Capturing Value From Your Reference: Tips And Approach

September 6, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

VIDEOS/ART- Capturing Value From Your Reference: Tips And Approach

If you’re drawing from reference and you begin shading, only to have your drawing come out…less than natural looking, you’re not alone.  When you’re learning to add rending, this is a very common thing.

The question is, what can you do about it? What are you not seeing? What are you doing wrong?

In this video I try to give you tips that will capture the look that you’re looking for. Here I’ll cover:

  • How we see
  • Line vs tone
  • The steps you need to do before you begin rendering
  • Breaking up your values simply
  • Seeing planes.
  • The rules of thumb about shading the light areas vs the dark areas.

Grid Drawing Tips and Advice

August 30, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

VIDEOS/ART – Grid Drawing Tips and Advice

When it comes to getting an accurate observational drawing from another source like a photograph, no method is more accurate than using the grid.

When using a grid, you draw a grid of squares above a source, like a photo you’re trying to copy. Then you draw a grid on the paper you’re going to draw on that is an exact version, a smaller version, or a larger version of the grid you put on your source. It’s a very ancient technique.

The benefit of this is breaking down a drawing in digestible chunks. Also, it gives the artist more information to compare and observe from in order to get a more accurate drawing.

This technique is excellent for beginners who want to get their observation skills to the next level.  It’s almost foolproof…almost.   There are ways that it can go wrong.

In this video I go over a few tips when using a grid, such as:

  • What size grid you should use
  • Why it’s handy to add coordinates
  • Recommendations for subject matter when starting out
  • What to look for as you draw
  • How to approach drawing facial features

Drawing Lara Croft From Digital To Traditional: Part 04

August 23, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEOS – Drawing Lara Croft From Digital To Traditional: Part 04

Once all my preliminary coloring is done, it’s time for the final piece.  I start by printing out a non-photo blue version of the drawing to work off of.  This, as you will see in this video, will be hand inked.  The rest is a matter of finishing the postcard.

In this video you will see:

  • How I put down the first, preliminary ink line.
  • How I use the thumbnails to work on the final drawing
  • How I layer the markers to get the effects I want
  • How I lay down the final ink line.

As before, there’s a Patreon Exclusive real time version of this drawing over on my Patreon:

ART/VIDEOS – Drawing Lara Croft From Digital To Traditional: Part 03

Coloring a drawing using markers can be hit or miss if you don’t have a lot of experience with them.  If you need make sure you get the results you want, the best thing to do is to make a few color comps.

In this video, you can watch me do just that.  You can see:

  • How I build up my colors
  • How I figure out what colors to use.
  • What colors to lay down in what order.
  • How I get rich looking skin tones with my markers.

And just as I did with part 01 and 02, there’s you can watch the real time video for a more in depth look at the drawing process by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/lara-croft-color-20720941

  • Learning about sketchbooks and seeing which ones may be good for what you need them for.
  • Also the story of how I ended redrawing last month’s postcard.
  • My journey into painting on paper with watercolor

Drawing Lara Croft From Digital To Drawn On Paper: Part 02

August 2, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

VIDEOS/ART – Drawing Lara Croft From Digital To Drawn On Paper: Part 02

The final digital Lara Croft drawing starts in earnest, in this video.  Not only that, but I try something completely knew that I’d never tried before.  Namely, I use a CG model to draw over.

Clipstudio Paint has the ability to import CG models for drawing.  I’ve always like the idea but I’d never tried using them.  Not until now.

I imported a CG mannequin and used it come up with a pose I’d like to use.  Once I found a pose I moved the camera to where I wanted it and drew over it.

How helpful was it?  What was the result?  How much of what CG model did I use?  Did I modify my drawing away from the CG model?

Watch the video and see…

And just as I did with part 01, there’s you can watch the real time video for a more in depth look at the drawing process by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/patron-only-real-20378365

Drawing Lara Croft: From Digital To Drawn On Paper: Part 01

July 26, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEO – Drawing Lara Croft: From Digital To Drawn On Paper: Part 01

So far I’ve shown how I draw the digital part of the postcards I make but I’ve yet to show how I do the final paper version.

I’ve decided to show the whole process from digital to final hand drawn paper.

These video are sped up.  Originally the videos I will show were recorded over a number of days.  In real time, they clock in at two hours each.

I’ve reduced them to about ten minutes each.  I comment over each video so you can understand the process.

This is the first video and in it you will see me struggle to come up with a drawing, and even after I finally find a drawing I think I like, I’ll eventually start it over in the next video.

The reason I’m posting this video is to show that the process is not easy. No matter how experience you get, it still tough.

The real time video is going to be available to my patrons only.

Here’s the link to that version:

Cornerbooth #19 Interview with Bill Deli

July 19, 2018 in PODCASTS, VIDEOS

PODCAST/VIDEO – Cornerbooth #19 Interview with Bill Deli

If you only listen to one Corner Booth episode ever, this the one to listen to.

We had a “live studio audience” in this one and they participated.  Asking EMMY AWARD WINNING art director Bill Deli questions and getting some amazing answers.

Also, I had asked my Facebook drawing group if they had any questions they wanted Bill to answer and I ask him during the show.

This episode is chalk full of information that will blow your mind.  Not only that, but it’s extremely funny.  We had a great time recording this.

This is the last of the unreleased Corner Booth episode.  Let me know what you think.  Should we make more?
