Three Reasons to Play “Star Realms” Deck Building Game.

August 14, 2014 in THE SIMPSONS NEWS

BOARD GAMES – Three Reasons to Play Star Realms Deck Building Game

Three Reasons to Play Star Realms Deck Building Game 05Star Realms is a deck building game that can be played on iOS, Android, and as a physical game over a tabletop. Today I’m going to give you the three reasons why the game is worth playing.

There are a lot of deck building games out there. A deck building game is a card game genre made popular by the card game Dominion.

Deck building games all share one common game mechanic. You start out with a very small deck of cards (about 10 cards or so) and throughout the game you acquire more cards using these starting cards, often from a community pool of cards in the center of the table, thereby “building your deck” as you play the game. This is done to achieve whatever the winning condition of the game is.

This general game mechanic has spawned multiple types of deck building games. One such game is Star Realms.

When Star Realms was published, it became a huge hit. So much so that, the demand out weighted the supplies. It is extremely difficult (as of the time of this writing) to get a tabletop copy of this game.

But that’s okay, if you really want to give it a try, there’s an Android app available and a iOS app as well.

I’ve played a lot of deck building games. I own five tabletop deck builders and have downloaded three other deck building game apps for my iOS device. I didn’t see why I should download, yet another deck builder.

What did this one have to offer that the other ones didn’t already do? But since this one was such a big hit, and since I heard an interview with the designer on the Little Metal Dog show podcast. I thought I’d give it a try.

I downloaded the Android app of the game and boy, am I glad I did. At first, when I played the game I didn’t see how the game was any different from another game app I own called Ascension Chronicle Of The Godslayer. It played almost exactly the same.

But the more I played it, the more I started to see why the game had become so popular.

Below I will give you the three reasons why you should pick up a copy.

(The Amazon links are affiliate links. Thanks for  your support)

It’s Inexpensive

First, as far as tabletop deck building games go, this one is by far the least expensive. For $15.00 you can pick up a copy and you’re ready to play the game against a friend. You only need the one game to play two players. That’s a lot of game for a very low price.

It’s one of the lowest priced deck builders on the market.

Not only that but the Android app is free.

To unlock the higher difficulty modes and all the bells and whistles of the full game, you need to spend $4.99. But if you simply want to, learn to play, try the game out, play against the easy computer AI, and play the first part of the Campaign mode, you can’t go wrong with free.

I’m assuming the iOS app also has the same model.

Even at $4.99, the game is worth the price.

Easy to Learn

Three Reasons to Play Star Realms Deck Building Game 01The game is very easy to pick up and play. The object of the game reduce your opponent’s life points (in game terms, his “authority”) to zero.

As with all deck building games, you start with a small deck of ten cards. You draw five as your starting hand of cards and with it you can either buy cards from the center of the table, attack your opponent’s life points, or do both.

Any cards you purchase go immediately to your discard pile. Once your turn is done, you discard all the cards you played AND the ones in your hand that you didn’t, into the discard pile. Then you draw another hand of five cards from your deck and wait for your next turn.

If you’re deck runs out of cards you shuffle your discard pile (which contains any new cards you bought) and you create your new deck from it.

Rinse repeat, until you opponent is out of the game. Simple.

I happen to own two other deck building game with almost the exact same simple game play as this one. The biggest difference between those games and this one is that, I get this game.

What I mean by this is, I get the way the combos in this game work. There something about the way the cards in this game work together that really makes sense to me.

It’s Deep

Three Reasons to Play Star Realms Deck Building Game 04The game has four factions. Each faction has a theme. One is all about attacking, one is about building currency and life points, one is about getting rid of cards, and one is about building a swarm of ships.

The trick to playing this game is to try to create a synergy of cards that work well together within the limited amount of random cards that are available to purchase.

The designer, who is a Magic the Gathering Hall of Fame inductee, likened the process to drafting Magic cards in a Magic the Gathering draft game.

I’ve only played Magic this way once but I have to say, it resembled that way of playing Magic, quite a bit.

The more you play the game, the more you understand each faction and how it plays. It gives so much replay value to the game knowing how all the cards work, and deciding what the best cards to get are at the right moments.

It’s really fun, and very challenging.

Final Thoughts

Three Reasons to Play Star Realms Deck Building Game 02This game is so worth getting. I didn’t realize how much fun I would have playing it.

It’s also very unique as a deck builder because most deck builders aren’t about directly attacking your opponents.

If you haven’t played a deck building game before, this once is an ideal introduction. It’s also a ton of fun to play.

If you’ve played Magic before and want to play something similar but without the collectible aspect, this is the game to get.

Give it a try.

ANIMATION/SUPERHEROES – Top Ten Superhero Animated TV Shows

Top Ten Superhero Animated TV ShowsSimpsons Quote:

Jono: Dad, can we go? I’ve watched all the DVDs in the Bentley.
Marth: Jono, what’s that in your hand?
Jono: Oh. Big surprise that you don’t know what this is. It’s only Everyman. The coolest comic book ever.
[Marth takes the comic book and reads through a few pages.]
Marth: What are his powers?
Jono: All of them.
Marth: That’s it! Our next big summer movie will be Everyman!
OWW Films Executive #4: Uh, Marth? Ginormous Pictures bought the rights to Everyman three weeks ago.
[Marth throws the comic onto the table in frustration.]
Marth: Damnit!

Hi, as you know, I love animated cartoons, and I love specifically superhero animated cartoons. And today, I’m going to be doing something different. Last time I showed you my top ten superhero animated movies. This week, I’m going to tell you my top ten superhero animated TV shows.

You can either watch the video or read the transcription below.  There are videos to promo spots and opening credits below if you want to get a taste of what the shows are like:

(Some of the links below are affiliate links.  Thanks for your support.)

How This Top Ten List is Set Up

All right. As I said, I’m going to start with my top ten. Now all of these shows are good, all of them.  You should watch all of these shows because they’re all fantastic, but the order is: replayability, as far as my personal replayability, whether or not I like to re-watch them over and over or not and put them back in and just sit there and watch them again and again. So, let’s get to it.

10. Batman Beyond

I don’t own a copy because I didn’t know how awesome it was until I started rewatching all the shows on Netflix, and that is Batman Beyond. Batman Beyond, what a great show.

Batman as cyberpunk, it’s a great science fiction show. They’ve continued the story of Batman Beyond in the comics.  It’s fantastic.

If you haven’t seen it, and you’re a Batman fan, highly recommend you watch Batman Beyond.

It’s Batman in the future. Bruce Wayne is old. He’s got a new protégé.  He’s the new Batman. He’s a young punk that has to learn to be Batman. It’s fantastic. Great, great show, highly recommend it.

9.  Teen Titans

Teen Titans, talk about bringing back the catchy intro music. Great show, lot of fun, it kind of introduces you to who the Titans are in a fun way.

Cyborg, Beast Boy, Raven, Starfire, it’s good and it’s funny, and it’s very lighthearted. And it’s just really, really wacky, and there’s five seasons of it. Great stuff, it’s really fun.

8. Legion of Superheroes

I talked about this specifically in another video, so that’s my number eight, Legion of Super Heroes.

7. Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Number seven I don’t own, but I’m planning to, but I don’t need to because it’s on Netflix. It’s Batman: Brave and the Bold.

It’s so awesome. They take, you know, you take the Dick Sprang style Batman where it’s kind of the zap, pow Adam West-ish kind of thing, but kind of mixed it up with a little more serious, but still campy. And there’s something about it that is just brilliant.

The designs are fantastic. The ideas for the shows are fantastic, the—some of the shows are just so smart and clever.

On top of that, there’s shorts at the beginning of every episode. It’s like a mini-introduction to some kind of classic silver age, golden age superhero.

It’s awesome. I can’t say good enough things about Batman: Brave and the Bold. You owe it to yourself to watch it if you’re a Batman fan.

6. Batman: The Animated Series

The Bruce Timm one, I specifically, specifically like the fourth season, where they really, really made them even slicker.  Not too fond of the—

this is the fourth season version of the Batman Animated Series. There was the WB version where he was a little fatter, and it was the first time that they were experimenting with the style and everything. I much prefer the fourth season, but yes, I watch this over and over.  Love, love, love.

5 . Superman: Animated Series

This came after the Batman animated series. This is number five on my list. This has the cleaner version style that they ended up getting with the Fox version of Batman.

Cool show, reintroduced Superman, reintroduced a lot of the mythology. Huge, huge influence on the comics. The moment this animated version came out, the comics started copying almost every single storyline from this TV show.  So—

such a smart show, such a complete reinvention of Superman. They did so much good to make Superman just relatable, awesome, the bad guys in it are great.

I love it. I love it.  It’s—I mean, Superman’s my favorite superhero. This is a great TV show and a great version of Superman.

4. The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

The DVDs are everywhere. I haven’t got a copy.  Why? Because it’s on Netflix.

Okay, so, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the animated series. What can I say? This is like reading the comics.

It’s so fun.  It’s cool. They do all the stuff that you want to see in a Avengers cartoon. It’s very similar to another show that’s higher on my list, the Justice League.

The second season’s even better. The first season’s all set-up. It’s good, introducing all the characters, and the universe, and things like that.

The second season has Spider-Man and all these other characters, and the New Avengers. I mean, it’s good. Highly recommend Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.  That’s my number four.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjkUWT4QIe0

3. The Spectacular Spider-Man

Hands down the best animated TV Spider-Man ever. It’s so good.

It’s better than the MTV version. It’s better than the 80s version with big fat—it’s better than Spider-Man 2099, I think that’s what it was.  I don’t know. He went to an alternate universe.

Yeah, I like this better even than the ‘67 version.  You know, Spider-Man, Spider-Man! I like this version even more than that, better than Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends.

This is the Spider-Man that fits the Spider-Man of today.

I like Ultimate Spider-Man. This is kind of like Ultimate Spider-Man animated, but not quite.  They cross Ultimate Spider-Man and the Ditko Spider-Man, and they just kind of—you end up with this. This is a really great show.

And of course, Sean Galloway designs, beautiful, streamlined, clean. Oh, it’s my favorite. I can’t seem to stop watching these shows, these episodes. They’re just—it’s cool.  They’re cool.

2. Justice League/Justice League Unlimited

JLA regular and Unlimited.  Unlimited, way, way better.  They fixed everything that was wrong with just regular JLA, especially in the first season JLA where Superman just kept getting knocked out, and then he was out for the count for most of every episode.

They fixed that in Season Two, and then they just upped the ante and put every single stinking character in the DC universe in Seasons Three and Four and Justice League Unlimited, full education into the DC universe.

I can’t stop watching these; these are so awesome. Awesome!

Hands down some of the best animated superhero cartoons ever made.

1. Young Justice

And finally my number one, and I’ve talked about this show specifically, and I highlighted this show, and that’s Young Justice.

Young Justice kind of takes the elements that made Justice League and Justice League Unlimited awesome, and they’ve kind of made it just a touch more serious, and it’s all about the younglings.

So, I love this show. I just keep watching it. It’s beautiful. You look at the artwork. You look at the action. It’s amazing. It’s a great evolution from Justice League Unlimited. It steps up that kind of storytelling.

So, those are my top ten superhero animated TV shows. I hope you’ve liked it. I’d love to hear your comments. Let me know what you think.  hat order would you have put these in, am I leaving something out that you would have put in. Let me know that, too.  If you’re on my blog, feel free to subscribe. If you do, you get a free digital copy of my sketchbook. It’s in print on Amazon. You can buy it there, but you can get a free digital copy if you want to at least check out what you would be purchasing physically if you like print books. Until next time, bye.

What I Remember About Working on Lisa the Vegetarian.

July 11, 2013 in THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS – What I Remember About Working on Lisa the Vegetarian.

Food_chainSimpsons Quote:

Homer: Are you saying you’re never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?

Lisa: No.

Homer: Ham?

Lisa: No.

Homer: Pork chops?

Lisa: Dad, those all come from the same animal.

Homer: Heh heh heh. Ooh, yeah, right, Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.

Hi.  Today I’m going to talk to you about having worked on Lisa the Vegetarian. You can watch the video below or read the transcription:

How Much Do I Remember?

It was season seven directed by Mark Kirkland.  I’ve been asked to talk about this. Apparently it was a topic of discussion in the NoHomers.net site.  To be quite honest I don’t remember working on the show in such a way that it is a clear experience in my mind as to what I did and how I did it.  I do remember having watched the show recently, in fact only two things or areas in the show that I worked on…well, three.

The first when I was watching it I’m like,

“Hey wait a minute I did that scene and I did this section.”

B.Y.O.B.B.

vegIt was when Homer comes in with the B.Y.O.B.B. little note with the pig note.  And Bart says something about cartoons are about getting hit in the head and all this other stuff, after having watch the Itchy and Scratchy cartoon.  And then Homer slams the door open on him that was all me.

I remember having worked on that show, having done that scene and doing the Bart acting.  There’s a lot of hand acting in it.

Lisa the vegetarian 01At the time I was trying really hard to animate and really act out stuff.  So you’ll notice in that scene where Bart  is talking about the cartoons then he walks over and he’s using his hands a lot.  I use my hands a lot.

But Bart’s using his hands a lot and you see him moving around and moving his hands.  And to me having worked on that scene it looks so spastic like I was trying so hard to act.  I was acting.  So yeah, I over emoted.

And then Homer comes in with his note and then I remember just basically tracing over the model sheet for that scene, for that pig invite prop and then just adding some dimension to it and adding Homers hand around it I think.

“That was a typo,” you know, his little gag.

You Can’t Win Friends with Salad

dontwinfriendswithsalad

This doesn’t look like my art. I think someone revised my drawings.

So I do remember that definitely.  And you don’t win friends with salad.  I don’t remember if I did that scene or not.  I believe that I did bits.  I worked on some of it but not all of it.  So that is vague.

I don’t recall all of it.  I mean I would’ve remembered – it seemed like something that would be something really involved, a pain in the butt and that I would of remembered working on.  But that section was mine so it must’ve been me.  I just don’t remember now.

Lisa Eats a Hot Dog

Lisa the Vegetarian 02The other scene that I do remember working on was in act three where Lisa goes and finally gives in and she eats a tofu dog in the Kwik E Mart.  Apu tells her that it’s a tofu dog.  I remember working on the scene where she sees the hot dog.

Lisa the Vegeterian 03I remember working on the scene where she grab the hot dog and that close-up of her with the dog I remember drawing that.  I remembered drawing the view of the hot dog coming over to you.  And then it would just get bigger.

Lisa the Vegetarian 04I remember doing that scene and taking a bite and eating it and she says, “There I did it!  Are you happy?”  I remember doing that. I think it was a match cut and it was a pullout and it was a huge pain – it was very technical and a pain in the neck.

I think that’s where I stopped.  I don’t think I did the rest of it.  I don’t remember doing the part with or did I do the part where they open the door to the non-alcoholic beer?  I may have worked on that scene to and then they go upstairs.

Revisions

So those are the only two scenes I remember working on.  I remember working on revisions in the earlier scene in the barbecue where everybody was eating. I did do some revisions on some characters there.  I believe I did some revisions on Wiggum.

“I can’t seem to get up my own energy”…or I forgot what it was.

I do believe I did a little bit of that scene or there was some kind of revisions that needed to be done.  I did not remember anything in act one that I may have worked on.

I Was a Rookie at the Time

You’ve got to understand that at the time I was very new still.  I had just gotten rehired so I was still very much a rookie and they weren’t giving me a whole lot to do.  My artwork in those scenes I did; those characters just weren’t as good, well drawn, as they ought to have been.

So yeah that’s my recollection.  That’s pretty much what I can remember working on Lisa the Vegetarian.  Good times.  I like watching the old shows. They are a lot of fun to watch and sometimes they trigger my memory.

Four Things to Think About When Writing a Novel Part 4 of 4.

July 4, 2013 in THE SIMPSONS NEWS

WRITING – Four Things to Think About When Writing a Novel Part 4 of 4

Four Things to Think About When Writing a Novel Part 4 of 4Simpsons Quote:

Bart: “Hey, writers! The Da Vinci Code just sold another hundred copies!” (loud moan from the writers).

Hi. Welcome to video four of “Things to Think About When You’re Writing a Novel”. These are four things to think about when you’re writing a novel. Today we’re going to be talking about dialogue tags and I’m here with my wife, Alesha Escobar.

You can either watch the video or read the transcription below:

Some of the links below are affiliate links. Thanks for your support.

About Dialogue Tags

Luis: I’ve been editing my wife’s third book out of the trilogy, which is of The Gray Tower series. One of them…

Tower's Alchemist Kindle coverAlesha: Tower’s Alchemist.

Luis: Tower’s Alchemist is number one. And number two is Dark Rift. And number three is Circadian Circle, which I’m halfway through.

And yeah, so we’re going to be talking about dialogue tags today and what do I mean by dialogue tags?

Alesha: Basically, he said/she said after a character speaks.

Dark Rift book coverLuis: Yeah. I personally don’t like them. And I just kind of became aware of them in the way that they work without them after I listened to author Michael Stackpole, which – who used to be a – what’s the word. A host of the podcast The Dragon Page where he often gave a lot of writing advice, and one of the writing advice – one of the things of advice that he gave about dialogue tags is this: he’d rather see a character described doing some kind of acting or action and then in the way that a dialogue is said. For example, and here’s like an exercise that he gave out and I thought that it was really interesting. If you could write a dialogue between two characters and the way you write them indicates cadence or accents or expression or emotes and you can just through dialogue know who is talking without having to have a dialogue tag then – I mean, that’s a good exercise that helps make dialogue flow and feel a little bit more natural, right. But it’s just an exercise that in and of itself.

Another exercise he said was what if you were sitting say across the room in an office and you were looking at two people having a conversation between a wall of glass. Like here’s a glass and another wall of glass. You couldn’t hear what they were actually saying at all, but you can tell exactly what everybody was saying and how they were saying it just by the acting and the body language. So if somebody was mad or angry or upset, just through the description of their body language in and of itself you can tell what the conversation might be about, what it’s possibly about, what they’re acting talking about, what the conversation might be about.

So if you’re that good of a description – if you have that much description in the character’s body language then a bit of dialogue might very well be clear at least in an emotional level.

So that’s what I – so when I look and I read through Alesha’s book and the manuscripts I try to find places where you can get rid of the dialogue tags, but here’s the thing…she doesn’t agree with me.

Alesha: I don’t agree with you, Luis. And I’m going to tell you why. Okay, first of all, when you have more than two people speaking in a scene you’re going to have to use tags at some point just to indicate who is speaking. Or if someone who has spoken before has stopped speaking and letting others speak and then they rejoin the conversation I think that’s acceptable. It’s still kind of I guess you would say standard to have dialogue tags, but I do partially agree with you in the sense that it’s not always needed like just straight down the line and I think that’s what you’re trying to say. And there can be times where you would just use body language or description to communicate to the reader who’s speaking and maybe even how they’re speaking and indicating their tone but, you know, I still use he said/she said and I think it’s fine. I think it’s fine, Luis.

Luis: Again, I would much rather read a book that doesn’t. I’ve become hyper aware of it. I just think the pros works better and it feels better somehow. I wish I had the book with me but it’s upstairs with the baby and I don’t want to wake him up. It’s a book called Daemon. I guess the author’s last name is Suarez – I
forgot. I forgot his first name. But I’ll link to it on below but, yeah, the – it’s his first novel and the book is like this big monstrous book like that and there are scenes where there’s a room full in a meeting and people are talking back and forth and there’s six, seven character having a discussion and throughout the entire book, if you look through the entire book, he never once uses any dialogue tags in the entire book. And everybody that has some kind of dialogue is clear who is speaking and I thought, see, it can be done. Like that’s – and it really – you don’t notice it. You just don’t notice that he didn’t use any dialogue tags. I mean, after I read that I’m like, see, it’s possible. It’s possible. It totally works. I sometimes just – it’s just much more difficult not to do the dialogue tags. I think that’s the biggest problem and if you don’t do it well it gets really confusing. So, I don’t know. I mean, that’s what – you know…

Alesha: I think if someone can write without using dialogue tags then go for it, but…

Luis: Well let’s see in the Tower’s Alchemist a section where dialogue tags weren’t used and how it would work.

Alesha: Okay.

Luis: Do you want me to read it?

Alesha: Start right here.

Luis: Okay. So here’s a little bit. I don’t even know who’s talking this time but it says:

“You had to go all the way up north?”

Ken nodded. “So I get there, and I find out that the guy had been guillotined.”

“Ouch…” I frowned. I supposed the SS wanted to break up the monotony of firing squads.

“But I found out he had left three notebooks of ciphers with his assistant before being arrested.”

“Where was the assistant?”

“Erm…in jail, but he was in Mantes.”

“Wait, didn’t you start off in that area?”

“I know, makes you want to punch something, doesn’t it?”

Bernard laughed. “He’ll probably end up punching me.”

“You two know each other?” My gaze went between Ken and Bernard.

“Do I know him?” Bernard shot Ken a quick glance. “If it weren’t for me, Drake wouldn’t know how to make it down the street in Paris.”

So, I mean, the whole time you didn’t use any dialogue tags and it was just like: “Bernard laughed,” you have, “my gaze went to Ken and Bernard” after her dialogue. You know, “I know him, ‘Bernard shot Ken a glance.'”

So that’s kind of like what I’m talking about. Like the entire time you tag it without specifically saying “said” or “I said” or whatever and you just add like a moment of action. And it kind of works like a dialogue tag only you’re doing it with a moment of action. I turned, Bernard laughed, he looked up, scratch – I don’t know. Scratched his head, you know, something. And so, it can be done. It’s just so much, much, much more difficult to do it that way and it can be confusing if you don’t do it well.

Okay. Well you got both our points of views and this is real obvious, so.

Alesha: Let us know what you think.

Luis: Yeah. Yeah. Right now the Tower’s Alchemist is free for the Kindle at the time of this video. I don’t know, it may not be free later on but right now it is.

Alesha: And where else is it free?

Luis: At the iBookstore and Smashwords.

Alesha: Good job.

Luis: Okay. And I’ll see you guys next time. I’m not even going to plug my newsletter where you can download my free book. Go to my blog and find out how you can do that. All right. So we’ll see you next week from Luis.

Alesha: Bye.

Luis: Bye.

VIDEOS – Superman vs. Thor

I thought this was fun. For a fan movie with no budget (?), this is pretty darn good. Enjoy:

BOOKS – Three Books on Comedy Worth Having

screen-shot-2012-03-18-at-11-45-32-amSimpsons Quote:

Krusty: Did you hear about the blonde who tried to make ice? She forgot the recipe! How come you don’t see many blonde snowwomen? It takes too much time to hollow out the head!
Bart Simpson: [laughing] He sure got you pegged, blondie.
Lisa Simpson: You’re blond too, you know.
Bart Simpson: Blond boys aren’t dumb, they’re evil, like in Karate Kid or World War II.

If you’re as interested in storytelling as I am, you’ve probably read a of books on story.

Adding levity in a story is one of the many things one can do to make a story more fun.  Today I’m going to be recommending my favorite books on comedy. I’ve found them to be very helpful, insightful and great reads.

You can either watch the video or read the post below.  It’s basically the same information:

The links below are affiliate links. Thanks for your support.

 Getting Better at Being Funny

I’m really interested in comedy.  I like writing jokes.  I’ve been doing it since I was in elementary school.

I’m really interested in improving my comedy, because I enjoy doing comedic cartoons and comics.

I’ve three recommendations for books that I’ve found to be very helpful when it comes to comedy.  So let’s get to it.

Three Great Books on Comedy

Comedy Writing Secrets: The Best-Selling Book on How to Think Funny, Write Funny, Act Funny, And Get Paid For It, 2nd Edition
by Melving Helitzer

This is the book fundamentals of comedy. This book is the book that gives you the foundations of what makes comedy work.  It talks about funny words, reversals, the rule of threes,…just about everything you can think of when it comes to the traditional foundations of comedy.  I say “traditional” because the view point of comedy in this book is very “retro.” It’s the kind of comedy you might hear Mel Brooks use. This book teaches very classic comedy troupes.

Don’t let that fool you though.  What’s in the book is pretty essential to know.  Great book.

The Eight Characters of Comedy: Guide to Sitcom Acting And Writing
by Scott Sedita

This guy watched a bunch of sitcoms and come up with the eight common archetypes that seem to be universal in all sitcoms.  INCREDIBLY useful to have if you want to have a launching off point when creating a comedic ensemble of characters that seem to universally work well together.

The Comedy Bible: From Stand-up to Sitcom–The Comedy Writer’s Ultimate “How To” Guide
by Judy Carter

This book is the compliment to Comedy Writing Secrets.  This is the application of comedy in a more modern way.  It talks about doing stand up in the, “what the deal with…?” style. But not really like that.  It simply gives you the foundation that most modern comedians use to write their routines,  ways to test you work, and many many other things. I really think you should get this book and read it with Comedy Writing Secrets.  You can get the fundamentals with one book and the modern application of those fundamentals with this book.

Serious About Comedy

So those are my three recommendations for books you should have if you want to get serious about comedy and get better at it.

If you have read great comedy books that you recommend, let me know, I’d love to know what they are.

If you get any of these books or even already own them, leave a comment and let me know what you think.

THE SIMPSONS NEWS – My Hiatus Ends and Dandelion Couch Gag

I came back to work this week.  I’m currently working on the revisions for show 1 of this new season.

Meanwhile, one of the Couch Gags I scrambled to board last season is out and is being promoted.  This is cool, so I thought I’d share it, so here you go:

VIDEO – Gaiman on Being Like Dandelions

Speaking of Dandelions, there’s this video making the rounds.  It’s Neil Gaiman making a speech on many things.  Mostly storytelling and publishing, BUT there’s also a bit on how to find the thing that will click with people.  It’s very interesting and worth listening to:

Is 2D Feature Animation Truly Dead?

May 16, 2013 in ANIMATION, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

ANIMATION – Is 2D Feature Animation Truly Dead?

Simpsons Quotes:Is 2D Feature Animation Truly Dead

“Don’t thank me, thank Hollywood for being completely out of good ideas.” ~ Herman Melwood

Are 2D feature animated films viable?  Can they make money.  Does the general public know the difference between 2D animated movies and CG animated movies? Do they care? Are American animated movies doomed to one genre of films? Namely, family movies?

There’s a lot of questions there.  I don’t know the answers but I want to start the conversation here.  This is what this week’s post is about.

You can either read the post or watch the video.  The information in generally the same but not exactly:

Disney Throws Out Its 2D Department

As of the time of this writing, Disney pretty much got rid off all their 2D animators and have no plans to make any new 2D animated movies.  They will all be CG.

I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago but I think it was kinda lost in the post. Especially since it was at the bottom the post and I didn’t make a video of version of my essay. I’m bringing it up again because I’d really like your opinion The-Hat-Building-webon this topic.

Last week my colleagues at The Corner Booth went to the “hat building” at Disney and spoke to Dale Baer.  We asked him about 2D animation and he confirmed that it was dead. At least, as far as feature film animation is concerned.

An Earlier Discussion I  had About This Topic

And of course, I wrote earlier about the huge discussion over this topic I had with Richie Chavez and Paul Wee.

Here’s a little of what I had written in that post. If you want to read the whole thing feel free to go and read it:

I’m still hopeful about 2d.  I think audiences want to see 2d animated movies.

Richie, had a different opinion.  He doesn’t think audiences care.  He doesn’t even think audiences know the difference.

The reality is that the last two 2d movies Disney came out with didn’t do well.  Never mind the fact that one wasn’t all that well written and the other didn’t really appeal to most people…

That second movie was referring to here was Winnie the Pooh. A movie based on a Disney franchise,  I think,  ruined by it’s direct to DVD sequels.  There’s nothing special or exciting about the franchise anymore. What did they expect?

…How about the “average” person who never thinks about animation at all? Do they feel the same way about 2d animated movies?

We discussed what “average” person meant and narrowed it down to: “parents/families.” Someone looking for something with good values they can trust.

But this begged the question:

Is that the ONLY market for animated movies.  Why not target other markets like anime does?  The answer from the discussion was this:

  1. Anime which is released in theaters that target those other markets, don’t really make all that much money. Even Studio Ghibli movies.

  2. Rise of the Guardians, was more teen centric and it didn’t do all that well (and it was CG!).

Different Genres in American Animation

I think the main flaw with testing different genres of animated movies using anime is that anime has a negative stigma attached to it in the eyes of many people. And Rise of the Guardians being marketed to teens…well…bad idea.  No teenager is going to get all excited to go watch a movie about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny just because they look “hip.”  That’s just bad foresight on the part of Dreamworks.

That said, there’s a few 2D animated European movies, like The Illusionist, which have gotten a lot of acclaim, yet, I don’t think they’ve made much money here in the U.S..

I’m still of the opinion that 2D animation would work with the right story.

If you’re a fan of 2D movies, you will go see them. But if you’re not, why not?  Why don’t you watch them?  What would get you to go watch a 2D animated movie?  If you used to like them but now you don’t, what happened?

I’d love to know. Let’s discuss.  I’m in the inside looking out scratching my head.

This shouldn’t be happening, but why is it?

THE SIMPSONS NEWS – My Hiatus is Almost Over

This week is my last week of hiatus.  I actually had more fun and relaxed more than I thought I would. Thanks to having our tax return show up just in the nick of time.

I’m going to miss the time off and spending time with the kids, but I’ll enjoy getting the paycheck every week.

Though I relaxed, I’ve still done quite a bit of work too and learned a few things.

Get ready to Get Inspired, the Art of Richie Chavez

May 2, 2013 in ART, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

ART – Get ready to Get Inspired, the Art of Richie Chavez

Get ready to Get Inspired, the Art of Richie Chavez Simpsons Quote:

(At the museum)

Homer: Aw, why does art hate me? I never did anything to art. (notices that his arm is stuck through a painting) Uh, let’s get out of here.

Alright, so I came into work one morning and my friend Paul IMed me.

“Get ready to die,” he wrote and then attached a link.

I followed said link and died.  Turns out his friend and my acquaintance Richie Chavez had a website with his art on in and it blew our minds.

Today I’m going to share that link with you and talk a little bit about Richie.

You watch the video below or you can read what everything I say in the text below the video.  It’s the same info so you choose:

Who is Richie Chavez?

Richie Chavez is a concept artist for animated movies. He’s worked at Disney, Dreamworks, and Sony pictures, to name a few of his high profile studios.

ONE of the movies he developed art for was PRINCE OF EGYPT.  He was on of the Art Directors in that movie.

If you own the Prince of Egypt art book, you can see some of his work. Work like this:

Richie Chavez art 01

and this one:

Richie Chavez art 02

And here’s  a picture of Richie:

Richie Chavez

I got to know Richie because we took Kung Fu together.  We were in the same class.

He’s a really great guy, he’s a really nice guy.  In fact, I was working on a Simpsons bible story comic,  and Richie let me borrow some books he had used for reference on Prince of Egypt.  Which was very cool. I was very very handy and it was very nice of him to do that for me.

Richie’s Site

Well, it turns out that my friend and mentor Paul Wee knows him very well, because they went to school together.  Paul has been bugging Richie about getting a website up online with his work.

Well, he finally got it on up.  Richie now has his own website with his artwork and it’s mind blowing.  You’ve got to go see it. It’s such good art.

He’s got stuff from Sinbad up there that.  Oh man, it’s so awesome! The ideas and the artwork is just incredible.  That movie had sooo much potential.

There’s work from the movie Surf’s Up there too.

I actually went down to Sony when that movie was in development and had lunch with Richie and because my friend Paul where  working there at the time.  The artwork and development artwork on the movie was so incredible.  At least you get to see some of it on his site.

He worked on Hotel Transylvania, Brother Bear…among many others.

The URL is www.richardpchavez.com

THE SIMPSONS NEWS – My Hiatus…or not

Last Thursday my hiatus began.  I should be back at work on May 20th.  Well…at least that was the plan.

So I go on hiatus, and quite frankly, I can’t afford to do so.  My wife and I have NOT be saving money.  Any extra money we make goes directly to getting rid of debt.  We’re trying to get rid of as much liability as we can so we can start having only assets.

The Money Problem

This basically means we’re risking it all to get rid of our debt.  So far we’re doing great.  We’ve only go one more credit card left to pay off and then we’ll tackle Alesha’s student loans.  After that, our car payments.

Anyway, the point is, we’ve got nothing saved up at all and we got hit REALLY hard last month on our property tax (remember, we live in California).  This left us without enough money to pay our mortgage. Then I’m sent on hiatus and hiatus is unpaid.

But don’t worry too much about us, our tax return helped us out.  In fact, our state tax return came a day before I was put on hiatus and it helped us pay our bills for the month, just in time.

Back to Work?

Breathing a sigh of relief I settled into my hiatus and started trying to figure out how I could get my personal projects done while still spending quality time with my kids.

Just as I was figuring all this stuff out, I get a call on Monday from work. I was asked if I could come in for two days to help out on some storyboards beginning Tuesday.  What am I going to say? No? Of course I said I was available.

I came in on Tuesday and began to work.  As I was doing my thing, one of my directors come into my office.

“Remember the Couch Gag you boarded two weeks ago? Mike Anderson gave some great notes on them, I need you to apply them for Thursday.”

“But I’m only here today and tomorrow.”

“They haven’t told you? You’re going to be here Thursday too so you can add these fixes.”

“Oh…okay then.”

A few hours later, production came in and asked me to come in on Thursday only to find out that the director had jumped the gun and told me.

So two days has now turned to three, but hey, I’m not complaining, I need the money.

At a Simpsons Party, I Encountered Weird Al Yankovic and..

April 4, 2013 in THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS – At a Simpsons Party, I Encountered Weird Al Yankovic and…

At a Simpsons Party, I Encountered Weird Al Yankovic and..Simpsons quote:

Homer Simpson: Hey, Weird Al! Did you get those parodies I sent you?
‘Weird Al’ Yankovic: Yes I did, Homer.
Homer Simpson: Which one was better, “Livin’ La Pizza Loca” or “Another One Bites The Crust”?
‘Weird Al’ Yankovic: Actually, Homer, they were both the same.
Homer Simpson: Yeah, like you and Allan Sherman.

Sometimes, at Simpsons parties, celebrities that provide guest voices show up.

I don’t often get starstruck.  In fact, I’ve NEVER gotten starstruck.  This isn’t to say that I don’t think it’s neat when I see a celebrity.

Although, if I was to ever get an opportunity to talk to a celebrity or something, I probably would, if I wanted.  Problem is, I don’t do well socially in the BEST of times. Not even with people I know, so I doubt talking to strangers would be any better.

Case in point, I had the opportunity one time to talk to Weird Al Yankovic at a party, here’s what happened.

You can either watch the video or read about the event below. It’s the same info:

(Some of the links below are affiliate links)

Growing Up with Weird Al

Growing up I really didn’t listen to much music.  In fact, my little brother and my big sister LOVED music. I was surrounded by their music. They just couldn’t get enough music. From U2 to Bob Dylan…you name it they where into it. But I was not.

The only thing that I would listen to, was Weird Al Yankovic.

I still have my records.  Like my “Even Worse” record:

Wierd Al Yankovic Even Worse

and this self titled one:

weird Al Yankovic record

The right hand corner of the second record album above is chewed up by the hamsters I had growing up. I left the album too close to the hamster cage.

I do have a turn table so I can still listen to the records.  I also had tapes. Mostly I had tapes.

I listened to them all the time. I memorized the music, it was fun.  I lyrics where humorous. I was really into comic strips and comedy. It was my thing.

Yeah ,so I was into Looney Tunes, comics strips, funny music…that was my life. I wasn’t that serious a kid (well maybe I was) which is why I like comedy and liked to laugh.

Who would have thought that he’d do a voice on the show.  I believed he played himself in it.

An Encounter on at The House of Blues

Well, one time there was Simpsons party that took place in The House of Blues in Hollywood.  My wife and I, we were in line to get in, and who was in front of us, but Weird Al Yankovic.

So it was a bit of shock because…well, I grew up listening to his music.  For so many years, and there he was.  But I didn’t do anything.  I didn’t say anything. I’m just too introverted to do that. But it was a very strange experience.

Anyway, we get inside The House of Blues and we go and mingle.  We’re there for an hour or two and my wife needs to use the ladies room.

So we walk over there to the restrooms and I stand outside, lean against a wall and while I wait for her to come out, because I have nothing else to do.

Of course, who has a date that also needs to use the lady’s room, but Weird Al Yankovic. So he’s standing there next to me, and we make eye contact.

The Big Moment

For that split second when we made eye contact…in my head I said to him,

“Dude, I listened to your albums for so many years of my life. They’ve been part of my life.  Thank you for making me laugh.” Stuff, stuff I wanted to say. It was just welling up.

We locked eye for just a simple second. Then we turned away from each other feeling really really awkward.  I can tell he felt awkward, like he should say something, but he didn’t. And I felt awkward, because I KNEW I should say something but I didn’t.

It Passes By

So we just sat there feeling uncomfortable, sharing silence.  It was terrible.

It’s the curse of the introvert, the curse of the shy guy. And then my wife came out and we walked away, and that was it.

That’s my story. It’s anti-climactic, it’s heart wrenching and he was there and I said nothing. It was weird, and sad, and it sucked.

Tell me Your Story

Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever done that?

I few weeks ago I got a good response from one of these posts and it was really interesting to hear your stories.

Behind the Scenes of a Simpsons Doritos Commercial

March 28, 2013 in THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS – Behind the Scenes of a Simpsons Doritos Commercial

Behind the Scenes of a Simpsons Doritos CommercialSimpsons quote:

Homer: D’oh!

Doritors announcer: …ritos

I’ve fully animated on The Simpsons many times during my years on the show.  I say this because my job doesn’t require me to animate most of the time.

I spent most of my career on The Simpsons as a Character Layout artist.  This is different than being an animator although there is some overlap.  If you want to know more about the job of a Character Layout artist, I wrote about HERE.

The first time I was able to full animate for The Simpsons was actually on a Doritos commercial.

To hear the story behind this commercial,  you can either watch the video or read the text below.  At the bottom of the post, you’ll have a chance to watch the commercial:

Animation Training in Action

The Doritos commercial was directed by Swinton Scott. I had all been layout out before I got it and I was asked to animate every single shot in the commercial.

It was a lot of fun but it was a very challenging thing. I hadn’t done anything like it before. By which I mean, I’d never been paid to animated before.  It was a big learning experience.

I through everything I learned about animation up till then into the project. A lot of overlapping action, things stopping at different times, action, movement…it was fun.

The artwork is NOT the best.  It was very early on in my career. It wasn’t like I had the best drawing of Homer.  I didn’t have the character down as well as I should have, but it was the best I could do at the time.

I found a copy of it on Youtube and I’ve embedded the video below.

Making Things fit Together.

I will say that, there’s a scene in the commercial that used to be two separate shots.  When we showed it to Fox we received some notes.  One of the notes was to cut out a scene. This forced us to combine the two scenes that book ended the missing scene. The scenes looked identical but they actually were not.

I ended having to animate the scenes into one another.  It’s near the end and it’s weird.  You’ll see. There’s a scene near the end where the announcer says, “food in the fast lane.” Well, that whole scene used to be two scenes.

You’ll see at the beginning of that shot that Homer kinda morphs a little bit. That’s where I was trying to animate these two scenes together and combine them into one scene.

The Commercial

So if you’re ready to watch it, here you go:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Jmh_8VJHJ8

What’s your Reaction?

What do you think? Did you ever see this commercial when it went live?

THE SIMPSONS NEWS – The Couch Gag that Wouldn’t Die

So this season seems have been the season of epic Couch Gags.

Most of the Couch Gags I’ve worked on this season have been epic.  Like, “mini movie” epic.

I haven’t worked on all of them but I’ve worked on quite a few. Most of the time I don’t mind at all.  They’re a lot of fun.

This week though, I came face to face with the Couch Gag that wouldn’t die.

I’m working on revising show 22 of this season. Production approached me to do some overtime revising the storyboards for a Couch Gag  that needed to be approved.

I said sure.  I fixed the boards really quick and off it went.  I continued revising show 22.

Next day, after lunch, I’m told  there where notes on the Couch Gag.  I needed to fix the board A.S.A.P., so I did.  The fixes where kinda elaborate.   It took me three times longer to fix than the original notes.  Meanwhile, I’m running  behind on show 22.

I finish the fixes.

Nope, there are two designs that I need to put in the board.  I have to redraw some stuff.

So I change the designs and turn it in.  The board is okay, and that was that.  The boards are sent to get approved again.

The next day, mid-morning, I get sent a note telling me there’s more fixes.  Different fixes.

“GAH!” Why won’t this Couch Gag leave me alone?!  (Sigh)

So I fix it.  It didn’t take long.  It was minor, but it was annoying.

I half expect to get the boards sent back to me again before the day was over…and they were.

More changes were sent to me. Nothing that was even in the original script either.  The board just wouldn’t die.

I managed to finish those changes.  I hope we don’t get sent more today.  Wish me luck.

Now I’m behind on my work and have to make up the time.

At least I’m getting paid overtime.

Oh well, I can’t complain, it’s still a fun job. It can just get annoying sometimes.

Full Frontal Naked Bart in a French Commercial

March 7, 2013 in THE SIMPSONS NEWS, WEBSITES

THE SIMPSONS NEWS – Full Frontal Naked Bart in a French Commercial

Full Frontal BartThe Simpsons Quote:

[Comic Book Guy sits at his computer.]

“Hey, what the? Huh, the Internet King. I wonder if he can provide faster nudity.”  – Comic Book Guy.

Sometimes, when you work in animation, you end up working a some very strange projects.

Sometimes you end up working on foreign commercials with full frontal cartoon nudity in them.

This happened to me, and I’m going be talking about in this weeks post.

You can watch the video or simply read what I have to say below.

There’s is a link to the commercial I talk about further down the page:

The First Full Frontal Bart

Years ago I worked on a French detergent commercial that used The Simpsons characters.

It’s one of those surprising and strange projects that you’re asked to do. I believe I did character layout on it.

In case you don’t know what Character Layout is, CLICK HERE, I wrote a whole post explaining it. In nutshell, it’s the process where we set up the shots and draw in the acting and the key animation poses of a scene.

Alright, so here’s the interesting thing about this French commercial: It ends with the family naked at the end.  At least some of the family.  They kinda run off screen before you get to see any of their nakedness.  Except for Bart.

It’s the first time that Bart was ever show naked, full frontal. They did it again The Simpsons movie and made a big joke out of it.  But that French commercial was the first time they did that naked joke.

The Note From Matt Groening

Now, this was the thing I found interesting.  The storyboard artist had drawn Bart, anatomically correct. But you see…man I wish I had some of the artwork so I can show you but I don’t. I did find the video and you can see it below but the thing is, there was this note. I remember the note because, I think I was doing the layout scene or…I don’t remember what it was but, the note was from Matt Groening.

Well Matt Groening didn’t want Bart to be drawn anatomically correct in the way it was drawn in the board.  He wanted the drawing to be a little bit more abstract. You’ll see what he looks like in the actual Youtube video. That’s exactly the look that Matt Groening gave us to have Bart look like.

I thought that was very interesting and very funny.

So if you want to see the first full frontal naked appearance of Bart, here you go:

Hi, Welcome!

This blog is your window into the daily life of a Simpsons artist. See what it's like work on a hit TV show!

I update this blog once a week, on Thursdays and (sometimes) Fridays. If you don't see anything new, just check back on one of those days.

My e-mail is: luis(at)luisescobarblog(dot)com

Both my books are now on Amazon. Pick up your own print copy today!
