Drawing Powergirl Part 2: Rough Preliminary Pass

May 31, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEOS – Drawing Powergirl Part 2: Rough Preliminary Pass

I was off to a rocky start in the last video.  I didn’t quite like what I ended up with.  It’s time to try again, and that’s okay.

Drawing is a process, it doesn’t always go the way you want.  When it doesn’t you simply try again.

Fortunately, I got something I was happy with this time.

In this video I go over my rough drawing process.  How I approach a drawing and the kinds of things I’m thinking about as I rough it out.

I sped up this video, so what originally took me about 50 minutes, is now only 3 minutes long. To watch the full 50 realtime version of this video with commentary, join my patreon at any level: https://www.patreon.com/posts/drawing-part-2-19030254

Drawing Powergirl Part 1: False Start

May 24, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEO – Drawing Powergirl Part 1: False Start

When starting a drawing, you may not always make the best decisions.  Sometimes things don’t turn out and you have to toss the work and start over.

Here’s an example.  I sped up the twenty minutes it took me to draw this to three minutes so you can see the whole process.  My first pass at the drawing of Powergirl didn’t quite go the way I wanted.

I started over.

This video is an abridged version of the full video that only my Patreon patrons get to see. If you’d like to see the full video, click here:

Drawing Batgirl Part 8: Fixing What’s Not Working

May 17, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEO – Drawing Batgirl Part 8: Fixing What’s Not Working

Sometimes you need another pair of eyes to point out things in your drawings that you may need to address.  This is what happened to this drawing.

I showed the drawing to a friend of my at work, he then pointed out some thing that I should fix.  The decision was to either acknowledge the mistakes and move on or to go back in and fix the issues.

Obviously I chose the later.  Mostly because I thought it would be a good learning moment to make a video out of.

Well, it became much more than that.  As you watch the video, you’ll see me mess up.  You’ll see me struggle.  You’ll see me look for solutions, and fail to find them over and over until I finally get it all to work out.

This is a very honest look at the struggle that drawing can be, even for someone with a lot of years under his belt.

Drawing Batgirl Part 7: False Finish

May 3, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

VIDEO/ART – Drawing Batgirl Part 7: False Finish

How do you know when you’re done with a drawing?  For me, most of the time, it’s when I’m tired of working on the darn thing.

Also, sometimes I think I’m done when I don’t know what else to do with it.  In the case of this drawing, that’s where I was.

In this video I finish the drawing.  At least, I thought I’d finished but this is not the last video.  There’s one more video.  However, you’ll see in this video what it looks like to finally reach what I thought was the end.

Batgirl Drawing Part 6: Making Adjustments

April 26, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEOS – Batgirl Drawing Part 6: Making Adjustments

Sometimes, a drawing can take a while to get right.  Especially once you’re getting nearer to finishing.  You start to see all the little things you need to take care of that you missed the first time through.

In this video I start making adjustments.  Also, I finally get around to fixing the hair that’s been bothering me for so long.

Drawing Batgirl Part 5: Adding Light

April 19, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEO – Drawing Batgirl Part 5: Adding Light

Once you have a base foundation of color, it’s time to add some light.

Usually I do this in the tonal pass.  For this Batgirl drawing, I decided to do things a bit differently and added the light now.

In the last video, you same me mess things up.  This time around I get it right.

What does it take to make a final drawing look good?  A lot of work.

The sped up videos really don’t do the time justice.

Every Drawing Has a Story – Drawing Batgirl: Part 4

April 5, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEOS – Drawing Batgirl: Part 4

Once you have a tonal study of what you want your drawing to look like, how do you turn that into color?

There’s a lot of different ways to do this digitally.  It this video, I show you how I go about doing this.

Later in the video, I also show you how I totally mess things up when adding a layer of light.  It’s the only part of the video series that I intentionally speed up, simply because I don’t want to waste your time, but I think it’s important to point it out and show you why I wasn’t working.

Drawing Batgirl: Part 3

March 28, 2018 in ART, VIDEOS

ART/VIDEO -Every Drawing Has a Story.  Drawing Batgirl: Part 3

There are two ways of adding tone to a drawing or painting: going straight to color (in it various methods), or the “grisaille” method.  Most of us tend to want to learn the straight to color first.  However, it may be best to learn the grisaille method first.

What is the grisaille method?  Well, you first do a grey or grisaille version of the values you’re going to use and then you tint the paint with a color layer.  That way you’re colors have the values you want.

In this video you’ll see me do just that. I create a black and white version of the values I’m going to use, so that when I add color, the values are working.
