The One Thing That Would Make The GOTHAM TV Show Epic.

September 4, 2014 in TV SHOWS

TV SHOW – The One Thing That Would Make The GOTHAM TV Show Epic.

The One Thing That, If They Do, Would Make The GOTHAM TV Show Epic 02Lots of people seem to be very excited about the TV show Gotham. Lots of people, except me. That said, there is ONE thing they can do to make me excited to watch it. This is an article about that one thing.

In social media, I’ve made it clear that I wasn’t very interested in watching the new Gotham TV show. Everything I’ve seen or read about it doesn’t seem to interest me.

Thing is, I’d LIKE to be excited about it.  It’s another show based on a superhero comic. But there’s no superhero in it!

Below is some videos that previews the show, and explain what it’s about. You can watch them, if you want, so you can understand what I’m going to be talking about here:

http://youtu.be/Xjn_n4ixpMo

http://youtu.be/8oI_P4xGURY

http://youtu.be/xFfPxYEhKic

My Thoughts on the Show Based on the Preview

The One Thing That, If They Do, Would Make The GOTHAM TV Show Epic 03The show looks well produced, well acted, and well written.

BUT, from what I can see so far, the first thing that sticks out here and the worst thing about this show is that it DOESN’T have Batman in it. Bruce Wayne is eight years old and traumatized. He seems to be a side character in the show.

What does this show seems to be about? Basically, what I got from the video above is that the show is Smallville for the Gotham villains. Or maybe The Sopranos or Breaking Bad for Gotham villains.

Which actually makes it sound  interesting enough, except the video really emphasizes the police procedural aspect of the show. Which I could care less about, and it’s the one thing I don’t understand most.

They try to emphasize how this good cop, Jim Gordon, is going to make a difference in Gotham city. Which, if he manages to do, there’s no point in Batman showing up to save the city.

So really the show is about how this good cop can’t really do anything. And if he manages to succeed in doing something good, it would actually cause even worse villains to come into power, making the city worse.

This means the show is about how Jim Gordon, messed up and failed Gotham city. Why would I want to watch that show?

As a superhero nerd, when I hear the title “Gotham” for a TV show, I don’t think “Police procedural” or “Smallville for villains,” I think, BATMAN.

I’ve been thinking hard about the premise of this show. The way it’s being sold, doesn’t appeal to me one bit. BUT what WOULD make me WANT to watch this show?

I came to one conclusion.

The One Thing That Would Make the GOTHAM Show Epic

The One Thing That, If They Do, Would Make The GOTHAM TV Show Epic 01More of a Bruce Wayne Focus.

They can keep the Jim Gordon stuff and the villain stuff BUT as a superhero nerd, what I want to see is an emphasis on young Bruce Wayne. This is actually the perfect time to really focus on him.

This would be when he first starts getting the idea that he should become a vigilante. Early in the show, by the first, second or third episode, the idea to become one should take seed. That way the rest of the series could be about his obsession to become one.

I want to see young rich Bruce Wayne:

  • Learn to fight – he hires one or many of the best fighters in the world to teach him to fight. Either as Bruce Wayne or using an alias.
  • Learns to become an escape artist – Don’t know how but he needs to.
  • Learns gymnastics – He kinda need this too.
  • Learn  engineering, gadget making, chemistry, etc. – Lot’s of way for him to do this.
  • Learns guerrilla warfare – Maybe he joins a military school or hires a mercenary to teach him all he knows, or maybe Alfred is ex-military.
  • Learns Detective work – This is when it starts fitting in more with what is already in the Gotham TV show. He can learns detective work from Jim Gordon somehow.
  • Learns to be a Hacker – This is ideal so that he could actually start messing and thwarting villains without revealing who he is by doing it in cyberspace.

All this stuff is set up for the ultimate point of all this stuff, young Bruce Wayne would be like a proto-Batman. A kind of “Robin-in-training.” He hacks and occasionally goes out into the city and does things in secret to help the police catch the bad guys, even as a kid.

The One Thing That, If They Do, Would Make The GOTHAM TV Show EpicWhich is cool because is lays the foundation for why he doesn’t see a problem training Dick Grayson to become Robin. He remembered what he used to do when he was younger.

Gordon would only know him by his hacker name “DK” or “Dark Knight” or some other Batman like nickname. Gordon thinks Bruce is an adult, but he’s just a really smart kid, doing things to help him out.

That way, Bruce is doing Batman type things, which makes any success that Gordon has much more successful. And for superhero nerds like me, we get the secret joy of seeing a young Bruce Wayne be cool and Batman like.

And as the show goes on, you see the actor grow up and become more and more Batman like.

THIS would be the thing I want to see in this Gotham show. The young boy, Bruce Wayne, training and secretly helping the cops do good. Making Gotham safer, learning and failing, but slowly becoming a badass at a young age.

That would be cool, and I think that’s what seems to be missing in the trailers and previews that I’ve seen of Gotham so far.

I think that’s what Batman fans watching the show really want to see as well.

Are you Going to Watch GOTHAM?

What do you think? Would you like to see that in the Gotham TV show? Do you like what you’ve seen so far and don’t want to see what I suggested.

Do you think it looks fine the way it is? Let me know. Sound off on the comments below.

Also, if the stuff I’ve written happens in the show, let me know so I can start watching it because I’m not going to be watching this show based on what I’ve seen so far.

If You Watch Arrow, You may Enjoy These Other Green Arrow Shows.

July 10, 2014 in SUPERHEROES, TV SHOWS

SUPERHEROES/TV SHOWS – What to Watch if you Like the ARROW TV Show.

If You Watch Arrow, You may Enjoy These Other Green Arrow ShowsThe TV show Arrow has introduced Green Arrow to a larger audience than the comics have. If it’s made you a fan of the character and makes you crave a bit more of him, I’ll show you where to get more.

Besides the comics, which I recommend, there are other shows Green Arrow makes an appearance in that you might be interested in. So I’ve made a list.

Here’s what to watch if you like Arrow.

DC Showcase: Green Arrow

This a short animated film starring Green Arrow.

While picking up Black Canary at the airport, Count Vertigo and the Merlin show up and are up to no good.

If you’re curious about how different the Arrow TV show is to the Green Arrow character as he’s originally been written in the comics, this is a great way to find out.

Green Arrow in Justice League Unlimited (JLU)

In JLU, you will get much deeper into the character of Green Arrow than you do in the animated short above. You especially, get to see how well he interacts with other superheroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

He’s a very entertaining guy on his own but when he meets Black Canary in the show, it gets even more fun.

If you’re interested, here are the episodes of the shows where he is most prominently featured:

  • “Initiation”
  • “Fearful Symmetry”
  • “The Cat and the Canary”
  • “Double Date”
  • “Flashpoint”
  • “Divided We Fall”
  • “To Another Shore”
  • “Patriot Act”
  • “Far From Home”

 Green Arrow in Young Justice

My favorite animated superhero cartoon also features Green Arrow, although, not a lot. He only make a substantial appearance in two episodes in season 2 of the show, and one is very dramatic. Those episodes are:

  • “Salvage”
  • “Satisfaction”

The thing that makes Green Arrow worth watching in the show is his relationship with Roy Harker, his protégé. Roy in Young Justice reminds me a lot of the Roy in the Arrow TV show.

I think, as a fan of Arrow, you might find this version of Roy fascinating. Especially when you discover what happens to him in season 2.

http://youtu.be/-5CEAYV0AzU

 Green Arrow in Smallville

If you’re more interested in a live action version of Green Arrow, you can always give the Green Arrow of Smallville a try.

This version of the character was played by Justin Heartley and is no where near as dark and brooding as the Oliver in Arrow Still, he’s very much the antihero of the show.

That said, he’s no less interesting and heroic. He’s also quite a bit wittier and much more humorous.

Green Arrow made his appearance beginning is season 6 of Smallville and he stayed on till the show’s end. His role in the show is pretty significant .

I recommend giving this Green Arrow a try as well.

What Did I Miss?

Did I miss anything?  Let me know on the comments below.

Otherwise, what do you think? Have you watched any of the things above? What do you think of my suggestions?  Comment below.

Three Reasons ENDGAME is a Great Mystery Show for Gamers.

May 8, 2014 in TV SHOWS

TV SHOW – Three Reasons Endgame is a Great Mystery Show for Gamers.

Three Reasons ENDGAME is a Great Mystery Show for GamersI found a great mystery show that appeals to the gamer in me. It’s called Endgame and I thought I’d write about why it’s such a great mystery show for gamers.

I’m not a big fan of mystery shows. I know it’s one of the most popular story genres in the world. I’ve just never really been captivated by it.

The new BCC Sherlock show has been the only mystery show to really have me coming back for more. Mostly because the portrayal of Sherlock is so well done.

Well, I’m signed up for Hulu Plus and they often run ads for a show called Endgame. It immediately caught my eye because it was about a gamer. A chess grandmaster in fact.

I put it on to see what I thought, and ended up watching all 13 episodes back to back. I loved it.

Not only where the characters great and the mysteries fascinating, but it totally appealed to the gamer in me. So here’s the three reasons, if you’re a gamer, it might appeal to you too:

1. It’s Show About a Chess Grandmaster

Three Reasons ENDGAME is a Great Mystery Show for Gamers. (2)The most high profile and respected professional gamers in the world are Chess Grandmasters.

These people have dedicated their lives to playing and mastering the game of Chess. Often these people are little eccentric.

The Grandmaster in this show, played by actor Shawn Boyle, is no exception. To make things worse, this guys is suffering mental trauma after seeing his fiancé was murdered outside of the hotel he was staying in. This has caused him to be afraid of stepping out of the hotel he’s in.

The show revolves around him solving mysteries without ever leaving the hotel. Often using his friends that work in the hotel to help him out.

There’s even a student who helps him out for the “payment” of playing Chess games against the Grandmaster.

2. It Features a Few Games

Three Reasons ENDGAME is a Great Mystery Show for Gamers. (1)As you would expect from a game featuring a Chess Grandmaster, Chess is played quite a bit. That said, it isn’t the only game played in the show.

Poker, Checkers (played blindfolded), Chaturanga, and a fictitious MMORPG are also played on the show.

Most of the time though, Chess is played. And in one particularly great show, the Chess games are literally a matter of life and death.

3. It Shows the Benefits of Being a Gamer

Three Reasons ENDGAME is a Great Mystery Show for Gamers. (1)Playing Chess has given this guy a keen eye and a very good memory.

The show really shows the benefits of having sharpened his mind playing Chess. It also shows how being good at the one game can come in handy when playing others.

Although the amazing nature of the Grandmasters abilities are a little on the fantastic side, it’s still a lot of fun to watch how this man’s mind has benefited from years of playing Chess.

So much so, that it made me want to start playing more Chess, ha ha ha.

Really Fun and Worth Watching

I really recommend Endgame. Especially if you’re like me and love table top games. That said, if you’re mostly a video gamer, you’d still get a kick out this show. It may be an analog game but it’s a game none the less.

It’s fun to see a show where gaming is such a benefit.

How Doctor Who, is Like Bugs Bunny.

November 14, 2013 in TV SHOWS

TV SHOWS- How Doctor Who, is Like Bugs Bunny.

How Doctor Who is like Bugs Bunny

Bugs Bunny, Superheroes, Cugel the Clever, and The Odyssey are not exactly the first things that come to mind when thinking about Doctor Who. But they all have a connection.

In this week’s post I’m going to write about this.

You can either watch the video below or you can read the post.  It’s the same thing, only I draw a picture in the video:

(Some of the links below are affliliate links. Thanks for your support.)

Explaining  The Doctor

I was trying to explain the appeal of Doctor Who to a friend of mine who hadn’t watched the show.  I was a bit lost for words, I wasn’t sure how to describe the show.

I mean, I could just say,

“It’s about a Time Lord and his companion who travel through space and time and have great adventures,” but that doesn’t quite cut it.

I would then try to describe the character of The Doctor comparing him to a type of hero they might be familiar with.  That way they had a “feel” of what the character was like. But then, I couldn’t think of any.

Was that why he was so appealing? He was so unique that he created his own archetype?  This got me thinking.

Why did I like him so much? What did I like about the show.  What appealed to me?

Doctor Who is a Superhero

Well, for starters, his stories are Superhero stories.

What I mean by this is that, Doctor  Who is written in stories that Superheroes would feel perfectly at home in.  Some incredibly powerful villain, has some sort of plan to destroy, enslave, or conquer, the Earth, some race of people, Time itself, or the entire Universe and it’s up to The Doctor to stop it.

It’s something that you imagine Superman doing. But instead, you have some dude in a suit, tie and a screwdriver, with no superpowers at all, doing the job.

But how? How does he do it? Most superheroes end up having some kind of super fight to get the job done, but The Doctor has no powers.

Well, he does it with his wits.  The Doctor is really smart and really clever.  He solves these super villainous dilemmas with his brain.

Is there any other hero that does something like this?  Is this a preexisting heroic archetype?

The Doctor and Bug Bunny

At first, I thought, no…but then I remembered Bugs Bunny.

Bugs isn’t strong.  He often gets bullied and picked on. When the antagonists pushes him too far though, he pushed back.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8_GVfPuw4M

Not with his muscle but with his mind.

He outwits his opponents and makes them look like fools.  This is very reminiscent of what Doctor Who does.

Okay so now we have two characters who are similar Bugs and The Doctor.  But are they it?

Doctor Who and Cugel the Clever

Well…no. Actually, Jack Vance wrote a fantasy character that I really love named: Cugel the Clever. He is a character in the Dying Earth series.

He’s a really wimpy, underhanded jerk and a thief who gets himself in all kinds of horrible situations, but then he would have to think his way out of them.

The personality of this character different than that of The Doctor. Cugel is no hero, but the archetype is the same.

So how far does this archetype go?

The Doctor and The Odyssey

Odysseus/Ulysses from The Odyssey is exactly this archetype. This famous tactician of the Trojan War got into all kinds of dangerous situations which he couldn’t get out off just by fighting. He would get into dangers that would do Superman proud.

He used his wits to get out of all those situations, just like Bugs, Cugel and The Doctor.

The Doctor’s Archetype

So it turns out, The Doctor does have an Archetype and it’s a very old one, which explains why he works so well.

I personally think that the ultimate appeal of this Archetype is the, “that could potentially be me!”  factor.  You think to yourself, maybe if I’m clever enough, I could be just like that guy. Heck, I know I want to be as clever The Doctor.

Well, realizing this has made me better able to explain The Doctor to people. Now I days,  when I describe Doctor Who to someone who is unfamiliar with the show, I say this,

“The Doctor is like a Superhero without any powers, who fight super villains through out time and space, by using his wit and cleverness. Like Odysseus from the Odyssey.”

And you know what I think would be cool? If at some point they write an episode  where The Doctor  teams up with Odysseus. That would be epic.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Vs. DC’s Arrow

November 7, 2013 in TV SHOWS

TV SHOWS – Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Vs. DC’s Arrow

Who’s better, Marvel or DC?

Marvels Agents of SHIELD Vs DCs ArrowMarvel and DC have been rivals for a long time. They both have a universes full of unique superheroes a they’re in constant competition for the same audiences. They have been for years.

Now a days, their competition has gone beyond comics.  They’re rivalry has extended to movies and TV shows.

I’m going to be writing about this in this post. You can either watch the video or read the post. It’ the same thing…only, I draw in the video:

(Some of the links below are affiliate links. Thanks for your support.)

Who is Winning What?

As of the time of this writing, Marvel is beating DC with their live action movies. , and of course, The Avengers, are kicking butt at the box office.

Meanwhile, DC has only three Batman movies and one Superman movie. And the Superman movie turned out to be very divisive. On top of that, they’re desperately shoving Batman into the Superman sequel in order to try to catch up to the success of The Avengers.  It comes across as sloppy and rushed.

On the other hand, DC superhero animated movies and TV shows are running circles around anything Marvel is producing.  It’s been doing this for years. Marvel is only now trying get some kind of serious animated cartoons going. I have yet to be impressed with what they’ve come up with.

Now Marvel and DC have started another battle…

Marvel and DC’s Fight over Live Action TV

Smallville was on for ten years. DC had a superhero presence on TV for years.  It was the only game in town and personally, I loved that show.

When Smallville ended, Arrow took the baton. It’s now on it’s second season.

After the enormous success of The Avengers, Marvel decided to join in, with their show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Headed by Joss Whedon, Director of The Avengers, Serenity, The Cabin In The Woods. Creator of shows like: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, and Firefly. And web series like, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, this show has some pedigree.

Meanwhile Arrow, is a step up from Smallville and is doing some very interesting things.

So  how do these two shows tack up to one another?

To be fair, Arrow has been on the air longer, there have only been, as of the time of this writing, six episodes of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired.  I’ve only seen four so far.

I’m going to compare the first four episodes of Arrow to the first four episodes of  Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so see with company has it “right,” Marvel, or DC.

The First Four Episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agents of SHIELD vs ArrowI have to say, the first episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. was fun with a lot of promise.  A tad bit too snarky, and it had a few redundant characters. But overall, it had a lot of promise.  The promise being, that we were probably going to see a lot of superpowered characters from the Marvel universe, possibly making an appearance.

After watching the first four episodes, I can say, this is not the case. The show has not really had any “fan service” at all when it comes to seeing more characters make cameos from the Marvel Universe.  It’s mostly about the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on assignments that may really didn’t deal with super humans, except in the pilot.

So far it hasn’t really delivered. And some of the episodes, like the second episode, really comes across as low budget show.

I really want to like this show but so far, it’s pretty “meh.”  Shows like Alphas or Warehouse 13 have covered similar territory in a better way.

Marvel has a huge universe to plunder from and they seem to be ignoring it.

I hope they remedy this soon.

The First Four Episodes of Arrow.

Agents of SHIELD vs Arrow 01As for Arrow, after watching the pilot, I was hooked.  It was just good.  It didn’t have the promise of a good show, the pilot WAS a good show.  Not only that, all four of the first episodes where really great to watch.  There wasn’t a bad one in the bunch.

And “fan service?” In the first episode we got to see Deathstroke‘s mask, a character from the comics.  By episode three, they had introduced Deadshot, another character from the comics.

Arrow has taken the great stuff that the last three seasons of Smallville got right and plussed them up.

It’s lit well. I doesn’t look cheap. It has attitude and flair. I like the characters.  I like the struggle.s between them. I like the way the stories unfold and the take they’ve taken with the character.

I’m addicted to this show.  I have yet to be disappointed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCpTR9hwBhk

Which one is better Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Arrow?

Well obviously, from my description of Arrow, it’s Arrow.  So far, in four episodes Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has promised more than it’s delivered.

While Arrow has delivered from episode one and hasn’t stopped.

Watch them and decide for yourself.

As for me, so far, between Marvel and DC, DC is doing a better job with their live action TV superhero shows than Marvel is.

Dave Filoni CLONE WARS Animated Vs Genndy Tartakovsky CLONE WARS Animated.

October 3, 2013 in ANIMATION, TV SHOWS

ANIMATION/TV SHOWS – Dave Filoni Clone Wars Animated Vs Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars Animated.

CG Animated Clone Wars Animated. The Simpsons:

“The decision is final. Tabled, this motion is. Or is it?” ~ Yoda

Last week I talked about the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars animated Cartoon, today I’m going to be talking about the Dave Filoni Clone Wars animated cartoon and comparing the two a bit.

You can either watch the video or read the transcription below.  I’ve also posted artwork and embedded a video of one of what the show is like:

Some of the links below are affiliate links. Thanks for your support.

What I Generally Think About the Prequels

CG Animated Clone Wars AnimatedI started watching the The Clone Wars animated cartoons. I’m not a big fan of The Phantom Menace, I’m not a big fan of the Attack of the Clones movie, and I’m not a big fan of Revenge of the Sith, but I am a big fan of the Genndy Clone Wars animated cartoons, the Genndy Tartakovsky cartoons.

Then, I heard that they were going to make an animated TV show. I was like, that’s cool, I hope it looks like the Genndy shorts because that would be awesome! And if they just do it like this, it’ll be like the best animated cartoon ever.

Well, they didn’t do it like this. They ended up going CG. I mean, I was kind of disappointed because I really, really enjoy the Genndy animated Clone Wars cartoon.

My Personal Background with Dave Faloni

CG Animated Clone Wars Animated3One of the King of the Hill alums, Dave Filoni, ended up getting hired for it and it’s really interesting because we knew him at Film Roman because King of the Hill was produced at Film Roman, which is the studio that I work for on The Simpsons, and we were basically in the same building.

I kind of knew Dave because he was a real good friend of my father, who was a background designer on King of the Hill. And, during the Halloween parties at work, he almost always did some kind of Star Wars thing, or something really elaborate with Star Wars, or something else.

But he was known to be this incredible Star Wars nerd and suddenly he is actually helping produce this show, so it’s like, that’s really interesting.

The Pilot Episode is Weak

I’m sad to say that the pilot episode which was released theatrically, I think, was pretty lousy for this is a taste of what’s coming up and how, and this TV show’s going to be awesome because of this! And then you watch this movie and it’s like *SAD TRUMPET SOUND*, you know. It’s like it wasn’t all that good.

Genndy Clone Wars vs. Filoni Clone Wars

CG Animated Clone Wars Animated1It was CG. It kind of looks a little bit like the Genndy’s designs, but the Genndy designs were much more pushed and I like them more. The designs in this CG version were a little disappointing after watching the Genndy thing.

I keep comparing the two, and I really shouldn’t because they’re two different styles and things like that. But – I don’t know why, but I just keep going back to the Genndy, because I guess that’s my first exposure to this style.

They did push the characters, and I think that’s one of the best things about this show is how pushed and unrealistic-looking they look. It’s very caricatured, very cartoony, and that’s one of the things that I liked.

So, I watched this movie and I wasn’t impressed with the story. And, I was like well, meh, okay, but let me give it a chance because I like Star Wars and I need my Star Wars fix, right? So, I started watching the actual series.

Okay, so there’s five seasons, I’ve only watched four out the five as of the time of this recording. After watching what I’ve watched, I have to admit, I got sold.

After I watched the first season, I was like, that was really cool. Like, they had some really, really good, interesting stories in there.  So, I got the second season. The second season was even better. And, the third season was even better.

The Style of the Show

CG Animated Clone Wars Animated4They just keep building on these things, and they just keep doing all these things that I just find fascinating, and it’s incredible. Now, not every show is a hit. It’s really inconsistent as far as story arcs.

They attempt to have like three- or four-episode story arcs, where it’s just, they’re in a planet and something’s happening, and so it’s thirty minutes per episode. And by the time you watch three episodes, you kind of get like, almost like a mini-movie. And there’s like an arc, and then they just change an environment, and then something else happens for a couple of episodes, and then that’s the end of that.

I find that very cool. I like that style of storytelling. They explore the characters more. It’s amazing what they can come up with as far as stories because this is supposed to take place between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, and they fill it up with all kinds of really fantastic stories.

Unfortunately almost always, any time Jar-Jar shows up in the cartoon, it’s gonna be a pretty lousy series of episodes.

There’s some drop-dead fantastic stories. There’s one that – if you’re a fan of Dune, they totally play with the Bene Gesserit kind of thing and the Water of Life, and all that stuff, and I think that’s great.

Did you Watch This?

CG Animated Clone Wars Animated2If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’re already watching this. I don’t even have to sell the idea of watching these cartoons, but if you are iffy about wanting to watch it or not wanting to watch it or not knowing if these things are any good, yeah. If your like that guy, you’ve got to watch the cartoon.

It’s a lot of fun. It’s a type of animated cartoon I wish they’d do more of. I like the dramatic action-adventure-type cartoons. And this is the stuff that I get drawn into more, especially because, you know, it’s arguably science fiction, it’s more like science fantasy. It’s a lot of fun.

I highly recommend it. There’s some stuff in it that’s just like, that is so good, you say, “Oh my gosh, that’s cool.”

So, let me know, have you watched this whole series? I know that’s something awesome happens in season five with one of the characters, and I’m dying to go find out what happens. I’m rushing through to watch it all so I can watch the fifth season.

Have you seen the show, do you like it? Let me know. If you haven’t seen it, would you be willing to? And why haven’t you watched it? I’d like to know actually if you haven’t seen the show, and what’s keeping you from watching it. That’ll be a really interesting conversation.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Awesome Clone Wars Animated Cartoons

ANIMATION – Genndy Tartakovsky’s Awesome Clone Wars Animated Cartoons

Genndy Tartakovsky's Awesome Clone Wars Animated CartoonsThe Simpsons Quote:

Comic Book Guy: Worst Cosmic Wars ever! I will only see it three more times. Today.

So, more action-adventure cartoons from me, what a surprise! All right, so today I’m going to be talking about Star Wars: Clone Wars animated 2D directed by Genndy.

You can either watch the video or read the transcription below.  There’s a link an embedded video later down this post with a fantastic Jedi fight scene:

What is This?

I like these. My kids love these! This is the original Clone Wars animated cartoon. It’s all 2D. It was directed by Genndy Tartakovsky. Originally they were just webisodes on Cartoon Network.

And, by the way, Genndy was the director of Hotel Transylvania and the creator of Samurai Jack. So – but he’s directed quite a few things, and one of the things he directed was this.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Awesome Clone Wars Animated CartoonsThe art, the designs for these cartoons are incredible.

The first series of web episodes, they were just flashy. You got to see the Jedi do stuff that you only dreamed – let me put it this way, the movies didn’t quite capture how awesome Jedi were in this cartoon.

But these, they’re really dramatic, and it’s really exciting, and I love the designs, and it’s really flat. This is what 2D animation can do, and how exciting it can be, and it’s fantastic. It really is a great, great cartoon.

The Second Series

Genndy Tartakovsky's Awesome Clone Wars Animated Cartoons3Then, they were able to do another set of web episodes when the – I’m not sure when, after Attack of the Clones? The first ones where done before the Attack of the Clones live action movie came out, and the second one was after the Clones movie came out.

These things were  supposed to tie into Revenge of the Sith. This is much better than Revenge of the Sith.

It turned out that this is just a fantastic animated cartoon, and, again, fantastic artwork. The action is incredible. I can’t recommend these cartoons enough.

My Kid’s Reactions to These Cartoons

My wife sets up movie nights for my kids, right? So, they tend to pick stuff to watch and, very often, one of my sons picks this series to watch.

To them, this is Star Wars. They don’t watch the live action, they don’t watch any of the cartoons, they don’t watch anything. But this, this, to them, is Star Wars. It’s really interesting.

Have You Watched This?

Star Wars fans you’ve probably seen this already. You probably own this already. If you don’t own it, you’re missing out. This is really, really, fantastic. This is what Star Wars should have been, right, at least the first movies?

So, yeah, I highly recommend Star Wars: Clone Wars if you haven’t seen it.

Why You Owe it to Yourself to Watch Legend of Korra

September 19, 2013 in ANIMATION, TV SHOWS

ANIMATION – Why You Owe it to Yourself to Watch Legend of Korra

Why you should watch legend of KorraThe Simpsons Quote:

Akira: We learn karate, so that we need never use it.

Bart: Um, excuse me, sir. I already know how not to hit a guy. Can we break out the nunchucks?

I often talk about how much I like action-adventure cartoons. I’ve recently spoken about Tron: Uprising.

Today, I’m going to be talking about this other action-adventure cartoon, one that is actually more martial arts based, it is incredible, and that would be Avatar: The Legend of Korra – Book One: Air, from Nickelodeon first season.

I talk about this in the video below.  You can either watch it or you can read the transcription under it (which has pictures and I embedded a trailer so you can see what the show looks like down there):

My History With the Avatar Series

I didn’t watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. I’ve heard it’s fantastic. I’ve watched half the first season. I don’t know what it is. I’ll watch it, I’ll eventually get through it, but there was something about the quirkiness of the comedy with what seemed to me, was really trying really hard to rip off Miyazaki, and I don’t know what it was, it just didn’t strike me, so I didn’t follow it.

I’ve heard really great things, and I’ve been watching the show, and I think it’s fine.

It doesn’t blow me away, I haven’t gotten to the good parts, apparently, but I’ll eventually keep watching it. I’m kind of upset that Netflix no longer has it streaming, because that’s the way I started watching it, but it’s in my queue.

Do You Need To Watch the First Series to Enjoy This One?

Why You Owe it to Yourself to Watch Legend of Korra3That said, I just went on and just straight up started watching The Legend of Korra. Not having seen the entire run of the first incarnation of The Last Airbender, I can tell you right now that you do not need to watch Airbender to enjoy this show.

You kind of understand that a lot of this other stuff happened in the past, and you kind of know that it’s in another show, so you don’t have to worry about it, you can watch it on your own time and find out the back story of some of the characters. You do not need to watch the whole thing. I think it just makes it better if you have.

Why Watch Korra?

That said, this series is incredible. The art, the draftsmanship for the characters in this cartoon, is fantastic. The designs are great.

They’re very influenced by Japanese cartoons and animation. These are actually very, very attractive, very beautifully, well-drawn characters.

It takes place years, after the Avatar series. It takes place in a 1920s-type environment where there’s cars and machines, but then you’ve got all these incredible martial arts, fantastic fight scenes.

Why You Owe it to Yourself to Watch Legend of KorraThe story of the show, Korra being the new Avatar who can control all the elements, as opposed to all the other martial artists in the world that could only control one. It’s about her going into a new environment and having to deal with being in a new city, and the build-up and the tension and the drama starts up fast, and it doesn’t let up.

This is how they ought to make action-adventure TV shows more. This is how it’s done.

Korra Vs. Young JusticeWhy You Owe it to Yourself to Watch Legend of Korra1

I’ve talked about Young Justice before. I have to say Korra beats  Young Justice, as far as drama and cohesiveness. The quality of the work is as good as Young Justice.

This story beats  Young Justice because it’s a little bit more concentrated and a little bit more cohesive than Young Justice, who tended to be just a touch episodic.

This is rock solid. I don’t think there’s one bad episode in this series. If you haven’t seen it, if you like things like Kung Fu Panda or anything that’s even remotely action-adventure, martial arts, if you’re into kung fu, if you’re into good, high drama, fantasy, exciting shows, this is really the show for you to watch.

Have You Seen Legend of Korra

All right, so, if you’ve seen Korra, and I know there’s a huge fan base for this show, if you’ve seen it, let me know, and let me know what you think.

And, if you haven’t seen it, and you decide to watch it because of my recommendation, let me know. I want to know what you think about this show. All right, so I’ll talk to you next time.

Why You Should Watch Duck Tales

September 12, 2013 in ANIMATION, TV SHOWS

ANIMATION – Why You Should Watch Duck Tales

Why You Should Watch Duck TalesThe Simpsons Quote:

“Damn that Pennybags. Between him and Scrooge McDuck all the best ankle is taken.”  ~ Mr. Burns

So, growing up in the late ’80s, early ’90s, there was one cartoon that I used to watch all the time because I couldn’t get enough of it, even in reruns, and that cartoon was DuckTales.

I talk about this in the video below.  You can either watch it or you can read the transcription below (it has pictures and I embedded the opening credit down there):

Some of the links below are Affiliate Links. Thanks for your support

Loosely Based on a Comic Book

I really looked forward to watching DuckTales.

Now, it’s really interesting, because, DuckTales is loosely based on Carl Barks’ Scrooge McDuck comics from the 1940s, and, when they started animating DuckTales, at first, it really caught my eye because it was Indiana Jones-ish kind of adventures, but with the Disney duck.

That’s pretty much the way the comic was, except this was a slightly changed adaptation of those cartoons.

I picked up a copy of the DVD box set a year ago, maybe, just because I had fond memories.

I didn’t like the second season, what was it, I don’t know if there was a second season or if it was a third. I’m not quite sure. I know that there was a run, which is this what I own. It’s the DuckTales run I like the most.

There was a second run of the show that was actually of lesser quality.

What I Think of the Show Now

Once I picked the DVD set up, and I started watching them with my kids, I discovered they hold up so well, and they’re so well-animated and so well-written, and it’s amazing how good this show is, and it’s still fantastic.

Why you should watch DuckTalesYou’ve got stuff, they riff on 1,001 Arabian Nights, they go, they fight Vikings, there’s magic in it, they go into outer space, it’s just like – it’s fantastic adventures, there are superheroes in it, I mean. It’s amazing how well-written, and how much fun this show is packed with. I’m blown away.

If you’ve got kids, or even if you don’t have kids, and if you want a really cool action-adventure, fun, family-friendly, exciting, funny cartoon to watch that isn’t the norm, I don’t think there’s anything that even comes close to matching a cartoon like this now. Adventure Time, sort of, you know, I don’t know.

Why you should watch DuckTales02

This is fantastic, I mean, high quality, it still holds up, it’s really fantastic.

If you haven’t seen this, you owe it to yourself to see it, and if you have seen this, you owe it to yourself to re-watch them because they’re that good.

Have You Watched This Show?

If you’ve seen this show recently, let me know. Let me know what you think. I’d like to talk to you about it, it’s great.
