I think we’re gonna be late with it. I managed to finish what I had Tuesday morning and I was given more things to do. Since we only have this week to finish, every scene we get this week feels like a great burden. Mostly because you know it has to be done by the end of the week. It’s worse when the revision is a new scene you have to begin from scratch. Turns out, fifty percent of Act III is brand new that way. To make matters worse, one day I needed Lance (the Director) to approve some shots I’d set up and he wasn’t there because he was at Fox doing a DVD commentary. That stuff really gets in the way sometimes.

I worked twelve hours Tuesday, Thursday, and on Friday I will do the same. I hope that will help me get things done.

Simpsons scenes are a heavy burden

MY WEEK

My pregnant wife was in a car accident this Sunday. It wasn’t a very happy day. She was at the hospital getting checked out during the whole day. I was taking care of our daughter that day so she wasn’t in the car. My wife was found to be okay at the hospital and the baby in her womb was okay too. She was released around five o’clock PM. She’s been sore since.

On Monday she and I took the day off work in order to take care of the car which was in a tow truck lot in LA. A very insecure one as we found out to our dismay. Some one stole my wife’s iPod from the car. We took the babies things from the car and left it so that the insurance could take care of taking it to a mechanic. We then had to go get a rental car. If they find that the other person is at fault (which she is) we won’t have to pay for the rental.

Wednesday we found out that car was totaled. There is no way to fix it. We really don’t have the money to be buying a new car. Well…I suppose we do. We have some ’emergency’ money saved up in case things like this happen but of course that would mean that the money would no longer be there after we use it and it’s going to be really difficult to replace it. My wife and I aren’t as worried as maybe we should be. God’s Will be done. If he wants to make things easier, so much the better. I’m sure he has a plan, we just need to wait and see what it is. I’ve learned from experience that it’s times like these that we really grow.

But a person needs new experiences. They draw something deep inside, allowing them to grow. Without change, something sleeps inside us and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken.

Duke Leto Atreides (Dune the movie)

We are very thankful to God that the accident, though bad, was not worse. We are very inconvenienced by it but I’d rather be inconvenienced than be grieving, for my wife or my unborn son.

ANSWERING COMMENTS

Boy, I received a lot of comments for my last post. I’m glad everyone liked the drawing. It was great seeing you all.

Greg, I was really hoping to get the reaction from you that I got. It’s funny but I really did feel like that when we greeted. That’s were the idea came from.

Rob, I listened to your last two podcasts. Sounds like you had one heck of a good time at the Expo. It’s great to hear your perspective on the Expo. I liked the chats you had with the different podcasters you met. Thanks for mentioning me. Tell your wife that she doesn’t need to like The Simpsons. I’m not offended. (SOB!)

Scott, I remember you. Yes, you were one of the first people who said something to me when I showed up. Thanks for the link to the picture. Sorry I forgot to draw you. I don’t always remember everyone or everything.

Capt. Jeff, Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you about the shirt idea. I will as soon as I can. I’ve actually gotten another one since, so now I have two ideas.

Fr. Jay, I’ve been listening to your podcast. It’s great. I highly recommend people to go listen to it.

Sr. Anne, Thank you for the compliment. Rome was so cool. I’m jealous that you got to live there for a while. I’m glad it brought you memories of the place. Boy was that rush hour train ride crazy though. WOW!

Your blog rocks!

I love the book reviews video from Sr. Julia you put up on your site! It’s great for people looking for Catholic books to read.

Dr. Paul Camarata, I’m glad you like the Italy trip journal. Wow, that’s so cool that you’ll be going back next summer. Wish I had the time and money to go back (sigh). Dude, that guy at the Coliseum was super annoying. He almost ruined it for me.

Bill, I’m going to have to wait a week more before answering your question. I know the answer to the question but I would need to double check all my sources just to be accurate. I want to be fair and just in representing “traditionalist’s” concerns.

MY WEB COMIC

Went to watch a movie Saturday night that made me rethink my webcomic story. I’ve decided to throw out everything I’ve written so far and start over. There’s going to be a major change in the direction I was going with the story. I’m going to be getting rid of some characters and I’m going to be making up new ones. I’m also gonna be changing the main character’s motivation. It’s a big pain. Hopefully it will come together much better with these changes. I showed my wife act I and II of my story as it was written and she said it stunk. It had a lot of problems so that means back to the drawing board.

Stomach Flus and Podcast Expos

October 4, 2007 in ANSWERING COMMENTS, MY WEEK, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Worked overtime Monday and Tuesday. Right now, it looks like we might have a chance of finishing on time. MAYBE. We need to work harder though.

I’ve also been trying to catch up on Podcasts at work recently.

I’ve been putting Smallville DVDs into my laptop while I work too. I don’t really know why. They sometimes distract me. I like that show though.

Wednesday, Paul, Tommy and I went to buy comics at lunch.

Work is tiring me out. I’m so sleepy all the time.

MY WEEK

Got a 24 hour stomach flu this weekend. It really came out of no where and hit all three of us pretty hard. It first hit the Munchkin a day before but it quickly turned and hit us. Luckily, the Munchkin didn’t get it as bad as we did. My wife and I were out for a whole day. Since I was the only one of the two of us that could stand, I had to take care of the Munchkin who wasn’t even feeling bad anymore by the time we got sick. I also had a few errands to do, so I didn’t get to rest as much as I should have. Lucky for us, my mom came and took care of us all that day. My wife was in really bad shape that morning. If I haven’t mentioned this before, she’s four months pregnant. The fact that she was doing so bad got me pretty worried. By the end of the day she was in a lot better shape though. Yay.

PODCASTS

The Podcast Media expo happened this weekend. I went down to the Expo to see the SQPN crew because I had some things I wanted to give them. Of course, I had the stomach flu so this meant I could only stay for a little while or else I would pass out. This was a real bummer because besides Fr. Roderick, and Greg and Jennifer Willits (hrmmm, Grennifer Willits?), there were a lot of other podcasters and SQPN listeners I wanted to talk to and I barely got a chance to say “hi” to them. Tupelos Catholic, Rob Williams was one, (Sorry dude, I so wanted to talk to you, I wanted to tell you I liked your podcast), and Capt. Jeff too. I just said a few things to him and that was that which sucked because I had a t-shirt idea I wanted to talk to him about. I didn’t get a chance for anything. I felt so cheated. I was looking forward to the expo for a while because I knew it would be the only chance I would get to see everyone. It stinks because the next expo will be in Las Vegas. It’s a four hour drive but I don’t think I’ll be able to make it. Not only that but Greg invited us to a Mass that Fr. Roderick was going to co-celebrate and my wife and I were too sick to go to it. A was so bummed.

Thank you Albert – for giving me your definition of a traditional Catholic. I’m assuming that you are one. If I could just make a friendly subjection though. It might be a good idea to proofread your comments and check for spelling errors before publishing them. Just a thought.

The Incident Concluded

September 20, 2007 in MY WEB COMIC, MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMSPSONS NEWS

Revisions…that’s it. Nothing exciting.

MY WEEK

The Incident (concluded from last week’s blog post)

So I ran out of the room and I quickly put on my shoes in order to go outside. I opened the screen door and walked outside. The lightning flashed again and I started counting, hoping I had gotten it wrong and the storm was going away. No such luck. The sky was cloudy and they were moving my way. I surveyed my surroundings. I needed to know what the heck I was going to do and I needed to do it quick. There was a dining room table on the lawn and it was WAY to heavy for me to move. Besides, there was no space inside the house for it. Neither was there space for the large dresser sitting in the walkway next to the lawn. There were a bunch of drawers on a wooden futon that went with the dresser as well as two small, dressers that had two drawers each. It was okay if the wooden futon got wet because I knew it was gonna go in the backyard in the new house. The drawers and the small dressers needed to be dry though. There were also a bunch of chairs that went with the dining room table over to one side. I looked at the gazebo tent doubted whether it would really keep the furniture that was there dry. It felt too open to me and water would definitely get to the furniture through the bottom as it ran to lower ground.

I felt overwhelmed. My mind was racing and the storm was getting closer. The first thing I thought of was the chairs. I could at least save them. I picked them up and I took the six of them inside as fast as I could. I put some in the garage, (which was full of my parents things and left pretty much no space for anything else). I put some chairs in the living room (which left no convenient walking space between the TV room and the living room). I then ran back outside, looked around and quickly decided that the drawers where next. There were nine of them. I put some inside the garage on top of the chairs and some in the gazebo tent. I hoped that it was a good idea to leave the drawers in the tent. Before I dealt with the last of the drawers though, I started closing the tent as best as I could in order to prevent water from coming in (there were openings on all four sides of the thing and I had to make sure they were closed as tight as they could be). As I was getting the last of the drawers, I started to feel the drops begin to fall.

“Oh no, oh no, not yet!” My heart began to sink. I hadn’t figured out what I was going to do with the rest of it yet. It was only sprinkling a little but it was enough to put me in a panic. I scanned the area, looking for the box of trash bags I had been using earlier that day and it was no where in sight.

“Just give me a few minutes God, just a few minutes!” I prayed as I ran inside the house frantically looking for the trash bags. I had a heck of time trying to find them. They were gone. I ran back outside to look for them and there they were, hiding behind the curtain of the gazebo tent. I grabbed them and started to take out the trash bags. I ran over to the dining room table and started to wipe the water off with my hands (as if that would actually do any good). Then I started to put the trash bags on top of the table. It was so wet already that the bag stuck to the top.

“Come on God, I don’t want you to turn off the water works. I just need a few more minutes so I could cover this stuff up.” It took me a few minutes to finish putting the trash bags on the table but it felt like forever. When I finally got done I went to the dresser and realized, to my relief, that it had stopped sprinkling. I looked up and discovered that (I’m not making this up) there was a small circle of open sky around the house while all around us it rained.

“Thank you, thank you,” I prayed, “I’ll finished this quickly.” I then tried wiping the dresser top off as best as I could and began putting the trash bags on it. The wind began to blow and since it was no longer sprinkling there was nothing that would make the bags stick to one another. I ran around looking for the packaging tape I knew was around the area, located it and began to tape the bags together as I put them on the dresser. Once done, I put the bags on the small dressers as well. I didn’t know how much time I would have before it began to sprinkle again. The small hole in the clouds was slowly moving across and the sky. It wouldn’t be long before it began to rain again. So far I had managed to cover everything I needed to cover but it was wet under the trash bags and that wasn’t good. I started taking the trash bags off the table in order to dry it with some paper towels. Afterwards I put new trash bags on it and taped them together. I did the same with the big and small dressers. While I was doing this I had gotten to the point were the adrenaline I had earlier was beginning to ware off. I just wanted to go to sleep and I was getting really grouchy. As I looked up at the sky, I began to see stars. It looked like the worst had passed. It almost felt like what I was doing was no longer needed. I found out later that it wasn’t. Looking around I became satisfied that what I’d done was the best I could do under the circumstances. At this point I just wanted to go to sleep. I headed back upstairs, damp and drained of all energy. I crawled back into bed and accidentally, woke Alesha up.

“I was outside just now. There was a lightning storm and I went down to cover up the furniture as it rained.” I told Alesha as I laid down on the bed exhausted.

“Oh no,” she said groggily and went back to sleep.

During the storm

MY WEB COMIC

My web comic is coming along nicely. I had a small talk with a friend of mine and Alesha and through that conversation I managed to solve some story problems I was having. Act I and II are finished and now I’m working on Act III. Act IV is the real tricky one and it’s the one that needs the most work. I don’t often have enough time to work on the story and the blog at the same time. I often have to choose one over the other. I tend to choose the blog only because it has a more immediate deadline.

QUESTION

I wanted to know if you could do me the favor of letting me know why you read my blog. I know I haven’t written anything on Catholicism or philosophy but that’s only because I haven’t quite found the right way to write about them yet without sounding like I’m ranting. If you want to know what it sounds like when I write about this stuff, I recommend you go and read a comment I put up a while ago on the Daily Breakfast site under the Creation and Evolution episode comments (mine is the last comment. Click on the words “Creation and Evolution” to link to the post). If you don’t want to know what it sounds like, don’t bother.

If the Catholicism and Philosophy thing isn’t something you want me to write about, then what is? Please let me know. It would really help me to know what I’m doing that you like and don’t like.

Moving Stinks!

September 13, 2007 in MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Work is going really slow. I worked on the same scene all week last week and kept on working on it Monday and Tuesday and most of Wednesday. It was really complicated and it had a big crowd. It was sooo annoying.

Reply to Bill Ho’s comment from “Drowning in stuff“ article. (Bill is an old friend of mine from the Rowland Days [for Rowland reference, see ‘In the shadow of greatness‘] and he worked on the Simpson’s show for a few seasons. He now has his own business with his best friend Raul Aguirre [who is an ex-Disney animator]. They recently wrote boarded and directed a short cartoon for Nickelodeon. You can check out their site at www.illegalaliensproductions.com. Thanks for commenting Bill.)

I agree with Bill that if the writers didn’t change things, our jobs would be shorter and we’d probably have hiatus much sooner. Funny that Bill mentioned that because Tommy Tejeda and I had a very similar conversation one night a few weeks ago. Tommy came to the same conclusion. It’s a very good way of looking at revisions.

Now I’ll respond to Bill’s comment about the Cintiqs. Bill wrote regarding my friend and co worker Paul Wee’s blog article. Paul was “Character Layout Lead” on the Simpsons Movie (which meant he was in charge of all Character Layout on the movie). If you read his article he writes that he no longer has his Cintiq anymore. Actually the Cintiqs are still being used by the studio. They took Paul’s away because he went back to regular layout like me, therefore he no longer needed the Cintiq. There is talk that perhaps next season we might start using the Cintiqs for layout. I hope this happens, it would make life much easier. Of course this would mean re-tooling how we do the shows. We’ve been doing the show the same way for about twenty four years. It could potentially become a huge mess to try to go digital. Especially since many of the artists don’t know how to use Photoshop. Yikes!

MY WEEK

The “incident” happened. I’ll write about it in a few paragraphs.

We finally moved in to our new place. I don’t even know how to begin telling you what a pain it has been. The place we bought is brand new. It was still in construction last month. The problems began after the construction crew didn’t meet the Aug. 15 deadline. There was also lender hassles, to deal with as well as bad money management on the part of the Title Company. Since the construction was late we weren’t allowed to get our keys. We had told the landlord of my apartment that we would be moved by the 30th. Turns out they weren’t going to give us the keys till the week after. Meanwhile the landlord had already rented the apartment so we needed to get out. Not only that but I was gambling on having the keys quickly because I only had four days of unboxed clothes.

We ended up moving twice. We move once from the apartment to my parents house and then when we finally go the keys, we moved into our house from my parents house. It really sucked. The move from the apartment to my parents was horrible. The truck we had gotten was not big enough but I had made the mistake of not reserving a truck sooner so I got what they had. Also, there were so many little odds and ends in the apartment that it really was more of a hassle than in should have been.

Not everyone that told us they would help could show up and the people that DID show up, showed up late. To make matters worse, my wife had made an appointment to have the cleaners come in and do a vacancy cleaning on the same day we were moving. This meant we had a deadline! There was no way to pack the truck by the time the cleaners would be there so we just moved everything out in front of the apartment just to have the place vacated. We packed the truck as best we could, dropped the stuff off at my parents, which meant unloading the truck, then we came back to get the rest. I had started the loading of the truck at 9:00am (by myself) and we didn’t finish until 9:00 pm. We were really stressed and tired by the time we finished. It was horrible.

The next morning I unloaded the truck (because we were too tired the night before to do it) mostly by myself. Then I drove it to Laguna beach, which is an hour and a half away, to drop off a really heavy entertainment center, we didn’t need, at a friends house. From there I drove to Sunland, which was an hour away, to get a table and some furniture from an aunt. Then I drove back to my parent’s house, forty five minutes away. Unloading the entertainment center was, by far, the worst of it. The day this happened, I had no energy left at all from the day before and still, I did these things.

Then, the incident happened. Thing is, my parents house didn’t have enough room for all our stuff. We had to leave all our furniture outside in the backyard. My parents don’t really have much of an overhanging roof in the backyard. In fact, they don’t have one at all. They bought a tent like portable gazebo thing and that’s what they have as a roof. Well, it really wasn’t a big deal that my furniture was in the backyard. My dad turned off the sprinklers so everything was fine. Dad was a little concerned about the furniture because he heard on the news that it might rain but the weather here had been hitting 105 F so that really wasn’t a realistic concern.

We were staying at our parents waiting for the house people to give us the keys. One night having gone to bed, a sound woke me up. At first I wasn’t sure I heard right, so I just listened. There it was again. I couldn’t believe my ears. I sat up and looked out the window. Sure enough, a flash of light followed by thunder. It was a thunder storm but it had not hit us yet. I started counting the flashes and thunder and to my horror, it was getting closer. I looked at the time. It was 2:00am. I looked down, out the window were I could see the furniture. Most of it was under the gazebo thing but not all of it. The furniture I went to get from my aunt’s house was too big to put under the gazebo and it wasn’t covered up. It was going to get ruined and we needed that furniture. I had to do something. The storm was getting closer and I didn’t have much time before it got to us (unless I was wrong and it had already started to rain). I got out of bed and ran outside.

To be Continued…

Working Hard

August 23, 2007 in MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

The madness is over. We actually managed to pull it off. We finished the Animatic for show 8#. An Animatic is a pencil and paper version of what the show will look and sound like before it gets cleaned up and colored.. The Animatic is shown to the writers and producers and they make changes according to what they see is working or not working.

We managed to finish it. We ended up more than doubling our crew to do it and they even had to move the deadline over one more day because the show was just too big. I managed to finish what I had but only with help from some of my co-workers. I had thirteen scenes to do by Wednesday at 2:00 pm. I gave away six of them which helped out a lot. I ended up actually finishing early so I helped some else finish their scenes. I was working late every night and I had no time to do anything. I promised people drawings and I haven’t even had time to get around to them. It was crazy. I worked a little during the weekend too, but only two hours because I needed to be at home to help pack.

What a relief it is to finish. The thing about these Animatics is that we work really hard on scenes and sometimes the jokes don’t work, even though it’s a sequence you worked long, hard hours on and they just get cut. It’s heart breaking but that’s what they pay us for. I hope the Animatic screening goes okay because if it doesn’t, there will be a lot of changes. That means, doing new scenes instead of finessing what we already worked hard to get right the first time.

Now that I have time I might actually be able to start drawing for myself again…although right now drawing is the last thing I want to do.

Actually, there is a possibility that there might be another show that’s in trouble and we will need to help them out. When one show is behind, it tends to cause a snowball effect. I hope that doesn’t happen. I’m really tired.

A good rest after a tough couple of days

MY WEEK

So I’ve gotten a lot of responses about the Italy diary. I’ve decided to put it up in black and white. If I color it, it will be just for my personal satisfaction because doing that will take a while. In any case, I’ll put it up on its own page when I get the chance (and after I check it for typos). I will let everyone know when I do. I’d like to thank everyone who commented about it.

I would also like to thank, everyone that “Dugg” me. I have four Diggs now! Woo hoo! Techdiva left a review at Digg.com. Maybe she’s the only one that’s “Dugg” me because I can’t seem to find anyone else’s review. Anyway, if anyone else “Dugg” me, thank you and I’d like to thank Techdiva for leaving a review. Yay!

House buying and birthdays

August 10, 2007 in FAMILY, MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Well, I’m back in Lance’s crew again. So is everyone else that went on retakes. I’ve been trying to crank out my scenes but I don’t feel like I’m getting enough done. Not only that but house buying stuff got in the way of work today and I spent most of my Thursday out of the office. I ended up coming in around 5 o’clock to at least put in 2 hours and I have to stay late Friday plus come in on Saturday. Dang it! I just need one week when I can just do my job without interruption.

On a lighter note, most of us in the crew that went to Comic Con, began showing off our “loot”. It’s fun to see what other people picked up at the Con. It also suck when you know what you missed out on. Luckily many of the things that I didn’t get I can get in other places. I just have to save up little bits of my money to get them.

Today, apparently, there was a company meeting at the studio were they welcomed the King of the Hill crew to the studio. King of the Hill is part of our company and three years ago, when we moved to the new studio in Burbank (Our old studio was in North Hollywood), the King of the Hill crew didn’t come along because the show was canceled at the time. When it was picked up again they began production at the North Hollywood studio. This week they officially moved in to the Burbank studio and are using the space that the Simpsons Movie was using. I didn’t go to the meeting because I wasn’t even at work this morning due to the above mentioned house buying thing. Oh, and just thought I’d mention that my dad works on King of the Hill drawing Backgrounds. Welcome to the new studio Pop!

FAMILY

Today, (Thursday 9th) is my baby daughter’s birthday. She is 1 year old. She spent her day at Abuelita’s (‘grandma’ in Spanish) house and had fun with her tios (aunts and uncles in Spanish). She ate her first cupcake. I’m told that after taking a large bite out of it she turned up to everyone around her with a face full of frosting and said, “Mmmmm.” I wasn’t there because I went into work as stated above. I’m so angry at that house buying stuff that really screwed up the day.

The Munchkin is such a cutie pie. Here’s a picture of her with my wife:

My wife with the Munchkin

She looks NOTHING like me (thank God!). The only thing she got from me is my hair (not seen in this picture). And my brilliant mind, of course. 🙂

MY WEEK

Today is also my friend Amiee’s birthday. I was going to draw a silly picture of me doing something stupid like I usually do but I decided to draw Amiee a picture for her birthday instead. Her online blog/diary said jokingly that she wanted one of Gankutsuou. I only have time during the week to draw one picture so I drew it instead of what I was going to do. Here it is. I wish it was better drawn but…

Gankutsuo

It’s a drawing of Gankutusou. It’s a Japanese Cartoon (anime) that re-imagines the story of The Count of Monte Cristo (one of my favorite books) and puts it in a weird Sci Fi setting. It’s really interesting. The Count (Gankutusou) comes across as this weird vampiric alien from another galaxy. The art direction in the cartoon is really strange as well. It’s not for everyone but I like it and so does Amiee. Happy Birthday Amiee!

QUESTION

I have a question for you. I’m gonna put a little illustrated diary I made of a trip to Rome that my wife and I took in 2005. I showed it to a few people and they thought it was funny so I thought I’d put it up on the site. It was hand written but my handwriting is so bad, I went back and put in clean type instead. I’m going to create a page just for it on this blog. The original is in black and white but I thought since I’m going to put it up on the site, I should color it. Here is a sample of what page 5 of the diary looks like, without color:

Italy Diary Page 4

(By the way, you can click on some of these images to make them bigger)

My question is:

Would you like me to put the diary up in black and white right away so you can read it, OR do you want me to wait until it’s all colored?

If I put it up in black and white, I will replace the black and white pages with the colored versions as I finish coloring them.

Please let me know what you’d like. Thank you.

I also have a store. Click Here and check it out.

And while you’re at it, please Digg me too.

Writing this blog is almost a part time job for me. Tips are most welcome.

The Simpsons Movie

July 27, 2007 in Interviews, MY WEEK, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

In my first post ever, I mentioned Simpson parties. Well I went to both so now I can tell you about them. The first one was a wrap party and in took place at the Fox studio lot. There is a large grassy area in the lot next to the cafeteria and the Fox store inside the lot. That’s were the party took place. It was a big barbecue party. Hamburgers, roast beef and barbecue chicken sandwiches were served. There was liquor and Buzz Cola (which tastes like coke) to be drunk and for dessert, chocolate fruit fondue. Or if you preferred there was also an ice cream bin you could go get ice cream from. Afterwards, those of us who had signed in for the nine o’clock screening of the movie, went into one of the lot theaters and watched it. Matt Groening and David Silverman were there greeting people in line. Before the movie played Matt, David, and James L. Brooks introduced the movie and thanked us for our work. It was really nice of them to do that. After the Movie was over my wife and I, on the way to our car, met up with David Silverman shook his hand and complimented him on the great job he did. We left very happy.

The second party was something all together different. It turned out that it was the PREMIER PARTY. First, we went to the Premier screening. Red carpet and all (Well, actually, it was a yellow carpet. No joke). There was a band that played every time an celebrity showed up and they would get interviewed on TV. It was exciting. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go to a movie premier again, so I tried to enjoy it as much as I could. We met up with the few friends of mine that were invited also and went into the theater. There were two theaters because there wasn’t going to be enough space in one. There was a balcony in ours. Most of the bottom half of the theater was reserved for “more important people”. We had to choose to either get bad seats in the front or the sides on the first floor or sit in the balcony. We chose to sit in the front on the first floor because one of my friends went to a movie one time, sat in the balcony instead of in the first floor and behind the place they would have sat in, sat Jet Li. My friend didn’t want that to happen again. Turns out that in the row behind us sat Marisa Tomei. We didn’t really see too many actors in the theater though. We looked. We sat around talking for an hour and a half before the movie began and we watched it again.Yellow Carpet Premier

After the movie was over, we went to the “after party”. It was bigger than the usual TV premier parties we’ve been to. It was an open air party. There was food, and drinks (of course), but there was also FREE SQUISHIES (Yum). The Squishies were served in cups with different drawing of the characters on each. Apparently Mark Hamill was at the party. I friend told me, he saw him start stacking up all the different cups and walk off with some. Mark Hamill is as big a geek as WE ARE! I heard there were quite a few celebrities there. I saw Kevin Smith and his wife at the party but I didn’t really see anyone else. There were too many people. Besides food, there were places were you could get your picture taken with the Simpsons. There was a place were they superimposed your picture in a scene from the movie and there was a place were you could take your picture on a life sized couch where life size sculptures of the family sat. There was also a place were you could make a wax mold of your hand holding a rubber pink Simpsons donut. We stood in line for that for about thirty minutes before we gave it up. The line was barely moving. There were girls in tight yellow jumpsuits that hoola hooped around the party as well as women in suits playing saxophones. There were also four domes at the party. Each dome had a theme. One was the ice cream dome, another was a dance dome, the third was a video game dome (with X-box 360s), and the last dome was the exit. The DJ played music all night while behind him, on three giant round disks, drawings of the Simpsons were projected. In the center disk there was a projection of a giant donut. Alesha and I had a good time. We ended up getting home about twelve thirty that night. I overslept and got in late to work the next day. DOH!

How did we like the movie you ask? I loved it. I’m not just saying that because I worked on it. I really liked it. The consensus at the studio is that the movie is really good. We are all very happy with it. It’s very exciting. I can’t wait for you to see it, so you could let me know what you think. A word of warning. The movie is not for kids. There are scenes in the movie which may not be suitable for younger audiences. I knew a lot of the jokes already, and I still laughed my head off. Seeing them in context makes all the difference.

MY WEEK

Sorry about how long it took for this article to be posted. I’ve had a very busy week. I went to Comic Con so I lost the day I usually reserve to write on the blog. More on the Comic Con next post.

PODCASTS Interviews

I got interviewed on the Catholic Insider a while ago and my interview has just now been put up. To paraphrase Shannon who commented on my last article, “brings back memories”. The interview turned out pretty cool but I sure do mumble. Who am I, Popeye?!

A few months after that interview I was pulled back into the movie and worked for three months on it. We worked everyday on it, including weekends.

I think some of the things I said, may need some amending. I’m not exactly sure when Brad Bird began on the show or if he had anything to do with the style of the show outside of refining Side Show Bob. Maybe someone out there know a little something more about it than I do. I also left out the fact that Wes Archer was also one of the first people to work on the Tracy Ullman shorts along with David Silverman. He worked on the show until he left to become head director on King of the Hill.

The Calm Before the Storm

July 22, 2007 in FAMILY, MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Show #8 has begun. That’s the show I’m working on right now. Directed by Lance Kramer with Assistant Director (A.D.) Tommy Tejeda. Lance has been on the show forever. Long before I showed up. When I first started working on the show, Lance was a layout artist like myself. He’s a lot a fun to work with. I first worked under Lance when he was an A.D. for Director Bob Anderson. Lance is a huge Star Wars geek and Indiana Jones geek. He even named his dog Indiana. His side of the office has a bunch of little Star Wars figurines all over.

Tommy is from Argentina. He was also on the show when I first began working there. He wanted to try something new after working on the show for so long so he decided to try out for a position on the Superman Animated series at Warner Brothers. His artwork impressed Bruce Timm and he got hired. I forgot how long he was there, needless to say he ended up, not only working on the Superman cartoon but also on the new Batman animated show, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. All shows that I absolutely love! After the shows were over, he came back to The Simpsons and quickly became an A.D. after a short time doing Layout. Tommy is also a Star Wars geek.

Working with them is a blast. It’s fun talking with them because all we do is talk about geeky things.

We are just finishing Act I and next week I’ll begin working on my section of Act II. I’ll explain the process of making a Simpsons episode in a later post. Just thought you might like to know a little about one of the directing teams that make up the Simpsons crew.

MY WEEK

Just thought I’d get one more article in before next week. It’s going to be a really a crazy one. I spent most of Saturday on the computer checking the blog and working on downloading plugins for WordPress that I can’t seem to make work. I’m just computer stupid. I feel like the computer is mocking me sometimes.

Copyright Luis Escobar 2007 www.luisescobarblog.com

Sometimes I feel the computer is mocking me.

I’m really surprised at how much feedback I’ve gotten on just one post. Makes me happy.

I discovered that the WordPress website theme I was using wouldn’t let me modify it without recoding it, so I changed it. In other words, it didn’t have widgets. Problem was that all the other themes had messed up RSS feeds. So I just copied and pasted the RSS feed code from the last theme and I stuck it in this one. That helped.

FAMILY

It was my dad’s birthday yesterday and I forgot to call him. I’m a terrible son. Luckily I was able to wish him a happy birthday at a family get together that same night. HAPPY BIRTHDAY POP!

It was my father-in-laws birthday the day before, which I think is kinda funny.

I took The Munchkin for a walk today. “The Munchkin” is my pet name for my eleven month old daughter Elizabeth Haley. I took her for a walk so I could let my wife Alesha have some time to read the new Harry Potter book. (She got it this morning and as I type this she is almost done with it. SHEESH!) Our walk was very long. The Munchkin and I entered a DVD/Video game store I like to go to sometimes and came out with an eight dollar Teletubies DVD for her. We also went into a Borders books store and I saw a book about the art of ‘Surfs Up‘ (the Computer Generated (C.G.) movie about surfing penguins). I personally feel that, that movie was horribly over looked. I thought it was fantastic. The story was great, it was really funny, the documentary feel of the movie was unique, and the designs where incredible. I don’t know why more people didn’t see that movie. (Can you tell me why you didn’t see it?) Needless to say, I wanted to get the book, but I can’t because I’m saving my money for Comic Con. (Sigh) hopefully I’ll have some extra cash for next month.
