Finished up the Storyboarding. A trip to the Zoo. Munchkin’s obsession. Dante scoots

September 25, 2008 in FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS
I finished doing storyboard revisions this week.  I’m glad I was able to do it.  It was fun. Now we have to get all the rest of the scenes done so the show can ship on time.  It has CGI element in it which may get in the way of that goal.  Lance is really worried about that.

This week I also got into a huge discussion about Catholicism with a co-worker.  It was interesting and I learned a few things about the Bible because of it.  He’s a “fallen away Catholic” who has a lot of gripes about the Church and has a few conspiracy theories about it. A day later, by the time we ended our discussion, we parted in really good terms, considering  how heated the discussion got (by heated, I don’t mean we got angry, I just mean it was very passionate).

FAMILY
We went to the Zoo this weekend.  It was a spontaneous thing.  We were out, for a thing that my wife’s job was holding at the location of her new school.  On the way back, we were going to stop off at a park.  The closest one was Griffith Park in Burbank.  The LA Zoo happens to be in the same area and Alesha decided she wanted to take the kids. So off we went to the Zoo.

It was really fun.  We had a great time.  Munchkin was in awe of all the animals.  It was great seeing her reaction to them all.  The boy spent the whole trip in his stroller.  He didn’t really know what was going on.  He spent the day staring and smiling at his mommy.  We didn’t stay at the Zoo for too long. I think we spent about three hours or so there.  We were really glad we went.

FAMILY

Munchkin watches Snow White
I had tried other Disney movies before this one.  The closest ones to really grab her attention have been Toy Story, The Incredibles and some parts of Cinderella.  Snow White, really has really gotten under her skin though.  I don’t know why exactly.  Maybe it’s the simplicity of the characters.  They are just archetypes and they’re easy to understand.  The interesting thing, is that when I first showed her the movie, the only thing she was truly interested in was the scary parts.  Especially the beginning with the evil queen and The Magic mirror and the part where Snow White runs into the scary forest after the her failed assassination attempt.  That was the only parts that Munchkin would really watch.  Little by little she started liking the rest of it.  Now she sings along with all the songs and dances around to all of them and asks to watch the movie anytime she can. When it ends, she want me to start it over again.  I also find it interesting that the part that intrigues her most about  The Incredibles, is the first fight that Mr. Incredible has with the robot on the island.  I guess there is something about the intensity of these scenes that really speaks to her at some level.

FAMILY
So Dante now scoots around.  He doesn’t quite crawl but he scoops around on his belly as he pushes with his feet.  The first time we saw him do it, we couldn’t stop laughing.  He looks so darn cute doing it.

Digital classes, Alesha’s birthday party, first day of day care

September 18, 2008 in FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS
Took some classes on the new program we’re going to be using when we go digital.  It’s not as complicated as I thought it would be.  It’s really quite easy.  Unfortunately, we are not using the program as it was intended so there are things in it that aren’t quite in line with what we need it to do. We have a lot of work around solutions for those problems.  It’s the cheapest program the company could afford to license.  As I’ve stated earlier, the production side of the show gets the least amount of the money the show earns.  Which basically means we don’t really get the programs or equipment that would be ideal for us to use.  It really kinda sux.

In other news, my director Lance told me he set up a blog site.  He’s putting he’s earliest non Simpsons related stuff on it and he’s working his way up to the side projects he does now.  I can’t wait until he starts putting pictures of his sculptures.  He does these really great cartoon sculptures and they are really fun to look at.

FAMILY
Alesha invited people over to celebrate her birthday this weekend. She had a great day that day, even though there were times when she was a little stressed out.  Meanwhile I was pretty stressed out almost through out the day.  It started off pretty nice, and then it just got really stressful for me.  Still, the party was fun, despite my stress and Munchkin had a fantastic time, playing, dancing and singing.  I hadn’t seen her so happy in a long time.  Perhaps that was the only thing that kept my stress from totally ruining the party for me

FAMILY
Started dropping the kids off at Day Care this week.  Woke up at my usual time (4:00am), got ready and then got the kids ready.  I would tell Munchkin that they were going to Day Care so she would learn the word and understand where we were going.  I’d try to get to the daycar place at 6:30am so we would leave around 5:30am.  The Day Care is in Altadena which is a convenient 20 minute drive from my work but a slightly less convenient 30 minute drive from home.  Traffic was a bit of a hassle.  Lucky for us, we can use the carpool lane, so that helps out a lot.  Still, most of the time we got there in an hour due to accidents on the way there.

Once we got there, that’s when it got difficult.  Mainly because it meant dropping them off and leaving them there.  Dante wasn’t much of a problem, he doesn’t understand what’s going on.  Munchkin though…OH BOY.  She was breaking my heart.  It’s tough to leave them. Sticking a hot poker in my eye would have hurt less.

First day of day care

Storyboard revisions, Rosary army baby, Daycare, Alesha’s Birthday Orphan Works

September 11, 2008 in Copyright Protections, MY WEEK, PODCASTS, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS
Storyboarding, Yay! Been revising the boards for the show all this week as well.  I’m having a blast and I’m very happy to be doing it.  Meanwhile, the studio is moving forward in a big way to get us to go digital.  I’m going to be having classes on the program we will be using  tomorrow, (Friday).  That way, by the time I get on the machine, I’ll at least know my way around it a bit.

The head of the Korean animation studio that does the second part of the work on the show, came by this week.  He had a list of things he wanted to see from us that would help them be more efficient and help ease the work load.  That way, we can get the shows done faster for less money.  It was very interesting.

Speaking of budget.  I’m pretty sure this show tends to make an awful lot of money and yet, we always seem to be penny pinching on our end.  We don’t always have the money we need in order to do what we need to do.  Why?  Well, some people who work on this show get paid extremely well.  So well, that it’s actually making the show more and more expensive to produce.  It’s only a matter of time before Fox decides the show is more of a loss than a gain and it’s not worth producing anymore.  We are trying real hard to do what we do on our end to make the show cheaper, to avoid that happening too soon.  Sux.

PODCASTS/WEBCAST
Just thought I’d congratulate Greg and Jennifer Willits from Rosary Army, once again.  Last week they sent out a Podcast/Webcast (RA show #240) which allowed us to ease drop on them discovering the sex of their baby.  It was very moving and exciting.  You ought to check it out it you haven’t yet.

Okay, I’m going to spoil it for you now, so my apologies if you haven’t heard it:

It’s a girl Rosary Army!

MY FAMILY
Lots of things are changing.  My wife is going back to work.  She’s  going to meetings all next week.  She’s going to be working full time.  This means that we are NOT going to be able to take care of the kids ourselves and we can’t leave the kids with friends of family.  So for the first time, we are going to leave them in day care everyday.  They’ve had experience with a Day Care environment before, but not every day for months.  Just an occasional one day a month kinda thing.

To be honest.  I’m not happy about it.  It’s expensive and we are not raising our kids ourselves during the time they are in Day Care.  On the other hand Munchkin needs to be more social and be around kids and it’s not like we are not around during the times they aren’t in Day Care.  The place we will be leaving them in will do many educational things with the kids, including take them to the library (which is something that we tend to do with our kids when we get the chance anyway).  It’s not all bad.  Still, I just don’t like doing it.  Especially with Dante being so young.  Who knows, maybe it will be good for him to be around all the kids.  I pray this will turn out well.

MY FAMILY

In much happier news…IT’S ALESHA’S BIRTHDAY TODAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY! YAY!

The Orphan works battle is still not over.  There is still a chance that it may come up again.  Last time it was a close call.  This is what’s going on now:

FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS‘ PARTNERSHIP

With Congress back in session this week, Orphan Works rumors are back too.
According to some sources, deals have been made to pass the bills quickly.
According to others, the bills have stalled for this session.
Here’s what we know, independent of conflicting sources:

SEPT 6 OpenCongress Lists “8 Controversial Bills That Congress Still May Pass”
In Congress Gossip, by Donny Shaw, the article notes that the Orphan Works Bills “have been called out by concerned citizens… but are in a good position to quickly become law” in the next several weeks. The author quotes artist Brad Holland and attorney Larry Lessig in opposition to the legislation, and ends with this quote from “an anonymous OpenCongress user”:

“Isn’t it funny how music is getting huge, sledgehammer like protection in HR 4279 and visual art is getting devalued and made worthless by this bill, HR 5889? Music must just be soo much more valuable. It’s all about the corporate interests. Artists need to band together for our own protection and fight this dangerous bill. I’m an art student, and while I will never stop making art I’m worried I’ll be unable to make a living at it. It’s never been easy to be an artist without this kind of stuff coming along and making it impossible for us.”

SEPT 10 Authors Groups Submit Opposition Papers to Small Business Administration
The Illustrators’ Partnership, Artists Rights Society and Advertising Photographers of America have submitted over 60 papers and articles to the Office of Advocacy of the US Small Business Administration. These written statements were filed on behalf of attorneys, illustrators, designers, fine artists, photographers, songwriters, musicians, writers, members of the art licensing community and other small business owners. All are opposed to the bill.

These papers are the written statements submitted in conjunction with the Orphan Works Roundtable, conducted by the SBA  August 8, 2008 at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. The package will be distributed to lawmakers in both houses of Congress.

The webcast of the SBA Roundtable is available here: http://videos.cmitnyc.com/asip.html

A PDF of the collected papers will be available soon from the Illustrators’ Partnership Orphan Works blog: http://ipaorphanworks.blogspot.com/

AUGUST 30 Copyright Expert Releases Analysis of Orphan Works Bills
Leading copyright expert Jane C. Ginsburg of the Columbia Law School has published a major Orphan Works piece, the first of a two part article:
Recent Developments in US Copyright Law: Part I – “Orphan” Works.

Professor Ginsburg’s scholarly paper raises several critical questions about the current legislation. Among various points, she notes that certain provisions appear to violate Article 10.1 of the Berne Convention, which prohibits prejudicial exceptions to an author’s exclusive right of copyright. She states that the preclusion of injunctive relief with respect to derivative works would appear to force authors to tolerate “even derivative uses they find offensive or that distort their works,” and she adds that this “has economic consequences as well,” depriving the author of the right “to grant exclusive derivative work rights to a third party.  The bill thus potentially devalues the derivative work right.”

“The US proposals,” she writes, “may run afoul of EU restrictions” for various reasons, and adds: “[t]here may also be Berne- compatibility problems regarding the inclusion of non-divulged [unpublished] works in the proposed orphan works regime…[T]he bills should exclude “orphan works” which have never been disclosed to the public, and whose authors are still living.”

“The ‘progress of knowledge’ to which US copyright aspires,” she writes, “is achieved not only by putting works into circulation, but also by fostering conditions conducive to creativity.”
The full paper can be accessed here: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1263361

SEPT 6 French Magazine Telerama Sounds Orphan Works Warning
Main basse sur les images “orphelines” by Olivier Pascal-Moussellard. In this article, initiated by artist Etienne Delessert, the popular French magazine notes that 60 organizations oppose the controversial US bill and warns that it threatens to harm international artists as well “if they don’t wake up.” In opposition to the bill, it quotes Brad Holland and Dr. Ted Feder, President of the Artists Rights Society, which represents the estates of Matisse, Picasso, Chagall and tens of thousands of others.  It also quotes Stefan Biberfeld, legal director of Corbis Europe, noting that stock agencies such as Getty and Corbis will benefit from passage of the legislation because it will allow them to market orphaned work without fear of being “intimidated” by copyright owners. The article is in French.

“LE FIL ARTS ET SCÈNES– Menace sur les droits d’auteur : une loi américaine veut rendre libre l’usage des photos, tableaux ou dessins dont on ne connaît pas l’auteur. A qui profite-t-elle ?”

“Simple question de bon sens, disent les uns. Hold-up légal, rétorquent les autres. Légal, car perpétré par les députés et sénateurs américains, téléguidés en coulisse par les géants d’Internet. L’objet du casse ? Les droits d’auteur des peintres, dessinateurs et photographes américains, mais peut-être aussi ceux de leurs collègues étrangers s’ils ne se réveillent pas.”

TRANSLATION: “Threat to artists’ copyrights: A U.S. law would free up the exploitation of photos, paintings, and illustrations whose creators cannot be located. Who profits?

Some maintain that “It’s a simple question of common sense”. Others retort that “It’s legal highway robbery.” Legal, because the law is being perpetrated by U.S. Congressmen and Senators remotely controlled by internet giants operating behind the scenes. The target of this break-in: the copyrights of American painters, photographers and illustrators, but perhaps also of their foreign colleagues if they don’t wake up in time.”

The Simpsons montage, Playing games, Meme

September 4, 2008 in BOARD GAMES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS
Saw the Simpsons montage that you guys helped out on this week. It was sooo darn funny. It’s really good. The writers, when they saw it, liked it so much, that they wanted more shots put in it. Lucky for us, we weren’t able to use all the suggestions we had, so we still have lots of shots left to put in. It’s going to be great. Even when you know it’s coming, when you see it, it’s just so funny. The way it’s put together is fantastic. I’m now working on storyboard revisions on the show and I have to add a few things to it that will make it even better. Everyone who helped should pat themselves on the back. It’s a great gag thanks to you guys.

BOARD GAMES
I play board games once in a while but I rarely write about doing so in this blog anymore. Mostly because it’s a bit difficult to write about it and make it seem exciting. It’s just something that happens and it’s fun when it does. Sometimes the playing of a game reinforces my opinion of a game (such as when a few weeks ago, we played another game of Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery. The game is just so great) and sometimes it makes me re-evaluate a game (such as two weekends ago when we played The Settlers of Catan. I’m actually thinking I want to buy an expansion for it, because I think the game needs a bit more “oomf”. It needs to be a little more complex for me. I still like the game though).

The Settlers of Catan (pictured below).

Well, I’m going to writing about playing games this week. The reason being that I’ve started finding people to play the games with me besides my wife (who has decided to play LESS games with me). I believe I’ll be able to get more gaming in when my kids grow a bit older. They tend to be the reason I don’t play so much because they really need my attention whenever they are awake. After they go to sleep, it’s tough to invite people over for a game.

My cousin, her husband, and her two daughters would be great to play with but at the moment they have a similar problem that we have. They also have a little boy exactly the same age as my daughter (he had a birthday this last weekend. Happy Birthday Eduardito!”) and it would be a bit of a burden to have them over and find him a place to sleep or if he stays awake, keep him entertained. If we go over to their house, we would have the same problem with our kids. Either way, it’s not fair to the kids. So until the kids are a bit older, it’s a bit tough with them (although, to be quite honest, I haven’t really talked to them about it. We might be able to work something out.)

It’s tough with my brother and his wife, not because they have kids (although my sister-in-law is now pregnant so it’s going to happen soon. Very exciting) but because they don’t often have weekends off. The days they tend to have off are Mondays and Tuesdays, so that kinda messes things up a bit. It’s tougher scheduling things with them.

Out of my wife’s two best friends, one of them really loves to come over to play games. The only problem is that she doesn’t have a car, she lives in L.A. and even though she has a baby daughter the same age as Dante (which isn’t a problem), when she comes over, she pretty much has to stay overnight and we have to drive her back and forth from her house to ours, so it’s a big pain.

So what are my options? Well, I have three. This year has been the year of discovering old friends. Friends that I haven’t talked to for over ten years have suddenly started coming out of the wood work. First, I ended up getting in contact with one of my best friends from high school, who lives in Las Vegas (he was actually over at my house Sunday night and we had a long talk with him and his wife). That doesn’t help me much but I’ve started playing some “play by web” board games with him. Then, one of his best friend and neighbor (when he still lived around here), Andy, (who I also know) contacted me a few months back, and we discovered he lives five miles away from me. We’ve been playing a game of Chess via e-mail for the last month. Not only that, but he came over last Saturday and we played some games (more on that later). After that, yet another friend (a close friend of Andy’s) that we used to play role-playing games and Magic the Gathering with, contacted me. Turns out he has a game night every Sunday and he invited me to come over. Which I am sooo doing as soon as a get a chance (but I think if I do, it may need to be by myself).

Magic the Gathering card (pictured above).

T&E game (pictured below)

https://i0.wp.com/farm1.static.flickr.com/161/414924145_a8f9ddbef9.jpg

Suddenly, a lot of gaming opportunities have presented themselves. When Andy came over Saturday, we played Tigris and Euphrates (T&E) and Dreamblade. We played T&E mostly so I could teach him to play it. That way, he and our mutual friend from Vegas, can play the game via the Board Game Geek website. After playing that game (which he won by one point) we played Dreamblade. Dreamblade is a cross between Magic the Gathering and Chess with a random dice conflict resolutions. Since Andy was a huge fan of Magic the Gathering, back when it first came out, and since he’s a big Chess player, after playing Dreamblade, he got completely hooked. Not only did he beat the living daylights out of me in the Dreamblade game but the next day, he went down to the local game store and bought over a hundred dollars of Dreamblade stuff so that he could have his own (crazy). Before he left, we talked about maybe having a game night once a month on a Saturday night. He’s not married but he has a girlfriend (who briefly showed up that Saturday, but had to leave) who he said would probably be willing to came play also. Even if she doesn’t, a game with just three of us or, if Alesha doesn’t play, two of us, would still be fine. The best part is, that against Andy, I really don’t need to hold back when I play aggressive games, especially because he’s just as aggressive a player as I am.

The image “https://i0.wp.com/www.irook.com/gamekastle/photos/gkphoto_162.jpg?resize=590%2C442” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

andy-and-dreamblade.jpg

I hope that I can get at least a game night going once a month. That would be great.

It feels good to have those friends back in my life. It’s been too long.

MEME

So Maria tagged me for this Meme thing because…she was curious…okay, I’ll play. This is what the Meme requires of me:

1. Link the person(s) who tagged you.
2. Mention the rules on your blog.
3. Tell about 6 unspectacular quirks of yours.
4. Tag 6 fellow bloggers by linking them.
5. Leave a comment on each of the tagged blogger’s blogs letting them know they’ve been tagged.

Okay, here are my unspectacular quirks:

  1. I tend to go everywhere with bulging pockets full of nick nacks.
  2. I have a huge fat wallet and 99% of the time, there isn’t any money in it. What it’s in it? I have no idea.
  3. My car is often littered with papers. Mostly supermarket receipts I haven’t thrown out yet.
  4. It’s difficult for me to call people on the phone.
  5. I’m often seen staring blankly at nothing because I daydream waaaaay too much.
  6. I sometimes wear pants with holes in the knees.

Okay so now for the people I  tagged:

The Simpsons and Carmelites

August 28, 2008 in THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS
So we managed to finish the show on time. I worked a bit of overtime. I managed to finish my scenes and was able to help out other people to complete their scenes. Around the time I was ready to go, I asked my director if there was any more work or if there was anything I could do to help before I left. There was only three scenes left out with the artists that hadn’t been turned in yet at the time but he told me to ask everyone who was working on one if they needed help. I kinda wanted to go home but I did it anyway. First person I asked, pretty much gave me a brand new scene to start on. I’d been at work for a little over eight hours at this point so it was bit annoying. Not because I had more work to do, but because I was not mentally ready to start a new scene at that moment. I took it and managed to finish it the same day anyway. It took me about three hours to do. It wasn’t horrible, just a bit annoying. At least I’ll get overtime pay for it.

Now I’m helping out on another show. I’ve found it a bit funny that this particular show has Carmelite nuns as a big plot element. It’s particularly appropriate for me, considering what I did this weekend which I talk about below.

CATHOLICISM

The Carmilite order was founded in the 12th Century by men, who had gone to Palestine from Europe either as pilgrims or as crusaders. Inspired, in part, by the Prophet Elijah they built a community of hermits on Mount Carmel near the spring called Elijah’s fountain. It didn’t take long before other pilgrim traveling in the Holy Land discovered them and joined them. Between 1206 and 1214 they received a rule from the patriarch and Papal legate Albert of Jerusalem and have been living out this Rule of Life ever since. After the Latin world lost control of Jerusalem the Carmelites where force to leave and they began to spread out through out the world. The order is till around today. The most famous Carmelites are: St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and St. Therese of Lisieux. (My sources: Wikipedia, Order of Carmelites Website, Catholic Encyclopedia.)

Why am I talking about the Carmelites? Well, because this weekend, I found myself in a Carmelite run, male only, silent retreat. My dad and I went together and shared a room. It was the first time that I have ever been to a silent retreat as well as an all male one. It was amazing. Perhaps the most amazing thing of all, was how many men actually showed up to the retreat. About 70 of us.

The retreat took place at a retreat house run by Carmelite nuns. The most impressive thing about these Carmelites (besides how many they were and how happy they were) was that they still wore, more or less, the traditional habits of their order, and they were proud to wear them. I personally appreciated that very much. It was a constant physical reminder, whenever you saw them, that they had devoted themselves to something greater than themselves AND that you where somewhere Catholic. It’s not very often that you see nuns ware the older style habits. It’s very cool.

The nuns hadn’t expected so many guys to show up. In fact, they weren’t even sure if anyone would come at all. The nuns were very happy and overwhelmed by the fact that so many us did showed up . You should have heard us sing in the Chapel. We made the walls shake. It was impressive.

The retreat house was located in a small fortress of solitude in the middle of a suburban neighborhood, in the city of Alhambra, South of Pasadena. It was a beautiful garden filled place, full of trees, with small fountains spread through out the grounds and many small alcoves to hide away in. It was very well suited for the contemplative activities that we practiced through out the retreat. The retreat itself was very masculine centric. It was specifically geared to make us aware of of a few things:

  • Our masculinity
  • The attack on masculinity by our popular culture
  • What it means to be masculine according to the Church.
  • How to live out our masculinity practically in the everyday world.

If you’ve just finished reading what I wrote and frowned to yourself when I mentioned the word Masculine, then that only goes to prove that masculinity has been so attacked that it only connotes all that is bad in men. Our Retreat Master for the weekend was Rev. Brian Mullady, O.P.. (You may have seen some of his shows on EWTN). He went out of his way to let us know that, by masculinity, he did NOT mean, machismo. In fact, most of the talks we had during the retreat were about explaining to us, through the examples of St. Joseph and Jesus Christ, what true masculinity was and how it ought to be applied in our everyday life as well as our roles as fathers and husbands.

Overall the retreat was awesome. Since it was a silent retreat, this meant not only that we where suppose to be quite physically, but also mentally. We were suppose to clear our minds of all the everyday troubles and thoughts, not only to be more receptive to what was being said to us during the talks but also so we could hear what God had to tell outside of the talks.

It always surprises me how hungry I am for these kinds of experience once I’m in them. It’s like giving food to a starving child. I just can’t get enough. I couldn’t get enough from the wisdom being given to us in the talks, I couldn’t get enough praying and Mass time, I couldn’t get enough silence. I just wanted more and more. It was crazy. Even now, I all I can think about is finding a day to do it again sometime or to find time to do this on my own some how. I’m definitely thinking that next time, I’m going to a Monastery, to live as a monk for a weekend. I just need to find a monastery that will allow me to do that.

If you live in Los Angeles, California I highly recommend the Sacred Heart Retreat House.

Below are some doodles and drawings I made while I was on my retreat:

We had free time to ourselves for about two on hours on Saturday. They said we should do what we where moved to do so I chose to paint:

Painting at the Retreat

The finished water color painting looked somewhat like this (I say “somewhat” because the actual painting is actually brighter and more colorful than this scan. I don’t understand why the colors got dark when I turned the scan into a jpeg):

rose.jpg

We were handed a booklet with the itinerary of the retreat. It had a few pages in that back to write personal reflections, thoughts or notes. I drew in it.

Doctor Who drawing

August 21, 2008 in MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS
Okay, so, a rough cut of the clips of Homer getting hurt has already been edited together. My director Lance has been sick this last couple of days, so he hasn’t actually been to work and I’m not sure if we need anymore suggestions. I’ll update all the posts that ask for them when I find out.

Meanwhile, the clock is ticking on the show and I feel like I’m not going fast enough. I’ve just been given some scenes that I need to finish by Tuesday. They are very complicated, I hope I make it.

MY WEEK
My friend Aimee had a birthday the same day as my daughter. Last year I drew her a picture. This year I decided to draw her one also. A few weeks late, but it’s better late than never I suppose. After reading her Live Journal page, I realized she’s into Doctor Who, so I thought I’d draw her a picture of him. So I did:

doctor-who-birthday-line-drawing.jpg

After looking at it, I thought it would be nice to give him a digital paint job. I thought it would nice to have him in color all painted up and three dimensional looking. There was only one problem, I can’t paint. So I thought maybe I could fake it.

I took some Oil painting classes years ago. They started me off painting in only one color. That way I could, not only learn to control the paint, but also learn one of the most important things to know about painting, namely value. When you’re painting in black and white, all you’re concerned about is the separation of values so that your painting is clear and sticks out in all the right places.

At first, my paintings really stunk. The paint got all muddy on me and I had no control over it at all. My values where weak and it seemed that I never got them to separate right. In the class we where only allowed about four values. Mid-tone, lightest light, shadow, darkest dark. I got the hang of the separation after a while, though, sometimes, my dark values where too light or my mid-tones where too light, but I was slowly improving. Unfortunately, my brush strokes never really improved much. The thing is, I never got past the first few steps of the painting process they were teaching. I would set up the painting and place all the values in the right spots but I never learned what to do after that.

So here I am, years later, with this drawing I want to paint for a friend and I never learned to how to paint in color nor did I ever learn to get pasted the first steps in painting. So I thought to myself, maybe I can figure it out. So I thought, first, I should do a value pass. Paint it in black and white using Photoshop. So I started it and did what I could. I did the rough value pass using only two values (midtone and shadow), and then, I froze…I didn’t know what to do next. I just sat there and stared. I didn’t want the drawing to look like a colored animation drawing. I wanted it to look painted but I didn’t know what to do next.

doctor-who-birthday-midtone-and-shadow.jpg

After staring for a while, I decided to experiment and I started putting some reflective lights and some highlights.

doctor-who-birthday-reflective-shadow-and-highlights.jpg

I don’t think that was what I should have done. . On hindsight, now that I’m looking back on my decision, maybe I should have added the lightest light value to it, like we did in my painting class. Well, I didn’t, instead I looked at the mess I’d made and decided to add more superfluous detail by adding a core shadow to see what it looked like. While I was at it, I used the same value and darkened a lot of little spots in the drawing.

doctor-who-birthday-core-shadow.jpg

Man did I hate the way it looked. What happened to my drawing? I’d lost my way and it looked awful. I didn’t like it at all. I just sat there frustrated. I was thinking that maybe, I could add color on top of this black and white value pass, but I couldn’t see what good it would do. It wasn’t working. So then I started messing with the opacity bars on each of the layers I had put the values on, trying to find a setting that would at least allow me to see my original drawing under the mess I’d made.

doctor-who-birthday.jpg

It helped a little, but not much. In the end, I gave up. I’ll send her the line drawing and the last version of the tonal drawing and hope she likes it.

When I was at Comic Con this year, the booths that really made me stop and look where booths with paintings on them. I’m really interested in learning to paint this year. There are some painting DVDs out there that I want to get. There is a really expensive art school by the name of Gnomon that sells them. I’m thinking of buying a painting DVD from them, hoping that I can get a few tips from it. They’re really expensive. In order to make sure we don’t overspend, my wife and I have our own allowance for every month. I’ve already spend most of it tithing, paying for a retreat I’m going to this weekend, and small little emergency food purchases. If I have any money left over by the end of the month, I might pick a DVD up. I hope I get to, I need the help.

FAMILY

This Saturday Munchkin turned two years old. To celebrate, Alesha decided to hold a party at Chucky E. Cheese’s. If you’re not familiar with Chucky E. Cheese’s, it’s a pizza place/arcade where little kids (and big kids like myself) can spend “tokens” and play video games. There is a stage with animatronic Chucky E. Cheese characters who sing songs while videos play on monitors next to them. When we first got to the restaurant, Munchkin didn’t quite know what to make of it. She knew only one thing, the animatronic characters scared the heck out of her. I took her around the arcade while we waited for the her guests to arrive. I tried at first to get her to go on a coin operated horse, but when I put her in it, she got really sad. When it began to move after I put the money in, she started crying. Not exactly the reaction I was hoping for. I quickly took her out and had her lead me to where she wanted to go. Turns out, she wanted to get into one of the car video games. The ones you sit in with the steering wheel and pedals. At first she sat there turning the wheel but then I thought I’d put a coin in the machine. I put her on my lap played the game to see what she thought. I wasn’t sure if she liked it or not so afterward, I just let her sit there and turn the wheel again. It seemed she liked when the game moved because she motioned to me to put in another coin. We played the game a bit more and then wandered around the arcade. She began to slowly get more interested in all the coin operated “rides” when her guests finally began to arrived.

It wasn’t long before she was the center of attention and was taken from me. I didn’t mind too much since my cousin had shown up unexpectedly after he had told me he wouldn’t. We grabbed a handful of Tokens and off we went to play video games. The guests ate and went off to play games as well. Meanwhile Munchkin went around and played more video games with my parents. She finally got up enough courage to get on the coin op rides and began to have fun in them. Even my five month old son, Dante, got to go on some rides. Cutes thing ever.

dante-in-car.jpg

Then it was time to sing Happy Birthday, Chucky E. Cheese style. It was a big performance with restaurant’s hosts and the animatronic characters as they sang along with the video monitors. At the climax of the singing Chucky E. Cheese showed up, (that is, a person in a costume dressed up like Chucky E. Cheese showed up) to sing along and hand out medals to the birthday kids. Munchkin’s cousin Cristal ran away in fear from him while Munchkin didn’t quite seem to mind as much. At least, not until he came near, then she got all freaked out and started to cry.

Munckin meets Chuck E. Cheese

It seemed that, as long as he wasn’t too near, she was alright with the Chucky E. Cheese being around. The singing and the dancing, kept her distracted most of the time he was around, so it was okay. In any case, she had a great time. We cut the cake, and passed out the pieces. The cake was made by my mom. It was really good. It was a chocolate cake, I usually don’t like chocolate cake but this one was really good. As of the time of this writing, we still have cake left. There was so much left after the party. The cake was HUGE.

Afterwards my parents decided to ignore my protests and began torturing Munchkin by getting her close to Chucky E. Cheese to get her picture with him, with predictable results. I passed out some ice cream to everyone and had some myself, my cousin and I went off to play some more. We got interupted a few times for various reasons, like moving all our stuff to different tables and paying for the the party (which was expensive 🙁 ), but we played a lot of games. We even beat one of the games we played. Near the end, we ended up taking care of Munchkin again for a little while. She seemed to be very happy about being there at my party playing games. I asked my parents to get her something with some price tickets we had. I was personally trying to spend all the token we had so that I could feel like I got my money’s worth. Before we got the chance though, everyone began to leave. Including my cousin. My party was coming to an end and I hadn’t finished using all my tokens. I had to finish as soon as I could so I spent the last of the tokens playing a Pirates of the Caribbean Pinball game. Over all we all had a great time at my birthday party…uh…I mean my daughter’s birthday party (oh uh…have I been saying “my party” all this time?)

MORE FAMILY
In 1997 a family bought a Schnauzer that they discovered they couldn’t keep for whatever reason. That’s how 9th month old Louie XXV (a.k.a. Louie) came into our lives. My parents were asked if they wanted to adopt the Schnauzer and they said yes. Even though he and I had similar names, we chose not to change it. Soon after he joined our family, we wondered how we could have possibly lived without him. He accepted us as his new pack quickly enough and he was a blast to have around; he made our lives fun.

He was a very vigilant dog.

louie-mirror.jpg

Very protective of his territory. He more than once showed his skill as a mouser by finding and killing mice that had infested our house. He was a pain in the butt to walk. Practically choking himself on the leash because he pulled ahead as if trying to run every time he was taken out. Most everyone liked him and Louie was quick to accept other people, as long he realized that they were a friend of his Pack.

louie-spiderman.jpg

Louie was with us for many many years. He saw his Pack graduate from high school and was there when we moved from one house to another. He saw us find jobs, lose jobs, deal with broken hearts, find new loves, move out (which must have made his Pack seem to dwindle), get married and he was even there to see his Pack begin to grow with new baby Pack members. Unfortunately, Louie was not able to stay with us. Little by little he began to grow sicker. He grew a tumor on his belly and he perhaps had one in his brain as well. He began to grow blind and in his last days, he shown extreme signs of dementia from the tumor in his brain. Funny enough, no matter how sick he got, he was always on the prowl for food. Something he never stopped looking for no matter what.

Louie is no longer with us. His sickness won out and finally got him only a few weeks ago. My parents house seems so lonely now and I can’t help but miss him everytime I visit. I always expect him to come running down the stairs barking at me until he recognizes it’s just me, in which case he would then jump on me and begin yipping and whining with gladness. Because I miss him, I’ve decided to put up some pictures of Louie with some of his Pack:

Adventures at Comic Con 2008 Part 2. Good news for Rosary Army

August 7, 2008 in COMIC CON 2008, PODCASTS, RANDOM SKETCH, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

EDIT: (Okay, I’m keep the original post up but we are no longer accepting suggestions.  Thank you all who participated. Hopefully some of your suggestions will be used when the show airs.)
First I’d like to thanks Sara J. Monge for contributing a few more show suggestions. She sent me an e-mail. She asked me if we could use more. I e-mailed her back telling her we still could. I’m not sure if she got my return e-mail though. So just in case you didn’t, thank you. I’ve already summited the suggestions to production. So that everyone knows what shows she suggested, I will repeat them here, that way everyone know what has already been suggested and there are no repeats:

  • The Homer They Fall– Homer is a boxer. He gets hit over and over, but doesn’t fall down (4F03).
  • Two Bad Neighbors-Homer fights with Pres. Bush (Sr) and also falls at the end of the episode w/ Eisenhower
  • Homerpalooza-Homer gets hit with Cannon Balls and an inflatable pig (3F21)
  • Itchy & Scratchy & Marge– Maggie hits Homer with a hammer & the red paint runs into the drain parodying Psycho. (7F09)

Had a meeting yesterday about stepping up on our work load. It seems we’re falling behind. Personally I’ve been doing well just about every week so I don’t know what the problem is.

My Director Lance brought in a sculpture of Batman he made off of a drawing my friend Paul made years ago. It turned out really great. At some point they’re going to take pictures of it and put it on Paul’s blog. When they do, I’ll let you know so you can see it. It’s great. People were going in and out of his office all day looking at it. It’s always fun to be surrounded by so many creative and talented people. You never know when they’re going to surprise you with something like that.

COMIC CON 2008

Having rid myself of the Hulk (see last week’s post), I continued on my way around the Con. Past by a booth with an interesting sculpture under glass.

Feast 2 at Comic Con

Then as I went up and down more aisles, I came across two clone troopers oddly guarding a cardboard box that was labeled “George Lucas’ Good Ideas”.

Clone Troopers at Comic Con

When I was a kid, I always wondered why the Millennium Falcon toy wasn’t to scale with the action figures. Well, now I know.

Toy Millenium Falcon at Comic Con

For the second year in a row, the Dark Horse booth had a large partition with a life size line up of the characters in one of their Star Wars expanded universe comics, drawn by one of my favorite artists, Adam Hughes.

Adam Hughes Star Wars at Comic Con

legacy_centerfold_by_adamhughes.jpg
The Sideshow Collectibles booth is by far one of the best booths at the Con every year. You see all kinds of fantastic sculptures, props and things. It was amazing this year. They had life size Hellboy busts, and Ironman helmets and all kind of amazing things. There is just too much to see at the Con.

Ironman Bust at Comic Con

Sideshow Collectibles Ironman at Comic Con

After I was done going through the whole entire floor, aisle by aisle (which took me four hours). I decided to sit down for lunch. All the seats were taken in the designated eating areas and I couldn’t find an empty spot along the walls to sit down and eat because they were also being used. After looking for a while, I finally found an uncrowded place to sit and have my lunch at.

Castle Greyskull at Comic Con

After my lunch, I got a bit sleepy so I decided to take a nap. I had made a friend earlier in the day and he hooked me up with a place to sleep.

Jabba the Hut at Comic Con

After my short rest, I decided to go see some panels. After all, the panels are one of the best things about the Con. That’s where you get to find out the latest news about upcoming movies and favorite Sci Fi or Fantasy TV shows. When I inspected the Con’s program guide, I discovered, to my horror, that Thursday’s panels had none of those things scheduled. All the high profile, cool panels where happening the next day and on Saturday. I was crushed. I couldn’t believe it. I was going to miss out on all that cool panels. So that really stunk. I should make sure I come on a more panel friendly day next time.

Since there was no panels to go look at, I decided I was going to go see some Anime on the screening rooms. As I walked over to them, I checked the schedule to see what was playing. I didn’t recognize any of the shows so that didn’t help much. I was in the mood for something with Sci Fi action. I went in to a screening of something that sounded promising but it was something with characters talking about relationships and it was really dull so I left that room and went to another. The other room’s movie looked like it might at least have some action in it but the characters kept stopping the action sequences to have these long monologues about something completely incomprehensible, so it didn’t keep my attention. I started trying to come up with something to do. I decided in the end that, since I was at Comic Con, I might as well buy some comics.

I went back down to the dealer’s hall, and started off on my search for some cheap trade paperbacks. I figured, since there are many comic stores selling comics there, they must have discounted trade paperbacks to compete with each other for customers. Turned out, that was not the case. Not only where the comic stores at the Con few, but there was only ONE store with trade paperbacks that were being sold at a discount. You’d think Comic Con would have more comics. I was amazed at the lack of them.

One of the comics I was looking for was The Watchmen comic. It is being turned into a movie and I wanted to re-read it. Here’s the trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3orQKBxiEg

I read a friend’s copy when I was in high school and I enjoyed it, but the story was too smart for me at the time. I don’t think I truly understood it. Now that I’m older and have a point concrete world view, I’m curious to find out how I would react to it. Since I don’t own a copy, I thought I’d buy it there, since I saw so many of them earlier that day. Turned out, by the time I went to buy one, the whole Con had sold out of them for the day. I couldn’t find a copy anywhere.

In the end, after wandering around, feeling disappointed, I ended up buying House of M trade paper back written by Brian Micheal Bendis and The Settlers of Catan Card Game. The other trade paper backs I saw that I wanted, weren’t discounted enough and I figured, I could probably get a better deal on Amazon.

So I left the Con. It was 4:00pm.

On my way back to my car, I happened to pass by a large crowd taking pictures up a flight of stairs. I looked up and saw a large army of Ghostbusters getting their pictures taken.

Lots of Ghost Busters at Comic Con

When I got in my car, I was still disappointed about not getting the Watchmen comic, so I intended to stop off at the comic store by my house and get it there. An hour, forty minutes later, I got back to my town and drove to the comic store, only to find out, that they had run out of the comic also. Foiled again!

Not exactly the Comic con experience I was hoping for, but at least I got a few good pictures out of it.

PODCASTS

So my friends Greg and Jennifer Willits, from Rosary Army and That Catholic Show fame droped a huge bomb on all their fans on this weeks podcast: Show #238. I recommend you listen to it because it’s great the way the tell it. All I’ll say it that it involves Sirius Satelite Radio and 15 hours a week.

Congrats Guys! Sorry I didn’t draw you a picture but I found out too late in the week to meet my blog deadline.

RANDOM SKETCH

I was at work last week when I randomly started thinking about Munchkin. It made me smile and then I got this image in my head so I decided to put to paper:

Adventures at Comic Con Part 1. Spoilerific Batman: Dark Knight review with a Batman drawing. Close call with the Orphan Bill.

July 31, 2008 in COMIC BOOKS, COMIC CON 2008, Copyright Protections, MOVIES, THE SIMPSONS NEWS

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

EDIT: (Okay, I’m keep the original post up but we are no longer accepting suggestions.  Thank you all who participated. Hopefully some of your suggestions will be used when the show airs.)

Okay, so I guess this will be my last post reminding you about helping out the show. See the post: Calling all Simpsons fans, the show needs your help. Nethack and other Rogue type games for more details. This week, production began looking for the clips to put in the animatic. Luckily we had some suggestions from people inside the studio that we can work with (I made sure Josh Lama’s suggestion was in the pile they took with them). Once we are done with the first pencil test pass of the show, we’ll get to see how well the gag works . We won’t be done with that until sometime late next month.

homer-with-a-football-again.gif

Been working hard, getting my scenes done this week. I’m doing pretty well actually.
Usually, the week after Comic Con, (more on that below) everyone is talking about the Con and we all show each other our loot. Not so much this year. My friend Tommy did give me a copy of an artist’s sketchbook that he bought there and ended up not liking the drawings in it as much as he thought he would. I was happy because it so happens I almost bought that very book, but ended up changing my mind at the last minute. Cool.

COMIC CON 2008
Went to Comic Con last Thursday. Been looking forward to it for a while. I was hoping to have a very inspired day, like I did last year. I packed up a lunch, a bottle of water, took my back pack and I left my house at around 7:00am so I could be there around 8 or 9. I live about two hours away from San Diego. For the first time since I’ve been going, I took the 15 fwy south instead of the 5 fwy south. The biggest reason for this decision was because I live closer to the 15 fwy so it was more convenient. It was interesting. A little more scenic than I anticipated. Although I missed the hour and a half long view of the beach you get when you drive down on the 5 fwy (it’s purdy).

The Con doors opened at 9:30am. Got to San Diego around 9:00am. Parking, as usual, was a pain in the butt. Luckily, I was able to find the place I parked in last time easily enough. The fifteen dollars I payed to park there was like a punch in the gut though. Still, I was paying for the convenience of not going around for an hour looking for parking. I got out of the car and headed for the convention center. Didn’t take long before I was passing by stormtroopers and pirates, while trying to avoid the ninja turtles that where passing out fliers on the side walk. That’s when I realized that, once again, I had forgotten my camera. I’ve yet to remember to bring it. Lucky for me, my phone has a dissent camera so I took it out and prepared to take pictures. Unfortunately by the time I did so, I was stuck in the middle of an enormous mob of wall to wall people. It would have been great to have taken a picture of it but, since I was smack in the center, I couldn’t get a good shot of it without it looking like only a small handful of heads. The mob was there because it was attempting to cross the street to get to the Convention Center. After traffic cops herded us all across the street like a bunch of cattle, I finally made it to the Convention center.

Arriving at Comic Con 2008

As you can see. There were quite a few people already there and the Convention hadn’t officially opened yet. I managed to find the professional’s pre-registration area so I could get my badge to get in. Unlike last year, I actually remembered to pre-register. Last year it took me two hours in line to get my badge and I had to pay. This time, it took about five minutes and it was free. YAY!

After waiting ten minutes, it became 9:30, the Con was officially opened and we were let in.

entering-comic-con.jpg

Once again, as it always does, I got overwhelmed by the Con. I found myself just about right in the middle and I had to decide which direction I should go to start my trek down every aisle.

where-do-i-begin.jpg

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to take a good panoramic shot of the Con for the above picture because I wasn’t thinking of making a panoramic shot. I’ll just say that, if you want to know what the other side you don’t see looks like, it’s just as endless as the side you do see.

I picked a side and I was on my way. The side I started in made me feel as if I’d suddenly gone to the wrong Con. I thought I was at E3 instead. It was all video games there. Lots of video games that will be coming out soon. I didn’t stay long. Most of the video games I saw, didn’t interest me much. A few of the cinematic videos of the games where really nice thought. They really caught my eye. The Warhammer Fantasy MMO video, for example, looked awesome. Why don’t they make CG movies like that?

In any case, I walked up and down the aisles for an hour or so when I finally came up to the Stuart Ng booth (the one with all the European comics) where I got inspired last year. I looked around and was horribly disappointed that I found nothing at all that caught my eye. That’s never happened before, and I left the booth pretty sad.

Except for a Dalek that was set loose on the Con floor to exterminate all life…

Dalek at the Con Exterminating

…nothing caught my eye in any of the rest of the aisles either, until I got to the center of the Con. That’s where all the big flashy shinny booths are. Lots of fun stuff to see there.

First, I happened to discover that someone just happened to have dropped an Iron Monger suit. It was just sitting there and no one was claiming it so I thought I’d take it. Problem is that the thing was too big to carry and when I tried to get into it, I found it to be trickier then I thought. .

Disappointed I walked on. Then I saw that, once again, someone had accidentally dropped a James Bond car in the middle of the Con. So again, I thought, since no one was claiming it, I’d take it home, but there was no keys in the ignition, so my plans were crushed.

007-car.jpg

That’s when I heard the Hulk yell at me. He was angry because he said I was trying to “steal thing”. I told him it was “finders keeper” if someone dropped things and didn’t claim them. He got angry at me. You don’t want to see him when he’s angry.

So I had a few more adventures at the Con with some other superheroes and a few Star Wars characters, but I think I’ll save that for next week.

TO BE CONTINUED…

MOVIES

WARNING: The following review of the new Batman movie contains spoilers. I really couldn’t talk about this movie without doing so. It has too many interesting moral things in it that I wanted to talk about. So if you haven’t seen the movie and you don’t want it spoiled, please do not continue reading. You have been warned.

I saw the movie Batman the Dark Knight on Wednesday of last week. Overall I liked the movie. It felt like a modern Batman comic book instead of what people think Batman comic books are like. It was very smart and I liked the moral dilemmas presented to the characters through out the movie. One thing that all superhero movies should do is exactly that (have big moral dilemmas). Superhero stories are best when they are morality plays (like Westerns and Samurai movies). I don’t know why people making superhero movies don’t get that. The first Superman movie would have been much much better if they had left Lois Lane dead. Turning the world backwards in time was a total cop out. Same with the first Spiderman movie. Mary Jane or a bus full of kids? I’LL SAVE THEM BOTH, TA DA! Stupid, very very stupid and shallow too. When this Batman movie presented a similar dilemma, it did it right. I was happy with that. There has been a consistent depth to the latest two Batman movies that I’ve really enjoyed.

The Joker was finally done right. He was just like the comic book Joker. About time! Heath Ledger was great in the role. I don’t know how they could possibly cast another person to play the part. That’s going to be tricky. He was really great.

Great action in the movie, great cast. I liked Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent, he came across as very heroic. I hope that Two Face isn’t dead. He was very cool (in a bad guy way). Having the Joker “create” him was a very interesting take.

There is so much to like about the movie. It’s great. You can sit down and analyze the movie and get a lot out of it.

The Movie also brings up a very interesting point about Batman. Is Batman an effective hero? According to the movie, he is not. His use of fear and violence to solve problems doesn’t actually help the city, it merely causes more fear and violence. I will say this though, at least they finally made a Batman movie where Batman doesn’t kill the villain. That’s something I hated about the Tim Burton Batman movie. In that movie Batman murders the Joker, which of course makes him just as bad as the Joker. Not in this new movie. They get Batman right…well…almost.

batman-sketch.jpg

Having liked so much of it, I did have issues. Some of these issues where clarified after I talked about the movie with some friends of mine at work. I thought the movie felt long. A friend of mine thought this was because it was not written and edited cleanly enough. It wasn’t a lean movie. I’m not sure if I agree with him though. I would need to watch it again to make sure. I personally think that part of the reason it felt long was that it had a very unconventional structure. I don’t know how many Acts the story had but sometime midway through the movie, every time one ended and another Act began, it felt like the movie should have ended there. As a viewer, you never had the ability to anticipate the movie’s end and it made the movie feel really long. Again, I think repeat viewings of the movie might fix this problem.

Okay, now for my biggest problem with the movie. I propose to you that the movie was pretty much about the hope there is in all people to do the right thing. In spite of the fact that through out the movie, many people fell into the Jokers “morality traps” and chose to do an evil in order to produce a good (which is a BIG no no). In the climactic “morality trap” of the movie, the people of Gotham on the boats ended up doing the right thing. This showed the Joker that the people of Gotham are not animals but humans capable of making good moral choices. If that’s the case, why throw it all out the window in the last five minutes of the movie? What I mean to say is, why didn’t Batman and Commissioner Gordon have any faith in the people of Gotham when they found out the “truth” about Harvey Dent? Especially since only a few minutes before, the people of Gotham proved they could face dire circumstances with flying colors. It seemed really forced and unnecessary. Not only that, but the movie did a lousy job of making you feel that Harvey Dent was seen as a great hero by the people of Gotham. The characters kept, telling us he was, but never actually showed it (like they did with Batman and Gordon’s son). So not only did it feel forced to me, but then they added insult to injury by scandalizing Batman and Gordon by having them lie to the public. To me, story wise, it came across as if Batman and the Joker had exactly the same view of humanity. Are the people of Gotham so weak? They live in Gotham for goodness sakes! Out all the places to live, that city should produce the strongest of people.

Did the Joker win in the end? I would propose to you that the answer is, “yes” but not for the reasons the movie itself gives. I propose that the Joker would not have won if the heroes would have had faith in the people of Gotham to deal with the truth. Since the Joker managed to break the heroes’ faith in people completely, they chose to compromise their virtue and decided to deceive everyone. This is suppose to make Batman seem heroic and tragic. I propose that when the situation is looked at objectively, without the dramatic musical montage and voice over, it just makes Batman, look like he wants to be a martyr, just to be a martyr. “Oh look at me, I’m such a tragic hero.” This guy has major psychological issues. I didn’t buy it. It didn’t work for me.

Obviously, the reason they ended the movie that way, was just so that they had an established conflict for the start of the next movie. They could have come up with something more consistent to the story of the movie than that.

Okay, that’s my rant. Still, I trully loved the movie. I just left the theater very angry because of those last five minutes. I think I left the movie theater far more energized and excited after seeing Ironman, in spite of the fact that Ironman was nowhere near as smart and wore it’s themes on it’s sleeve. But then, the Batman movie was not meant to fill you with happiness and joy. It was meant to be a great morality play.

Yesterday the Orphan Bill was almost Hotlined. Luckily enough people called their Senator and put the Bill on Hold temporarily. I received the following e-mail explaining what happened:

FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS’ PARTNERSHIP
Senate Orphan Works Bill Put “on Hold”

We’ve just received word that the Senate bill has been put “on hold.” In fact, there appear to be multiple holds on it. Senators who “hold” hotlined bills do not have to identify themselves nor give their reasons for holding it. Holds are temporary. We don’t know how many of you contacted your Senators on such short notice this afternoon, but many, many thanks to all of you who responded so rapidly.

Most people are unaware of the process called hotlining. In the past it was used to pass non-controversial legislation, but increasingly, it’s being used to pass bills whose sponsors don’t want to see debate. An excellent article in Roll Call explains the process. Here’s an excerpt:

Senate conservatives are upset that the leaders of both parties in the chamber have in recent years increasingly used a practice known as “hotlining” bills – previously used to quickly move noncontroversial bills or simple procedural motions – to pass complex and often costly legislation, in some cases with little or no public debate. The increase was particularly noticeable just before the August recess, when leaders hotlined more than 150 bills, totaling millions of dollars in new spending, in a period of less than a week.

The practice has led to complaints from Members and watchdog groups alike that lawmakers are essentially signing off on legislation neither they nor their staff have ever read…

In order for a bill to be hotlined, the Senate Majority Leader and Minority Leader must agree to pass it by unanimous consent, without a roll-call vote. The two leaders then inform Members of this agreement using special hotlines installed in each office and give Members a specified amount of time to object – in some cases as little as 15 minutes. If no objection is registered, the bill is passed.

This is the second time the Senate Orphan Works bill has been hotlined this summer. The previous hotline came on June 5, the same week artists descended on Washington to urge lawmakers to oppose this controversial bill. The bill was put on hold that time too.

Since bills can be hotlined without prior notice, we’ll all have to stay vigilant throughout the rest of this legislative session. Thanks again to all of you who responded so quickly.

Over 60 organizations, representing more than 250,000 creators, are united in opposing these bills in their current form. Illustrators, photographers, fine artists, songwriters, musicians, and countless licensing firms all believe this bill will harm their small businesses.

Simpsons not going digital yet. Civilizations Revolutions DS. Leaving for Comic Con.

July 24, 2008 in MY WEEK, THE SIMPSONS NEWS, VIDEO GAMES

THE SIMPSONS NEWS

EDIT: (Okay, I’m keep the original post up but we are no longer accepting suggestions.  Thank you all who participated. Hopefully some of your suggestions will be used when the show airs.)

Well, we haven’t really gotten much of a response from the whole helping us out thing from my last post. Although Josh Lama sent us a really good one. Thanks Josh! We’re still accepting help. Also, I added a link to a Simpsons Show Archive, in that post, so that it’s easier to find the Show numbers and Titles.

homer-and-football.gif

In other news, we found out Monday of last week that the show is not going digital yet. It seems the budget for that never got approved so we’re going to need to wait until it does. The process is going to be much slower than everyone thought. We’ve been doing the show the “traditional way” for so long, that changing the entire way we do things, is going to take a lot of effort and growing pains. Thing is, if we go digital, the Korean studio we work with, will also need to do so, which means that we’re going to need to convert two animation studios to a new way of doing things, not just one.

That being said, there are some interesting changes to the show. First, we are now working in a wide screen format. We are using the paper we used in the movie, and though we are not using the same fielding we did in the movie, we are using much wider framing. Second, the show is now four acts long instead of three. The shows are not longer or shorter, this just means that the commercial breaks will break up an episode into four parts instead of three. I think, for us so far, it’s the trickiest thing to rap our heads around.

This week we got to see a crew screening of the colored version of show 17 (which was the last show we worked on before hiatus). It turned out nice. We all had a good time watching it. I’m very happy with it. I’m not sure when it’s airing.

Little by little, I’m getting used to being back at work again. It’s nice to be joking around with friends and generally making fun of things and each other. I still miss being with my kids though.

VIDEO GAMES

So my favorite video game was slightly modified and came out for the Gameboy DS.

I finally managed to find and buy a copy of Civilizations Revolutions (CivRev) last week. I guess the game was either, under ordered or, it was really popular because I couldn’t find a copy anywhere. I managed to get the last copy they had at the store I finally found it in. Like I’ve said in previous post on the this blog, Civilizations (Civ) is my favorite game. The fact that it’s now on the DS is amazing to me because of how involved a game of Civ is.

Once I got the game, I had to wait a while before I was able to sit down and play it because I never had the time. Two days or so after I got it, I had an afternoon free, so I played it. I beat it on Chieftain (the easy difficulty setting) in three hours. I then had enough time, a day later, to play the game on Warlord (the normal difficulty setting) and beat it in about four. Awesome! Not having played the other CivRevs (there is also one for the Xbox 360 and on PS3), I can’t compare the way it plays with them, but from what I’ve read, they play pretty much the same. Of course, the graphics on the DS game are more reminiscent of Civ II than the other versions (but since when has Civ been about the graphics?) It’s definitely a streamlined version of the game. So streamlined that it makes me think that it would translate into a board game pretty easily. I might use some of what this game does, to see if I can’t “fix” my Civ board game (the one I wrote about in a previous post).

Things I like:

  • How quick it plays. You can beat a game in a few hours, instead of a few days.
  • The different powers of the leaders you choose to play as. You can find the leader that suits your play style best.
  • How second nature the controls are. This is, by far, one of the most impressive things to me.
  • It feels like Civ. They could have easily messed this part up.
  • The fighting is pretty cool, considering. The little animation of the battles you get as really fun to watch.
  • The “Great people” are cool. If you’re culture is doing well, you produce “Great people” (like Einstein, Aristotle…etc.) who give your nation a benefit. It’s very neat.
  • St. Thomas Becket is one of the “Great people” your culture can produce. Anytime a Saint shows up in a game and has a positive role, is super cool.
  • Roads, farming and irrigation have been streamlined to upgrades and something you can buy real quick. As opposed to having to micromanage your Settlers to, irrigate, farm and build roads little by little.
  • I can now play Civ anywhere.
  • It plays a lot like a boardgame since it’s now far more streamlined.
  • You can play against other people online. Although, having played other games online, I’m not sure how fun it would be to have someone leave a game after playing you for a while, just because you’re winning; as has been my experience in other games.

Things I don’t like:

  • Spies are really weak. Almost useless. You can’t bribe other units with them. Best thing you can do is steal “Great people” away from your opponent’s cities. They should at least let you be able to view an opponent’s city info.
  • Settlers are only there to settle cities. So if you build extra settlers and find out there isn’t any more room to settle more cities, they just sit there doing nothing. They should at least have a secondary function.
  • Fighting a city is a crap shoot as to who you will be fighting when you attack it for the first time. Some units develop a special ability that helps you see into the city, but you can’t count on your units developing it.
  • Roads, farming and irrigation have been streamlined to upgrades and something you can buy real quick. I kinda miss the micromanaging of these things.
  • No world map option. It wouldn’t have been difficult to do either. It’s difficult to get a good idea of the map without it. You’re zoomed in all the time and can’t zoom out.

Still, I love the game. I highly recommend it if you have a DS, an Xbox360 or a PS3.

MY WEEK

I’m posting this right before I leave to go to Comic Con. Yes, it’s that time of the year again where all the geeks go and gather at the San Diego Convention Center and geek out. I worked late on Monday and Tuesday to make up the eight hours I’m going to be missing by going to the Con today. I’ll let you know how it goes for me next week.
