The last of the demon designs. Light work load this week. Paper Wings podcast #17 is awesome!

December 8, 2011 in ART, PODCASTS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Thankfully, I’ve had a light work load week this week.  Mostly working on a Couch Gag.  I’m sure the next episode I get put on will not be this way.

The holidays are coming up and that means we get some days off.  This SHOULD be a good thing, but it rarely ever is.  The reason being that, even though we get some days off, our deadlines stay the same.  This generally means that we have the same amount of work to do in less days AND with less people (since some people take more time off).

I really hope the next episode I work on, has the same level of re-writes as the episode I’m on right now.

PODCASTS

I’m gonna be telling you about the PAPER WINGS podcast today. I don’t think I’ve brought up this podcast before.

http://a2.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Podcasts/6e/e8/db/ps.ylxkuhzg.170x170-75.jpg

The PAPER WINGS podcast is a podcast hosted by Chris Oatley and Lora Innes.  The point of the podcast is to help you become a better artist and land your dream job in comics or animation.  It’s one of the best podcast around when it comes to this topic.  It’s a very positive and inspiring podcast, full of great information and advice.

Earlier this week I was catching up on some past episodes when I got to episode #17. It’s titled: Creator Interview with Comfort Love and Adam Withers, where in they do exactly that, interview the husband and wife team who write and draw the Harvey Award nominated comic, THE UNIQUES.  I have to say, it’s one of the BEST interviews about creating and making a living off of your own comic creations I’ve ever heard.  I listened to it in my car on my way home from work and my jaw was on the floor from all the fantastic information in this interview.

If you’re an aspiring artist and creator, this is a MUST listen.

ART

Finished designing the last demon for my project! That’s it, no more things to design (that I’m aware of). I can finally get to the ACTUAL production of my film.  Next week I’ll begin storyboarding my film.  I have yet to record myself, and to be honest, as things stand with my crumby computers, I don’t know how I’m going to do it.  I’ll figure something out though.

Okay, so here’s the design:

It’s not much to look at I’m afraid. The design needs to be a tad more work but it’s what I want.

Okay so this was one of the toughest designs I’ve had to do.  I kinda had something in mind but when I tried it, it fell apart on me. Since the theme of this demon was blades, I wanted to draw something that fit the theme visually. I began with the sketch up top on the right. I was thinking I wanted to have a creepy head where you can only see it’s ugly mouth and the rest of it would be blades, but what I drew was not what I wanted and it would have been a pain in the neck to draw all those blades all the time.  So I thought, maybe if it was armored, but then I realized it didn’t say “blades” to me, so I began experimenting with having the armor be sharp.  That’s why it has those sharp looking shoulder pads.  Thing is, I didn’t want to have to draw all those sharp things over and over. It would have made it too complicated to have made it look right.

I went to my reference folder that I keep, which has photos that I thought would inspire me.  It had some creepy looking gas masks and I thought maybe I would use that as a theme and maybe have tentacles or something coming out of it. This is what I started drawing on the top left of the page. I really didn’t like any of it though and I gave up.

The next day, I went online for inspiration.  I looked at photos and I was getting nothing, until I came across another gas mask but this one seemed hand made and all torn up. My original idea kept creeping back into my head, of having a head with only a creepy mouth showing. I combined the feel  of the gas mask from the photo with the mouth showing idea and stuck two blades in the eyes. I thought it was creepy. But then, it needed a body. I just started drawing, something gaunt and thin but when it came to the one hand, I thought I’d give it blade fingers, then the other, I thought I’d do something else and gave it a blade arm, as if he might have gotten it cut off and replaced it with the blade.  Finally, I thought I’d give it stitches, so it seemed as if it cut itself a lot, by accident.

That was it. I liked it. I might need to mess with it a little to streamline the design but It’s pretty much what I wanted.

So now that I’m FINALLY done with pre-production, it’s to time to get to the good part…

I got pushed by Simpsonized Mark Hamill. Ted Seko’s show and tell. Breaking down my story into Sequences.

January 6, 2011 in PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEOS, WRITING

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Wow, I had a nice vacation in spite of the fact that I spent Christmas in bed.  I SOOO didn’t want to come back to work, even though I have a great job.  I came back and it didn’t take long before I was under the gun. I was given Act 1 of show 17 to finish by the end of the week. It has the most changes out all the acts on the show.  Hurray for me.

In other news, I was asked by Director/writer Luke Gray a few questions earlier this week about the show. One of them being about drawing ourselves or family and friends in crowd scenes on the show.  In answering the question, I remembered that a friend of mine had drawn me in one of the shows because he thought it would be funny.  He drew me getting pushed down by Mark Hamill in the show he was a guest star in.  Here’s the clip where I show up. Look for me at 0:08 seconds.  I’m the long haired guy with the brown hair, in the black t-shirt:

Below is an excerpt of what I wrote the last two weeks, as set up for what I’m writing about THIS week, in case you’re interested in following along with more depth:

Right now, the theory of story that I like to use to flesh out my plot is the DRAMATICA theory.  Unfortunately the DRAMATICA theory is so complicated and convoluted, that I can’t really sum it up in a nut shell. If you want to get an idea of what DRAMATICA is all about, click the link below:

What is DRAMATICA?

In order for you to be able to understand it fully, you would need to download and read the FREE book on pdf. Click the link below:

Free DRAMATICA pdf book

or listen to the FREE audio book podcasts by clicking the link below:

Free DRAMATICA audio book

or read the FREE text of the book directly from  their site by clicking the link below:

The DRAMATICA book readable on the net for free.

As I did the last two weeks, I’ll put up the DRAMATICA Table of Story Elements in order for you to understand what I’m talking about and so you can follow along.   For a clearer pdf version of the chart (download chart now):

structure_chart.jpg

Alright, now that I’ve broken down the three Acts, the next step it so break those Acts into sequences. We do this by looking at our chart and seeing what quad has my theme in it, which is Truth. This would be the Memories quad. Inside that quad is Truth. I’m going to use that “variations” (in this light gray quad) to breakdown my Acts into sequences. I will do this by comparing all the pairs in the quads with each other. Doing so is suppose to get me a well rounded thematic argument. This is what I mean by “comparing the pairs to each other”. I’m going to compare:

  • Truth/Falsehood
  • Truth/Evidence
  • Truth/ Suspicion
  • Falsehood/Evidence
  • Falsehood/ Suspicion and
  • Suspicion/Evidence

How do I compare them? Well, from what I can understand from the DRAMATICA system, I’m going to ask these questions in order to compare these variations:

Truth/Falsehood

  • Which is better, Truth or Falsehood?

Truth/Evidence

  • When Truth is the issue, how do we rate Evidence based on those who espouse it?

Truth/ Suspicion

  • When Truth is the issue, how do we rate Suspicion based on those who espouse it?

Falsehood/Evidence

  • When Falsehood is the issue, how do we rate Evidence based on those who espouse it?

Falsehood/ Suspicion

  • When Falsehood is the issue, how do we rate Suspicion based on those who espouse it?

Suspicion/Evidence

  • Which carries the most weight when it comes to Truth?

Somewhere within the telling of my story, these questions have to be answered.  Since they are six questions and I have 3 Acts, I’ve decided to give each Act two of the questions to answer. This is how I broke it down:

Act 1

  • Falsehood/ Suspicion
  • Truth/ Suspicion

Act 2

  • Truth/Evidence
  • Falsehood/Evidence

Act 3

  • Truth/Falsehood
  • Suspicion/Evidence

So that’s going to be the themes running though the three acts of my story. The order is not written in stone so I’ve left myself an opening to change my mind as the process dictates. I’m thinking of keeping these in mind when I actually start writing, but I’m not going to answer the questions right now.   It seems better and more fun for me to answer the questions as part of the spontaneous writing process.

Now that I have that done, I have to decide if I want to break my story up even more. It’s a short story and I’m not sure if I can or SHOULD do so.  The next step according to DRAMATICA is to breakdown the sequences into scenes. Each Sequence is broken down into four scenes which would leaves me with 24 scenes. That’s 24 scenes I may not have room in my story for. Unfortunately, as of the time of this writing, I haven’t got the slightest clue as to how to breakdown the sequences into 24 scenes even if I WANTED to.

Can you help me out and read pages 138 and 139 in the DRAMATICA book? Maybe YOU can figure it out. I’m a bit stumped.

Heavy rewrites. Begining to finalize my test. Free board game video games. GATCHAMAN boards. Went on the IDIOT ENGINE this week.

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

The act I’ve been given for this week has some HEAVY rewrites.  I told my director I’d try to be done by the end of the week, but it’s pretty bad.  I’m not exactly sure I’ll be able to make it. We’ll see how it goes.

Wednesday night, I showed my director my rough fixes for my act. Usually it takes me about a day or two to rough them out.  It almost took me three for this one.  I spent about a three and a half hours going over the act with my director.  It was a very creative and exhausting experience.  By the time it was over, it seemed to me that I had more work to do than I did before we started. And that was AFTER I had worked three days on the roughs already. I think the act is better off for it.  I just wish I had more time.

…and now for something totally different…

Further down in this post I’ll be writing about GATCHAMAN. As I looked for pictures to use, I stumbled on these fantastic Simpsonized versions of the characters, courtesy of the FELIX IP blog.  Go over to his site and give this artist/art director some love.

Since I just wasn’t happy with what Rob’s design looked like (still), I tried doodling a version on the first piece of paper I had on hand.  It so happened to be the last page of revision notes I had for the show I was working on a week ago. The notes are cryptic if read out of the context of the episode.

I liked the doodles and I used them as a model sheet:

quick-doodle.jpg

I changed the model of  Rob’s face from last week.  I also added the raven on Rob’s shoulder:

4thpass01.jpg

4thpass02.jpg

4thpass-04.jpg

I then began to clean up the drawings, and as usual, have lost something of the “life” from the roughs.

clean01.jpg

clean02.jpg

If you notice, the background is blue in some of the drawings.  Why? Because that will be the color of the sky BEFORE the bad guys show up.

I’m going to give myself permission to mess around with these drawings a bit more. Especially the raven’s wings in the first shot.  Still, they are just about ready to be colored.

Before I even began to do a clean up line, I experimented with timing out the scene, just to make sure it would work.  I even thought of roughing out some “anticipation poses” and an “overshoot” pose but I’m not sure it’s what I want.  It may plays just as clear without them.  So far, it looks like it’s going to look good.  Once I’m done cleaning up the last pose, I’ll begin coloring.  Doing that will give me a guide as to how long it will REALLY take to finish my “Illustrated Film”. At that point I’ll make the decision whether or not to render out all the drawings or not.

BOARD GAMES/VIDEO GAMES

If you’ve read my blog for while, you know I love playing board games. The problem is that I don’t have anyone around to play them with.  Once in a blue moon I might get a game in, but it doesn’t happen very often and my games just sit there collecting dust.  Occasionally I play with my kids but they’re 4 and 2 1/2 years old. It’s not quite the same thing.

Sometimes, the only alternative is to play a video game version of a board game. The thing is, most of my favorite games don’t HAVE video game versions…or so I thought.  Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon this “Geeklist” at Boardgame Geek:

Sebastian Sohn’s SoftBoard Games: Free, Commercial, and Abandoned Computer Version of Board, Card and Role-Playing Games with Computer AI (Artificial Intelligence) Opponents with Screen Shots

and found links to video game versions of my favorite games!

For example, DOMINION.

Though DOMINION is not exactly one of my favorite games, it IS a game that I own that I haven’t gotten to the table almost at all and I’ve been dying to play it.  This gives me a happy alternative. To download this game, CLICK HERE.

Then there’s a the homemade unofficial MAGIC: THE GATHERING video game.  MAGIC is one of my favorite games (CLICK HERE for my review), so it’s nice to be able to play it whenever I’d like. This one turned out to be a pretty darn good  homemade game.

To download it, CLICK HERE

And last but not least. The game that got me the most excited.  One of my favorite games, (if not my all time favorite game) DREAMBLADE! (CLICK HERE for my review) So AWESOME! Now I can play DREAMBLADE whenever I want. Hurray!

http://home.comcast.net/~bsturk/dreamblade/db_gui.png

To download it, CLICK HERE

And if you’re a fan of DnD and don’t have anyone to play with, try this ROGUE like version of the 3.0 rules of the game:

INCURSION

http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic567300.jpg

Of course, none of these video games actually replaces playing the game against a human being around a table, but it at least makes you feel like you’re getting a little bit of board gaming done.

I recommend you look at the list to see if you can find a video game version of YOUR favorite board game.

Working overtime. A little bit on cheating perspective. 3 Animation Podcasts.

September 16, 2010 in ART, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Last Friday was very hectic.  I had to work overtime in order to get all the work I had done.  Turns out, my board revision partner was out sick for a few days and wasn’t going to get his assignment done.  I finished my assignment a day and a half early so I took on the last part of his.  Namely, all of act 4.  I didn’t realize I was going to have to do it all myself. I was hoping he would finish the first part of his assignment and we would be able share the workload but it didn’t turn out that way.  He was still sick and it was really messing him up.

In the end he managed to finish what he had and took about four shots off my hands but I still had the rest to do myself.  It was brutal but we managed to get the work done.

Meanwhile, starting this Monday, I got a new office mate. He’s one of the veteran board artists on the show whose been out working on other projects for a year or so.  He’s going to be here for a month and then he’s going back into the wild. It’s fun to actually have someone  to talk to on occasion.

ART

(For those of you coming in late to these posts, if you want to read what my project is about, CLICK HERE to learn about the general world the story takes place in, and CLICK HERE if you want to know the story itself.)

After all that time, I FINALLY finished the final lines on the drawing I was working on.  This was drawn with, black Prismacolor pencil on tracing paper. It’s great because if I messed up, I was able to erase the Prismacolor:

hotdog-line-art.jpg

If you compare the rough with the final, you will see that the “bad guys” are actually farther apart from Rob than in  the rough.  He definitely needed  more breathing room.  I finalized the background as well.  I didn’t really go out of my way to measure every little thing like,  placing the windows in the perfect places.  The things are a little off but I just didn’t think they were important enough to spend the time on.  The characters is where your eyes go anyway.  I also cheated the perspective in a big way.  If you pay very close attention to the bad guys on the right in the foreground, you will notice that the background lines are vertical to the way they’re standing, which is parallel to the picture frame.  YET, it’s a dutch angle, in other words the drawing is tilted. Shouldn’t the vertical lines be slightly angled like they are in the center part of the background? The answer, is yes but I cheated the characters in the foreground, so in order to make the background look right, I cheated it.  You probably wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t pointed it out.  Often with perspective in backgrounds, it’s more important for it to look right, than to make it accurate. That said, it helps immensely to learn to do it the “right way” before you begin to cheat.

The next step is to add tone.

What do you think?

PODCASTS

I’ve discovered a few animation podcasts this week.  It started with a Tweet from fellow artist Jose Gonzalez (a.k.a. Gonzalexx on Twitter). He pointed me to the:

  • Speaking of Animation podcast – A podcast that interviews some “mainstream” animation professionals working in the industry.  It’s very cool.

I then went to iTunes, in order to subscribe to the podcast and discovered MORE animation podcast.  The ones I discovered though, have unfortunately, podfaded. Still, the interviews they have are very good and very informative to listen too. The podcasts are:

The Animation Podcast

  • The Animation Podcast – an interview podcast with MORE mainstream professional animator working in the industry.  Last podcasts came out in 2008. and…
  • Toon In! – an interview podcast that interviews less mainstream animators.  They work in the industry as well but not in the high profile stuff.  Some TV guys, and European animators. Some do indie stuff.  Things like that.  It’s really interesting to hear this stuff.  The anecdotes some of these guys tell, are awesome. This podcast also podfaded around 2008.

Toon In

I highly recommend these show for anyone interested in animation

Tough work week. Character design silhouettes. Rithmomachia

June 10, 2010 in ART, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Wow, talk about work overload.  I’m helping to revise show 3 for the next two weeks.  It got a MAJOR rewrite.  I didn’t get to work on it right away though. I was told to start boarding the Couch Gag for the show first. This turned out out to be a huge job. The gag was practically a short story and it’s long for a Couch Gag. It was asking for some really tough things which meant there were some very complicated problems to solve  Truly challenging.

After finishing my first rough pass, I was told I had to start revising Act 1.   Boy oh boy did it get overhauled.  It wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for the fact that early into the act there was a huge dream sequence that required a lot of fancy styled shots. This small section of the board would be as challenging as the Couch Gag and it was only one small part of all the fixes I need to do.

So I started the Act, and midway through I was told  I need to finish the Couch Gag boards as soon as possible.  I had to stop my work on Act 1, which I was already behind with, and had to restart the Couch Gag board.

It’s turning out to be one heck of a tough week.

ART

I continued to explore the characters this week, trying to find the right face and shape for the Duran Duran Sorcerer:

sb-06.jpg

I made up my mind fairly quickly (maybe too quickly) with the look I was going to go with for the Sorceress. Which used this picture as reference:

nuclear02.jpg

sb-07.jpg

I then decided to focus specifically on the silhouettes of the characters:

sb-08.jpg

The “final” silhouettes I placed at the top of the page below.  I put quotes on the word final because I’m still giving myself a little bit of leeway to adjust them if I need to, or get rid of them all together (I’m not 100% sure about the Sorceress yet, I might be rushing her). I’m the most happy with Rob’s silhouette.

I then decided to really start working out the details of the characters again.  I decided to start with the lead Sorcerer’s face, since I  felt I was close.  I accidentally hit upon a design for his face that I REALLY like. It’s not a solidly constructed drawing but it will do for now:

sb-09.jpg

FINALLY! Two down, two more to go. After that, I have to design the backgrounds and the monsters. Plus test the flat stylized look I’m going to want to use, which means, doing an animation test.

So far all this has been fun and frustrating all at the same time.  After so many bad designs, it feels good when you hit one you like.

PODCAST

So I decided to listen to Catholic Under the Hood this week.  It’s a great podcast if you’re interested in Catholic history. he explorers lots of different things historical but from the Catholic perspective.  The latest episode was right up my alley since it was about a board game.

Rithmomachia.

Here’s what Fr. Seraphim wrote about it the show:

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Rithmomachia was one of the most popular games played in the universities and theological schools and promoted by Roger Bacon and Thomas More. Today, it has fallen into obscurity.

The show was really informative. So much so that it made me want to write a story from the info it put forth.   The game itself also sounded fascinating. Don’t know how much fun it would be to play, but the idea of the game is really cool. Great fuel for stories.

In order to talk about the game so that the audience could understand the relevance of the game to the mind of a person in the middle ages, Fr. Seraphim  had to explain the way the people saw number back then.  I couldn’t help but think of the numbers from  LOST.

Highly recommend listening to the podcast. CLICK HERE to do so.

Finished with the last show I’m going to be doing Story Reel work on. I have now officially been moved to doing layout.  I was so rusty I didn’t really know where to start and how to do it. Fortunately I started remembering it all and things started moving faster as I went.  Now I just have to be able to get the scenes out on time.

ART

So before I had created my blog, but after I had done the Trip to Italy sketch diary, hired to draw some pages for a small The Krusty Book.  The best thing about one of the assignments I had gotten was that I was asked to draw a comic strip of Krusty the Clown only small called Li’l Krusty (ala. Peanuts or Little Lulu). I couldn’t believe it. I was going to get paid to draw Krusty cute. I jumped on the opportunity to draw Krusty in the cute style I like to use.  Which is the style I use on my blog and in my Italy trip journal.

I don’t have a copy of the finished pages, just the roughs.  So here are my rough pages of the strips I did. Oh, and I didn’t actually write the gags for these cartoons. I just drew them.

krusty-pages-01.jpgLot’s of tracing back drawings in these.

krusty-pages-02.jpg

Had fun drawing does big eyes.

krusty-pages-03.jpg

In the final pass, they had me round out the eyes more when Krusty was in profile and they had me take off the clown shoes.

krusty-pages-05.jpg

Chibi Sideshow Bobby was fun.

krusty-pages-04.jpg

krusty-pages-06.jpg

There came a point with the Sideshow Bobby strips, where the set up no longer needed new artwork so I just photo copied the first few panels and drew the punchline as new art.

krusty-pages-08.jpg

In the final art, they also had me shrink Krusty’s ears.

krusty-pages-07.jpg

As you can see below, the last panel on the strip above, was changed a bit to end with the monkey more centered:

I never received an actual copy of the book so I don’t even know how the comics turned out.  I DID look in Amazon and found that their preview of the book actually featured a strip.

VIDEOS

Growing up, in order to get my brother and I from spending all our time in front of the TV, my parents only allowed us one hour of TV a day. This meant that I had  to make the difficult decision of choosing a show to watch.  I wasn’t allowed to watch G.I. Joe because, even though my mom never watched it, she thought it was too violent.  So I watched another show, Robotech.  A show that appealed to me much more anyway and ironically, was far more violent than G.I. Joe ever was.

In G.I. Joe the Joes and Cobra used to shoot at each other with laser guns and never actually hit each other, EVER. In Robotech the protagonists where at war with an alien race and quite a few of them died horrible on screen deaths. One of the main characters even bled to death after a battle.  It was a very powerful very dramatic show. It influenced me quite a bit. As a kid, it actually forced me to deal with death and loss. It also showed by example, the difference between infatuation and sacrificial  romantic love. I grew up with and matured with Rick Hunter/Hikaru. It was one of the four Japanese shows I watched in my early years that ruined me to the watered down preachy cartoon shows of the 80s.  Shows I found annoying because I felt talked down to.

Hulu has recently released Super Dimension Fortress Macross (a.k.a. Robotech). Macross is the original version of Robotech as it was shown on Japanese TV.  The version on Hulu is a new dubbed version of the show. It’s great to see the show this way. The new dub is pretty good and actually makes it less cheesy than the original dub.

I highly recommend this show. Though I remember that the art quality starts getting worse as the show goes along. I’m not sure why.

MY WEB COMIC

I’ve started inking my comic finally.  I really screwed up page 4 the other day. I had to do a patch job on some panels and on a character.  I’ve also decided that I’m going to use computer fonts since my writing and sound effects came out looking really awful.I’m learning a lot and enjoying myself though.  I’ve learned that I’m NOT good at drawing with a brush. It’s much better to have a drawing better worked out before I start inking it.  Maybe someday I’ll be able to, but not yet.  I’ve also learned that I should be watching anything new on a monitor or on DVD while I work.  I get too distracted and I don’t pay enough attention to my inking and it all comes out looking lousy.

Once I’m done inking the pages I’ll scan them all in, re-letter them all and begin coloring it.

More overtime. Mary Marvel Versus Ms. Marvel. Jim Lujan’s Seven Smiles. Free Famous Artist Course Pdfs

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Worked overtime Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.  It was pretty brutal but it’s worth for me for the money.  I’m getting a lot done too.

I was made aware of this video earlier this week.  It freaked me out.  This is what the Simpsons studio looked like during it’s first season. I wasn’t there, obviously, I was still in high school (or was it middle school?) in any case, I recognize some people in this video and I was really tripping out.

ART

This drawing gave me lots of problems, but after drawing it ten times, I finally got something I liked.

So continuing with our Superhero Versus Superhero Challenge my friends and I have been doing at work (click on the numbers to see what I’m taking about: 1,2,3,4,5,6), I did this drawing:

mary-marvel-versus-ms-marvel.jpg

It’s Mary Marvel (DC comics) versus Ms. Marvel (Marvel Comics) playing Marbles. They’re fighting because they have very similar names and very similar powers.

I’m working on the next drawing already.

The drawing above gave me so much trouble that I learned a lot from it.  At first I started getting frustrated but then I remembered something that Chris Oatley wrote or said on his Twitter page or his podcast, that made me calm down. Something along the lines of, “The process is the reward”. This made me stop and  consider what the process was telling me. If I was having trouble, this meant I needed to study up on something which made me realize I was going to learn something.  Suddenly I was excited that I was having trouble because I couldn’t wait to discover what I would learn. Turns out the Chris was right, the process can BE the reward. If I had not succeeded in drawing something I was satisfied with, I would still have been rewarded for having tried.

November 26, 2009 in ART, MY WEEK, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

This week and last week I worked on next year’s Halloween special.  There is a board game story in it, but I won’t say anymore than that.  I stayed late working on the show since Thanksgiving was going to take away a few days of work from that show.

On Wednesday  I moved to the crew I’m going to be working for, for the next few weeks.  I enjoy working for these directors, so it seems like it’s going to be a fun show to work on.

ART

I continued working on my sister’s logo designs this week.  Here’s what I did and why:

Silhouette lotus position

I started by reworking the rough silhouette from last time so that the girl would be in a lotus position. My sister had given me some more ideas for items and I put them in the drawing.  I cleaned up the circle also, mainly because I wanted to see what it would look like. I got rid of the laptop frame and used it as one of the interior items.

Coloring the silhouette

I thought that it we time to start defining the exterior of the design.  my first approach was to do it with color. I took the colors I thought I would use and started defining the drawing better.  I got stuck though. I wasn’t really sure where I was going and what was what.  It was too confusing for me to work this way so I changed my mind and decided to use lines to define the details.

White lines for interior detail

I used white lines and decided to just draw inside the silhouette, using the same shapes I had already defined with the color pass. I added a temporary background because I found that I when the white line hit the “paper” it got lost.  I had chosen to draw a really squished  rectangular head for the girl.  This gave her a very big chunk of hair on top.  The reason was mostly to create contrast between the too parts (face and hair) which creates interest. Then I drew the face. The details of the figure where taken from what I saw my sister wear in some pictures on her her site.  The girl is suppose to represent my sister without being a direct caricature of her.

Refining the lines

I was happy with the rough white line pass but I couldn’t quite clean up the line without doing a slightly more defined rough of certain areas.  Such as, her legs and feet, as well as, her hands in prayer position.  The red line is the clean up line while the blue line is my rough, definition drawing.

First clean pass

Once I was done, I turned the red line black and got rid of all the roughs and silhouette.  I sent the drawing to my sister and she gave me some suggestions that I will add next.  I will also begin to color it and add detail to the items.  I hope to be done with this logo next week.

MY WEEK

I went to the CNT Animation Expo last Sunday. In order to not pay for parking, I parked at the Simpsons’ Studio (which was  two blocks away) and rode my skateboard to the Convention Center.  As I was doing so, I did the idiotic thing of trying to text my wife something as I rode my skateboard.  The following event occurred shortly after:

skateboard-bailout.jpg

The board’s front wheels got caught on an upturned chunk of sidewalk and I totally bailed.  My phone went flying out of my hands, the battery flew out,  my phone slid face down on the cement away from me as I lay face down on the side walk. Comedy gold. After I got myself up and unsuccessfully tried to recover my dignity, I put my phone back together and discovered, to my great relief, that it still worked.  I continued my ride feeling stupid.  As I approached the Convention Center, I stopped at a light and suddenly discovered that I was in pain in two places.  I checked those two place.  My elbow was very scratched up and looked bad, but wasn’t bleeding.  I then checked my knee. My pants where ripped and when I lifted up my pants leg I discovered it was bleeding.  That’s when  I thanked God that all I had gotten was a scratched knee.

First thing I did, when I got to the Convention Center was find a bathroom and cleaned the wound. I now have a nice scab to show as a souvenir.   Then I bought a ticket and went in to the Vendor’s Hall. It was small but full of great vendors and artists.  It was worth looking walking through.  Lots of great books there. The were also a ton of students and pros walking around with portfolios, looking for work and asking about the state of the industry from other pros. In the center of the Hall was a stage with where two artists did demos for all to see.  The artists were very accessible and were rotated every hour.  At the time I had walked in, J. Scott Campbell was on stage drawing and talking to a handful of people about his art and influences.

I quickly got bored after walking around the hall for an hour.  It was small and I had seen everything by then. If I had gone to a panel, I wouldn’t have been bored but I hadn’t bought a ticket that allowed me to go to any panels.  They were too expensive.  The real reason I was there was to talk to friends I hadn’t seen in a while as well as meet up with new artists a didn’t know.  This didn’t really happen.

I left the Convention Center and went to lunch.  On my way back from lunch, I told myself that if I couldn’t find anyone to talk to, I would just leave.

Walking back into the Vendor’s Hall, I instantly regretted having gone to lunch. On the stage in the Hall was none other that Marcelo Vignali. He had been talking and giving a demo there the whole time I had been at lunch.  He’s one of my favorite artists and one of the top Development Artist in the business. Since I’m interested in doing Development Art, I would have loved to have been there through out this whole demo.  As it was, I caught the last fifteen minutes.  There were  a ton of people around him asking him really good questions.  I just sat there and soaked it all in. Afterward, he got down off he stage and a small group of students, followed him out of the Hall where he sat down and drew for them.  I followed and gawked at Marcelo‘s skill, trying to soak up everything he did as he drew.  There is nothing like observing how a Master artist approaches drawing. I learn a ton, just watching.

One of the students was smart enough to have Marcelo, look at his a piece of work he had done, so that he could give him his take on it.  Marcelo did, and as he did so, explained his process. It was amazing.  I couldn’t believe it. He blew my mind.

marcelo-teaches.jpg

Later, when all the students where gone, I reintroduced myself to him. I reminded him I had had lunch with him, my friend Paul, and a few other people some years ago when he was still working at Sony. I talked with him about his process a bit more and about sketching for fun.  He gave  me some advice on how to include my kids when I sketched, so they could do it too.  It was great.

I left the Expo right after that. I felt the expo was time well spent.

ART

Last week I wrote about Jim Lujan‘s latest short film. Jim does what he dubs “Ghettomation“. It’s do it yourself (DIY) animation. He strives for clear storytelling without all the time consuming billions of drawings it takes to make a fully animated film. Many people in the animation industry might scoff at this idea because it’s not “well animated”.

I’m a trained animator. Once upon a time, I thought that if a movie was poorly animated, it wasn’t worth my while. This opinion has changed a lot since then, I’ve come to the conclusion that “well animated” films, are not necessarily good films. I think it’s far more important to have an animated “good story, well told”  even if the animation isn’t the best.

Ghettomation is no exception. There is a such thing as great Ghettomation.  Case in point, behold, what Jim Lujan calls “Pixar Ghettomation“:

Yoga Podcasts and YoGeek.Me Designs. Jim Lujan’s newest cartoon. Cartoonists helping one of their own.

November 19, 2009 in ART, BLOGS, FAMILY, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, WEBSITES

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

Worked overtime this Saturday. It wasn’t nice.  We got what we needed done with time to spare though. The show looks great.  I even got an hour to relax on Tuesday before I went home.  Yay!

FAMILY/ART/PODCAST/BLOG

So my sister has commissioned me to design her a logo for her Podcast (www.elsiesyogakula.com) and her business (http://yogeek.me).  She’s a Yoga instructor. She sent me a few example drawings of things that are in the general direction of what she wants, as well as some photos of herself in poses she though I could use. One example was a few very interesting cartoony silhouettes in yoga poses, and the other is of a cartoony Vishnu/Shiva like multi-armed woman with all kinds of devices and things in her hands (no I’m don’t worship these gods, nor does my sister).  My job is to come up with something that has the general idea of the things she sent me without actually copying those things.  Very tricky.

She asked me to do it in “my style”, but, to be honest, I’m not sure what that is.  The “chibi” style I usually do on this blog, and in my upcoming Black Terror Kid comic strip, is not necessarily what I consider “my style”.  It’s just what’s easiest for me to do. My “short hand” if you will.  Does that make it my style?

So I don’t even know if I’m going to use that style for these logos. Although, it might be the first place I start.

So…here I go. The following is the start of my process of figuring out what to do:

silhouette bug looking things

So I chose to start designing the logos using  silhouettes. It’s a technique I first saw used in a book called: The Skillful Huntsman. I chose this method because I figured, if the silhouette, by itself, reads well, adding detail would just be icing.  My first attempts above, where my attempt to use my “Chibi” style for the logo.  It wasn’t a good style to use though.  It was too squat and compressed.  In the end, the drawings just look like weird bugs. I quit using the style without refining the drawings.  It would have been a waste of time.

Yoga multi-armed tech silhoutte

My second attempt was to try a style that was a little like the “Chibi” style, only with more stretched out proportions.  This worked a little better. It was clearer.  Only it looks like the character is juggling.  Also, it was too much like my source material.  I didn’t want to directly copy my reference.

Yoga multi-armed tech silhoutte version 2

I chose a standing position to try to make the drawing something a little different than the reference.  The proportions of the figure are much more naturalistic but still very designed.  I think this is closer to the direction I should go. It’s a very clear design. Unfortunately, this doesn’t quite say “Yoga” to me.  I also need more tech and health silhouettes in the hands. I’m going to have to go over this with my sister. She might have an idea as to what direction to go.

Yoga Up Facing Dog

This last one is my first attempt at the podcast logo.  It’s based off the photo my sister sent me, which is the same as her site photo.  This was a happy accident.  It just looks like a big brush stroke.  I almost just want to keep it this way.  Still, I might play around with it a bit more. I’ll also try working off the other photo she sent me to see if I can’t do something similar with that.

That’s all I have so far. I’ll post more next time.

ART

Fellow CARTOONISTA, Jim Lujan, has posted up the second part of his John Henry Unicorn trilogy.  The story is basically about a manipulative cult leader that causes mayhem wherever he goes.  It’s a dark comedy Jim wrote, directed, animated, voice acted and wrote the music for.  Jim is a very funny and very nice guy.  His humor stems from taking the things that make odd people odd and exaggerating them. It’s very observational.  His art is very reminiscent of Mike Judge‘s art (creator of Beavis and Butt-head, and King of the Hill), only he drew this way before he ever saw any of Mike Judge‘s early films and Jim‘s drawings are a bit more stylized.

This lastest cartoon took him 2 months to do, off and on, during his free time. He assures me that it only took him this long because he was getting used to his new iMac.  He told me, the next one would be done faster.  This is just amazing to me.  He was able to do a cartoon, by himself, in the same amount of time it takes most artists to draw a comic book.

He makes me want to try it myself.

My favorite part is the wig bit.  That really cracked me up.  The ending was very odd and very silly.

WEBSITES

Tom Bancroft posted this on his Deviant Art News page.  I thought I’d share it here since it’s a good cause:

ART AUCTION on EBay. Former Disney animator and author Tom Bancroft along with Tony Bancroft (yes, he was also a Disney animator, my twin, and directed MULAN) and a friend (Chad Frye) are putting together a huge Ebay art auction for the Hodge family and their son, Matt. Tim Hodge (the dad) is a long time friend (my family has know their’s since our kids where babies!) and Tim is a former Disney storyboard artist and Big Ides Productions director. His son, Matt, a 17-year old senior in high school was in a terrible accident when his car was hit by a train a couple months ago. He is still in a coma because of the head trauma. Their family is in need of financial help. Thus, the art auction.

The plan is to have the auction hit Ebay in about a month (beginning of December). We have sent out notes to some of the biggest names in animation, comic books, comic strips, and illustration for donations. We are getting in great artwork every day! (I met with John Pomoroy yesterday, who contributed a signed animation drawing!)

Please go to our preview site at: [link] to see what has come in so far and keep going back for more and more artwork as it comes in and updates about the auction. I’m counting on all of you to spread the news about this site and auction! Tell all your friends, these will make GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENTS!

Some of the artists that have donated or have promised to are: J. Scott Campbell, Chris Sanders, John Pomeroy, Drew Struzen, Peter DeSeve, Stephen Silvers, Charles Schutz’s family, Patrick McDonnell, and so many more!

BLOG

I was just checking out Paolo Rivera’s blog.  His stuff is so COOL!  Man, the guy rocks.  He has a video of his process HERE.  Here’s a video interview with him:

Cartoonistas. Overtime. Black Terror Kid.

November 12, 2009 in ART, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

I’ve been working late hours this week.  Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I had twelve hour days.  Two days of overtime, and one day of making up hours because I’m going to be coming in to work late on Friday.  Today (Thursday) is the first day I have a regular eight hour day and I’m looking forward to it.  So far, the show I’m working on, looks like it’s on track. Still, I feel sooo tired.

ART

Last Friday, I was invited to my friend Raul‘s house.  He was having a “Sketch Party”.  The sketch party was described as a party where we would bring our favorite or current sketch book, show it off, as well as draw some. But this was not  just any sketch party, it was a Cartoonista sketch party.

What’s a Cartoonista? The Cartoonistas describe themselves like this:

We are a loose collective formed between friends to promote their arts and events in the San Gabriel Valley areas.

I was invited to come to the party because I was asked to join the group, sponsored by Raul.  I’m at a place in my life right now artistically, and socially, that I thought this would be exactly what I needed in order to develop as a person and as an artist.  My social skills are lacking terribly, so I figured, if I join a very social, self motivated, group of artists, not only would it be motivating, but through my art, I could learn to be more social.  Especially in an environment where we can all talk about things we have in common.

Well, the party was a blast.  Raul‘s wife Hortencia made the yummiest food.  She really went all out.  I also drank tons of her horchata. It was really yummy. Thing about being in the room with bunch of Cartoonistas is that the jokes don’t stop coming. It’s as if everyone has to come up with as many ways to make other people laugh as frequently as possible.  It was darn funny and fun being around these guys.

We had an “initiation ceremony”.  Raul suddenly ran upstairs to get “something”.  It’s funny because everyone got nervous that he was going to bring down something crazy for the “ceremony”.  When he came back down, we saw he held three books. A fancy Frank Miller hard cover book, an Essential Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 2 trade paperback which contained Ditko and Romita Sr. stories in them, and The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation. We were to pick  a book to be “sworn in” on. That was pretty funny (I chose the Spider-man comic).  But our swearing in was pretty darn silly too.  I was going to pick that moment to do a cartoon, but it turns out the whole thing was caught on video, so I’d just put that up instead:

It’s very overwhelming to be a Cartoonista. The amount of art these guys produce is ridiculous. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s the link of to all the Cartoonista‘s sites:

Thanks for inviting me to join in guys.

ART

I’m taking a break from the Disneyland story again.  To be honest, I was hoping to have gotten it done already.  I kinda want to do something else and it’s starting to feel like work.  I don’t want it to feel like work, I want to have fun doing it, so I’m hoping to get back to it after I take a short break.

Having joined the Cartoonistas, has really put a lot of pressure on me to want to, “earn my keep”.  To this end, I have resolved to, at the very least, finish a comic strip or two, and maybe actually get a small irregular webcomic up and going.

Before I had joined them, I had also resolved to draw, a minimum, of one (non work related) drawing a day. With one very important rule: I must have fun drawing it. For years, I have not been having any fun drawing outside of work.  For the first time in a long time, I drew something that I truly had fun doing when I was drawing  the Superhero Versus Superhero drawings, earlier this year (click on the numbers to see what I’m taking about: 1,2,3,4,5,6).

Now I go home and draw  something at home and it’s actually fun.  I will occasionally put up one of these sketchbook drawing on this site.  Like I’m doing today, but most of the time, if I’m happy with something I drew, I will put it up on my Deviant Art page.  I invite you to wander over there once in a while to see if I’ve put up something new.  Here’s my latest drawing:

Black Terror Kid

I’m in the process of teaching myself to paint again.   My current goal is to build a “development art” portfolio.  With the industry going to mostly digital, most of the drawing jobs are behind the scenes in the development process. In order for me to continue drawing for a living, I need to step up my skill set to be able to do  development art as well. To this end, I need to just produce as much art in that vain as I can.

Hi, Welcome!

This blog is your window into the daily life of a Simpsons artist. See what it's like work on a hit TV show!

I update this blog once a week, on Thursdays and (sometimes) Fridays. If you don't see anything new, just check back on one of those days.

My e-mail is: luis(at)luisescobarblog(dot)com

Both my books are now on Amazon. Pick up your own print copy today!
