Alesha’s birthday. Trip to Disneyland Part 1. Chance’s videos and blog. Pathfinder rules, for FREE

September 17, 2009 in BLOGS, FAMILY, ROLE PLAYING GAMES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

A much easier week this week than last weeks. It helps that I don’t have to stay late.  That really wore me out last week.  Been getting a lot of work done lately and I’m feeling good about it.

FAMILY

Sept 11th was Alesha’s birthday. She was a little concerned about what she wanted to do for her birthday. She really likes celebrating it and having fun with it. We celebrated her birthday on Saturday the 12th.  Alesha had invited (at the last minute) her family and ours to our house for a barbecue. Most everyone showed up and our little house was packed.  I took Munchkin and her cousin Chrystal, to the playground and then we went swimming.  Meanwhile Alesha’s sister, Devisha, cooked food.  After our swim, we came home and ate.

Alesha was having a great time.  The kids where happy because they got to eat the junk food they don’t usually get to eat.

Later in the night, one of Alesha’s best friends, Monica, brought a Karaoke machine from her car and we ended the night singing Karaoke.  Munchkin loooved singing and put on a show.

Overall, the party was a success and I don’t think Alesha felt it was a lot of work for her (which was her biggest concern).

We got up early Tuesday morning on Sept. 8th. We ate breakfast, got the kids ready and off we went to Disneyland.  It was 7:30am when we left the house and traffic was awful. What should have taken 30 minutes took about an hour fifteen.

We got a little lost getting to the park but, after going around in a big circle, we managed to make it to the parking lot.

I had called my parents before we had left.  They were going to meet us at the gates.  Surprisingly enough, they got to the park at the same time we did and even parked three cars away and we didn’t even know it. We discovered it when we left for the day.

Disneyland parking lot

We made our way to the shuttle and where confronted by the first obstacle we would encounter, namely, how we were going to get our big double stroller on the shuttle.  Lucky for us, The shuttles have a big space for double strollers.

Disneyland shuttle

Once off the shuttle, we made our way to buy the tickets to get into the park.  The tickets are just soooo darn expensive.

ROLE PLAYING GAMES

This week I’ll add to last week’s list of free Dungeons and Dragons type games with a free version of the hugely successful newly released Pathfinder Roleplaying game.

http://entertheoctopus.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/pathfinder-rpg.jpeg

This is an updated version of the D&D 3.5 rules.  It cleans up the rules and makes many of the classes and races much more interesting:

Free Pathfinder rpg rules (courtesy of the publishers themselves).

The link contains all the rules that are included in the new rule book, but it’s all on the site. I’m using it at the moment to make myself  some Eberron characters. I found the  Eberron  3.5 Campaign Setting book for three bucks at amazon (woo hoo!). I must say I’d much rather buy the actual book thought. It’s darn inconvenient to go through the site to make your characters. Not only that, but I’ve heard the art in the book is incredible.  That said, it’s free, so there isn’t much to complain about.  If I wanted to, I could buy the pdf of the book for $9.99 from Paizo, but that’s still not as cool as having the book. Whenever I can afford to buy the cheaper amazon copy of the book, I will. For now I’ll just use the site.

A trip to Disneyland: Part 0. Dungeons and Dragons Podcast. Free D&D clones

September 10, 2009 in FAMILY, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Since I had to make up the hours from our little trip to Disneyland (see below) on Tuesday, I had to work late this week.  It was especially difficult because, since it was Labor Day on Monday, I only had three weekdays to use to make up the work.  It was even more difficult because a house insurance person was appointed to come over to the house early Wednesday and came really late.  This meant I had to make up even MORE hours.  Needless to say it’s a hectic week.

FAMILY

We wanted to take Munchkin to Disneyland for her birthday.  We chose not to take her on her birthday months since it was still summer vacation time, which meant that it was peak season.  It would have been crowed and the lines for the rides would have been awful. Taking advantage of the fact that we live in Southern California, we decided to wait for an off season month and go on a weekday, thus avoiding the crowds. We chose Tuesday of this week.  I took some pictures and missed a lot of good picture moments which I’m going to have to supplement with drawings from my head. In any case, I’ll be writing about our trip for the next few weeks, when I get a chance.

PODCASTS

So I write a lot about table top role playing games. Well, if you’ve ever wondered what playing one would be like, there are a few podcasts out there where gamers record their game sessions for everyone to hear.  One of these, and by far the most entertaining one you can listen to, is the Dungeons and Dragons game session podcasts.

Starring such internet celebrities as:

The folks at Penny Arcade (webcomic):

  • Mike Krahulik (Gabe from Penny Arcade): as Jim Darkmagic of the New Hampshire Darkmagics
  • Jerry Holkins (Tycho from Penny Arcade): as Omin Dran, CEO of Acquisitions Incorporated

The creator of PvP (webcomic):

  • Scott Kurtz: as Binwin Bronzebottom

and of Star Trek Next Generation fame and geek superstar extraordinaire:

  • Wil Wheaton: as “Al”.

They all play the funniest game of D&D 4th edition I’ve ever heard.  It truly is entertaining to listen to.

They’ve been playing the game for quite a few sessions already.  I will put a link below starting with their newest adventure.

If you like any of these guy’s web comics (THE most successful on the internet) or  Wil Wheaton’s comedy (which is fantastic), you owe it to yourself to listen to this podcast.

Episode One of their new adventure.

ROLE PLAYING GAMES

…and speaking of Dungeons and Dragons…

As you may know, D&D is now on it’s 4th edition (4E) and it’s a bit of a pricey hobby to get into…BUT…

If you want to get into it and don’t want to spend any money, there are a lot of people who have created “retro-clones” of the original editions of D&D. Editions 0 thru 2.

For an in depth look through all these books go to: To the Blogmobile! (which is where I got all my info).

Here’s the gist of what you need to know. The games below are free to download:

Inspired by: Dungeons & Dragons (1974) and Supplements (1979)

  • Swords & Wizardry: White Box
  • Swords & Wizardry: Core Rules  (ENnie award winning free game!)
  • Microlite74

Inspired by: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1978)

  • OSRIC  (Old School Reference & Index Compilation)
  • Labyrinth Lord
  • Basic Fantasy

All these games have a lot of support from fans and are compatible with any old school D&D supplements and modules you can find on the net.

It is also possible to find the original D&D books to download.  I recommend the retro-clones first because the original games’ rules are poorly layout out and often confusing.  Once you’ve read the much better written retro-clones, it will become much easier to figure out the what the original rules are trying to say. (Not to mention that I’m not sure it’s legal, but I could be wrong).

I also recommend downloading and reading this:

  • A quick primer of old school gaming.

It shows the difference in how these old school rule differ from the new modern versions of D&D, and the mindset you need in order to understand how the game is meant to be interpreted and played. In other words, why the game is so simple and how in blazes do you play something so simple.

Finishing up on a crew. Board gaming with Munchkin. Eduardito’s birthday

September 3, 2009 in BLOGS, BOARD GAMES, FAMILY, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Chaotic work week. Alesha started work so we started out carpooling together. Do to the crazy amount of last minute work I need to get done, that soon changed. I had to get all my work on one crew done by Tuesday because I started on a new crew on Wednesday.  I wasn’t told until late Monday.  It wasn’t a very happy situation.

FAMILY

I just thought I’d take the time to say,

“Happy Birthday!” to Eduardito. My cousin’s boy has turned 3 years old, hurray! He had a really fun birthday party Saturday.  I kinda wished we could have stayed a bit longer since Munchkin was just starting to have fun but, Alesha wasn’t feeling well.  Best part of the party was seeing Dante hit the pinata. Very funny.

BOARD GAMES

So I asked Munchkin if she wanted to play a card game with me.  Of course she said, “YES!” So I took out a Memory game.   It’s a Mr. Potato Head Memory card game we got as a McDonalds Happy Meal toy a year or so ago.  I’ve been waiting all this time to be able to play a game with her with these cards.  I tried to do so a few weeks after we had gotten them but she was too little to understand the memory matching.

At first I wanted to test her to see if she would be able to understand what we were suppose to be doing.  I put the cards face down and she flipped one up, then she took turns flipping every card, looking at it, then putting it back down face down until she found the match.  This is how we played the first two times.  I didn’t take any turns.

Then I decided to test her to see if she would play by the “rules” by only allowing her to flip over two cards. If they didn’t match, it was MY turn.  That way, if I flipped over a card she was looking for, I wanted to see if she would remember it.  Also, I wanted to see if she got the idea of taking turns.  I did this with a few cards at first and with every game I added more.  She did fantastic.   We were playing with all the cards in no time. I was amazed.  She even beat me at the game quite a few times, she was really good at it.  I handicapped myself, only a little and unintentionally.  When I would find a match, I wouldn’t take another turn, but when she found a match, she took another turn.  When I tried to take a second turn after I found a match, I found she got impatient and thought it was unfair. She felt I was skipping her turn so I stopped doing it.  Otherwise, we played the game by the rules.

To me, this was the greatest thing ever.  I was FINALLY playing a board game with my daughter.  One that wasn’t mindless.  One with choices. It was as if the clouds had parted and God (looking like the one in the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail) came out of a cloud saying:

Monty Python God blessing my Gaming

So having realized that Munchkin is old enough to play games with me now, I made my way to the local Target store the next day to look for games I might be able to play with her.  I looked at games and found a few but I wasn’t sure if they were any good so I wrote down the names of all the ones I thought looks interesting and went home to look them up on BGG.

None but ONE of the games where any good, and even the one I thought sounded good wasn’t really all that good.  What I was searching for was a game that she could learn to play now, but that would still be challenging as she got older. Though a bit dull, Memory is exactly this type of game.  All you do is add more cards and it gets more difficult. Candyland was right out.  No decisions and too easily outgrown (not to mention I did NOT want to play Candyland).  So I searched online for some games.  These are the games that caught my eye that I think fit the criteria I was looking for:

Kids of Carcassonne:

Yes, that’s right, there is a Carcassonne game for kids and it looks great. I think Munchkin would “get” this one to some extent and she could grow into it.  Check out this review of the game:

Next is…

Gulo Gulo:

This is a dexterity game with a modular board where you play a cute wolverine who takes eggs from the vulture nest in the middle. You do this so you can rescue the baby wolverine that has gotten himself trapped in the nest. Here’s a video review explaining the game:

Finally…

Chicken Cha Cha Cha:

A memory game with also with a modular board. The object of the game is to steal the feathers of the other player’s chickens by jumping over them.  The way you move your chicken forward is by flipping over a card in the center of the board that matches the picture in the square in front of  your chicken.  You continue your turn until you fail to find a match.

Out of  all of these, I think I can make a homemade version of Chicken Cha Cha Cha.  It just won’t be as silly as the chicken theme but we will be able to play it.

I’m thinking of using the Qwirkle tiles to do this.  They work really well to play Memory.  In fact, after I got tired of the Potato Head Memory game I subjected to Munchkin that we use the Qwirkle tiles.  We took out a set of matching pieces, flipped them around, shuffled them up and played a game.  It was much more difficult and still, Munchkin did amazingly well.  She won most of the time and I think I tide her once.  Although I suppose I did let her win sometimes.  Still, she remembered where tiles were or the general area where tiles were.  Sometimes she remembered tiles I hadn’t, and as a bonus, after we were done playing she decided to just play with the tiles.  She like telling me the colors and shapes as well as counting them.

I love being able to play board games with her now.

BLOGS/PODCASTS

I’ve recently been asked by two different bloggers/podcasters if for permission to use my drawings for their posts.  They’ve both used the drawings for very different purposes and I find that kinda neat.

Here a link to both the sites:

St. Mary Catholic Church Podcast – My drawing is used as a compliment to a “sound bite” of a sermon on the Sacrament of Reconciliation (a.k.a. Confession). It’s two minutes long. Check it out.

No More Lives – This a blog (and soon to be podcast) which tries to be, in their own words, “the New Yorker of video games”. In an attempt to bring in a little variety to their content, they’ve gotten a board game geek on board to express a different position. My drawing was used in one such article on their site called Gaming Without Batteries  by Kyle Bolin. Great read.

Religious Simpson’s show. Munchkin and Dante are Spirited Away. Free tabletop Role playing games. Qwirkle goes mainstream

August 27, 2009 in FAMILY, MOVIES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Finished up my work with the last crew and started up on a new one. Religion is the theme of this show. Surprisingly not very  insulting.  I’ve seen a show this season that does have a very anti Christian joke in it (actually making fun of Jesus. I hope they cut that joke out). Yet this one, which is all about religion, gets away with the topic by only making fun of the people rather than the religions (or it’s founders). Wonder if anyone will care for it?

FAMILY/MOVIES

So I decided to see what Munchkin’s reaction would be to the movie Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki.  Keep in mind that she’s only three years old and the movie is REALLY intense.  Why would I even attempt to show her this movie? Well, I’ve tried showing her other dubbed version of Miyazaki movies that I own. I showed her My neighbor Totoro.

http://bjanepr.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/anime-my-neighbor-totoro.jpg?resize=581%2C435

It didn’t keep her attention at all. I then tried showing her my personal favorite Miyazaki movie (if it’s in the original Japanese) Kiki’s Delivery Service and, again, she didn’t really care for it (I don’t own Castle in the Sky Laputa dubbed, so I couldn’t show her that).

https://i0.wp.com/www.northarc.com/images/kiki/kikic1024x768.jpg?resize=583%2C450

So I pretty much gave up showing her Miyazaki movies.  Then, one day while going over my DVDs, she saw Howl’s Moving Castle and asked me if she could watch it. So I thought, why not?  It’s intense but I doubt it will keep her attention for long.  I mean, it’s about a young woman who turns into a old lady, for goodness sake. What could she possibly like about it?

https://i0.wp.com/freenet-homepage.de/kettensaegenpiraten/HowlsMovingCastle_by_cls.jpg?resize=585%2C365

Well, apparently, just about everything but the end.  She sat through most of the movie. In fact, she loves seeing the part where the main character turns old.  Why in the world does that movie keep her attention while Totoro doesn’t, is beyond me. So since she liked Howl’s Moving Castle, I thought perhaps I’d show her Spirited Away.

Both Munchkin and DANTE where glued to their seats! Dante too. He’s only a year and a half years old. They couldn’t get enough of the movie.  They watched the whole thing. From the moment they saw it, they barely blinked.

spirited-away.jpg

When it ended, Munchkin asked me to play it again. WHY?!

Here’s my theory: From the moment the movie begins, there is a sense of conflict to the situation the protagonist (a young girl) is in. Within the first five minutes of the movie, she is faced with having to choose between one fear and another (follow her parents into the scary tunnel or stay behind in the car alone with the creepy statue).

https://i0.wp.com/images.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Spirited-Away-wallpaper-spirited-away-400845_1024_768.jpg?resize=589%2C441

Her choices go from bad to worse as the story develops and she is confronted with one frighten thing after another.

https://i0.wp.com/hirvine.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/spirited_away_05.png?resize=585%2C327

This movie puts the young girl in the most perilous and dangerous situations a little kid could possibly be in, and yet, she faces all the situations, fear and all, and not only begins to conquer her fears, but also begins to thrive.  The scary things, the dangerous things,  she faces them all in a believable way and becomes strong.  All those things, become less scary, less weird and she comes out ahead in the end.

http://stevenhartsite.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/yubaba.jpg?resize=585%2C316

I think both Munchkin and Dante related to a character that was confronting very scary things.  To them, everything must seem as scary as the monsters in the movie. Maybe to them, the world is full of giants and weird new magical scary things.  They must have empathized with the protagonist’s predicament from the start.  But then seeing her “handle it”, get used to it all and thrive must have really been the thing that kept them riveted.

Miyazaki captured the true essence of the old fairy tales in this movie. The type of story that isn’t watered down by making the perils a person faces so weak that it’s hardly a threat and therefore, not really worth telling. This movie is like a classic fairy tales that puts a character in a true life and death struggle where you either succeed and become a stronger, better person in the end, or die trying.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqXHPHhvU9w&feature=related

OR…maybe I just have weird kids. After all, Munchkin LOVES Batman, which I don’t understand because Superman is WAY cooler. I blame it on her mother.

ROLE PLAYING GAMES

For those of us who are broke, getting free games is awesome, so I thought I’d put up some Free Rpgs or board games that I’ve found on the net.  This week I’ll put this one up:

Risus: The Anything Rpg

Risus (Latin for laughter) is an extremely rules lite rpg.  You can download the pdf of the game off the site and the rules are six pages long. It was designed as a comedy rpg but as far a I can tell, most people use the game for more “serious” games.  It’s very versatile and has a very clever conflict resolution mechanic.  It’s also very easily modified to you own needs. It has a  fairly involved community that has made quite a few mods to the game already. Check it out.

BOARD GAMES

(Photos taken from www.boardgamegeek.com)

I’ve mentioned the game Qwirkle before in two posts a loooong time ago. I’ve been meaning to write a review of the game and I will the next chance I get.

The reason I’m bringing it up though is because, up until now,  the game has been difficult to find in stores. You could get it online but, often, that is just a pain (especially with the shipping cost) and some people don’t feel comfortable buying online (like my mom).  Nothing beats going over to a store, seeing a game, picking it up, examining it, buying it and playing it a few minutes later.

Well, now you can do just that.  Qwirkle is now being sold at Target stores in the U.S..  I discovered this on Tuesday when I stopped off at one to buy some diapers.  I always go the toy section to check out the toys and board games. You can imagine my surprise when I came across the game. It’s always exciting when a good “hobby board game” makes it’s way to the mainstream retailers.

Congrats!

Hurray for overtime. Reading through Alesha’s story. Raul, superstar. Green Lantern: First Flight

August 20, 2009 in BLOGS, FAMILY, MOVIES, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

This is the second time I’m writing this since I lost my original version somehow.  I have to make sure to make a back up. This post is the MUCH ABRIDGED version of the original.

I’ve gotten permission to do overtime at work.  This is good since I need the money.  It’s bad because I don’t get much time to do anything else (like re-write my lost blog post).

FAMILY

Alesha finished the first draft of her story. I’ve been reading it and giving her my two cents.  It starts off really well and then it begins to get a bit rushed.  She needs to double her word count so it’s not a big deal.  She just needs to slow the story down a bit by adding more.  It’s fun to read.  We’ve been bouncing ideas back and forth on it. Once it’s done, maybe I’ll put up a chapter or two on the blog.

MOVIES

Alesha and I saw, Green Lantern: First Flight on Monday.  I rented it late last week.  I really enjoyed it. Not for the kiddies.  This is rate PG-13.

I’m also looking forward to the next animated movie DC is coming out with. It’s based on a great comic I own called Public Enemies. Take a look:

Paul and Comic Con. Played Tichu with my parents. Munchkin’s reaction to my cartoons. RpgGeek is up

August 6, 2009 in BOARD GAMES, FAMILY, ROLE PLAYING GAMES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I was taken off the crew I was on and put on yet another crew.  I was told at lunch about it Tuesday.  I don’t really mind though. Especially since the scenes I’m working on involve BOARD GAMES. Woo Hoo!

In other news…Paul finally got his sketchbook out:

Paul’s Sketchbook Cover

Most of the people in that crowd are based on real geeks Paul know or took pictures of. I’m in the back cover.

The sketchbook is great.  If you want to buy a copy you can order one from STUART NG BOOKS. He printed it for Comic Con and sold it there. He told me one of the people that bought a copy was none other than Disney Animator Glen Keane. Glen Keane was the head animator on such Disney characters as Ariel, The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Tarzan, and Long John Silver. He told Paul that it was his first time at Comic Con and that Paul‘s sketchbook and Ronnie Del Carmen‘s sketchbook were the only things he had bought at the Con. Paul was very honored.

He also told me that, since he was a Dealer, he was able to walk around the show floor before it officially opened.  As he walked by a booth and saw a bunch of pictures of Edward James Olmos on a table.

“Oh wow, Edward James Olmos.” He turned to the guy in the booth, “Is he here?”.  The guy in the booth didn’t say a word, he merely pointed next to were Paul was standing.  He turned his head only to come face to face with Mr. Olmos himself.  Paul nearly jumped out of his skin and stood dumbfounded not able to speak.  After a few moments he was able recover and asked Mr. Olmos for an autograph, shook his hand and got a picture taken with him.  Paul is a huge Battlestar Galactica fan.  Later on during the Con he got to meet other cast members, such as James Callis.

Sounds like the had a fun time.

Oh…and I also heard from from him and quite a few of my co-workers that they saw Leonard Nimoy  walking around the show floor, enjoying the chaos.

BOARD GAMES

I invited my parents over Saturday for a game night.  I definitely took out “family games” this time around, or at least I thought they were all family games. Something fun and lite with a little bit of strategy.  To this end, I brought out Ticket to Ride: Europe, Modern Art , Vegas Showdown, and Tichu . I would have brought out Ingenious but I wasn’t in the mood to play that game.

I asked everyone what they wanted to play after I explained the gist of how  each game played.  My mom wanted to play Tichu so that’s what we played.  It was the first time I’d ever played it.  I wasn’t sure what to expect but it didn’t really seem too complicated when I read the rules.  Then we started playing it. Woah, for such a simple game it sure forces you to make difficult decisions from the get go. Everyone was a bit overwhelmed by how deep the game was.

It’s a bit of a partnership trick taking game. You win a trick by trying to put down higher combos of cards than the other players on the table. Thing is, there is some really nice nuances in the game that dictate when you WANT to win the trick,  when it’s a good time to play certain cards and when you want to be the first player to play all your cards. We all had a good time but, man, it was really shocking to discover how deep the game was.  I recommend it.

FAMILY

So Munchkin was on my lap this weekend as I looked some stuff up on my computer.  She notice my Avatar in one of my file folders so I clicked on it so she could take a better look.  My Avatar animates so she likes it.  It isn’t the first time she’s seen it and often asks me if she could see the “funny face”. This time though it suddenly dawned on her that the avatar was suppose to be me and she sat up, pointed at it and exclaimed:

funny-daddy.jpg

She started laughing, “That’s a very funny daddy”.  Now she calls it, “funny daddy”.  I showed her the other drawings on my blog and she thought they were very funny too. It still hasn’t dawned on her that the little girl in all those blog drawings is her. I tried to tell her but she didn’t get it. She’ll figure it out eventually.

ROLE PLAYING GAMES

I write a lot about the Board Game Geek Website (BGG).  It’s a fantastic resource for discovering every kind of tactile game you can play with friends and family.  Well, the creator of  BGG, Scott Alden (Aldie),  has decided that he was going to branch out to other types of games.  To that end he has created Geek DÓ, the brand under which, BGG will now reside.  His newest Geek game site is Role Playing Game Geek (RPGG).  It’s just like BGG for table top role playing games, only a tad bit more complicated.  Mostly because of the subcategories that many table top role playing games need to be placed under.  For example, Dungeons and Dragons, alone, has four editions and each edition has tons of books under it.

It’s a fantastic site and a much needed site.  It’s a pain to try to find info on many role playing games.  Up until know when I wanted to read a review for an rpg I went to Rpg.net, but I’ve never really liked that site.  It’s very clunky and difficult to find things in, and the colors  on the site are a  bit off putting .  Now with RPGG it’s going to be so much easier and it’s a nicer brighter atmosphere.  I’ve already started helping out the data base by putting up pictures and things for the site.  There are a few thousand role playing games up on the site already and it’s growing by the minute.  It’s fantastic, it was love at first site (pause for the “boos”) .  I’ve already started to make a wish list and uploading all the games I own.

If you’re a gamer but aren’t a board gamer or an rpger, don’t worry. The next Geek database site Aldie is going to work on, will be Video Game Geek. You will soon be assimilated.

Might be burning out. Birthday get together. Magic: The Gathering game with Alesha

July 30, 2009 in BOARD GAMES, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

So I started work on a new crew last week.  I was helping out on another crew for about a week and a half.  The crew I’m on now is my next “official” crew.  Problem is, I think I should have taken it a little easier when helping out on the last crew because I’m really feeling burned out right now.  It doesn’t help that the art on the act we are starting on is really rough.  This means we pretty much have to  re-draw the whole act.  Our job is basically to “plus” the board. In other words, we add and finesse the acting, as well as make any big corrections the need to be done in order to make the story reel play well and be clear.  When we get a board that is so rough that we can’t use any of the original drawings, it slows us down to a crawl because it means, not only do we need to work on any revisions and add the extra drawing to scenes that need it, but we also need to go and re-draw the scenes that don’t need anything done to them as well.  We still have three more acts to get to after where done with the one we’re working on.  There is only three of us on the crew, we only get three weeks and we are NOT allowed overtime. I hope we don’t get too bogged down on this act so that we can get to the others. More importunately, I hope I don’t go into complete burn out so that I’m not completely useless.

FAMILY

We had to wait till this weekend to get the family together for my dad’s birthday.  We had a good time.  The kids had an especially good time.  Munchkin was having so much fun that when it was time to go, (at 10:00 pm) she didn’t want to leave.  She was really upset and didn’t even fall asleep on the way home.

We saw little Paulo and he’s sooo big now.  He likes to bounce so Deborah and Juan bought him a jumper.  He loves it.  It’s very funny to see him bouncing. We all had a good time.

BOARDGAMES

Things got a bit more interesting in Andy’s life, so he can’t come over to play with me on Fridays.  This kinda leaves me without a game night, which is really depressing.  Seeing that I had no one to play with anymore, Alesha decided to offer to play with me last Friday. We actually had a fantastic time.

We first played Lost Cities, mainly because I think it’s one of Alesha’s favorite games to play against me.  She wins every game we play. Having lost yet another game of Lost Cities against her, she let me choose the next game. I chose to play Magic: The Gathering. I had bought a Duel Deck box a while back. It contained two decks that where constructed to be played against one another.  The theme of the Decks where Divine versus Demonic.  Alesha took the Divine deck, which consisted of Angels, Paladins, clerics and a bunch of healing magic. This left me with the Demonic deck which consisted of demons, imps, fallen angels, and lots of life sucking, mean things.  I lost all three games we played.

The first game we played, I let Alesha win.  I got a ton a really good cards and I had spells in my hand that I could have activated in such a way that they would have given me an instant win. I chose NOT to play them.  I wanted Alesha to have a good time.  I also had an advantage since I know how to play the game while she was still trying to get used to it.  I wanted her to read her cards, get acquainted with them, remember the rules and generally enjoy the way the game played. In the end, she managed to win the first game while a had a hand of “killer” cards that would have won me the game easily.  In fact, I was so confident that my deck was better than her’s that I offered to switch decks with her after the game was over.  She refused.  She wanted to stick with her deck.

Turns out the first game we had played had been a lucky draw on my part. By the time the next game started not only was Alesha familiar with her deck and how it worked, but I had gotten a very crummy draw.  I just couldn’t get the cards I needed while Alesha just kept getting some really good cards.  Alesha suddenly began learning how to combine her cards to get their full effects. I had been planning to win that game.  I could barely keep my life points up.  The game was over fairly quick. Alesha had learned her deck fairly well by the time that game ended.  I was irked and wanted a rematch.  I had just gotten a bad draw that game.  I wanted to at least win one game.  So we played one more time.

I thought I had it in the bag the third game. I had gotten a pretty darn good draw.  It started off really good for me and I was playing the game to the best of my ability, no more letting her win. I had some mean little imps that where doing damage to her every turn. Then Alesha cast some nasty spells on my creatures and my game went down the tubes. I managed to stop her from summoning a powerful Angel but it didn’t do me much good. Specially since the rest of my guys had been enchanted by Alesha and she kept getting life back when she cast spells.  Meanwhile she smacked me upside the head with her Paladin who rode down the field  on a fancy white horse in armor.  She was playing Magic like she’d been doing it for years. Then she drew her best card out of her deck and the game was pretty much over.  With two points left, I also drew “my best card” which wasn’t really all that great because (since it was horrible demon) it would hurt me for 7 points of damage if I didn’t sacrifice a creature to it every turn.  I didn’t have anyone to sacrifice so I was going to lose no matter what.
Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic famous card

I think Alesha enjoyed trouncing me way too much.   I want a rematch, I KNOW I can win at least ONE game.

Alesha’s natural hair products. Our dads have birthdays. Not going to Comic Con this year

July 23, 2009 in Alesha's Business, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Tuesday we got a treat at work.  We were given free In N Out burgers for lunch (a popular hamburger drive thru in the U.S. for those of you who are international reader). It’s was great.  It made me very happy.  Hurray for free burgers.

I also started on the new crew I will be on Wednesday.

ALESHA’S BUSINESS

I haven’t really written about this before. Mostly because I wanted Alesha to get her site up and running before I did. That way, if someone was interested, they could order something online. What am I talking about?

For the last year or so Alesha has had her own business.  It’s called Butterfly Natural Hair Care and Alesha sells…well… hair care product (among other things).  Not just any hair care products, she sells hair care products that she makes herself.  Alesha has always been into these products.  Our bathroom looks like a warehouse for the stuff because she’s always kept buying them.  Well, she finally got frustrated from using products that instead of doing what they ought, actually ended up damaging her hair. That’s when she decided to make her own. She didn’t want to make any old kind  of hair products though.  She wanted to make sure that what she did was all natural. No bad chemicals that would damage her hair.  To that end she went out and researched all kinds of things in order to make her formulas work and still be all natural. Alesha was a Chemistry major before she changed it and became an English major.  This means she has some experience with chemicals and mixing things up. She spent months and months researching and testing the things out on herself before she finally found formulas that did exactly what she wanted them to do.

Turns out that she was not the only person who wanted these things.  When she told other people what she had done, they all wanted to try them out.  Next thing she new, she was making hair care products for other people.  It didn’t take long before she had a good amount of clients who kept asking her for more.

Everyone she sells to loves her products.  It’s really amazing to me how much people like them.  I’m very proud of her.  Here are some examples of the things she sells:

Face and Body Products
Shampoos
Conditioners
Hair Oils, Butters, and Rinses

Check out her site at: www.butterflyhaircare.com

And try out some out!

FAMILY

My father-in-laws birthday was this Saturday.  We went over to my in-law’s house and celebrated his birthday.  We brought a cake and ate crab legs while Alesha, my brother-in-law, his girlfriend and I played Bohnanza and Shadows over Camelot.  It was a good day.

On Monday, MY dad celebrated a birthday.  As of the time of this writing, we have yet to celebrate it officially, although when I spoke to him on Monday, he was at the Staple Center in LA with my brother and my mom, bowling.  It sounded like he was having a fantastic time.  I was a bit bummed because I was stuck at work. Still, I’m glad he was able to have a great birthday, with or without me.  This weekend we’re planning to do something. Probably go to a nearby park for a picnic.

Happy birthday DADS!

COMIC CON

Not gonna go to San Diego Comic Con this year. It starts today.  I’m really bummed out about it.  I was looking forward to it all year.  I’m not going because I can’t afford to go.  Our financial situation isn’t good this month.  Even though I can write off the whole thing, I need to be far more prudent with the finances as they are now and be more responsible.  That doesn’t mean that I have to like it. It really sux.

Those of you who WILL be attending and go to The Simpsons panel will get a special Comic Con exclusive little something to see. It’s very cool. I know because I saw it yesterday. Just thought I’d pass that on.

Finishing up the show a day earlier. Dante’s milestone. Caricature of me

July 16, 2009 in BLOGS, FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE  SIMPSONS NEWS

Turns out the show is in fantastic shape. We were told Friday night that they had upped our deadline a day.  This meant that instead of finishing our work on Tuesday evening we had to be done by Monday evening.  Thankfully, the show was is such good shape that the director wouldn’t have minded showing them the show as it stood on Friday.  As far as he was concerned,  anything we finished Monday would be icing.  It was great the be in that sort of situation.

FAMILY

Dante hit a milestone this weekend.  We converted his crib into a toddler bed.  He was VERY excited when he discovered what we had done. He bounce around and did a small little Dante dance before laying down  on the bed with his butt in the air.

The reason I thought I ought to do it was because Saturday morning, while Alesha and I where still in bed, Munchkin and Dante woke up.  They played in the room a little bit (Dante in his crib, Munchkin with the toys in the room) but after about ten minutes or so, Munchkin decided to leave the room.  She opened the door, got out and shut the door behind her leaving poor Dante trapped in his crib with no one to play with.  He began to cry.  Usually Dante is perfectly happy as long as his sister is there with him handing him toys. This was the first time Munchkin had every left the room while Dante was still in his crib.  I felt really bad for the poor boy.  He couldn’t even follow his sister out of the room. So I thought maybe it was time for him to be able to.

It was fun to watch him explore his new found freedom on the monitor, after I’d left the room. First thing he did when we put him to bed was get up and go over to play with toys.  Well, not really. He got up and touched a toy then went back in the bed.  Guess what he really wanted to do was know he could if he wanted to.

Of course, there was a few things that we had to teach him not to do, like get up during bedtime, go over to his sister’s bed and sit there, while his sister is trying to go to sleep.  He’s learning little by little.  He hasn’t fallen off the bed yet.  We have cushions on the carpet just in case.  I’m happy for the little guy.  He’s doing great. Unlike Munchkin when she was moved to a toddler bed, Dante hasn’t done any sleeping on the floor.

BLOGS

My friend Shane K. Sowell started up a blog last Month.  Shane was a storyboard artist on The Simpsons Movie. He was mostly over at the Fox studios.  At that point I was no longer doing storyboards and I worked with him doing story reel work. His blog came to my attention when he linked his blog to mine.  When I followed the link I discovered the following picture:

escobar.jpg

Now you know why I draw myself cute in all my cartoons.  Who want’s to looking at THAT in the cartoons? Seriously though, it cracked me up.  I really like the drawing.  I later discovered he had e-mailed me about it and I wrote him back my appreciation.  Interestingly, he had drawn his drawing from a picture he took of me at the Fox Lot during one of our lunch breaks.  It turns out that, it’s exactly the same picture I put up in my ABOUT ME section of this blog.  I’d forgotten he had take the picture and had given me a copy.  He got a kick out finding out I used his picture for my blog.  I’ve updated the ABOUT ME to credit him for the picture.

Check out the rest of his blog. He’s got another drawing of a fellow storyboard artist as well as many other drawings.

Thanks again for the drawing Shane.

4th of July. Alesha’s new obsession.

July 9, 2009 in FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, WRITING

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Not much to report really.  Deadline is slowly approaching and, as always, we don’t seem to be in good shape.  Still, we’ll make it.  Like we usually do.

FAMILY

July 3rd was my little brother’s birthday.  He’s now 30 something or other, I don’t remember.  Didn’t actually manage to celebrate his birthday until Sunday.  Didn’t really see him till then either.  Saturday the 4th was fun. Especially for Munchkin.  We spent the day at a big party at an uncle’s house and Munchkin played and had fun like a crazy girl.  Dante spent a lot of time with me, although there was a long time when he finally realized that being with me was the dullest thing he could be doing and he went off to have some fun with his sister. Dancing is one of Munchkin’s passions and near the end of the night, she spent hours doing it.  Then the fireworks started at a school down the block. We all watched the fireworks from the backyard.  Dante sat on my lap and was wowed by them.  It was great. Munchkin almost cried after it was over because she wanted them to keep going.

The highlight for me was playing a game of Magic: The Gathering with some friends at the end of the night.  It was a good time because I think we really let the flavor of the game’s theme push our imaginations.  It was neat to pretend we were casting spells.  It was fun also because it was the first time they had played the game and they liked it. After they go used to the rules, when they pulled out cards they understood, they go very excited. It was neat to see the game start clicking with them.

WRITING

In other news, Alesha spent the weekend obsessively researching and writing another novel manuscript. She couldn’t stop writing.

We had gotten into a conversation about novels, and the fantasy genre that’s hitting it big right now, namely, the “Vampire Romance” genre.  The genre has been around for years and the guys on the Dragon Page Podcast where predicting the genre was going to be dead by the end of the year, and that was a year ago.  It has only gotten bigger (and a bit tired).  Alesha was wondering what the next big thing would be.  Obviously, it’s impossible to predict. I just told her that it would be “Wizard Romance” novels.  I’m thinking that people will start getting tired of vampires eventually and might be looking for something similar but just different enough (whether or not I’m right is a different story).  I was thinking of something more in the lines of Jim Butcher‘s Harry Dresden books (Dresden isn’t a “Wizard Romance” book though). It’s an urban Fantasy wizard book. I told her an idea I had about something under that genre that I was thinking of running as a role playing game but was too lazy to do the research for.  She liked the idea and started the research on the spot. By mid morning the next day, she had done enough research that she could start writing. By the end of the day she had an outline. While still researching, she had written up to chapter 2 by the end of the 4th of July.  She ran the outline through me on the way home on the 4th. I gave her my two cents and she’s still going strong on it.  We’ll see how it goes. I’ve read the first three pages of the story and the prose in it is far superior than the other manuscript she’s written.  She’s getting so much better, it’s amazing. This will be her third novel manuscript.

Since she’s done all the work, I think I can take all that work and run the role playing game now.  Mwaa ha haa!
